Question Motion designers falling head over heels for AI

Ive worked with a few veteran motion designers who have fallen head over heels for AI. Before AI, they were decorated, and well established in their craft, but as soon as the whole AI thing took off, they seem to have completely abandoned 3D motion design and spend 99% of their time designing in AI, and even seem to get a hair annoyed at others who dont fully embrace the AI workflow.

How can people who were so invested in the industry, and came up during a time where you had to go through the process to create a final result, using your skill, suddenly become so complacent in just using all AI tools and are just obsessed with getting things done as quickly and easily as possible?

Could it be that years of abuse from the industry just jaded them and all they care about now is just getting the work done and getting home?

Has anyone else experienced this when working with other motion designers today?

Question How much should a charge?

A client of mine (a B2B marketing agency with €1 million in annual revenue and about 25 employees) has asked me to create a video similar to this one for their company. I would handle everything myself—from the vision board and animations to the sound design. How much should I charge? (I am a freelancer based in Italy, with 4 years of experience in video editing and nearly 3 years in motion graphics.)

Question How do I deal with like senior designers drooling over opus and AI motion design rather than actual motion design.

I'm a senior motion designer (5+ years) working on product motion. Lately my team and leadership are chasing every new AI motion tool. The results from tools like Opus can look impressive at first glance, but the quality isn't there. I'm aiming for Apple-level motion: considered easing, physics that feel right, consistency across the system. As they always we want apple level of motion design in their launch videos and all. The problem is that leadership doesn't seem to notice the difference, and they approve AI output that lacks craft. Another motion designer on my team leans on AI for almost everything and ships mediocre results with minimal effort. Because that gets approved, it's making it hard to justify the time I put into doing things properly. I don't want to just complain. How do you handle a team where taste and craft aren't valued, and speed plus novelty win? Do you fight it, adapt, or leave?

Question 11 years in motion graphics. Always headhunted before, now 6 months applying with 0 interviews. What changed?

Hey everyone, I’ve been in motion graphics for about 11 years, working across education, IT, advertising, television, design agencies, and web3. My background blends creative production and brand communications, with strong experience in 2D/3D motion (After Effects, Cinema 4D + Redshift) and the full Adobe suite. I was also the motion graphics domain expert at one of the top educational institutions for creative technologies, where I developed the learning program for motion design students.

Until now, I never really had to apply for jobs, I was always headhunted or recommended. But for the first time, I started applying directly and in 6 months, not a single interview.

My CV is ATS-optimized and tested, and I’m not even targeting senior roles. I’ve been applying to almost any position that matches my skillset.

So I’m wondering: • Has the job market really shifted this much? • Are agencies and studios mainly hiring juniors or freelancers now? • Or is there something experienced creatives need to rethink when applying cold in 2025?

Would really appreciate honest feedback or similar experiences.

Question Advice for pivoting out of Motion Design

Hey, hope everyone is well.

So I've been a freelance motion designer for 20 years now and between the feeling of burn out due to being on the front lines of the creative process (which is often limited due to client restrictions or timeframes), and the fact that the media industry seems to be in a state of economic chaos, so work isn't regular... I'm starting to think about pivoting my career into something that's a bit more stable.

So I'm wondering if anyone here is seeing more success or opportunities by pivoting into something else?

I've been considering producing, creative direction, social media management, video editing, UI / UX design and content creation for events, all of which I have experience in.

Does anyone have any success stories in finding a different path, or creating a successful side business, or changing careers completely and you're now just doing motion design for fun?

Question I charged $4,300 for this creative. Looking for an honest gut check did I undersell myself?

Hey everyone,

I just wrapped this project and billed $4,000 for the total. Now that it’s out the door, I’m trying to do a gut check on my rate

Important Context:

  • Provided by Client: The chest animations, UI assets, and minigame animations were provided as raw assets.
  • My Work: I was responsible for the overall creative direction, the UI animations, the flow, transitions, and a large portion of the scripts and copy.
  • Timeline: Roughly 2 weeks of production.
  • Deliverables: The 1920x1080 cut (no source files or additional versions included).

I would have liked the text to be more dynamic and for the overall piece to have a snappier feel, but the client wasn't open to that direction so here we are.

Given that the core assets were provided, but the "heavy lifting" for the scripts, visual storytelling, and AE compositing was on me, would you have charged more? I’m trying to figure tha out.

Be as honest as you want with the feedback on the motion work!

Question Does anyone know how this was done?

I was watching Frame Rate TV’s Manifesto video and got really curious about how that spiral of images was made.

Even though they included a breakdown, I still couldn’t quite understand how they achieved that scale offset that creates the spiral effect.

Does anyone know how this was done?

Question Now that Cavalry Pro is free (and Autograph), is it still worth to continue learning After Effects as a beginner?

I’m like 1-2 months in AE and I’m not sure if it’s worth to continue learning, now that we have free (arguably professional-grade) alternatives. What do you guys think?

Question Career Change?

I've been working in motion design for almost 10 years now, freelancing for about 2.5. I have steady (albeit often boring) work, a good network, and feel good about my skillset.

But recently I've been just feeling a bit burned out. I don't feel excited about many projects, don't feel inspired to create personal work, don't want to attend meetups or even really talk about the work.

I cut a new reel and was planning on using it to attract some new clients, see if I can push for some more exciting work, but I haven't posted it yet because I just don't feel like chasing new work- it sounds exhausting.

I'm overall just feeling stuck. I know the job market isn't good, and I'm super lucky to be working for myself and making good money doing it, but man it just feels empty. Any thoughts on adjacent careers, or even jobs that are somewhat transferable?

I love working with people, I'd love to do something community-focused; something tangible that actually helps people would be great. And frankly I'd love to spend waaay less time on a computer.

Not sure if I'm going to really change things up, or just looking to vent, but I'd love to hear people's experiences.

Question Do you share Source file (pf) with clients?

I just delivered a Client work which was an Ad for a branding studio. They approved the edit and are also asking for the open source file? As a motion designer, do you share them or not, and like if you do , You charge and extra? Cause handing it over feels like I'm just giving away my expertise and they can prolly use it to alter for other videos which is future work gone for me. What's your thoughts on these guys?

Question Client paying too much?

This week I had a surprise rush job from a new client (I've worked with him for another company from whom his agency took my future work) whose primary motion designer is on medical leave. I happened to already be booked out for the week so I offered to help at my overtime rate.

He requested 24 hours of my time, which came out to about $4k, but when he showed me the actual scope of work it turns out to be only about a day's worth of work. Very easy stuff.

Like anyone, I often achieve things faster than quoted and still bill the full amount, but I also get slapped around sometimes too. This feels like an excessive amount to bill, but he said it's what he had allocated for it and was ecstatic to have me help out.

My question for y'all is, do I take the money and run or cut him a break somewhere in between? I was brought on as a secondary backup animator behind another guy, so it's not like I'm going to get more work for him in the future other than in similar emergency situations. I could really use the money after a painfully slow summer, but my conscience is grating at me about this.

The other question is, if I just take it and run, do I turn in the deliverables suspiciously early, implying I did it in fewer hours but helping them stay ahead of schedule, or do I delay them artificially to maintain the illusion?

Thoughts? I've been doing this over a decade and still find myself having questions like this at times.
