Guide Dedicated Servers - A How-To Guide

Hosting options

First thing first, you need to chose how you want to host your dedicated server!

Dedicated servers can be hosted:

  • via a third party hosting partner Shockbyte,
  • on a computer you own at home,
  • on a computer in the cloud that you setup yourself.
Shockbyte At Home Cloud
Difficulty Easiest Hard Hardest
Price Set Electricity costs Depends on capacity
Progression Secured Manual back ups Manual back ups

Hosting at Shockbyte

If you opt to use our hosting partner Shockbyte, simply go to their website to rent a RuneScape: Dragonwilds dedicated server.

You will need to enter some configuration values. To do so, go to the config page:

Then click on RuneScape: Dragonwilds Settings

and edit the settings in here. More info about Config Settings can be found in a following section named "Configuration Values".

Optionally, you can set the World to one from your personal library. More info can be found in a following section named "World Management".

Once you have set those values, write down your World Name and start the server.

You can now play! Find your server by following the steps in the section "Finding My Dedicated Server".

Hosting at home

Prerequisites

Dedicated servers will only run on 64-bit OS. Both Windows and Linux are supported.

RAM required is 2Gb + 1Gb per player. The server can support up to 6 players as of 0.11 (March 2026).

Ports

Dedicated Servers use ports starting with 7777 by default. The second server will use 7778 and so on. You must ensure that the port(s) can be reached directly. This means your Firewall, Router(s) and ISP must forward those ports for UDP.

Please note that:

  • every router between you and your ISP will need port forwarding.
  • some ISPs will prevent you from doing port forwarding altogether. Some will have admin tools that allow you to do it. Others will require you to contact their Client Support.
  • This website portforward.com has a lot of details on how to forward ports.
  • if your server appears in the list of servers for other players, but is not joinable, then Port Forwarding likely failed somewhere.

Installing the game

The game is distributed via Steam or Steam Command. Simply acquire the free product "RuneScape: Dragonwilds - Dedicated Servers" on Steam.

You can download the product from Steam directly, or use this cmd line to do so:

steamcmd +force_install_dir C:\MyInstallFolder +login anonymous +app_update 4019830 +quit

Next, simply run via Steam, or locate RSDragonwilds.exe in the dedicated server product folder and run it.

We advise to add the following launch options when running:

-log -NewConsole

so you get a console feedback telling you exactly what's happening on the server. To do so:

  1. go to Steam > RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dedicated Server.
  2. Right click and select Properties
  1. Set your launch option to -log -NewConsole

Ensuring versions match

If you cannot see your Dedicated Server any more, use the logs to ensure that the version it runs matches the one your game does.

This is likely to happen any time an update or hotfix is released.

You can find the version your Dedicated Server runs at the top of its logs.

You can find the version your client runs in the top left corner.

Hosting in the cloud

We're working with Cloud server providers to get accurate documentation and details - we'll be linking them here once we have them.

Configuration values

Dedicated Servers require several values to be set before they can function properly.

Changing those values while the server is running will result in those changes being lost.

Linux configuration values can be found under:

Files > RSDragonwilds > Saved > Config > Linux > DedicatedServer.ini

Windows configuration values will need to be copied from linux and created in:

Files > RSDragonwilds > Saved > Config > WindowsServer > DedicatedServer.ini

Mandatory configuration values are:

  • Owner ID: this is your RuneScape: Dragonwilds Player ID. It can be found in game at the bottom of the Settings Menu. Don't hesitate to use the copy button to add it to your clipboard. The server will not start without your owner ID.
  • Server Name: the name of your server, no matter what world it may run.
  • Default World Name: upon startup, your Dedicated Server will create a default world. This configuration value allows you to decide how you want it to be named.
  • Admin password: anyone who knows this password can enter the Server Management tab in the Pause Menu > Settings menu. They will be considered as Admins until the Admin Password is changed again. You can see the list of people who have used the Admin Password to enter the Server Management screen by going to Files > RSDragonwilds > Saved > Config > Linux > DedicatedServer.ini.

Optional configuration values are:

  • world password: will supersede any password stored in the world. Can be left empty if you want anyone to be able to join your world.

Finding My Dedicated Server

It's time to play! To find your dedicated server, go to the Public tab of the Worlds screen:

Then in the search tab, enter your exact World name, case sensitive.

After a few seconds, your server should appear.

If you cannot find your server:

  • please make sure your server and clients use the latest version of the game available. Shockbyte servers just need to restart to update automatically!
  • please make sure that the world name you searched is the one your server is currently running.
  • please make sure the mandatory config variables have been set.
  • finally, look at the log - it should tell you how your server is doing.

Once you have found your dedicated server, just join and enjoy!

World management

When a Dedicated Server starts, it loads the latest .sav file available in RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames. If the folder doesn't contain a .sav file, the dedicated server will create a default Standard world with the default config.ini values applied.

How to: move a world to my dedicated server

  1. Ensure your Dedicated Server is stopped.
  2. Back up every file from RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames to a safe location (on the dedicated server drive, your own drive or the cloud).
  3. Empty RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames
  4. Copy your local world .sav file from your hard drive: C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGames to your dedicated server hard drive: RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames.
  5. Start the server. Done!

How to: create a new world with custom settings

  1. Run your local RuneScape: Dragonwilds via Steam.
  2. Create a new world with all the custom settings you need (Standard, Custom, Creative, etc).
  3. Enter the world.
  4. Exit the world.
  5. Back up every file from RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames to a safe location (on the dedicated server drive, your own drive or the cloud).
  6. Empty RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames
  7. Copy your local world .sav file from your hard drive: C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGames to your dedicated server hard drive: RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames.
  8. Start the server. Done!

How to: back up saves

  1. Go to RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames
  2. Copy any world save you want to back up elsewhere on the Dedicated Server drive, on your personal computer or in the cloud.
  3. You can rename the files to include the backup save in their names to makes things simpler.

User management

Dedicated Servers divides users in three categories:

  • Owner, the person whose Player ID matches the Owner ID set in config.
  • Admin, whoever entered the admin password successfully when entering the Server Management page.
  • regular users.

Owners can Ban and Unban anyone, offline or online.

Admins can Ban regular regular users who are online. Admins cannot Unban.

Logging

Logs can be found in:

.../RSDragonwilds/Saved/Logs/RSDragonwilds.log

Logs are an excellent tool to understand what is happening with your server.

Known issues

  • Inviting a player to your Dedicated Server via Steam Invites doesn't currently connect as intended.
  • Changing dedicatedserver.ini values while the server is running will result in those changes being lost.

I’m excited about this and I’m not even gonna host a server!

3

u/Freshndecay Mar 30 '26

Same lol even though I've never joined anyone else's public game

11

u/moose1425612 Mar 30 '26

I suppose I could wait one day for my answer, but what will the Shockbyte pricing be?

1

u/Observant- Mar 31 '26

$30 CAD/mo for a 4 person server LOL

2

u/moose1425612 Mar 31 '26

Yea oof, I just sent up my own for the low low cost of adding to my electric bill. Lol

login anonymous doesn't work for SteamCMD

ERROR! Failed to install app '4019830' (No subscription)

Actually it doesn't work even after logging in, and I can't find the "the free product "RuneScape: Dragonwilds - Dedicated Servers" on Steam" ...guess it's not live yet

3

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

It will work tomorrow.

2

u/gonenutsbrb Mar 31 '26

Any updates on this? It's 1PM PST and the steam page for it is live, but still unable to actually download it.

1

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

it's available via SteamCmd but we're still addressing some issues in the Steam Store.

1

u/gonenutsbrb Mar 31 '26

All good. Got it working with steamcmd, just figuring out now how to get this working inside a docker container.

1

u/indifferentbroccoli Apr 01 '26

If you're still struggling, we've got a public docker image working: https://github.com/indifferentbroccoli/runescape-dragonwilds-server-docker

If you run into any issues, let us know

1

u/gonenutsbrb Apr 01 '26

Will do, I finally got it running with a custom bash script on the SteamCMD container. Simple enough, but I'll probably migrate to your container later lol.

Do you know how the server discovery mechanism works with port 7777? We have some other game servers running using those ports, and I can specify ports in those apps, but I'd love to have the games just be able to iterate up ports (e.g. 7778, 7779) from there as RSDW mentions, but I'm assuming that only occurs if it finds the right kind of game server on 7777 first?

1

u/youRFate Mar 31 '26

Can you just host the binaries somewhere public, until you get steam sorted tomorrow?

1

u/Sayntz_ Mar 31 '26

The server run only in x86 or have ARM support too?

3

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

We do not plan on supporting ARM yet, we tried it and it's not that straightforward for this game.

1

u/Wooden_Profession539 May 26 '26

Please provide ARM support, I think hosting on Mac mini / ARM VPS is a best/normal option for those have homelab and genral gaming server hoster.

1

u/reefine Mar 31 '26

What is with the preferential treatment of dedicated servers? What need is there to have a preferred server provider? Sharkbyte has horrible reviews

1

u/dvlp_r Mar 31 '26

I was just able to successfully download the dedicated server app to my local server

3

u/MiddleBodyInjury Mar 30 '26

Great writeup can't wait to give it a go

3

u/mouseymars Mar 30 '26

Other providers can host it too. We plan on having them up and running in the morning when it releases.

1

u/mouseymars Mar 31 '26

We've got them up on the logicservers site now

2

u/Mediocre-Ability-379 Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

Does anyone know if connecting directly to an IP is supported, instead of searching the public list? I’d prefer to host within a private network and not expose to the public internet.

1

u/elcapitaine Mar 31 '26

Doesn't seem like it, I don't see an option in game. Would be nice

1

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

We do not offer this option at the moment.

1

u/NeilHanlon Mar 31 '26

Would be really great if this were an option.

1

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

It's in the backlog. The challenge is that we can either make it nice but it's quite a bit of work, or make it rough but then it's not user friendly!

1

u/Mediocre-Ability-379 Apr 01 '26

Understandable, I have seen this play out in my day job many a time where UX was pushed into the backlog when a command-line option was passable 😔

On the other hand, I imagine the set of users who really want/need direct IP connections don’t mind dealing with a barebones interface.

1

u/Helmic Jun 10 '26

I see that direct connection via IP is currently supported, which is great. However, in order to make things easier for my friends who are less techy, I would like the ability to tell them to connect to dragonwilds.mysecretwebsite.com which I already have set up as a reverse proxy to port 7777. But the game's interface will only accept a raw IP address, which is very annoying.

Would it be possible to have support for domains?

2

u/Zygersaf Mar 31 '26

Nice guide thanks! Personally I plan on self hosting but inviting my friends to my Tailscale network instead of opening ports to the internet directly.

1

u/majormoron747 Apr 04 '26

Did this work out for you? I have LTE based internet and apparently I have a CGNAT problem and Tailscale might fix that?

1

u/Zygersaf Apr 04 '26

I haven’t tried it yet sorry.

1

u/Zygersaf Apr 13 '26

Finally got around to it, seems to work fine with Tailscale. I’m using the indifferentbrocoli docker container and a Tailscale container on the host. My friends just have to search the name of the server, click the box for custom Ip then enter the Tailscale ip address of the host.

1

u/majormoron747 Apr 13 '26

I appreciate the follow up, you're a G. Yeah, I figured it out too, I'm using a steam CMD install and playit.gg to make the tunnel. Good to know still tho as a backup option.

2

u/FriskyJews Mar 31 '26

would be amazing if someone wrote a guide and a docker to just install it on unraid/casaOS

1

u/Peter_Files Mar 31 '26

until they release the dedicated server in steam, i doubt that will happen

1

u/ppetro08 Apr 04 '26

I wrote this up last night, didn't get to test it a ton but I was able to connect to the server and seemed to run fine. Planning to test it with others tonight.

The readme should have all the info you need to get it running on unraid. Its based off of ich777/steam-cmd that I've used for other games like satisfactory.

https://github.com/ppetro08/dragonwilds

1

u/Cloudraa Apr 06 '26

I'll be your beta tester lol, my buddy wants a server

1

u/ppetro08 Apr 06 '26

I was actually able to test it out 2 nights ago and the dragonwilds server ran great. Only thing I had an issue with was the start-server script was erroring with 0x6 code when trying to update the game files.

I didnt have time to debug it since we were trying to play so I just ended up copying the Saved folder and nuking the entire rsdw folder starting it up again and copying the saved folder back in

1

u/Cloudraa Apr 06 '26

I don't actually have the game so we'll see how this goes

1

u/ppetro08 Apr 06 '26

I haven't used it but I believe you should be able to check if your server is visible to others with this site without needing the game. https://shrug.games/games/runescape-dragonwilds/servers/

1

u/Cloudraa Apr 06 '26

Oh thanks for this! helpful for testing

1

u/Cloudraa Apr 06 '26

Any recommendations on what to use as owner ID since I don't have an account? Just one of my players I guess?

1

u/ppetro08 Apr 06 '26

That i don't know. You could get someone's id who is planning on playing on the server.

I also don't know if it's necessarily required or not. You could always ask in their discord channel dedicated-server-discussion

1

u/Cloudraa Apr 06 '26

All good.. I'll use my friend's id since it's for him anyway

the docs say the server won't start without it haha

1

u/ppetro08 Apr 07 '26

Im curious, were able to get the server up and running?

2

u/coletenmcguire Mar 31 '26

So we're saying a dedicated server we host on our own machine via the steam binaries is "hard?" And does not have automatic backup?

2

u/main1000 Mar 31 '26

ERROR! Failed to install app '4019830' (No subscription)

I thought today was the release date for dedicated servers?

2

u/crpeterson14 Mar 31 '26

I thought so too. It's perplexing they release the article on dedicated servers. Then say it will be available tomorrow. If you scroll up there is a MOD that talks on this.

4

u/main1000 Mar 31 '26

Definitely not giving priority to the preferred hosting providers ;)

2

u/Hefty_Victory_3041 Mar 31 '26

I do see the dedicated server files on the Steam Store now but it says not available in my local language so can't add it to library.

2

u/klousGT Apr 03 '26

No matter what I do, the game doesn't appear in the Worlds list. I've set the port to 42424 and have that port forwarded to the gameserver.

2

u/Pherozia1 Apr 04 '26

Just moved my world over to my dedicated server, played all good no dramas friends could join. Played for about 5 hours made some good progress.

Stop the server. the world .sav file didnt update? it reverted back to when i first created it? how in the fk do you save the world because we just wasted 5 hours LMAO

2

u/JagexDoom Jagex Moderator - Community Manager Apr 04 '26

Copying this from our earlier announcements in case it impacts you or could help!

When copying an existing world save to your Dedicated Server, DO NOT CHANGE THE FILE NAME.

If you have already done this, either copy the world save file with the unedited name, or rename the world save file BACK to its original name.

Verify that the server is saving the world correctly by checking that character progress is maintained when leaving and rejoining the server, and that restarting the server keeps buildings and objects. The server will need to be restarted. If the server was started with an edited filename, progress will be lost.

We're aiming to deploy a full fix next week!

1

u/Pherozia1 Apr 04 '26

Ah yep that did it. Cheers!

2

u/sirachillies Jul 25 '26

This is a decent write up. I have acouple of questions about putting a public proxy in front of my dedicated server.

I have used in the past playit.gg to essentially host the public end of my server without having to port forward on my own internal network. Will there be a way to be able to scroll through the list of servers and select a server with essentially a proxy in front of the dedicated server so i dont have to expose my server on my network?

currently the only way for players to join my server is using a specific ip address and port number.

and when reconnecting you have to use the same thing again

1

u/Mautaznesh Mar 30 '26

Still deciding between Shockbyte and running my own on my mini PC. I appreciate the write up! Depending on pricing, Ill decide tomorrow. Very excited for the new update!

1

u/khurune Mar 30 '26

Is there no way to set the port manually? Can we not use the port= command line?

2

u/JagexCyphus Jagex Moderator - Principal Engineer Mar 30 '26

You can use -port=<port> and -multihome=<ip> as standard with Unreal Engine based servers

3

u/on-ur-syx Mar 30 '26

I have searched for "RuneScape: Dragonwilds - Dedicated Servers" on steam but there is no products listed. Is this available now?

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

It will be available tomorrow.

1

u/GunmanOfRuin Apr 01 '26

thanks a ton this is exactly what i was after :)

1

u/Adventurous_Zebra212 Mar 30 '26

Cannot wait until tomorrow night after work :) just wondering will I be able to get a server from nitrado ?

1

u/endmysufferingxX Mar 30 '26

I'm just waiting for someone to build an unraid container for this.

2

Great guide for the community, not many developers would detail the process, let alone with three different methods

1

u/Genetic17 Mar 30 '26

2 questions.

  1. Any pricing information available ahead of tomorrow?
  2. I remember reading about the desire to have a docker image available for server hosting. Is this going to be provided tomorrow, or further down the line?

1

u/JagexIceCream Jagex Moderator - Technical Director Mar 31 '26

It will be provided sometimes this week. We need the product to be available to everyone to conduct final tests.

1

u/youRFate Mar 31 '26

Really bad look that some paid partner providers have working servers, while the rest doesn't. This could be seen as you funnelling people to your partner providers ...

1

u/indifferentbroccoli Apr 01 '26

We're not affiliated with the RSDW developers, but we've got a working docker image: https://github.com/indifferentbroccoli/runescape-dragonwilds-server-docker

Open to feedback if you run into any issues using it

1

u/Martijn987 Mar 31 '26

Could someone maybe explain the following to me? I have a pc that runs on windows. So how would I suppose to copie it from linux when I don’t have linux on my pc?

Windows configuration values will need to be copied from linux and created in:

Files > RSDragonwilds > Saved > Config > WindowsServer > DedicatedServer.ini

1

u/elcapitaine Mar 31 '26

I'm sure someone will post the default config once it goes live

1

u/Master_Zeal Mar 31 '26

im using shockbyte and i want to make my server a pvp hard mode. is this possible?

2

u/Then-Operation7341 Mar 31 '26

there are other providers for cheaper fyi

1

u/HeavyTaste4651 Mar 31 '26

So… I might just be stupid but I’ve followed all the steps tried steam and shock yet but my server won’t appear when I type in the name. Any advice?

1

u/Levanes Apr 08 '26

Yeah, same here. It's not very clear on what the ports are. Like "The second server will use 7778 and so on" -- What does that even mean...

1

u/Eastern_Air1833 25d ago

You only need to open 7778 if you're adding a second dedicated server. First server utilizes Port 7777.

Make sure your Port Forward configuration is correct on your router to allow UDP WAN traffic on Port 7777 to your destination device. Also, double check your DedicatedServer.ini and make sure your ownerID value is correct.

1

u/gonenutsbrb Mar 31 '26

Whenever a player tries to connect, the game waits for about 10 seconds and then kicks them to the main menu. Am I missing something?

1

u/CzRSpecV Apr 01 '26

I believe this has to do with the issue of if the server is on the network of the connecting player, it wont let you connect to it. Which I don't really know how that got through but...

1

u/Superpansy Apr 01 '26

it looks like the ServerName field in the .ini is mapping to the 'created by' column on the world search list. And then the 'world name' column is the literal world name of the save file. Seems like this is backwards. shouldn't we be searching for the server name to find our server and allowed to change the actual save file under the hood freely without our players losing access because the name changed.

Also I'm having trouble joining my own dedicated server on my own machine. I can find my world, enter password, select character. But when i click "Enter World" nothing happens, the ui is still accessible and about 30 seconds later it sends me back to the main menu

1

u/Dastion Apr 01 '26

Did you ever figure this out? I was having the same issue last night. Tried again today after making sure ports were open and it won't even show up

1

u/Superpansy Apr 01 '26

No I'm just going to wait for an update

1

u/Dastion Apr 01 '26

I just finally got it to work after forwarding my ports and figuring out how to update the dedicated server app via SteamCMD. I havent gotten any of my friends to try logging in yet though.

1

u/Superpansy Apr 02 '26

Seems like you got further than I did. If you can provide any guidance for what you did I'll drop trade you max cash and a party hat if you bring your entire cash stack to lvl 69 wildy and headbang 3 times

1

u/Dastion Apr 03 '26

I don't understand any of that last part but I'll help regardless, sorry for the delay.

The only real big things I did the second day were:

  1. Log in to my router and ensure ports 7777 were forwarded for the laptop I'm running the game on.
  2. Re-run the SteamCMD to update the app. Be sure to run it with the -log -NewConsole arguments so that you get the console window that has the BuildID in the bottom right. As of right now it should be 189055.

If you're not running it via SteamCMD then #1 might just be your issue, but today I finally figured out that the commands the guide tells you to run assume you're already familiar with this sort of thing and you know how to run that command inside command prompt (windows). I'd assumed it was to be ran inside SteamCMD.

Happy to clarify steps for any of that - I even wrote a batch file that will validate the dedicated server version and then launch the server. But odds are if you can get the server up then your issue is just port forwarding and updating the game.

1

u/Dastion Apr 03 '26

Oh and double-check your .ini file. Mine keeps getting reset by updates

1

u/iverke Apr 03 '26

I just changed the ini file to read only. No issues since. Might be worthwhile to change.

1

u/Dastion Apr 03 '26

Ah good idea! I just had a back-up of it, I should have thought of that.

1

u/AdComfortable3388 Apr 01 '26

For anyone interested, I managed to get a server working using this docker-compose file.

Any idea why it would crash on boot?

I’m not sure but I was also getting random errors after they pushed an update to the dedicated server. I switched over to using the container from indifferent broccoli and it seems to be working well now.

Sadly I get the exact same error with this docker, thanks for the help tho!

EDIT: I'm running Proxmox, apparently the CPU wasn't put to "host" setting in my VM running this docker. Problem solved!

Why a docker container within a VM? Why not just use an LXC?

how do i change the difficulty of my shockbyte dedicated server?

"Ports

Dedicated Servers use ports starting with 7777 by default. The second server will use 7778 and so on. You must ensure that the port(s) can be reached directly. This means your Firewall, Router(s) and ISP must forward those ports for UDP. "

So how do I actually change the port? 7777 is a common unreal engine port and I already have stuff behind that.

I had some spare time last evening and documented what worked for me on a Debian Server. You will still need to think a bit yourself. Skerlord/Runescape-Dragonwilds-DebianSetup

What happens if I shut down a server and dont hit save or backup before I do on the dedicated server and launch a different one ? does that make me lose the world ?

One tip everyone. If you can't find your server name, please check how long the name you have set in your .ini file is.

Try and find this in your server logs.

SlotName truncated to fit max length was[<THE NAME YOU INPUTTED IN THE .INI FILE>] now[<A SHORTENED VERSION, USE THIS VALUE>]

you may need to use the now[] value

me and my mates just finished our playthrough and we want to each have a save of the world. were using the shockbyte service. so we have got the .sav and the backup aswell and put them into our local save files. but whenever we go to start them up we cant we get stuck on the enter world button in select character. we can press it but it does nothing. i cant change any of the server settings either. i change them and they just reset. have i done something wrong.

If I host a dedicated server on a separate pc is it going to make steam force me to log in everytime? I had that issue with palworld and it would shut my server down if I launched another game on my main pc.

Request for ARM server, it is fine to use QEMU emulator or box64 to host on Ubuntu ARM. But we need a ARM native to host. I think most of us got macMini at home. Thanks

Hello. I did host server yesterday to try it out. I have to questions about it. 1. After adding my private world, server vanished from public list. We can still join it through recent server or code, but is hard if noone is on server to provide it. It may be problem with world name as it contain space in it. 2. Is there a way to see time on server console? Like when someone joined or left server to keep track of activity Many thanks in advance

Hey, I'm trying to add an adminpassword to my selfhosting dedicated server but whenever I start the server, the AdminPassword line gets deleted. Has anyone faced this issue before, any fixes?

Anyone have an issue when it won’t let you play the game while the server is running?
