I'm English so probably misinformed but this really doesn't look that difficult?

73

u/ViceIsVerses 1h ago

I’m Irish and I think I could get my child to do this

13

u/outcastreturns 54m ago

Yeah for $3 million (apparently), you would have thought they would give him a task that was a bit more difficult lol

43

u/robot_ankles 37m ago

For $3 million I'd kick my kid through those uprights

3

u/Less_Local_1727 16m ago

I’d do it for half that if we’re bidding

Joke, I’m sure your family are unkickably lovely

13

u/krazykieffer 1h ago

That's kind of the point, they give second chances a lot. If it's going to charity it doesn't matter if they make it or not. Kicking a football is not easy though for most.

31

u/Careful_Turnip_3197 1h ago

The guy organizing this is a former NFL punter and part of the reason he does it is to show how hard it actually is to kick a 33 yard field goal. The whole point is that it looks easy and college kids step up to fail miserably.

16

u/_TofuRious_ 57m ago

In Australian rules football even our under 16s kids can kick 30m goals, using a similar profile ball. I guess that's why we export so many punters to the US.

2

u/HugePast9455 39m ago

It is a fair point, but there's legitimate differences. In Aussie rules you're generally kicking from your hands, whereas an American field goal requires kicking a stationary ball off the ground to clear a 10-foot crossbar while staying between somewhat narrow uprights. That's a different technique, not a big matter of distance. There's obviously European football in the US and those players would agree with you that this isn't very impressive.

That said, the biggest difference is probably experience. Australian kids grow up kicking oval balls thousands of times, while many Americans have barely kicked one in favor of hand sports. A 33-yard field goal isn't particularly impressive for a trained kicker, but it's genuinely challenging for someone who's never practiced.

In the NFL the skill is being able to do it relaibly when there's a game on the line. I can hit a 3 point shot in basketball but not nearly every time and not when the pressure's on. For these kids, it's about the pressure of doing something you have zero practice in with the excitement of a crazy prize.

out of hand rather than off a tee

3

u/wotdafukwazdat 35m ago edited 30m ago

Rugby League and Rugby Union (in Australia, UK etc) all kick off a tee for conversions which are similar distances . So yes, 16 year olds are doing 30m conversions every weekend. Exactly the same as what is pictured here.

The longest successful (adult) kick recorded for Rugby Union is 70 yards at a quick google

https://sportqa.net/rugby/who-holds-the-record-for-the-longest-place-kick-in-international-rugby-union/

https://therugbyfactory.com/en/blogs-and-articles/longest-kicks-in-rugby

EDIT And for the League fans 55m or about 60 yards

https://forums.leagueunlimited.com/threads/longest-penalty-conversion.471622/

-1

u/Superficial-Idiot 36m ago

A tee makes it easier lmao.

4

u/tomtomtomo 28m ago

Says someone who has never kicked off a tee.

Punting is way easier.

Everyone in a rugby team can punt. Only a few can place kick.

2

u/Careful_Turnip_3197 27m ago

Not in the slightest

-2

u/QuietDisquiet 48m ago

Dude, I've never played football before I tried this with a football once and made a shot like this easily. I did play soccer until I was 16 though.

5

u/AcridNebula 1h ago

It looks incredibly easy. Nice work if you can get it.

12

u/NSE_TNF89 58m ago

If you've played soccer for a decent amount of your life, it's not difficult as you know how to kick a ball and the leg strength is there.

Where it gets difficult is in a game situation, as you have no time to think and massive dudes running at you.

4

u/IAmRules 49m ago

That guy plays soccer, he planted his feet perfectly like we do taking shots/free kicks. The fact he didn't need to go full strength tells me that wasn't far away.

1

u/TheMeIv 46m ago

I find soccer balls much easier and consistent to kick than American longballs.

1

u/NSE_TNF89 37m ago

They are for sure. It only takes a few kicks to figure it out though. My friends and I used to kick field goals after practice to see who could kick the furthest.

24

u/AlreadyFifty 1h ago

Being English, you should know better. I watch football all the time and I constantly see dudes booting the ball 50ft over an empty net and that’s with a perfectly round ball…

5

u/LiamPolygami 1h ago

https://youtu.be/gWdSuKfZEJQ Then there's Serge from Kasabian

1

u/Stampy77 2m ago

That doesn't account for the pressure of having to angle it over the keeper and the multiple defenders you have trying to stop you getting a clean shot off.

Rugby is pretty big in Europe. Penalties in that are very similar to American football and the ball is basically the same.

-7

u/omjagvarensked 1h ago

The net is much smaller than an NRL goal post though...

3

u/Fredwood 52m ago

no it isn't. Goal post is about 6ft narrower then a soccer goal.

0

u/omjagvarensked 29m ago

Lol buddy is talking about balls going OVER the net... Goal posts not only start HIGHER than nets, but they also end higher too

1

u/Fredwood 16m ago

There is no end. 33 yards is already a huff and it's already narrower and the ball is funky. His point wasn't about the size of the goal it was about the skill and power required when hitting the net is already incredibly difficult. You were just being pedantic and somewhat incorrect.

If it's so easy every dad in engerland would be in the NFL, they're not just giving out 3 million dollars to people for something that easy.

I am surprised more rugby or aussie rules football players aren't in the NFL, then again they're punting not place kicking so who knows.

7

u/thrilliam_19 47m ago

Kicking a football with accuracy is much harder than kicking a soccer ball (assuming that is what you are comparing it to). I played both sports and still can’t kick a football properly. Sending it through the uprights from this distance with zero practice is pretty tough.

The guy hosting is a former NFL punter and he does this to show braggadocious college kids how hard it actually is. They do this every week and they miss almost every time.

Also consider these are college students so they are probably drinking alcohol, and the pressure of being on national television in front of a crowd of thousands also adds to the difficulty.

2

u/SqouzeTheSqueeze 6m ago

Americans took our sports and made them simpler, because like everything they struggle with complicated tasks. This kick was a piece of piss and I’d do it with my weaker foot after 5 pints.

2

u/Timoth_Hutchinson 31m ago

We have rugby, it’s not that hard from this distance or angle

6

u/Correct-Land-2401 1h ago

You would not be able to make this shot.

3

u/FlyingSquirelOi 57m ago

Probably not but what’s the difficult bit? Is it your power or the accuracy of where you hit the ball? Is it a slim sweet spot and do most people hit it left or right? Genuinely wondering cause I don’t have a good frame of reference

4

u/Correct-Land-2401 53m ago

Yeah, you've got the idea. It's adding the power and elevation without having it go just directly up and down, and avoiding hooking it too much in the direction of your kick.

1

u/HugePast9455 38m ago

Sorry to paste my comment above but this might answer your question.

For these kids, it's about the pressure of doing something you have zero practice in with the excitement of a crazy prize.

-2

u/tomime000 49m ago

This ain't huge distance - for anybody who kicked this ball often enough in a lifetime can probably score this.

Give me 3 weeks and I'll get to consistency.

2

u/Correct-Land-2401 43m ago

Doubt. Also, original commenter was English, and I've seen them try to kick into targets before.

1

u/KeepItPositiveBrah 1h ago

We aren't a kicking culture but most HS level athletes could get close

1

u/PlaceAdHere 15m ago

Gets a bit harder when 11 big ass dudes are trying to rush you and put your face in the dirt. The pressure and need to do it quickly makes it more challenging.

There’s a reason why zero professional soccer players have ever become professional American football kickers

1

u/Fredwood 10m ago

Actually they do. Before a soccer player became a place kicker all the guys would line up straight behind the ball and kick with their toe, meaning unless you had a half a foot with a metal plate in the shoe you weren't legging out much more then 40 yards.

1

u/Macattack224 6m ago

I think you found the joke.

I don't know, I just like saying Gogolak

1

u/Honest_District_ 2m ago

I live in Germany, and while soccer is more prominent here, we’ve still played American football from time to time and it’s really not difficult.

1

u/TapeDeckSlick 16m ago

They prefer a challenge?

-1

u/Fetlocks_Glistening 40m ago

Americans have certain peculiar difficulties, not often talked about, in actually kicking a ball compared to other countries. So over there this is considered quite an achievement

When $3 million dollars to some kid who can kick a field goal…..

Let’s you think about how much money they have when a million bucks is chump change.

2

u/Horror_Petal 38m ago

The whole random American dream story is just PR to keep people voting against their own interests.

Charity is a scam that is on levels like private health insurance

13

Just kidding we ain’t paying it but here’s a coupon to get two dollars off for $20 hotdog at the stadium

4

u/Due_Marsupial_969 58m ago

This comment triggered a memory of what my rich commercial property landlord did. My buddy (a professional gardener) agreed to trim n mow the front of one of the rental properties at a discounted rate of $125 cuz he's friends with the sandwich shop owner there (i.e, one of the renters).

After the job, the landlord tried to pay him with a sandwich from the renter, saying the agreement never happened. My buddy walked. The landlord is also an attorney on a family of lawyers and doctors and they're the town's most famous law firm. $125 meant nothing to my landlord, but I guess eating that poor feels great. Fuckers.

2

u/anythingspossible45 50m ago

Yep, that sounds about right. I worked for billion dollar companies we hit 1 million in the 2nd qtr and would we got pizza party. From one of the chains they owned

1

u/ShotgunPayDay 16m ago

Worked for Little Caesar's and had an attorney call in about how their pizzas were done so poorly and needed them remade. It was a well dressed business person for sure, but unsure if they were actually who they said they were.

"Ok, bring in the pizza's and we'll remake them for you." - Me

"We are lawyers and our time is important. Remake and deliver the pizzas to us." - Bootyhole

"Sorry we don't deliver and only remake returned pizzas for QA" [People try to scam us all the time] - Me

"Then we want a refund for our time, gas, and pizzas" - Bootyhole

[Bootyhole hits speaker instead of mute and I get to hear them talking about how stupid and worthless we are and it'll be an easy refund; while clearly stuffing their mouths with food...]

"If you've eaten most of the pizza we can't refund it and I heard all of that". - Me

[Bootyhole hangs up]

Like why dude. We are happy to remake/refund your order, but why give us a hard time?

8

u/superkam41 1h ago

i think it's funny because the guy goes "sweeney's good for half" (of the million) and the announcer says "and sweeney.. will be putting in ANOTHER million dollar donation"

18

u/SanDisk_Made_Me_Rich 1h ago

Where the fuck is all this money coming from and how long that field goal is?

7

u/resinsuckle_the_2nd 1h ago

From someone who gets to write $3M off their taxes probably

1

u/Muted-Doctor8925 52m ago

Marketing budget with an insurance policy on the event similar to hole in one competitions at golf tourneys

3

u/thrilliam_19 43m ago

It’s a 33 yard field goal. Chip shot for a professional but surprisingly difficult for anyone else. They do this every week on College Game Day and they almost always fail miserably. Ball ends up in the crowd or rolling across the ground more often than not.

0

u/KeepItPositiveBrah 1h ago

I dont think they actually pay

25

That doesn't look that difficult.

4

u/Careful_Turnip_3197 1h ago

Part of the reason Pat Mcafee, a former NFL punter, does this is to show people it’s significantly harder to do than you think. 9 times out of ten a college kid like this will step up, think its easy, and fail miserably.!

4

u/iamnosuperman123 18m ago

Maybe it is a US thing. I feel there are teenagers who could do this in the UK (maybe a mix of football and rugby helps). This isn't too far outside the 22 directly in line. Not saying every could but for the prize money it should be harder

1

u/Physical-Exit-2899 11m ago

Yeah i think the pressure would be harder than the technical side for most people surely

1

u/Doomsday40 1h ago edited 53m ago

Even my mini groodle could do that somehow

8

Fun fact, BYU didn't stop punishing victims of rape until their accreditation was threatened.

4

The half court shot in basketball is definitely more difficult.

6

u/Adventurous-Way2824 1h ago

This is why prices are so high in America. It's become too easy for immoral morons to make fuck you money.

3

u/broccolee 1h ago

From the difficult level, must be zimbabwean dollars

1

u/Careful_Turnip_3197 59m ago

The whole reason Pat Mcafee does this is to show how much harder it is than you think. 9 times out of 10 someone’s steps up with this same mindset and fails miserably.

5

u/EstablishmentOld9838 54m ago

Most miserable comment section I've seen in my life oh my god. Good for this guy this was probably the best moment of his life

Lmfao it sounds like first billionaire was trying to say “he’s in for half,” like they’re going to each contribute $500k but the guy with the mic is just like, “another million! A total of $3M!” and they just rolled with it while the cameras were in their face

3

u/jimmypadkock 53m ago

Sorry, but where is the big skill?

1

u/H4ND5s 1h ago

Purely just advertising for "good" billionaires

2

33 yards…. So 100ft….
