Technique/Tips Muay Thai after LASIK

I had LASIK surgery on my right eye on June 26, 2026, and my recovery has been smooth so far. I have no current symptoms, and at my last follow-up appointment on September 8, my surgeon told me everything looked good and that I could return to sports.

However, I didn't specifically ask about combat sports at the time.

I've been wanting to start Muay Thai for a while. My initial goal is to learn the techniques and improve my conditioning, but eventually I'd love to do sparring and possibly compete.

I've read about the risk of traumatic flap displacement after LASIK, even years after surgery. At the same time, I've come across people here who say they've continued boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, or other contact sports after LASIK without any problems.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people with firsthand experience

UPDATE: I contacted the doctor who performed my LASIK surgery and specifically asked about Muay Thai, sparring, and competing. He told me that if someone who has had LASIK receives blow to the eye, the corneal flap can become displaced. He said it's risky and that he doesn't recommend it.

This has been pretty disappointing to hear because really looking forward to training in Muay Thai and eventually competing.

Knocked unconscious how long do I wait to get back training.

Hey Im a beginner in mma 2 days ago I was sparring a more experienced fighter and got knocked unconscious I can’t remember who knocked me out or how I got home or what move knocked me out . But the next day i felt ok and went to work I’ve yet to go to the ER because it’s expensive. So I’ve looked up symptoms of brain injury and don’t have any worrying symptoms no headaches, no throwing up or dizziness, just getting irritated a little faster
or feel sad for some reason but overall I feel fine. how long until I can return to sparring and training like normal.

I love kickboxing, but schools keeps dragging me away

My name is Sidney and when I started high school I got bullied heaps.

I got raisins thrown in my locker people shoving leaves and verbal abuse in my way out of it was when I started boxing. I did it for three months did sparring every five days of the week.

I felt happy that I was building timing strength and footwork.

Then I moved into kickboxing because my dream is to be in the UFC and have a gold belt around my waist. I felt exhausted for the next three weeks using kicks was tiring but I kept going because I knew it was gonna get easier and it would benefit me but after that I went back to being nervous about sparring which is something I’m not normally used to because I spotted with heaps of boxers.

After that I kept training and every week it felt easier than my dad won’t let me train if school ain’t my priority.

I just came back from 🇹🇭 Thailand spending time from my family and I was ready to get back in it after four weeks off but then I have a biology test a health test a math test and an English test the week I came back and there with me.

I only missed two weeks of school that is fucked I’m just worried that if life ever gave me trouble like someone tried to fight me and I lose because I haven’t trained in awhile.

I’m worried that’s why I wanna train because I know there’s always gonna be someone out there.

Anyways, I’m not expecting anyone to read this paragraph but if any of you do, I’d like to hear your advice🥊❤️ and I’m not at the best at English too 😬

I’ve been training for a little over 2 years and have picked up a few different styles (traditional MT/Japanese-style KB). Recorded a round of bag work after a 2 hour class recently to watch my technique. I would like to make my amateur debut soon. For context, I am 6’0” 290lbs. I am very open to criticism and would love to hear your thoughts. Thank!

Technique/Tips How do I get over my own ego?

The number one thing that has prevented me from beginning training again is and has been my ego. I feel like I am constantly looking for a school that is "good enough" for me, aka very legitimate and well-established with a lot of history.

At the same time literally the primary reasons I haven't started aside from procrastinating are:

  1. I would be new, and I would be awful, and I do not want to look like I am not competent.
  2. I would be uncomfortable, and I do not like that.

I know these are literally the most obvious things on the planet, but that's what it is. I feel like if I just keep looking I will eventually find somewhere I can start.

At the same time, I am constantly training and never going to a school so that I won't look stupid or get winded or look bad.

Every single thing I am doing is either procrastinating actually starting, or trying to guarantee I will not look stupid or take any damage to my ego.

I know what the problem is, but do not know how to fix it.

My new pair of gloves from Superare arrived today. One of the gloves arrived with this tiny tear/peeling on them.

Is this fine as is? Or is there a simple DIY to keep the tear from spreading?

I don’t want to go through another exchange process with them as I already did and these were the replacement pair. The process took almost 2 weeks and I need to start using these today since my current pair Yakkaos have reached their limit after 3 years of heavy usage.

What's the deal with the Rifdean Masdor situation? Underfunded, set up to fail, or just unprofessional?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I've been trying to make sense of the whole Rifdean situation, and the more I see, the more confused I get.

From what I've seen:

  • He apparently fought without a proper coach or corner team, bringing only his girlfriend and family.
  • There were stories just 2–3 days before the fight where he was still asking for sponsors.
  • He ended up losing by TKO.
  • After the loss, he demanded a rematch.
  • He apparently badmouthed ONE Championship afterward, which prompted Chatri to respond and criticize his unprofessionalism.

So what exactly is going on here?

Is Rifdean genuinely underfunded and struggling to get the support he needs? Was he somehow put in a position where he was set up to fail? Or is this a case of a fighter who isn't managing his career properly and is now blaming the promotion for the outcome?

I'm not trying to blindly hate on the guy, because fighting at that level without a proper team sounds rough. But at the same time, asking for sponsors days before a fight, showing up without a proper corner, losing by TKO, and then asking for a rematch while publicly criticizing the promotion doesn't exactly look good.

Am I missing some important context here?

Does anyone know what actually happened behind the scenes, or have any insight into Rifdean's situation with ONE?

What’s one thing you stopped caring about as you got better?

As you get better at Muay Thai, you start to realize some things just aren’t that important anymore. I know for me, I used to care about looking good on the bag and “keeping up” with everyone else. Over time, I’ve learned to focus more on my own progress instead.

How about yall?

First fight didn't go as planned

Had my first amateur fight yesterday. I am trying to evaluate what I could have done better to prepare myself for the fight night nerves. I had a good first round but then got completely overwhelmed by nerves and adrenaline. Forgot all my training, all the combos I had practiced 100s of times. Forgot about my guard despite repeatedly making a mental note to keep my guard tight as I got into the ring. Got clocked again and again until the ref stepped in and stopped the fight. Legs felt like lead from round 2 onwards despite months of dialling in my cardio and conditioning. By round 3 I basically felt untrained. It was also my opponents amateur debut but he was a lot more calm, confident, and precise. Generally feeling pretty upset with my performance. I want to do this again but really not sure where to go from here. I am not upset that I lost, but more that at some point in the fight I just started operating on base instinct and fear.

What would your ideal home gym look like for Muay Thai conditioning?

Not everyone has enough space for a heavy bag, a full rack, and a separate conditioning area at home.

If you were putting together a practical home gym for Muay Thai, what would make the cut? A heavy bag, adjustable dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, a bench, or just enough open floor space for shadowboxing and movement drills?

I'm curious which equipment you actually use consistently, rather than what looks impressive in a setup tour. What would you buy first, and what would you skip?

Sparring after first training ?

Hello, I am very confused rn, because I (m16) saw multiples posts of people who said they waited months before sparring as beginners, but, I had my first Muay Thai training some days ago, and, like, 10 minutes before the end of the training, everyone, me included, sparred. They told me to go chill but some people around me werent. I dont know if they spar at the end of every training but is it normal ? Thank you very much, have a great day

If you had to start again what would you prioritise

Hello all I’m new to Muay Thai, have trained for few months. A question I always ask experienced people is if you had to start again with what you know now what would you prioritise to be the best version of yourself in this sport?
