Tesla Roadster Would you choose this over a Ferrari
The Tesla Roadster ⚡🏎️
A glimpse of the future of electric performance cars.
Would you choose a Tesla Roadster or a Ferrari? And why?

u/TelephoneTag2123 1d ago
Very cool but I do not want to be inside that car.

u/burns_before_reading 1d ago
I don't know much about this other than the videos I've seen on Reddit, but I'm just assuming this version of the car will never actually be available to the general public with these features. I'll choose a Ferrari because they actually exist and are confirmed road legal.
35
u/Armaced 1d ago
I was looking at the Tesla site and it looks like there are three variants:
* one for the road (street legal, two seater, has the suction to keep it glued to the road)
* one for the race track (still a two seater but adds the jets in the back)
* one that is just for stunts on private property (one seater, adds the stabilizers that make it fly or jump or whatever you prefer to call that).
6
u/CactusSkies 1d ago
So the stunt car last night there was no human driver in it.
Did it have any fine print about people aren’t allowed to be in the cabin while it’s using those thrusters? My guess is as a stunt car no human will ever be in it when those things are operating.
And as I’m writing this as well, think about the G forces as it’s flipping around and stopping its flip like that. Too much of a liability to injure a human.

Definitionally it can fly. Jump would be an improper descriptor for what the car is doing.
7
u/DiscombobulatedBee0 1d ago
It won't be sustained flight. Those nozzles have a finite amount of highly pressurized gas.
System Specifications
- Storage Tanks: Two SpaceX-derived COPV tanks with a combined capacity of 600 liters (holding roughly 250 kg of compressed air). [1, 2]
- Nozzle Array: 10 active nozzles spread across the bodywork to manage multi-directional thrust vectoring (acceleration, braking, cornering, and mid-air stabilization). [1, 2]
- Refill Time: Using an external nitrogen station currently takes anywhere from two to six hours, though Tesla is targeting a track-side refill time of under 30 minutes. Standard on-board air compression takes longer due to the extreme pressures required. [1, 2]
6
u/Nota_ReAlperson New to the sub 1d ago
So the Rutan Voyager doesn't fly, because it has a limited fuel capacity and eventually has to land?
Edit: Jumping means that the time in the air is uncontrolled and unpowered. The car is both controlled and capable of sustaining its altitude for as long as it has compressed air. So it is flying, if only briefly.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Anthony12125 1d ago
Idk what you are trying to say. The car is FLYING and you are saying “it’s not sustained” and literally NOBODY is saying it is.

The flying car is currently invite only.
But anyone can reserve the one that can propel forward using the thrusters.

2
u/kaynpayn 1d ago
On the presentation, Musk stated this is a car that will be available to the public, general people will be able to buy it. Do with that info what you will though, he's been known to bend the truth before. But it is on official record.
Tesla or a Ferrari? Dumb question at this point. There's no point in comparing different products, one is an accomplish product the other is a (very cool) tech demo. Lets see the roadster being road legal, what the specs of the car actually are and what restrictions come with that first. Only then there's grounds to compare properly.

u/Eastern-Ad-6242 New to the sub 1d ago
There are 3 trims available for preorder. The base trim has the suction, but no thrusters. The thruster trim has rear thrusters for acceleration. The rocket trim has the extra thrusters for flight. However, the rocket trim is by invite only, so they’ll be very limited and only if you’re special enough for them to let you. Which makes a lot of sense. They don’t want just anyone idiot to have one. It’s dangerous in the hands of someone irresponsible.

Why can't people just revel in the totally absurd awesomeness of this? It isn't meant to be "real world" It's about imagination, thinking like a kid, and having the financial juggernaut and sheer engineering might to create something so nonsensical. What did we actually "get" out of going to the moon in 1969, from a purely practical standpoint? Billions and billions of dollars spent simply to spark the imagination of mankind...what a fools errand. Not.
•
u/cbalzer 23h ago
I acknowledge all of that. I am just sad knowing that we get no more useful cars. I have owned a model 3 for 6 years. I love it. Love. it. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and it’s not even close. I just wish they had kept going. A decent SUV, a van, a truck. A decade ahead of everyone, with a war chest to make electric mainstream and amazing. What could have been… I would pay through the nose for a truck that looked and drove like a Rivian with Tesla software and know how. It would have been far more epic than this. Is this tech amazing, yes. Still pales in comparison to the future I thought was coming.

It would have been nice if instead of the Cyberflop we got a Gen 2 Model 3 and Y at least in the pipeline. It’s insane the S and X didn’t even get a second generation and were cancelled. The reason their sales collapsed is because they were ancient AF. If they’d launched a Gen 2 with attractive styling, 10-80% charge in 15 mins, 400 miles minimum range and up to 500 miles for longest range models Tesla would have sold a ton of them.
I feel like this is the unfortunate outcome of having a part-time CEO who is more interested in buying elections and harming the overall EV industry.

Yes, and they also argue about "Oh you would laugh at the wright brothers too, I bet!"

Even without the thrusters, if I had Ferrari money, I'd buy the Tesla. It's sure to have insane performance numbers and it's all electric. There is no reason to buy a mechanical watch anymore, people still buy them for the experience and the beauty, even though they are worse at keeping time. Same goes here, tesla is casio, if you need a watch, there is a good chance casio is your best bet, and if you need a commuter tesla is the same. Casio could put the coolest gimmick in their watches and it’s never gonna be the biggest desire of an enthusiast.
If you ask me, get rid of the thrusters that are illegal on the road anyhow, put in 2 more seats and you made my dream daily, but if I have that kinda money I already have a gr yaris to rally, a 911 touring for track and mountain roads, and a bmw m2 for sliding about. I say this as a model 3 owner before I get called a tesla hater.

7
u/22marks 1d ago
Can it just "jump" or does it always have to spin? One would think spinning and stabilizing is harder? But I would've loved if it just jumped over all the cars and semi. Like, is there a physics reason the spin might be the only type of jump possible. It already proved it can right itself when it went up the ramp.
It can clearly take off and land perfectly horizontally. If it's not perfectly balanced, it should be able to use the thrusters to keep it that way, no?

u/Easy-Reserve7401 New to the sub 1d ago

I'd wager that doing something hard and pulling it off, shows technical prowess.

Watch the ramp jump. After the spin, it flies level for quite a while before landing.

This is about as real as the 600 mile roadster, the 520 mile Model S, the $39K Cybertruck, 1 million Robotaxis by 2020, appreciating assets, “never allowing FSD transfers” and a million other things.
I’m 99.99% sure that vehicle was made of out some sort of plastic and it was not packing any sort of real battery pack in it. They never showed the same car doing multiple things (ie. rapid acceleration and flying). There were always cuts between cars doing XYZ.
If any sort of thruster gets put into a production model I’ll be shocked. They have already said the “flying” one will never be sold to the public, nor street legal.
6
u/Lowviscosity New to the sub 1d ago
It’s a party trick. With the air tank capacity as it stands it would take only 5 seconds to empty it. And 2-6 hrs to fill it up…
I like tesla and have 2 - M3 / MY

u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 1d ago
I wouldn't want a Ferrari anyway, so I'd 100% pick the Tesla.

If someone was in a position to purchase a brand new Ferrari… they can also choose a Tesla Roadster. Both. Not one or the other.
Some enthusiasts/collectors have broad and eclectic tastes. Some have a very narrow focus. I know collectors that have a dozen Ferraris and nothing else. Others have a Ferrari and also a Citroen and a GT-R and a Trans Am. Different strokes for different folks.
The Tesla appeals to the Tech Bro that likely wasn’t a huge traditional car collector.

It's an experimental concept car. No one is going to own this except for maybe 3 people Elon personally sells it to and it will sit in a garage/hangar.

No! A Ferrari is a purpose built race car you can drive on the street ( most models ) or the track. This abomination is just a kit car built to preform a stunt and serves no other purpose. You’d have to be stupid to even get near this thing with that amount of pressure more or less actually drive it.
10
u/quantgorithm 1d ago
This is wrong. The entire point of the suction on the bottom and the dynamic spoiler and vents and even the rear thrusters is to be a superior racing car. This will easily smoke any Ferrari at what Ferrari wants to do best - race.

The McMurtry Spéirling will smoke this and already exists today, I watched the Hagerty walk through just now and there skirt system for active downforce is the whole bottom of the car (very inefficient) and skirts are disposable, McMurtry has a better system.
