News NJ Rep. Tom Kean Jr. reveals he was hospitalized for depression during mysterious 4-month absence from Congress

U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) returned to Congress today after being gone for 117 days, revealing he was hospitalized for depression. In a speech on the House floor, the 57-year-old congressman said doctors diagnosed him with depression and recommended he stay hospitalized for the fastest recovery.

He said he initially wanted to "push through" but followed medical advice. "There is no timeline for healing. There is no timeline for recovery. Only the work of getting better one day at a time," Kean said. Kean last voted on March 5. For months, his staff would only say he was dealing with a "personal health matter" and would return "soon."

Even top Republicans in New Jersey said they didn't know what was going on. His social media stayed active and his team said he was working remotely, but he hadn't been seen in public until last week. Kean is running for re-election in one of the nation's most competitive House races.

His Democratic opponent has made his absence a campaign issue, and some wondered if he'd drop out of the race. He says he's staying in with Trump's endorsement. House Speaker Mike Johnson said today the condition Kean was fighting is "very, very common" and predicted he'll get "a lot of empathy."

Kean said: "Asking for help is not a weakness, it is a strength. This is not a partisan issue."

Urge Governor Sherrill to reject the Trump Education Tax Credit Program - Sign the Petition!
https://c.org/cTZ5rSCj8D

We have identified 19 major issues with the regulations that are problematic for public education and the regulations are not even finalized yet.

See the issues at this link:

https://njpecspeakingtruth.substack.com/p/an-open-letter-to-governor-mikie

New Jersey can opt-in or opt-out of the program on a yearly basis. So what's the rush? Why not wait until all the problems have been addressed, discussed and resolved before jumping the gun!

The hypocracy of Tom Kean, Jr

He places ads about his opponent getting rich while he's worth more than 10 million dollars. Also another ad with a woman saying how his opponent, Rebecca Bennett, has blocked her daughter's crucial medical care without stating what the girl's medical condition is. I find anything that he says or does to be perfidity of the Nth degree. He's a prime reason why I have lost any respect for Republicans.

Join SUB/URBAN REVIEW & Bloomfield Avenue Is a Commons for a screening and discussion on the future of streets, public space, & civic life.
Close Encounters on the 34th Avenue Kind: A Documentary Screening & Conversation
Join us at Montclair State University for a special screening of *Close Encounters of the 34th Avenue Kind*, an exciting documentary exploring how streets, transportation, and public space shape our daily lives and communities. It IS inspiring, and we’re happy to have it kick off SUB/URBAN REVIEWS’ Bloomfield Avenue is a Commons initiative.

The documentary features the work and perspective of Clarence Eckerson Jr., founder of Streetfilms and one of the world's most influential storytellers on transportation, cities, and public space. For more than two decades, Eckerson has documented innovative streets, transit systems, and public spaces worldwide, helping audiences understand how community design affects safety, mobility, health, economic opportunity, and quality of life.Following the screening, Eckerson will join local leaders and advocates for a 3 practice based conversation about what these ideas mean for New Jersey.

Discussants will represent organizations including SOMA Bike Bus, Maplewood Bike Lanes, Bike JC, ROUTE, NJ Transit, Bloomfield Urbanist Society, Transit Newark, VELO Bloomfield, Montclair Bike Walk, Hudson Complete Streets, immigrant rights groups, Stronger Montclair, and other community stakeholders working to create safer, more accessible, and more vibrant public spaces.Whether you're interested in transportation, community development, public policy, civic engagement, or simply curious about how our streets shape everyday life, this event offers a chance to engage in one of the most important public conversations facing New Jersey
today.

Date: October 15, 2026
Time: 6:30 PM
Location: Montclair State University, CCOM Presentation Hall

This event is presented as part of Bloomfield Avenue Is a Commons, a project by SUB/URBAN REVIEW. Bloomfield Avenue Is a Commons reimagines the Avenue as shared civic infrastructure that connects not only cities & towns, urban & suburban, but people. Using public discourse, in-person events, storytelling, art, and analysis, we explore how streets can function as places for connection and democratic life.

Come for the film. Stay for the conversation. Leave with a new way of seeing the places we inhabit every day
