๐ฟ๐ฆ News r/South_Africa just hit 80,000 weekly users and ~8,000 weekly contributors ๐ฟ๐ฆ
Another big milestone for a community that's only been active for about 9 months.
With the local elections looming less than a month away, we've seen a influx in political posts and some negativity, hopefully that would subside in a month once the elections come and go.
If you want a break away from politics or any negativity, checkout the new r/LekkerSA sub someone has made, for the lighter side of life. (Not run by anyone in our Mod-Team)
We're hoping to see a bit more positivity on r/South_Africa too, so if you've got some wholesome things or memes to share please do so.
As always, If there's anything we can do better or differently let us know, we as a Mod-Team are here to serve the users and follow the Mod-Handbook

๐ฌ Discussion Gambling in South Africa: Where to get help, And how to see it coming โ Megathread
Gambling has become a serious problem in South Africa, so the Mod Team wanted to put together one place where people can talk about it, get help, or help someone else.
Whether you're struggling yourself, worried about a friend or family member, or just want to understand why it's so easy to get caught, this thread is for you.
How it gets you
Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to lose their salary.
It usually starts small. R50 on a match you were going to watch anyway. A few spins while you're bored. A small win that makes you think, "Maybe I can do that again."
What gets people isn't a lack of intelligence. It's the design.
One of the biggest examples is the near miss. Two jackpot symbols line up, and the third lands just above or below the line. It feels like you were so close.
Your brain doesn't process that as a normal loss. It treats it as "almost winning", which makes you want to try one more time. That's not an accident -- it's a well-studied psychological effect that's deliberately built into many gambling products.
Then there's chasing losses.
"I've already lost R500. I just need one good win to get it back."
Most people who've developed a gambling problem can point to that exact thought. More often than not, it leads to losing even more.
Another common trap is believing you're "due" for a win because you've lost several times in a row. Every spin, every hand, and every bet is independent. The machine doesn't know you've had a bad run, and it isn't about to "pay you back."
The longer you play, the closer your results move toward the odds the game was designed to produce. And those odds are designed so the house wins over time.
Need help?
If you need help, or know someone who does:
- National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP)
- Phone: 0800 006 008 (Free, confidential, 24/7)
- SMS or WhatsApp HELP to 076 675 0710
- Free counselling and, where needed, free inpatient treatment and transport.
- South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF)
Self-exclusion
If gambling has become something you can't control, consider self-exclusion.
It's a voluntary process that can stop you from accessing licensed gambling venues and services. It isn't admitting defeat -- it's putting a barrier between yourself and the addiction while you get your footing back.
This thread
If you've been through gambling addiction, what helped you stop?
What do you wish someone had told you before it became a problem?
If you're comfortable sharing your story, it might be exactly what someone else needs to read today.
Please keep it respectful. People asking for help are often doing one of the hardest things they've ever done.

๐ฌ Discussion What Jobs Actually Give You Every Weekend Off?
For those of you who work at companies that are closed on weekends, what do you do for a living?
Iโve worked in quite a few different industries, but Iโve never had a job where the company closes on weekends and everyone gets Saturdays and Sundays off.
Honestly, it pains me having to work weekends when the rest of my family is off. I miss out on spending time with them, and Iโd really love to find a job where I can enjoy my weekends with my family for a change.
For those of you who have these jobs, do you find it makes a big difference to your work-life balance?

๐ฌ Discussion How do black South Africans think this country should create more jobs and grow the economy?
Black South Africans, what do you think we as citizens should do, and what should our government be doing to ensure there are more jobs and businesses to sufficiently grow the economy?
Where are the fault lines? Why is there still so much inequality and how can SA become the first African first world country?

๐ฌ Discussion What are some at home activities you and your SO do?
Hey everyone!
So, given the rise in fuel costs, and just generally how expensive it is going out nowadays๐ญ What are some things you do at home with your significant other? Aside from simply watching movies. Are there any creative games you guys may have made or hobbies you may have taken up that you do from the comfort of your home?
Thanks! :)

๐ฌ Discussion Am I an employee or independent contractor (legally)?
Hey everyone, so I just want to get some advice and perspective from people here before I actually go and seek legal help.
I started a commission job a couple months ago and I was under the impression Iโd be receiving a stipend for ~1 year but they explained things very weirdly and vaguely and essentially Iโm only getting paid for a month and then Iโll be fully on commission. Which fucks me because I have not ramped up yet to be able to support myself on commission only. Even when I received my first payment, it was 2 weeks late (which was not specified in the contract). After reviewing my contract it does say Iโll only be paid for 1 month but thereโs a whole bunch of stuff which is just not making sense to me comparing the interview and the actual job.
- I asked: โwhat are my working hours like, when would I have to be in the office?โ. To which they said there arenโt necessarily working hours. Now in practice, I have to be in the office Monday, Friday, and Wednesday. I have to be there for required meetings, company functions, and some days be there even when I donโt need to be. None of this is stipulated in the contract btw.
- my contract also says that I am not allowed to contact the CCMA (because Iโm an independent contractor) and if I do I have to pay penalties/damages
- Thereโs also a HUGE penalty for termination of the contract. If I leave or they fire me I have to pay training costs (which decrease after the second year then increase in the third year even though my main training is done within the first 8 weeks??)
- they subsidise medical aid, give corporate benefits, but thereโs no UIF/provident fund until after two years of working there
- Iโm in the office more than anything really, for e.g I worked like 40 hours last week.
So. Is this a sham contract and am I getting exploited, or am I cooked?

๐ฌ Discussion Carrim: what is your secret?
I need Suleiman Carrim's doctor to step forward, IMMEDIATELY! Not for the reason you think but because he is truly a way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper.
I mean Suleiman is more than a decade older than me AND at death's door but he looks better than I do. Not a workout or pamper day missed. Please get in touch with me. Also, what medical aid should I get? Is it Discovery's Classic Comprehensive or is it DOH (let's not ask if it's state-funded), I am a dot-connector.
Anyway, Suleiman, and all these other people, if you had just shared the money with us - we would have hidden you but unfortunately you gave unsecured loans to someone who already had.
