This video made me remember how happy my husband was when he found out we were pregnant for the first time. I just smiled so hard my face hurts a little.

Yeah, babies do seem to be one of those things that depends on the person - I’d probably be like this dad to be, but I can absolutely understand not wanting to deal with morning sickness, bloating, birth, nappies, kids making messes, and teenagers. The process does sound like a lot of work.
…though my mum doesn’t seem to have any complaints about the four of us, so it seems it can be worth it.

u/ba_cam 6h ago
It’s stressful at the time, for SURE. You forget the minor stresses eventually and what’s left is love and memory of a life that you gave the world. I don’t think of messy diapers any more, but wow do I remember the first time she held my finger and marveled at how tiny she was. I don’t care about the toys I’ve had to pick up, but I get to watch her be a best friend to someone that was lonely and see them both be better for it. I don’t think of the silly arguments we’ve had over his schoolwork, but I get to watch him fall in love with a girl that completes him. And so many more.

This is beautiful.
However, it's hitting pretty close to home, and we haven't had the luck these folks experienced... so, there's some envy at play.
Fuck it, right?! Here's to them!

u/Lifelong_Expat 10h ago
I have experienced this twice and then weeks later lost the baby. We are still trying, but another positive test won’t make us happy like this as you never know what will happen. Chemical pregnancies and miscarriages are more common than people think.
It’s sad, and probably stems from my trauma, but when I see videos like this, I feel more scared for them than happy. Don’t want anyone to experience pregnancy loss.
20
u/weirwoodheart 10h ago
Yeah I feel this way too. And I was lucky - literally first try we got pregnant. But I was never giddy and excited. Maybe it's my healthcare background, maybe it's my super pragmatic nature, but until they pulled baby boy out of me I didn't believe everything was okay. It's so, so early when you test like this, losses are so common.

I feel this. With me and my wife, We tried for a year or so (They were early 30's I was late 30's at the time so not the most ideal conditions) We lost several. We decided that We would stop trying and it just wasn't meant to be. About a month later, They come in and tell me they are pregnant. My actual response. "Great. Here we go again" theirs was about the same. We fortunately found a fertility clinic near by that was able to get them some progesterone and make sure we made it past those first few months. Then we found out he (the baby) had a defect and things were going to be dicey the whole pregnancy, And they were. 9.5 months of egg shells.
I am pleased to announce. After a pretty rocky birth and 2 surgeries. We have a happy and healthy now 2 year old son. Sometimes when you least expect it. It comes around. Usually after a metric butt load of heartache.

u/weirwoodheart 6h ago
Congratulations, Im so pleased your ending was a happy one. It's so hard- you want to be excited but there's such a risk at any moment itll end in heartbreak

u/pterencephalon 7h ago
I spent my whole pregnancy worried like that, especially since we had neighbors who lost their baby at the very end, shortly bed I got pregnant. When my son was born, I just started crying with relief that he was there.

u/weirwoodheart 6h ago
It's horribly vulnerable to just.. not know. It's a medical issue but it's so profoundly emotional it often gets forgotten for that

u/FirstPlayer 17h ago

Me and my wife tried for 6 years, 3 IVFs during this time. Our boy is 8 months old now. Sometimes it doesn’t happen, and it is ok, but I believe you got to keep trying.
Remember to be kind to each other, be understanding and try to make it fun. It can become difficult and akin to work sometimes, due to all that time spent trying, testing and worrying, but you can make this a good experience.
3
u/ElectronicMud9892 8h ago
I think I might try IVf. Been trying to conceive. Once or twice I felt pregnant. Then days later here comes the blood and huge blood clots 😭😭😭😭😭
1
u/_paag 2h ago
I recommend that if you go with ivf, then do the genetic testing on the embryos. Almost all of our embryos had multiple genetic flaws and were doomed to fail, except one. We tried this one, but it didn't take. If we tried those embryos we and then lose the baby a few weeks later we would have been crushed. The testing allows you to screen for viability and takes a load off your mind, even just a bit.
After trying for 3 years we had a first child, conceived naturally and he died just after being born. It was hell for us.
Then we tried IVF and still kept going at it the standard way.
In a very twist of fate thing, our son was made naturally, after all those rounds of ivf, ovulation testing, sperm fragmentation counting all those exams you take. My wife, after all those hormones being injected, got a little overweight and was feeling VERY self conscious, on the advice on the doctor we had accompanying us, we decided to try and lose some weight on the off chance that it might help. After 2 months of mounjaro, she got pregnant. We weren't even trying yet, it just happened when we fooled around on the right day, with no expectations.
I'm not telling you to do anything, especially regarding mounjaro, I'm just telling our story so you won't feel discouraged. Trying to conceive takes a heavy toll on people's mind and it is not often talked about.

It’s staged. “A while of trying” but he doesn’t know how long to wait or how to read the test? Yeah… no. Pretending to have fertility struggles to get internet points is trashy.

1
u/Careless-Ad-9073 5h ago
Not all pregnancy tests are the same: some take 2 minutes, some take 5-15 minutes. Some have the two little lines, some just say “pregnant”’or “non-pregnant”.
Trashiness isn’t limited to pretending to get internet points, btw.

I still find it weird to record and post these videos rather than being present in the moment with your partner
24
u/Crallise 8h ago
Being able to share that happiness and excitement with lots of people doesn't seem weird to me at all. I'm here thinking how wonderful it would be to have a video like that to look back on. They can show the kid in the future how wanted they were. It's a moment they can relive because it was recorded.

That’s true about the recording! I stand corrected. Maybe it’s the posting on social media that I’m too much of an old millennial for

When I showed my son’s father the positive pregnancy test he balked and said “I don’t believe that, take another one”.
I slammed the bathroom door in his face.

I don’t want kids, personally, and seeing this reaction in a lot of ways solidifies that I’m right/secure in that decision for me.
That being said…this is so beautiful and it gives me hope/more faith in humanity, and I may be crying a bit with happiness for them. 🥲🥲

I had wealthy friends who tried for years. Tried EVERYTHING. Even went to a specialist out of the country and never had any luck. Then they adopted a baby girl. Weeks later the wife was pregnant and had twins. At that point they werent even trying anymore due to the fact they were adopting.

I mean… I think that’s part of what makes this so happy, no? It seems like they’ve been trying for a while, and they got the outcome they’ve been trying for.
3
u/Goatmama1981 18h ago
I think you like being the mopey guy. Because that was a totally unnecessary thing for you to say. You could have just been unhappy and moved on instead of letting everyone know about it and bringing the mood down. But misery loves company, I guess?
5
u/internal_l0gging 18h ago
Right? Bet this person reminds everyone at a restaurant about the starving kids in Africa.
1
u/Goatmama1981 18h ago
That reminds me of a joke. A mama vulture and 2 baby vultures are sitting down for dinner. She says "now, you kids remember that there are starving children in Africa! ..... so save room."
3
u/internal_l0gging 17h ago
My moms favorite story of me as a kid: she used to use the 'starving poor kids guilt trip' on me whenever I would struggle to finish my plate. One time she was going on about how some kids were so hungry they'd eat from a trashcan if they had to. Apparently I got up and started putting my food into the trash. My mom started yelling asking what I was doing. I told her I wanted the kids to have a good meal if they went dumpster diving in our trash. 🤣
1
u/Goatmama1981 16h ago
Awwww! That's a cute story 😊 sounds like you were an empathetic kiddo. She couldn't really argue with that logic either lol

Another little human being. Oh well maybe this one won't grow up to be in the 50% of people who get cancer, the 30% who get dementia, the 50% who suffer heartbreak of divorce, one of the nearly 50,000 who kill themselves in USA every year, or one of the millions you see everyday stuck in a job they hate, struggling to pay the bills.
Hopefully they'll be in the tiny minority who die peacefully in their sleep rather spending a protracted time in suffering in hospital after a long struggle with debilitating illness..
So welcome to life and existential dread little one. You are in the unique position, amongst all animals to contemplate your own death and ask "why the fuck am I here"
