Meme needing explanation Peter, why are these guys considered "incels"?
6.7k
u/Usual_Purchase_9567 1d ago
Incel has pretty much lost its meaning. It's just a word to call people you don't like or disagree with. Like Trumper or leftie.
I got called an incel recently. I'm married.

No I mean my man would be right. If your wife only fucks other guys, you'd be an incel.

u/Ok-Possibility-1206 1d ago edited 1d ago
Thinking about it, she wouldn't HAVE TO fuck other guys, just NOT fuck the husband. Also, nobody else fuck him either. Then, technically, he could potentially be a married incel.

deadbedrooms is just failing sexual relationships. I haven’t stumbled into it for years (maybe decades.. god I’m old), but it used to just be about relationships where people had slowly fallen out of having sex and didn’t know / wanted advice on how to recover.

Bro holy fuck. I have a somewhat problematic 13 year old who straight up blows us off when we request she follow our household expectations (take care of your space, pick up after yourself, help clean shared things like picking up after dinner and litter boxes etc, nothing crazy). We have 2 others that got it, no issues. All honor roll students too. But BOY HOWDY that place makes me feel like fucking SuperDad. Yikes. I feel for those people, they are genuinely having a hard time but it seems like 90% is mental health or consequences of bad decisions. Some hard reads in there.

Term is volcel. Not same as incel. The involuntary of incel is the important part. Though the term is misused and was hijacked to begin.

18
u/lilbabybrutus 1d ago
You can involuntarily be subjected to cuckholdry, so we really dont know if its incel or volcel
→ More replies (9)10
u/Kaylend 1d ago
So this is the misuse part.
Just because the person isn't having sex doesn't mean they are involuntarily celibate. Can they work towards changing the situation they are in to get what they want? With in reason of course.
That originally incel was for those unfortunate people who were very undesirable because both nature and life can be cruel and careless.
then morphed to misogynistic groups of men who used it to vent grievances of entitlement to sex.
Now here, being used as a catch-all for someone who isn't getting laid.
Unless there is serious long term repercussions to ending the marriage and seeking a new partner, they are not involuntarily celibate.
→ More replies (5)10
u/bikeguideraz 1d ago

You missed the point of the person you're replying to. People throw that word around in assumption. I was called a Trumper several times, even after Trump literally ruined my life with his policies post election. I have more reason to hate that person than nearly anyone, and guess what? Random idiots on the internet throw the word around to the point that, yes, it's unfortunately lost its meaning. Or it's being misused constantly to the point of having basically zero meaning.

Those “I bet you… 😝” “you probably… 😝” insults.
Like it would work if it actually applied to the person you are trying to insult, it actually might be something they are self conscious about, but if they aren’t an incel going “I bet you are an incel! 🤣” doesn’t really mean anything at all. “Uhh, no I’m not?”

So that's like 2 women to 3 men in what must be a very small sample size of a conference hall, and the photo had to be cropped and centered asymmetrically to remove as much of a person I strongly suspect as being a woman in the front row as possible.

u/yakimawashington 1d ago
The joke isn't noticing the lack of women. The joke is that she built herself a fanbase of incels because of what happened in the film.
Potential spoiler: Main dude in the film never stood a chance with a girl not because she would never be interested, but because he was way to insecure of himself. She even asked him, point blank, multiple times if he liked her and still wouldn't tell her, let alone make a move. One of them was literally while he was taking her home. Even after the wish, she tried to get him off the car to stay with her and he closes the car door and puts in his seatbelt! Golden opportunities handed to him on a silver platter. Later on, he even asks her "what's so wrong with being with me?" as if it's her fault they couldn't be together organically, not his.
He decides to make her fall in love with him and keep it that way... even after realizes she is truly suffering under her non-automomous state as if he's entitled to her unconditional, hopeless-obsessed state of infatuation with him. A lot of people have different opinions on what "incel" means, but all the above would check the boxes of many people's definition of the word.
The joke is that incels would love this sort of fantasy to be true .. especially with someone as charming as Inde who was already seemingly willing to give an "incel" a chance.
I'm not saying it's a hilarious joke, in good taste, or that I necessarily condone it, but that was my interpretation of it.

Yeah incel really lost all meaning when it became something you called other people rather than something they called themselves.
Back in the day, there was valid critique around it because it was a movement of men calling themselves that, insisting they were somehow victimized by a lack of sex. It was an extremely toxic part of the manosphere.
But now it’s just an insult people throw around to mean “haha you don’t have sex”. Basically the same as a high school bully calling someone “virgin,” and just as vapid.

There term incel comes from a Canadian woman. She was using it to describe herself.
The Original Meaning: Alana launched an all-text website called "Alana’s Involuntary Celibacy Project" to serve as a safe, gender-neutral, and supportive online community for lonely people, people who had never been in a relationship, or those struggling with social awkwardness and dating.
Crazy how something a woman came up with to describe herself and to be inclusive with others, has turned into an insult used by women to hurt mens feelings.

Well there's always a few unpleasant individuals who are obsessed with a celebrity. But there is nothing wrong about finding people attractive. Gen Z might be on guard about this sort of thing because they have been on the recieving end of a bunch of weird and abusive behavior.
56
u/EatADingDong 1d ago
This is just my own working theory, but my thesis is that Gen Z has actually been LESS on the receiving end of any of this stuff, because so many of them never went outside when growing up and they were raised by the early smartphones.
They thus never developed the necessary coping mechanisms to deal with the inevitabilities of this world and the fact that people are people and thus will do weird shit. That's why so many of them are also so weird about sex.
They're fighting this uphill battle of trying to bend the world to their will and change human behavior while us older folks grew up with a more apathetic "it is what it is" mindset and just learned to deal with it. Maybe it's a bit commendable even, I don't know.

The movie Obsession you could say had to do with an incel that would rather make a wish to get the girl than to actually face his fears and talk to her like a human being.
So the leap in logic here (and the joke) is that instead of just a movie about incels, Inde is choosing a fandom that is popular with incels.
So the common thread is that her popularity is because of incels. That’s the joke. It’s not a great one, but it’s what the OP meme is saying.
37
u/Elros22 1d ago
Parlayed her popularity to playing in the next X-Men movie.
That's an odd way to put it. Is she parlaying her popularity, or did she get another job after being very successful in a debut role?
22
u/Serrisen 1d ago
In professional use, that's how parlay is used. It's to take a small role and use it to develop into a big role.
Merriam Webster: "to increase or otherwise transform into something of much greater value" (She parlayed $5,000 and years of hard work into a multimillion-dollar company.)
Fwiw I didn't know this usage existed either
→ More replies (1)5
u/P4u113 1d ago
She got flooded with horror movie offers after Obsession killed at the box office. She famously turned down the other horror roles to pick the X-Men movie.
One definition of parlay is to take a small asset, skill, or winning into something much larger. I used parlay here to mean she’s leaving her horror movie type-cast role to catapult into mainstream movies.

As someone less agitated... It does get a bit frustrating when people are so quick to label you as an Andrew Tate stan for having a nuanced opinion about anything related to men. It honestly just shuts down the conversation and is pretty counterproductive.
"Hey, it kinda sucks that men get their feelings invalidated when they try to be vulnerable" and then getting my feelings invalidated is something that has happened to me personally many times.

Same but trying to tell my story about why I’m uncomfortable with hugs due to sexual abuse I received growing up. It’s very telling when all I hear is “a pretty girl grabbed your junk you know you liked it” from every girl I mention it to.

you're*
you're*
you're*
you're*
Your is possessive. It implies something belongs to someone.
You're is a contraction of you are. If you can sub the words you are in, that's the one you want.

I can see four women in that pic...and it's cropped.
Whole upper left hand side....hell I'd have five if I counted the woman in the green top but I can't see her face.

It's both worrying and uplifting that nobody in the entire thread has the balls to say the U-word.
They are considered "incels" because they are not conventionally attractive, and thus considered UGLY.
Incel is now a word you use to describe a person you're not attracted to.

I got called an incel for correcting my lady friend who claimed it's physically impossible to "smash into" someone's cervix during sex.
I got called GAY for saying "no thank you"

Danielle Fabiola "Inde" Navarrette is an American actress. She began acting in short films as a teenager, before landing roles in the drama series 13 Reasons Why and the superhero series Superman & Lois.
Incel is short for involuntarily celibate. People who want to have sex, but nobody wants to have sex with them.
There are 3 kinds of incel.
The kind that follow dudebro podcasters and pickup artists because they want a cheat code into women’s pants but actually just come off as creeps. See: anyone who follows Andrew Tate. These are easily the most toxic
The kind that have given up on pursuing sex (but still want it) and have formed parasocial relationships with famous women (often on onlyfans). That’s what Oop was implying given the famous woman with a predominantly male audience (as long as you don’t scrutinize the image at all). See the last episode of Nathan for You or any man who has ever paid to see the same woman naked multiple times.
The third kind are just normal dudes who are awkward but keep trying. You may have heard about The lonesome looser, he keeps trying.

Disappointing that you simultaneously brought me back the fun summer of '79 but somehow misspelled loser despite linking to vid where correct spelling is featured prominently, not that anyone should need the help.

You get called incel for anything these days. It just sounds like a way to try to shut up anyone who disagrees with you.

Like all insults , once the wrong people get ahold of it and make it their "go to" insult it loses all meaning.
Modern Incel is a completely different term from the Incels of the 90s.
