I see a lot of people turn off read receipts because they want privacy or want to avoid the pressure of replying right away. But honestly, keeping them on and just waiting to open a message until you actually have the time and mental bandwidth to reply is a much cleaner way to handle communication.

Here is my take on it:

1. Plausible Deniability: When you keep read receipts on and leave a message unopened, no social contract has been broken yet. To the person texting, you are just busy or offline. A single or double grey checkmark saves them from overthinking because they just assume you haven't seen it.

2. The Limbo Problem: When people turn read receipts off, it creates a weird guessing game. The sender knows you are active and sees days go by, but they have no way of knowing if you actually read it or not. That gray area causes way more second-guessing and anxiety than a simple blue checkmark ever would.

3. Quality of Response: By waiting to open a message until you can actually engage with it, you avoid the trap of opening something, getting distracted, and leaving someone hanging for days. When I finally open a chat, I reply right away.

For me, if I know I cannot reply immediately, I simply do not open the notification or the app. It protects my time, keeps expectations clear, and avoids looking like I am intentionally ghosting someone.

Am I missing something here, or are people who turn read receipts off just avoiding basic accountability? How do you guys handle your chats?

Hello everyone,
I have been living abroad for the past 9 years and I am back in Dakar for a few months. During my time away from Senegal I benefitted a lot from friendly whatsapp groups to meet new people from all over the world, play sports, and socialize in general. I decided to create one for Dakar, where people from everywhere can get together and find their community, here's the link:

Is a visa on arrival still available at the airport in Dakar, or do I need to obtain one beforehand at an embassy? I am a citizen of Serbia.

I will maybe go to Dakar next year, I am studying Arabic and am very interested in pre colonial litterature, I am also very interested in scripts and languages in general

I would like to know if there are any libraries in Dakar that have books in Arabic (any subject) and books in ajami/wolofa (Wolof written in the arabic script)

thank you

Hello everyone,
I’m currently staying in Dakar in Mariates neighbourhood and will have a flight out of DSS at 9:20am. Is Yango reliable to order a ride to the airport at 4-4:30 am? Or should I arrange something in advance? Thanks!

Let's start from the beginning, I'm using a dating here in Dakar and I matched witch a beautiful lady that I really appreciated and we hit it off pretty well and now I am looking for said lady.

The question yall are asking is probably "well why don't you just ask her to meet up ?"

And the answer to that question would be... I would if I could because I CAN'T ANYMORE

The app name is Bumble and while I, as a certified idiot, was tinkering throught the settings I deactivated an option named "Mode Date" which was intriguing to me, a certified idiot, and upon deactivating this option a message appeared that I, a certified idiot, DIDN'T READ !

...The message said that deactivating this would delete all my matches and messages.

And sure I deactivated this **** and now the lady probably thinks I just deleted our match and I'm lost and empty.

I only know her first name not her last name and I can't find her anywhere.. She did say she only arrived in Senegal 3 months ago so I doubt her social media profiles are going to pop up to me.

Am I really screwed ? Is this the end for me ? Am I single forever ?

Edit : I'm adding the name that appeared on the profile just in case she uses reddit and maybe she stumbles uppon this post

Edit 2 : took out the name I've found her !!! created a new account and found her profile and I sent her a "compliment" which is like a direct message so now just waiting for her to see it

I really think these dresses are absolutely gorgeous and stunning 😍🥰 I want to order one and have it delivered to see how it would look on me. But I know nowadays people think dressing up in a culture that’s not your own is bad. Would it be okay for me to get one?

It is true that most of the electronic music scene in Dakar narrows down to Afro House, Afrobeat amapiano and commercial electronic. But at some point, some of us really wish there was something else, no? at least for those of us who are true ravers, we kind of miss it... If anyone here feels that this speaks to you, feel free to check this one out. Made with love by and for true rave lovers. https://de.ra.co/events/2555608

Hello guys, in the beginning of November, I'm traveling to Dakar for a couple of days and for the first time. I saw that luckily, the train station just opened 2 weeks ago.

I'll arrive late and sleep at a hotel near the airport, so on day 2 I'd like to get the first train from the airport to the city. On the last day, I need to be at the airport at 10am.

Couple of questions please:

1) Is the train station operational already? 2) What is the schedule?

Thank you!

can anyone reccomend any hostels or cheap accomodation in Saint Louis? can’t find anything online ! Thanks

I’ve always been fascinated by the strange things that sit at the edges of our understanding: the possibility of lives beyond the one we know, the mysteries of consciousness, the thin line between the seen and unseen, and the ways our ancestors understood a universe that still refuses to give up all its secrets.

These questions found their way into my 4th book and new collection of stories, The Moon Knows All the Secrets of the World, Rooted in magical realism and African cosmology, the book explores strange encounters, memory, grief, love, identity, and the possibility that reality is far more mysterious than our ordinary lives allow us to believe.

I’m drawn to the thought that we might be connected to one another, and to the universe itself, in ways we haven’t yet learned to understand. We arrive in this world with so many questions, inherit stories from those who came before us, and leave with mysteries still unresolved. Perhaps some stories help us sit a little longer with those questions instead of rushing to answer them.

The book is free on Amazon for the next 24 hours

If you decide to read it, I’d love to hear what you think. An honest review would also mean a great deal to me as an independent author.

Hey guys! This is a song out of the Senegalese rap scene I’ve been listening to recently, but I don’t speak Wolof or French, and the song appears to be a mixture of Wolof, French, and English. I really want to know what’s being said, but I can’t find any official lyrics and the only transcription I can find is on this tumblr post, but it’s incomplete: https://www.tumblr.com/dancehall-song-lyrics/705275087435317248/one-lyrical-tarkinda-lyrics

Could a Wolof/French speaker help me out on this one 😅

Hi everyone, does anyone know where this film is now available to watch online?

I tried MUBI and TV5Monde but seems neither are showing it anymore. Is there anywhere you know that this could be watched online? I prefer to pay for it but if there's only non-officially streaming way, I also wouldn't mind.

Just really want to watch it. Thank you so much!!

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m currently working as an Executive Assistant in the Tech industry here in the U.S and I’d love to connect with other EAs, especially in Senegal as a way to get closer to my country.

I’m thinking about starting an informal group where we can share best practices, exchange tips, discuss tech tools, and learn from each other's experiences. Whether you’re an experienced EA or a virtual assistant, all are welcome!

If you’d be interested in joining, please let me know.

Merci :)

Hello:)

I was wondering if most mosques stay open throughout the day - as in open in between prayer times from fajr to isha. thta you can just walk inside one on a whim say. and at night i assume most of them are closed as well... in egypt and morocco i hated that mosques were open only in prayer times...

Salut,

Merci.

I’ve received my yellow fever vaccine in Brazil in January 2025. I received a booklet with the details, but it’s in Portuguese and I did not receive the ICVP. I’ve been struggling to obtain the ICVP from the Brazilian government due to bureaucratic challenges. I’m wondering - if I fly to Senegal and attempt to overland to the Gambia, back to Senegal, then fly to Cabo Verde, could I be denied boarding, forced to pay a fine, or get revaccinated?

Looking to hear best solutions.

Bonjour r/Senegal ,
