Discussion It seems clear to me that Metroid Ravenous is the end of a trilogy that started with Fusion back in 2002.
I've seen some people talk about Ravenous as the second game in the MercurySteam trilogy, but I believe that MercurySteam always wanted to follow on from Fusion to complete the story being told there(which is supported by the fact that they actually pitched a Metroid Fusion remake originally, and then their Metroid 2 remake heavily connected it back to Fusion).
1-3 is the "Hunter", "Orange Suit" or "Metroid" trilogy.
4-6 is the "Hunted" or "Blue Suit" or (possibly) "X Parasite" trilogy.
In the first trilogy, Samus is the hunter. Her mission is to seek out and destroy Metroids and Space Pirates. She has her classic orange suit throughout, and it ends with the eradication of all Metroids, and the destruction of Zebes, where it all began. It tells a complete story.
In the second trilogy, Samus is on the back foot thanks to the X parasite. Her suit is nearly destroyed, it is now blue, and it is regrowing over the course of the trilogy.
The Metroid DNA saves her life, and it starts to change her. She's also being hunted by the SA-X, then the Emmi/Raven Beak, and now the Space Ninjas/remaining Mawkin Chozo.
I think Ravenous will see Samus reach her full potential, fully restoring her suit, and I cannot waaaaait.

Idk. Personally I doubt theyre really doing trilogys. I reckon they just make metroid games as long as they sell well.

Nestroid till super is officially a trilogy. Super was supposed to be the end of the franchise.
Sakamoto only did Fusion because fans were excited from the initial prime spaceworld 2000 reveal. He specified that in several interviews that Super was supposed to be the end

u/NotSoAngrySun Sep 15 '26
But it does say 'See you next mission'' at the end of Super Metroid

Keeping doors open is better than shutting them off. How corny would it sound if the caption reads “bye, I go on vacation now, take care, byeeee xoxo”
24
u/henryuuk Sep 15 '26
That is a flawed biased way to look at/think about it
This isn't a "one or the other" situation
they could just as easily just have it ... not say anything of the sort in either direction.3
u/Bac2Zac Sep 15 '26
If you're under the impression that any organization at large, who sells digital intellectual property is going to encourage firmly closing off the opportunity for sequels EVER, then there's some other bias you're missing to land there.

Yeah, but if they did intend it to be the last game, they could have just not said anything one way or another. I always interpreted it that they did intend another game at some point

It says that because you were meant to replay the game. It comes right after your time and completion percentage are displayed
8
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
Metroid is a very replayable game, it even has rewards that could only be unlocked through more than one playthrough. I don't know how often I replayed especially the more recent games. Every playthrough is one Mission. See you next mission just means bye till you play this game again.

u/plumbbot3000 Sep 15 '26
Original intentions behind the scenes =/= "officially" to date. Stranger things was meant to be a one off with season 1 but that doesn't change current Canon. It OFFICIALLY has 5 seasons (unfortunately). Idk how you can call it a trilogy when fusion takes place like a year later and builds off the same story.
Anyways, you got some links for when this stuff was said?
2
u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26
Fusion takes place 8 years later.
Other M takes place weeks later, as both lt and Super happen in 20X7.
While Prime 4 takes place 2 years after Super in 20X9
The gap between Fusion and Super is canonically the biggest in the series. The entire Prime Series (with the exception of Prime 4) happens within a year of Zero Mission, as Samus returns trailers said. Also corroborated by Fedforce and Prime 4 stating that the events of prime 3 happened in 20X6.
Zero Missoon, the deepspace marina incident (that kicks off the series) and Prime 1 happen in 20X5.

u/plumbbot3000 Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26
The 8 year gap is in real-life lol that is not in game Canon and prime 4 was made by people who don't understand the story of metroid with multiple timeline breaking inconsistencies
2
u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Sep 16 '26
The 8 years werent only in real life but the japanese player guide (written by the developers) aswell as the fusion prima guide which is a direct translation of the japanese one.
As for why the Space pirates and metroids still exist post Super. Sylux bagged a Metroid from Fedforces secret (illegal) facility and secured himself a contingency pirate pocket like the Bermuda pirates a year prior to the pirates downfall and Metroids extinction in 20X6.
Then basically went silent to grow his army till 20X9 when he began attacking several Federation facilities out of the blue for tech.
The Federation (non corrupt members) and Samus really thought the Metroids and Pirates were gone. For two years straight. This got explained in the Metroid Prime 4 Prologue on Nintendo Today! Why the fuck this wasnt in the games intro or a scan log should rather be the big question.
The Prime Placement is something Tanabe discussed with Sakamoto regularly, as Sakamoto is the one who has the final word on primes lore. And Sakamoto was credited in Prime 4. So no, it very much got Sakamotos blessing.
5
u/Nayld_it Sep 15 '26
Prime and fusion came out the same year though
6
u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Sep 15 '26
They came out on the same day
however Prime was revealed for the gamecube reveal in Spaceworld 2000. that initial hype made sakamoto consider making Metroid 4.
Which then crystalized into Metroid IV, which graphical style was criticized to hell and back, thus R&D1 went back to the drawing board. And then in E3 2002 we got our first look at Metroid fusion with a november release
Said beta still looks very different with a lot of assets having never been used
4
u/Oboro-kun Sep 15 '26
Like is that usual Nintendo Method. The do the game and then later try to see how or even if it fits with the rest.
I am pretty sure we can all agree Dread is a bit different along with Ravenous because they are from Mercury Steam, and maybe they do have an intented storyline.
11
u/Dopsydope Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26
The first trilogy is a trilogy, you can’t deny that too much. As for the second I reckon a continuity among those games, and if you think that Metroid dread was (at the very least) a concept 20 years before dropping everything adds up
2
u/LavishLatte56 Sep 15 '26
Metroid games actually sell pretty poorly! Honestly I think Nintendo makes new Metroid games because they recognize how iconic it is.
13
u/Omnizoom Sep 15 '26
Pretty poorly but still very profitable
Outside of other M where they tried to reach a new audience in Japan and prime 4 which they fumbled the bag on hard, every Metroid game has probably doubled or tripled production cost in profits
And Nintendo is a rare exception in the game industry that they will see Zelda making over a billion in profit and Metroid making 100 million and go
https://giphy.com/gifs/hM9zK1qvsrwek
Like over protective Ip and everything aside they do have a strong passion and care for the games and the fans and want to keep as many series alive as they can
1
u/TimeManagement91 Sep 17 '26
Also Sakamoto already implied an arc just came to an end with Dread, the Metroid arc. I guess that arc isn't actually over yet though since we're now revisiting Samus's transformation as a central theme of the game.
All of the games have a continuous story revolving around Metroids and it isn't any 3 particular games.
1
u/B00H00F0RY0U 28d ago
he meant the story arc about the Chozo and metroids. He obviously didn't mean samus' story arc.

u/kukumarten03 Sep 15 '26
Why are people obsessed with trilogy?
16
u/NotASingleDad Sep 15 '26
Probably because they released a prime trilogy and that’s a main point of reference for them, myself included
2
u/nickman940 Sep 15 '26
Explain prime 4 then
2
u/NotASingleDad Sep 16 '26
The prime trilogy was released before prime 4. It was given the name “trilogy” and then they later decided to make another.
When counting you start with 1, then 2. After that it’s 3 and 4.
There were 2 years between the first 2 games and 3 years after the 2nd. The trilogy was released 2 years after number 3. Number 4 was released 16 years later. I’m not being condescending, I’m just trying to answer what your question is asking and literacy is always unappreciated
2
u/nickman940 Sep 16 '26
I apologize, I was being facetious. Should’ve /s
1
u/NotASingleDad Sep 16 '26
No need for apology. I’m sorry if I came off aggressive I’m currently working on that
22
u/Herbizarre17 Sep 15 '26
Media illiteracy. They don’t know stories come in other forms. Metroid has a clear 5 story arc through the first games. Not a trilogy. It doesn’t matter if Super was “meant to be” the ending because we know now that it isn’t the ending. It’s a 5 part story and a new 6th part is beginning a new story. No trilogies involved.
7
u/HikkingOutpit Sep 15 '26
Same foolios who genuinely think there's going to be a Sylux Trilogy ending in Metroid Prime 6.
When Prime 5 has already been confirmed to not even be in development.
4
u/SudsInfinite Sep 15 '26
Well, regardless of a Prime 6, we know that there are intentions to do a Prime 5 because Prime 4 ended on a cliffhanger. Whether or not they ever actually make Prime 5 is a different story, but there's absolutely zero way that the devs are not hoping to make it

u/SudsInfinite Sep 15 '26
May I ask you to please reread my original comment, because nowhere did I say that Prime 5 was definitely coming, and even explicitly stated that actually making Prime 5 was a different story. All I said was that Prime 5 was something that the devs want to do, not that they will do it or are working on it. I don't want to go all "Reading comprehension is dead" but you clearly did not actually read my comment
1
u/cornimgameplays Sep 15 '26
Confirmed by who? The baby?
0
u/HikkingOutpit Sep 15 '26
Confirmed by Kensuke Tanabe himself in his final interview in an official capacity as a Nintendo employee in January 2026 with Nintendo Dream magazine.
2
u/cornimgameplays Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 16 '26
No, it wasn't. Tanabe said he hopes his idea for Prime 5 gets made, not that Prime 5 is not coming out.
Five reasons for this:
Kensuke Tanabe is not involved with the Prime series anymore. He might not even know if a game is in development or not.
If he knows, he will not directly confirm whether Prime 5 is in development or not, for obvious reasons.
The interview was in Japanese, and there might be mistranslations.
As mentioned previously, Tanabe will no longer work on the Metroid franchise, so whoever takes charge of Prime 5's development has no obligation to replicate Tanabe's vision for the game.
The game might have started development after January 2026, which is only one month after Prime 4's release so it's not unlikely that this is the case.
Nothing is confirmed unless a Nintendo or Retro employee who works on the Metroid franchise publicly announces that Prime 5 is or is not in development, which hasn't happened yet.
1
u/Medical-Arachnid-414 Sep 16 '26
Prime 5 is never coming out unless someone makes a 3D Adventure Metroidvania that gets Nintendo to actually feel somewhat threatened.
5
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
You think that Ravenous is the beginning of a new story even though it follows on directly from the ending of Dread?
Just because an interview from 5 years ago said that was the case?
Fusion feels like more of a new beginning than Ravenous.
7
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
No, it can also just be a contiuation of the current story. Things don't need to be trilogies. A saga can go as long as you want without such groupings. It's a 5-game saga until Ravenous comes, at which point it'd be a 6-game sage. A Hexalogie (?) instead of a Pentalogie (?). I'd say the first Primes do form a Trilogy, but I feel like that's about all the groupings we have.
3
u/cellphone_blanket Sep 15 '26
Lord of the rings did and now we’re cursed with people trying to group every collection of media into sets of three
1
-3
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
Complete stories are normally in 3 acts I guess!
8
u/henryuuk Sep 15 '26
Not really
There are a small handful of franchises that happened to have gotten very popular in mainstream media and that were written as (or ended up as) trilogies, but for every one of those, there are just as many you could point to that aren't trilogies.
Like, for every Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, you can also just point to like ..."a Song of Ice and Fire" (currently 5 (main) books, supposed to end at 7) or "Harry Potter" (7 books) or "the Inheritance Cycle" (4 (main) books), (FAIU) Dune has 6 "main" books, How to train a dragon apparently has TWELVE main books, etc...There is also often the "rule of threes", especially in regards to comedy or story elements being reused, but that doesn't naturally extent to stories as a whole.
3
u/ASnakeNamedNate Sep 15 '26
Whoah this whole time I thought people were just waiting on GRR Martin to finish the last one. I didn’t know they were waiting on two books for this long. Wild lol
3
u/HikkingOutpit Sep 15 '26
Ya know what's even worse, he also said a few years ago book 7 may be too big and might have to be split in half. Yet book 6 may not even exist right now lol
1
u/henryuuk Sep 16 '26
Nope, in essence people have been waiting for "Harry Potter and the half blood prince" this entire time, AND THEN the wait for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" starts
tho If I heard/understand correctly, supposedly part of the reason why 6 is taking so long is cause he supposedly is drafting 7 at the same time to make them really work together well/wrap everything up nicely or something.
So if 6 eventually releases then 7 should be less of an insane wait ?but yeah, once i learned about the situation I pretty much forbid myself from actually starting to read the books until there is actual news of 6 and 7 actually coming out.
I have no desire to join the waiting horde for another series (especially not for one that might see its creator kick the bucket before it actually manages to finish)1
u/ASnakeNamedNate Sep 16 '26
lol my undiagnosed adhd having ass cannot read novels anymore so I am blissfully unaffected.
0
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
You are right, not every single story or franchise sticks to trilogies, or threes.
I do think I've made a decent case for how the 6 Metroid games could be split into 2 distinct groups of three though. Suit colour, Metroids being extinct, X Parasites being a thing, Samus being hunted by incredibly strong forces, her changing physiology, no more space pirates, having the same ship across these last 3 games, Adam's AI playing a role.
The list goes on!
2
u/hawkguy1987 Sep 15 '26
Agreed! And theres nothing saying that "trilogies" cant lead into/out of or be parts of larger overarching stories. Thats where things like "sagas" and "arcs" come in when discussing long form stories. Calling these splits the "Hunter Arc" amd "Hunted Arc" would be just as valid as "Metroid Trilogy" and "X Trilogy" based off commonalities.
1
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
Sure, it's all valid and it's all up for discussion, which is the point of a post like this!
2
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
What you explained does make sense, but the split, albeit well reasoned, seems arbitrary when it's not reallly necessary and doesn't really provide any added value to the saga. I could just as easily say that Fusion and Dread are in fact a pair revolving around X, and that Ravenous could be the start of a new Duo or Trilogy, but what's the added value of that? All games are prequels or sequels to each other, so of course they follow up on each others story, so what's the point of arbitrarily grouping them like that?
0
u/NamiRocket Sep 15 '26
Not really
Yes, really. But that applies more to the story in a single stage play, book, film, game, etc. than it does to three separate things. When we're applying that logic to a trilogy of something, it ends up being nine acts instead of three.
OP is just confused about what an act actually is in this case.
1
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
Well, no. Most tv shows have more than 3 seasons, albeit sometimes unfortunately. Many Game series have at most one sequel, and then make a new story. Other games build each on top of each other without being direct sequels, others are direct sequels that are distanced enough to work as standalones. A lot of book series or movie series have a different number to 3. A Trilogy is actually rather rare, though perhaps the most common numbered group in stories, but even there I have my doubts.
27
u/Idainaru_Yokubo Sep 15 '26

u/AllEchse Sep 15 '26
The game is not even out yet, we don't know how it ends yet.
I don't think we are guaranteed a clean break and may get even more hooks that plot threads could follow from, just like we got with Samus Returns and Dread.
I don't think we can just say it's gonna be a trilogy just because it' s a common concept.
Maybe the next game after will make it look more like Dread to that is a trilogy or Ravenous could look like the start of a whole new on in hindsight.
We dont know.

u/JustAnOrdinaryEevee Sep 15 '26
I mean, they kept asking Nintendo if they can remake Fusion, so yea, they absolutely work of off Fusion imo
Which is great, I fucking love Fusion

u/Rainslana Sep 15 '26
This is why I think they should remake fusion with dread mechanics and graphics
3

I think MS definitely deserves to make one after this run. That was the project they initially wanted to do after all.
2
u/maukenboost Sep 16 '26

9
u/Luke_Brewer Sep 15 '26
People taking the idea of "trilogies" too seriously, saying it isn't what was planned etc. But OP is obviously right, there are story arcs here even if they aren't official. First three is about dealing with Mother Brain and the space pirates, next three are around the consequences of Samus's infusion with metroid DNA and her transformation.
10
u/cesarbiods Sep 15 '26
Ah yes let’s infer the whole story of an unreleased game from a single trailer 😑
5
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
The suit restoration is just an educated guess based on the two new suits from the trailer, which are more restored versions of the Dread suit (which is itself a more restored fusion suit).
It's the logical progression with a little bit of hope mixed in.
10
u/cornimgameplays Sep 15 '26
Metroid Zero Mission through Super Metroid is the "Metroid Saga"
Metroid Fusion through Ravenous is the "X saga"
Metroid Prime 1-3 is the "Phazon Saga"
Metroid Prime 4+ is the "Sylux Saga", altough I really don't want Sylux to be the villain for three games, kill him in 5.
12
u/AllEchse Sep 15 '26
Do we even know if the X will appear in Ravenous?
8
u/H4llifax Sep 15 '26
I don't know where they would fit in, but I noticed when I rewatched the Dread trailer that they managed well to hide the X reveal.
5
u/Psylux7 Sep 15 '26
They actually did release some brief footage that showed samus killing basic enemies who then turned into x parasites sometime before dread released. Not sure why that happened, but it was posted on this sub back then, but surprisingly it kinda flew under the radar. Thankfully I ended up forgetting about that very short clip by the time I played Dread.
9
u/Electronic-Touch-554 Sep 15 '26
I dont think sylux really has the mileage for one more game.
His whole concept is that he was a federation soldier that samus either didnt save or samus's appearence caused his base to be massacred. Its a cool concept but I feel like it doesnt extend past 4.
9
u/Exciting-Position716 Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26
I mean, he's becoming a psychic God based on the ending of Prime 4. With some good writing they easily can salvage Sylux in a much better Prime 5. Sylux has massacred all of the fed soldiers that were companions to Samus throughout 4 and is probably going to continue to become more powerful and more prolific with his psychic abilities.
He already fought Samus throughout Prime 4 solely through projection until the final battle and the final battle was just him really getting to grips with his powers.
I do believe there is potential. Prime 5 (if we ever get it, I hope we do) just needs to be a stronger game and do more with Sylux to make him more of a threat. I do think the very last bit of having him kill all the fed soldiers sacrificing themselves for you was a good moment to build on Samus and Sylux hating each other.
It gives more room for Samus to be resentful towards Sylux and it makes him more evil. They need to lean into Sylux just straight up being psychopathic and murderous.
2
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
Projection? You mean the Mini-Bosses? Those are just Psy-Bots with a disguise on.
3
u/Exciting-Position716 Sep 15 '26
It's heavily implied he is psychically projecting himself onto the psy-bots and controlling them to combat Samus as his power grows.
2
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
Heavily implied in what way?
1
u/Exciting-Position716 Sep 15 '26
It's literally depicted in the game itself. The Psychic Healing Pod he is in, in the Chrono Tower links him directly to the telepathic network of the Lamorn and allowed him to take control of all of their autonomous defence systems and engineering facilities.
He is the one directing the bots to actively hunt down Samus in the game. The Psy-Bot Mimics are only able to mimic Sylux because they are under his control the whole time.
It's all in the game and the data scans.
1
u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26
That's...not projecting. That's controlling. He hacked into their network and ordered them to kill Samus. Locked in an order. That's it.
No projection involved. No directing involved. At least not necessarily, and not in any way implied to be the case. It's a nice headcanon though.
Edit: LMAO, blocked me because I called a headcanon, a nice headcanon. Crazy.
The Mimics literally cannot mimic Sylux without him projecting himself onto them to do so. They don't have any idea what he looks like.
Why couldn't they? He's hacked into their network. He has and shares all the information he needs. Also, he's sending them there, and he obviously knows how he looks like.
You are being annoyingly argumentative over semantics about this..
What semantics? There's not one implication made, and none of your reasonings actually hold. It's not impossible that's he projecting himself through them, but it's nowhere near implied or shown to be the case.
All we know is that those are disguised Psy-Bots send by Sylux to kill Samus, much like all other, non-disguised Psy-Bots are trying to kill Samus by his order.
None of this is semantical, but oh does someone dare say your headcanon isn't actually implied by the game, jeez. I was even complimenting the headcanon because I thought it was a nice idea and all, but that doesn't make it necessarily the truth.
1
u/Exciting-Position716 Sep 15 '26

u/The_Rider_11 Sep 15 '26
Unless I very heavily misinterpretated the cutscene in Prime 4 about his past, it was him being exuberant and leading his troop into certain death by refusing an order from his superiors to aquire a powerful weapon from the space pirates. His troop was massacrated and Samus saved him by destroying the weapon, which he got pissed off for because he wanted to take over the weapon. Or something around that.
10
u/Nirast25 Sep 15 '26
All we need are two sequels to Other M, and two for Federation Force, and Metroid will be a trilogy of trilogies of trilogies, assuming two more Prime games. /j

u/bamboochaLP Sep 15 '26
I agree on that, especially getting rid of sylux in prime 5...but for me, hunters, fed force and prime 4 already are a saga, we might call it the the GF/ hunter saga, which I hope will end with 5. I would also be very fine with just leaving things as open and confusing as it happened with prime 4's ending. we just remember it as an experiment and start a new saga with the next prime game lol

As I see it Ravenous will be the culmination of Samus Metroid DNA she got injected back in Fusion.
Ravenous will be about the great hunger as she turns more and more into a Metroid hybrid. Metroids are all extinct except Samus
We have the Space Ninjas that we know nothing of other than that they (most of them) look like bugs and that they want to eat and absorb Samus powers
We don’t know if it’s last remnants of the Space Pirates that went different ways after Mother Brains demise
We also don’t know what the Mawkin tribe have planned for Samus. We know that Raven Beak wanted Metroids to rule the galaxy.
We don’t know how they are planning to control Samus, perhaps they have a Mother Brain installed for such occasion? Not the same as in Metroid or Super but they surely have the blueprints to build one
2
u/Acrobatic_Sun_8045 Sep 15 '26
I think it’s more of the original three games being a trilogy and then starting with fusion, every game has added onto that. I appreciate how the series is actually invested in its past plot wise and seems to be building forward instead of just doing random side stories or jumbled timelines like other Nintendo series. But I don’t think it’s two trilogies.

Trilogies beause thematically and plotlines wise, the 6 games can be neatly organised into 2 distinct eras of 3 games, separated by all the things I said in my post and more.
Sakamoto said what he said 5 years ago, and Ravenous doesn't look like the beginning of a brand new story does it? Him saying that 5 years ago, before Ravenous existed, doesn't change anything or make any of my points about the very distinct sagas Samus has gone through invalid.

Most stories are broken up into three-Acts.
So most see trilogies as a way to convey a long overarching storyline with three movies/games.
Think about how most of these trilogy stories are told.
Fellowship of the Ring, Gears of War 1, The Matrix, Halo, whatever.
All three games/movies follow the basic "Act 1: establish world and characters. Act 2: Increase the stakes and cause a characters downfall only to rise stronger. Act 3: Hero(s) have learned, and the stakes are at a peak, so the hero(s) must finish the conflict before it's too late."
Obviously four Acts or more are a thing. But the three Acts are generally used more for the "beginning, middle, end" mentality.

I don't think there's that kind of plan - they're not making trilogies, they're just making games and will keep making them as long as there's an audience. From what I remember, Metroid Dread was seen as the end by Sakamoto. So, Ravenous already goes beyond his planned ending, If it makes business sense, there'll be more beyond Ravenous - when that happens, we won't be able to slot these titles into neat trilogies.

Metroid 2 should probably be included as well

u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
Samus Returns tells the complete story of Metroid II, with extra lore that links it to Fusion and Dread!

u/ExJokerr Sep 15 '26
Exactly! Playing fusion after metroid2(especially the remake) gives it even more meaning! I love those illustrations of metroid 2 remake

Metroid 1 to 3, Yellow/Orange Samus Metroid 4 to 6, Blue Samus
...you think, Metroid 7 to 9 will have Samus in her Red era?
1
u/milenkosmagic Sep 15 '26
Samus starts every adventure with minimal skills and tools. It would be cool if they had some high tech sci-fi explanation that those power ups she finds takes a long term toll, radioactive etc or something so she can't retain them for long periods of time. Maybe you can't FTL travel with them or they hyper age the host.
1
u/creepyluna-no1 Sep 15 '26
Oh yeah, probably. I think it would be cool if they remade Fusion more in the style of Dread and Ravenous, maybe make it a bit more open in terms of exploration. That or a Super remake, since its one of the most popular, yet unlike 1 or 2, it has not been remade, and it remaking either could go more leeway for them to make a new direction for the series while keeping the moment up

u/Martonimos Sep 15 '26
We’ll certainly see, but given that Dread was following up in the tease added to Samus Returns, I’m wondering if we aren’t in the middle of some “evil Chozo” saga that’s going to leave Fusion as the odd one out.
1
u/Suncook Sep 15 '26
I don't dislike the idea, but I feel like we need to see how Metroid 6 ends and what Metroid 7 is about before being certain.
1
u/Sentenal_ Sep 15 '26
The idea that Metroid has Trilogies (other than the Prime Trilogy) is a concept that has only existed since Ravenous's announcement in making 6 mainline Metroid Games, and thus allowing it to be divided into 3s. Each game builds off the previous one, each one sequentially feeding into the next. Its not like Super ended, and then Fusion came along and started completely fresh. Super ended and fed into the start of Fusion.

u/arkenney0 Sep 15 '26
Fusion wasn’t the beginning of a trilogy, it was just the introduction of the SA-X suit

u/Isotomayor12 Sep 15 '26
Nah, not triligies. They were just made in different eras. They are all continuations of each other (at least from what I can tell from ravenous). I think it's the context and timing of their release that makes it feel like a trilogy.

u/WarmBison4513 Sep 15 '26
First three games you are trying to drive the metroids to extinction, next three games you ARE the Metroid trying to survive extinction
1
u/NamiRocket Sep 15 '26
I dunno why we need to put everything in threes.
I think they're simply making another Metroid game. It's Metroid 6. I don't think it's any deeper than that.

u/AWACSAWACS Sep 15 '26
Since the Metroids went extinct in the third game Super Metroid, it simply appears as though there is a dividing line between the first three titles and those that followed. That is all there is to it.
Furthermore, at least in the PV revealed during last week's Nintendo Direct, Ravenous was not billed as "Metroid 6"

4-6 isn't the "X Parasite" trilogy, it's the Samus trilogy.
The first three games focused entirely on the metroids, the last three focus on Samus herself and objects from her past.

Except, is not a trilogy. Every time a games of those starts it references the previous one and even sometimes the one before making it all continuous and not devided into “trilogies”
1
u/Philosopher013 Sep 16 '26
I get this perspective, but honestly I think I'd just say it's a Mercury Steam trilogy with Samus Returns, Dread, and Ravenous. They're all rather similar gameplay styles and I honestly think Samus Returns' story unlocks are just as important as Fusion for understanding Dread.
1
u/trustanchor Green Crystal Enjoyer Sep 16 '26
I was thinking this too. Supposedly Dread was the end of the core Metroid story, but Ravenous feels distinctly like the end of a second trilogy. Metroid through Super is the intro to the Metroid, (supposed) extinction of the Metroid, and the final Metroid’s sacrifice to save its mother. Fusion starts a new trilogy by introducing the X, Dread explores the chaos of the X escaping SR388 and sets up Samus to become herself the final Metroid, and Ravenous will show us how Samus handles the all-consuming, dark power she’s inherited.

u/ViewtifulReaper Sep 16 '26
I know this is a little off topic but let’s get a prayer circle and cross our fingers and tied for Samus Returns switch 2 remaster sometime after ravenous.
1
u/maukenboost Sep 16 '26
I really hope they do get their Fusion remake bc thats what they pitched and it would all come full circle. The 2nd trilogy would all be made by them and it would all be on the same system. Would truly be incredible.

u/firsthandz3n Sep 16 '26
dread was the end of a trilogy that started with other m and I'm not kidding
1
u/RPG_Hacker Sep 16 '26
In the trailer, Samus talks about making it home. My personal theory is that the game will be about her trying to make her way back to the home planet of the Chozo in order to find a cure for her Metroid DNA - because if anyone knows how to treat Metroid DNA, it's probably gonna be the Chozo (or Chozo relics, at the very least).
1
u/pinelotiile Sep 16 '26
Mother Brain Trilogy, Prime Trilogy, X Parasite Trilogy. Only the Metroid franchise could house 3 goated trilogies 😎
1
u/NotJustBiking Sep 16 '26
Storywise sure, but it feels like this "modern 2D Metroid" started with Samus Returns
1
1
u/Chazok Sep 16 '26
So do you think that means ravenous will be the last we see of the X and Metroid DNA in Samus? If so what could be the next thematic point for Metroid 7?
1
u/ZenicAzra Sep 16 '26
Pretty sure Other M is between Super and Fusion. Just saying
1
u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 16 '26
You are right, though it's easy to consider it a spin off.
Also, by splitting the story into two trilogies, you can conveniently ignore it's existence and all the ways it weakens Fusions story retroactively...
1
u/MakoMary Sep 17 '26
If we’re being technical, Dread was supposed to be the end of an arc. Ravenous is probably the start of a new one
1
u/Arc_GB Sep 17 '26
While I personally wish the franchise would never end, if they did call it quits after Ravenous, I can see how they could just wrap it up and call it a day, too. I really hope we get to see more of Mercury Steam, they knocked it out of the park with Dread and Ravenous looks like it will live up to our expectations.
1
u/KnownAsAnother Sep 17 '26
Personally I'm just happy we're getting another game set after Fusion and Dread
Edit: so wait, what does that make Other M then since that's presumably set before Fusion?
1
u/EdibleFish1053 28d ago
I'm pretty much sure that in some interview Sakamoto said that Metroid Dread was the end of the Metroid arc that started with Metroid 1 (or zero mission if you want). That's why in the trailer it doesn't says "Metroid 6" cause i want to believe that Metroid Ravenous is the start of a new arc in the 2D series
1
u/Few-Flounder-8951895 26d ago
I don't think Zero Mission is part of the "first trilogy", from a story and timeline perspective it makes more sense that the "first trilogy" is Samus Returns, Super and Other M.

Idk, to me Ravenous is the beginning of a new saga, that’s why it wasn’t called Metroid 6 at the beginning.
1
u/Artistic_Climate_639 4d ago
Although Metroid Dread doesn't actually refer to itself as Metroid 5 when opening the game as is the case with the previous 4. So I wouldn't count it out as being Metroid 6 because it didn't say so in the trailer.

I miss the "S" logo, I guess It was exclusive for MP and Fusion... Indeed, the beguining of some triology.

And Twilight Princess is the end of the Ocarina trilogy. Nintendo don’t see it this way. Idc.

I deleted my 15 year old account at the end of last year and made another one...what do you think my end goal is if not just to discuss Metroid?

u/Dizzy-Definition9352 Sep 15 '26
Engagement bait? I'm just sharing my thoughts to have a discussion...what do I have to gain from engagement?

Meh. The last 2 games are loosely related as far as I’m concerned. Let me know when Nintendo stops being scared and cheap and finally makes their own game again

Metroid 1 to 3, Samus in her Yellow/Orange Era
Metroid 4 to 6, Samus in her Blue Era
You think Metroid 7 to 9 will be Samus in her Red Era? I would've said Green but she already has green with the Metroid Suit lol
