I will never EVER eat at any restaurant where the owner is so cheap and treats his or her employees so shitty that they won't pay them a decent, living wage and try to guilt trip me into compensating their bad business habits. Fuck them. I tip well when it is deserved but I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced into it.

The reason why they put up these signs is that if the server doesn’t make enough tips to meet that areas’ minimum wage requirements, they are legally required to make up the difference. They don’t give a shit about their employees, they just refuse to raise their prices to pay a minimum wage.
Best way to fuck them is to eat there and not tip

25% is insane. This is the one thing about American culture I hate the most. If you don't tip or tip less, you get frowned upon and/or shamed for it. Pay your damn servers instead of telling the customers to pay your employees' salary.

Why the fuck am I supposed to pay for the food AND then surprise also add your staff salary onto the same bill at the end? Just price things what they actually cost, and pay people what the job is worth. And oh if I feel so inclined to give someone a little extra for being awesome, that’s entirely between us and should not be part of the food cost or taxes whatsoever

Minimum wage is currently $26.44 an hour in Australia. Tipping still happens here but it’s not expected and is usually only when it’s a large table or service was particularly exceptional in my experience.

u/Complete-Tangelo1532 3d ago
Federal Minimum wage in the US is $7.25/hr. We haven't had a Minimum Wage increase in almost 20 years iirc, and back then it was only $5.15/hr
We also generally don't have good workers protections if you are in one of those minimum wage positions, some states have employee rights, and some barely have any at all
The whole system is made around keeping us dependent on their low pay, a fair chunk of us cannot afford to miss a single paycheck. Some cant afford to get sick and miss a single day of pay, and if we get sick it could cost you a year or more of income depending on the situations

That reminds me of that bit by comic Doug Stanhope. He says that stating America is the greatest country in the world is a kin to saying that America is the prettiest Denny’s waitress.
The United States is a wonderful country, but it seems like our political class are hell bent on ruining it. She has been going downhill since the 60s and has rapidly picked up the pace of its decline in recent decades.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

u/Apophistry 3d ago edited 3d ago
Apparently, you don't pay your staff at all, as you are adding your staff's salary to the customer's bill. So, you apparently expect your customers to foot the entire bill.
Also, seriously, 2-fucking-13 an hour? And you're posting that for all to see? And which you're evidently not even paying the staff? That's what's embarrassing. You should be both embarrassed and ashamed.
In closing, fuck you, fuck off and go fuck yourself. Thank you.

u/shotgunmoe 3d ago
Stuff like this is why I laugh when people say America is a first world country. It isn't. The only other country that shares a similar heavy tipping culture is Canada (shock).
Add stuff like the lack of proper heath care, homelessness, crime, etc. and it's pretty easy to read between the lines of what America actually is (it isn't first world either)

Signs like this are usually on businesses that quickly go out of business.
It's one thing to try and assert dignity for your employees, but there is no wage requirement to pay them a fraction of other employees and then insist the burden of running your business to the customer.
Honestly, people would be better off ensuring a no tip environment, paying staff a reasonable wage, and the people who are willing to work for normal wages (plus a little extra) and ensure that no tips are allowed for servers or anything else, actually enriches the environment of the workplace, and garners more long term respect in the community when you insist "I pay my people as best as I can, i don't make them fend for themselves on tips."
In japan for instance, if you try to tip someone, they get genuinely offended, as if they are so cheap and easy that they would be willing to work for an employer who wont pay them an honest wage. Tip someone in japan or in several other countries in the world and they look at you as if you see them like a bum on the street.

I don't go out to eat very often. I'm poor. I went to one place, paid a 25% tip before I was even served, and they didn't even bring us water. Also, $41.25 is a ridiculous amount of money IMO. A food server doesn't need to be making what a doctor does a hour.

The supreme irony is that the restaurant can legally pay its employees less than minimum wage because it expects customers to make up the difference, then shame and demean those same customers for not subsidizing its payroll. Imagine a business making its employees’ compensation the customer’s responsibility and then insulting potential customers for not cooperating. If your business model depends on customers voluntarily supplementing your employees’ wages, perhaps the problem isn’t the customers.
3
u/crsaxby 3d ago
This, exactly. The biggest scam corporate America (and other Westernized countries) ever pulled was this BS: Transferring the duty of the employer to provide decent living wages on to the consumer.
It's practices like this that make socialism look like a viable option. This. Infuriates. Me.

2
u/dbudzik 3d ago
Or you could, ya know, pay your employees a decent wage. Because they work damn hard. Kinda seems like paying them for their labor is the employer’s responsibility. If it’s so expensive, raise your prices and see how your restaurant does. If it goes out of business because you can’t afford to pay your employees, well, there you go.

u/Brokenspade1 3d ago
Add it to the price and pay them a living fucking wage. I know this is ragebait but there are plenty of business owners without the self awareness to understand that its not the customers job to pay the employee on the employers behalf.
And I'm saying that as somebody who worked for tips for most of his 20s. It's not a tip if it's forced like this it's extortion of your customers, by leveraging your underpaid workforce's "hard work", to avoid paying your employees.
It's literally guilting your customer base, to avoid raising your prices, and paying your employees.

I managed restaurants for over 20 years, I would applaud the sign if it addressed a mandatory gratuity but to double down on not paying servers a decent wage and expecting patrons to do it for them is wild. The lack of awareness is surely worth shaming the ownership. 2.13 isn’t mandatory nor is tipping.
