Discussion How exactly would Proton follow this?

Post image

Would someone need to scan their face or something? Wouldn’t this defeat the purpose of a no-logs VPN? I know OFCOM has been going for 4chan for avoiding doing the age verification thing and lost I believe, with 4chan citing they’re US-based and shouldn’t be subjected to UK laws. Could Proton use a similar excuse?

Was using ProtonVPN stealth protocol and I'm impressed (in a bad way) at the lengths that companies go to to prevent the use of VPNs. Time to get rid of Amazon Prime

I can't open a YouTube video in a new tab now without this shit popping up. I can't go to Google Search without having to see this crap. I can't read a news article without seeing this crap. It doesn't matter what server I'm using.

I used to use Mullvad, and honestly, it wasn't much better, so I'm not sure what to do.

Discussion We analyzed 7,000+ mobile VPN apps. 64 of the 390 available in the US are Chinese-owned, 31 of those hide it behind shell companies, and 85% of all 7,000+ contain trackers.

Hey everyone,

We've just published the results of a months-long survey of over 7,000 mobile VPN apps, and we wanted to tell you a bit more about what we uncovered.

What we found

  • 85% of US-available VPN apps contain at least one tracker, collecting things like GAID (the Android advertising ID), device model, network type and carrier name.
  • 64 apps actively collect physical location via GPS or other geolocation, and these include several of the most downloaded VPNs in the US: VPN Proxy Master, VPN-Fast VPN Super and X-VPN. Roughly 1 in 5 downloads in our dataset came from an app in this group.
  • 64 of the 390 apps are owned by Chinese companies, and 31 of those route ownership through shell companies registered in Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK. Reminder that under Chinese law those companies must make user data available to the government on request.
  • Three of the apps are owned by market research firms: Phone Guardian Safe WiFi (Sensor Tower), My Mobile Secure VPN (Comscore), and Urban VPN (BiScience, which Infosecurity Magazine reported was harvesting user conversations with AI chat services).
  • Aggregate downloads by tracker destination: China 1.5M, Russia 1.4M, Israel 2.6M, Five Eyes 4.6M, and 800k for apps sending to all three of the first group.

As some of you might already be aware, every byte you send while connected to a VPN routes through the operator's infrastructure, so an app monetising your traffic looks identical from your side to one that isn't. Meanwhile the onus is on Apple and Google to verify that a developer submitted an identity and a privacy policy that is actually valid; something which has been neglected.

As always, stay safe,

Proton Team.

Discussion Why has Proton VPN gotten so terrible?

I've been using this for years, and I've been a paid customer for 3ish years, and signed up for two more a few months back. And now the VPN is nearly worthless. I use on my Linux desktop and my iPhone, and I frequently have to change the server or completely disconnect just to do basic things like access websites and maps, including relatively simple sites like DuckDuckGo.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I won't even get to the fact that websites and email servers sometimes block proton-based web requests and emails because so many use Proton for spam.

I love the email and calendars, but the VPN seems so slow and not worth having some days.

Discussion protonvpn is *too* saturated

90% (if not higher) of ip addresses from protonvpn are dirty, meaning they show up on every spam and bot ip address database, i dislike how im being bombarded with captchas everytime i visit a site. i just want to read a small article and i have to face a cloudflare challenge its getting annoying, even if the server load is just around 11% you can feel every how every site is not trusting your ip (captchas everywhere!!)

i think protonvpn should add a feature where the allocate a portion of ip address and make it so that users wont be able to select, kinda like free version limits but for pro users like me too who just wants to browse the internet behind a vpn, like a rotating proxy where we get a different ip flatly and equally allocated to users

Discussion Is it just me or has ProtonVPN gone awful sometime in the past few months?

ProtonVPN used to be amazing, almost not even noticing that I had a VPN. I was paying for it. However in the past couple of months, and especially past few weeks, it has gotten to being downright unusable. Websites take forever to load, impossible to load onto video games, etc. whereas before it was hardly noticeable!

One game I used to play online with VPN had <150ms ping, now it regularly has 250ms+, often 300ms+! Terrible!

And as I write this today, it's failing to connect to ANY servers, and before when I was able to connect to servers, I couldn't even watch f'in YouTube or browse Reddit!

I'm paying for a monthly subscription and really liked it at first but right now it seems downright unusable as if the service has gone to shit!

Edit: mainly Australian servers. But I'm having issues with New Zealand too.

Im hearing rumours that the government are going to block VPNs. Irrespective of the rumours being true or not how would one get around this situation? Or do I pack up and leave?

Discussion The Internet appears hostile towards ProtonVPN IPs

I switched to Proton unlimited and used PIA as my VPN previously. ever since I switched to Proton, I had nothing but problems with websites and YouTube. I hopped around different VPN locations, trying to find one that just works with everything without massive latency to my location, but to no avail. Cloudflare hosted sites don't seem to like ProtonVPN IPs at all. Is anyone else having the same experience or knows how to work around this?

//

Edit: It appears that quite a few experience at least some issues here and there. I hope someone from the Proton team could respond and tell us if this is something they see happening as well.

Edit 2: It's not just cloudflare, but cloudfront as well.

Discussion I had to discontinue using Proton VPN and switch to a different VPN provider

I have a paid subscription to Proton because I use most of their products and like the company. However, I encountered a couple issues with Proton VPN, one of which I consider critical. From least significant to most significant:

  1. The GUI app in Linux: I use Linux on all of my personal computers (A Fedora-based distro on my desktop, and Debian/Ubuntu on my laptops). The Linux GUI is terrible. I know I can use Proton VPN via CLI, but I simply like having a nice, functional GUI.
  2. I have a laptop with Debian that I only use to play relaxing background noise through attached speakers at night while I sleep. The VPN kept disconnecting every day when I'd lock the laptop, and the only way I could get it to reconnect was to restart the laptop.
  3. Split tunneling with kill switch: I use a specific app that can't be used with a VPN, which necessitates the use of split tunneling for this app. However, Proton VPN does not allow the kill switch to be active when you have split tunneling in use. I had to choose between either not using this app on my phone, or not having a kill switch, neither of which were acceptable. The other VPN I switched to allows both simultaneously.
  4. The kill switch completely failed. I had the advanced kill switch active 24/7 on my desktop. I was using the internet yesterday when I noticed that the VPN was disconnected. Despite the advanced kill switch being turned on and the VPN being disconnected, I was still able to use the internet like normal. I don't know why or how that happened but it was completely unacceptable.
