Did any other 1996 Scream fans like the 3rd attempt to copy Scream, "Valentine" when it was new?

I never hear it talked about.

Discussion Is Samantha Carpenter in Scream 5 and 6 more of an antiheroine than a traditional final girl?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I've been thinking about how different Sam Carpenter is compared to Sidney Prescott and Emma Duval.

In Scream VI, Sam admits to her therapist that she enjoyed killing Richie at the end of Scream (2022). She doesn't just kill to survive. There's a part of her that actually enjoys the violence, which is something she struggles with throughout both 5 and 6.

Sidney and Emma (MTV Scream) are traditional final girls who are haunted by the murders they've survived. Sam is different because she's not only traumatized by what happened but also afraid of how much she's like her father, Billy Loomis.

She still protects the people she loves and isn't a villain, but her relationship with violence makes her feel more like an antiheroine than a typical final girl.

Would Sam be better classified as an antiheroine, or is she still a traditional final girl despite enjoying killing her attackers?

Discussion Why was this random guy so unimpressed with Gale Weathers during her lecture in Scream 3?

Post image
30 Upvotes

I know this scene was basically just an excuse to give David Arquette's brother Richmond a cameo, but I've always found it so random.

Gale is giving a lecture about journalism and this guy just randomly decides to challenge her like he has some personal problem with her.

What's funny to me is that Gale isn't just some random reporter. By this point, she's a successful author who helped solve two murder sprees, so you'd think someone attending her lecture would actually be interested in what she has to say.

I know Gale wasn't exactly the most ethical journalist, especially in the first two movies, so maybe he just didn't respect her or thought she was exploiting the murders for fame.

It's such a small scene, but every time I rewatch Scream 3, I wonder why this man was so bothered by her.

I have never liked these posters honestly. The first four movies had much better ones. I do like that they show off the suspect list though.

Its really funny how bad the Scream 7 roster is. I didn't realise the teacher and reporter were meant to be suspects until I saw them on the poster afterwards. 😂

Discussion The original trilogy was the golden age.

Post image
84 Upvotes

When the horror genre was on its knees only having glimmers of gold throughout the 90s, Scream resurrected the genre slasher films. Scream was in its heights with those three films, the franchise wasn’t yet milked enough by the studios. The franchise had a story to tell and ended quite soundly. Although Scream 3 is seen as the “mediocre” sequel it ended Sidney’s story very well. I adore Scream 4 but there’s no denying Scream Trilogy was the golden age of the franchise. It’s a shame what has happened to it.

Discussion “How easy it is to convince the world to believe the worst in people rather than the best”

Unfortunately that is very true. You ever notice how often people just automatically & are ready & willing to assume the worst in something or someone? How people just instantly believe in something that makes something or someone look terrible & how they don’t believe something that makes them look good? That’s especially true on social media. I’ve certainly noticed that & that’s why that line has stuck with me

Discussion Do you think Neve is returning to 8?

Post image
139 Upvotes

I might just be being overly pessimistic, but I have a strong feeling the main holdup with any Scream 8 news right now comes down to Neve and Spyglass.

I’m saying this with respect to Neve as a mega fan of hers because she deserves every single cent for both her talent and what she’s done for this franchise, but I could easily see her team leveraging Scream 7’a massive opening weekend as proof that she brings in the box office. She has the ultimate bargaining power now and her team is likely pushing for an extra $1M-$2M because of it. I'm currently stuck between two theories on how Spyglass is handling this:

  1. Spyglass knows that Neve single-handedly salvaged Scream 7 commercially, so they know they have no choice but to pay up and eat out of her palm.

  2. Gary Barber tries to cheap out again and he is reluctant to drop that kind of cash worrying about how 8 will perform after 7’s critical reception. They might try to offset a bigger paycheck for Neve by hiring a cheap, mid-tier director who won't ask for much. Or, if they decide to pull out all the stops to hire an A/B-list horror director to rebuild goodwill, they might try to lowball Neve again to balance the budget.

Discussion Any advice on how to restore this mask?

Bought this vintage scream 3 era T stamp from Vinted, which is unfortunately covered in these black marks and small orange dots.

I’ve spoken to a few people on Instagram who recommended using laundry detergent and water, then acetone, but neither have worked as I think the marks are embedded to deep.

Does anyone have any other recommendations or is this mask just done for?

Discussion Scream VI appreciation thread Spoiler

I know Scream VI gets a lot of criticism for its plot holes, especially the Ghostface reveals, the shrine and characters surviving ridiculous injuries. I'm not denying any of that, but most of those things are pretty easy for me to headcanon away and don't ruin my enjoyment of the movie.

I loved the New York setting, even if the movie didn't take full advantage of it. The bodega attack, the Core Four apartment attack, Gale's chase, the chase scene in the shrine and subway sequence are easily some of my favorite set pieces and sequences in the franchise.

And I have to give Roger L. Jackson his flowers because I genuinely think this is some of his best work as Ghostface. There's something so much more aggressive and vicious about his delivery in VI. He sounds genuinely angry at times, especially during the opening and Gale's phone call. After six movies, he still manages to make Ghostface sound terrifying instead of repetitive.

I also don't care if the shrine and all the references were nostalgia bait or fan service. I was just happy to see the sequels finally getting some recognition instead of another movie obsessing over Billy and Stu. There's so much more to Scream's history than the original, and I loved seeing Roman, Jill, Charlie, Mickey and Mrs. Loomis acknowledged.

I'm aware Kirby was a last-minute addition, but I honestly think her return feels natural if you don't know what happened behind the scenes. Her becoming an FBI agent investigating Ghostface-related cases makes sense considering what she survived in 2011.

Even the divisive Bailey family reveal works for me. I like the idea of a family seeking revenge for a previous Ghostface, especially as a reversal of Scream 2. And finally having three killers was fun.

My biggest criticism is that the movie plays things too safe with its survivors after making such a big deal about nobody being safe.

Overall, I think VI's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. It's entertaining, has some fantastic chase sequences and made me genuinely invested in Sam and Tara's future.

I just wish discussions about VI focused a little more on what it did well instead of constantly returning to the same plot holes.

Discussion Are we the most consumerist horror fanbase?

Post image
72 Upvotes

I feel like more than any other horror fandoms I am in this fandom is so eager and excited to purchase anything with a Ghostface tie in.

All day I see cans, bottles, toys, tchotchkes, decor, masks masks masks masks masks robes and it’s not because it’s spooky season it’s been years of this.

Always happy to follow a new purchase - the comments will be “where can I cop?” “On my way right freaking now” “oh you know I had to get immediately” “UGH can anyone ship to Canada?”

It feels completely genuine! It isn’t T shirt bots or stealth promo, it’s that we really love it and want to all collect.

I want to make it clear I’m not judging anyone at all - I have 2 masks, a big framed poster, 6 shirts, and Ghostface in DBD - hell I have the popcorn bucket!

But it’s just interesting to me that out if all the big business horror memorabilia is we celebrate it at what seems to be a much higher frequency.

Idk just something I’ve been kicking around in my head for a while.

See you at Stab-a-thon!

Discussion One interesting detail about the Scream series

Most slasher series have a recurring antagonist with new protagonists each time. Scream works exactly the other way around, with having the same group of protagonists facing off against new antagonists each time.

Discussion Anybody else miss the old Ghostface tags?

I’m probably not alone and feeling this, but personally, I prefer the old ghostface tags to the “modern“ ones that they’ve had since about scream 4. I just think the ones that they’ve had since scream 4 are so damn generic looking.

I actually have a mask that I bought from party city not long after scream 4 came out and it still had one of the old pre Scream 4 tags, but I lost the damn thing. Wish I could get another one. Shame really.

Anyway who else prefers the older tags over the modern ones.

Discussion *spoilers Scream 7: anyone else think this? Spoiler

Finally got to watch this on streaming today. I would've bet a gazillion dollars that there would have been a scene with Tatum 2.0 having a garage door triumph over the killer. I feel like it was hinted at a little bit with a couple scenes, but that obviously wasn't the case. It would've been great. There were already nods to the past films with the bf sneaking into the bedroom, the play, Stu's house, etc. Tatum, not feeling like she could be as strong as Sidney, could have had a fight with the killer that ultimately would have led to their demise by garage door and given Tatum a boost in confidence.

-They are made out of EVA Foam

-The Hooded Mask doesnt have any eye clothing, its a naked eye hole. (A real Human would probably use that in the dark)

- The hoodless peanut is designed for people that use Pullovers or Jackets, Black cloth eyes, no visible eyes at all.

Tell me what sucks about it, or what you may love lmao

From going to Nashville Comic Con and seeing all my favorite actors and voice actors, to finally meeting Skeet and Matthew (a little), to meeting Matthew at his free bottle signing at Total Wine and him remembering me from our 3 second interaction the day before. They are the kindest and sweetest celebrities ever, and I truly am so thankful to have met both and gotten advice as an actor and one that wants to do horror at that. I love Scream so much, and it will never stop being my comfort horror movie.
