Work Discussion Cop pulled me over in mail truckš¤.
I was going over the speed limit in the mail truck doing my usual Amazon Sunday and the cops decided to pull me over. Now Iām not sure what the rules are on that but I figured I would post here and see if anyone else has experienced this as I have never been pulled over in the 4 years Iāve been with the post office. He gave me a warning and told me to slow down and I said I would. But is this a common thing and what is everyone elseās opinions or insights on this?

I got an LLV to 55 on a highway and remembered why I don't take LLVs on the highway. I thought it was gonna rattle to pieces.
17
u/ChrisWolfling Jan 15 '23
I got one to 65 on the interstate, by pushing the pedal down to the floor. The wind blew both side mirrors back into the truck. Had to get out and readjust them...
3
u/icecubepal Jan 16 '23
A light fell off when I got it an LLV to go that fast. I told the supervisor when I got back and he said it's alright.
14
u/tingtong500 Jan 15 '23
The rattling is just it telling you itās going to go faster soon as it loses a few pounds here and there

u/dannyisyoda Jan 15 '23
The guy that did my LLV training once had to take one on the highway to bring to another station (they needed one with 2 seats for training). He said that he was able to get it to about 60, and even at that, it was shaking like crazy. After a few minutes, he felt something fall down from the ceiling of the truck, he looks down to see what hit him, it was a rivet that holds the ceiling up. Suddenly the rivets start raining down, and the whole ceiling collapses down on him. He ended up driving the rest of the way with one hand on the steering wheel, the other holding the ceiling up š¤£

u/WorktheMoo City Carrier Jan 15 '23
They'll leave you alone for partially blocking a street for a min to hop packages, for being in a handicap spot for the same thing/drop off business mail, or being double parked to deliver an apartment complex as long as you're not obstructing traffic.
But speeding, they will still enforce. No reason to speed and if something happens and it's revealed to be because of your speed, PO going to try to wash their hands of responsiblity.
10
u/Trippy4Mollz Jan 15 '23
Totally understandable today was just one of those days where I was extra heavy footed. But yea totally I get it and I know heās got a job to do as well no matter who or what entity I work for.

u/getterboi Jan 15 '23
Also your scanner will track your speed so management will have evidence against you. Just take your time, it takes what it takes and we're paid by the hour.

By mail truck do you mean the new Mercedes van or an LLV? Cuz Iām genuinely impressed if you made an LLV do a speed that warranted a cop saying āfuck it I guess Iāll stop the mail guy.ā
17
u/MailmanDan517 Jan 15 '23
My academy instructor (idk what theyāre called now, back in my day the first gen CCAs had to do orientation then academy then OTJ) told us heād gotten ticketed doing 55 in a 35, in an LLV, on the way back to his office because he was trying to make 8. To his credit, the point of the story was āalways take your time and donāt let mgmt intimidate youā
8
u/freeagent2120 Jan 15 '23
I bet the cop didnt know you were postal until he had you pulled over. The LLV and FFV are totally unique to us. The ProMasters and Mercedes can easily be mistaken for civilian vehicles. Either way. Follow traffic laws. Dont be in a hurry. You get paid by the hundreth (.01h) of an hour not by how fast you go. Get in an accident all that time you save them will result in free time for you sitting at home waiting for the result of the grievance pertaining to your removal.

u/Tangboy50000 City Carrier Jan 15 '23
Thereās going to be arguments both ways on this. You are supposed to follow local laws as mandated by the postmaster. Now technically the police do not have the authority to pull you over while youāre delivering mail, because they are obstructing or retarding the delivery of mail as outlined in 18 USC 1701, and there are zero exceptions in this law. Is anyone going to back you up, nope. I know Cleveland had a problem with carriers constantly being caught on red light cameras and the USPS basically told them to fuck off, because weāre immune from TORT.
14
u/Uninformed_Delivery City Carrier Jan 15 '23
We just got red light cameras in our area, and we've had several standups that amounted to "you will pay those tickets YOURSELVES."
Which sounded realistic at the time, but the more you think about it...it'll probably end up going like how you describe.
4
u/Trippy4Mollz Jan 15 '23
Yeah, I kind of figured that something was weird about that. Like yes I was speeding but like I said, Iāve never been pulled over before so itās good to know that thatās not something that happens all the time. That cop had to have been new or something because thatās just way out of character. And I guess Iāll just have to walk away with the warning and let that be that. I donāt think heās going to report it any higher up but of course that still makes me think that itās a possibility.
15
u/Stationary-Event City Carrier Jan 15 '23
Did the cop ask for proof of insurance and vehicle registration? š One year, somebody hit my LLV while I was on break. Luckily, a cop was driving by. I waved him down. He asked for the vehicle registration. When I tried to explain to him that the LLV number is the registration number, he still didn't get it. Rookie. He even left me a voicemail later on, saying he really needed the registration number.
20
u/americanjeepjew Jan 15 '23
There's supposed to be a paperwork packet in the truck that explains that crap. Of course, it was put in there when the LLV was new so it's probably in Latin

13
13
u/Past-Investigator917 Jan 15 '23
The answer is yes they can pull you over for speeding and yes they can ticket you. If you decide to inform management, they can issue discipline for failing to follow safety rules and regulations.
If this scenario ever happens to you, best thing to do is be polite to the officer, take your ticket, pay it, and keep it as a personal matter.

I got a parking ticket after management supplied me with an unmarked minivan and I parked in a no parking zone, that was only for a certain time during a specific day for street cleaning, for one swing without even thinking about it. Management said I had to pay it but the union president fought it and I got reimbursed because it was managements fault for giving me a rental van with no usps marking even though all the other rentals had usps magnets. But the union president was explaining how it was an unprecedented situation at first so he had to do some digging, because heās only ever had people get speeding tickets in postal vehicles, which the carrier is responsible for, because the carrier is the one who decided to speed, not management.
2
u/Trippy4Mollz Jan 15 '23
Oh wow thatās shitty Iām sorry to hear that š³
4

Meh. It was only a $30 ticket, and again I got reimbursed. I was a fresh CCA and didnāt know much. But I am, according to my union president, really good at having unprecedented issues š¤·š»āāļø
In all honesty though, Iāve learned a lot in the last 2.5 years, and would be totally screwed if it wasnāt for the union. I try to help CCAs and newly converted regulars as much as possible based on my experiences if I overhear anyone talking about any issues, because the last thing I want is for people to go through some of the stuff Iāve gone through, without becoming a steward, because that is definitely something I would not be good at.

That's nothing, I got pulled over because I didn't have a license plate.. I told the cop "I'm just assuming you're new" he then proceeded to get all butthurt and started threatening me so I told him " I'm pretty sure executive branch federal employee trump's local law enforcement".. he said for me to wait right there and went back to his patrol car for a couple of minutes (presumably to call for backup), walked back and handed me back my driver's license, apologized and told me to have a nice day

MiamiMan33111's Cop Guide:
(based on the fact Cops have no idea about the law during a traffic stop and frankly don't care)
- Do what the Cop says they are like your PM or Supervisor in the moment, follow orders and grieve later.
- If the Cop is hot tell them you are a fed and can help them get into the FBI/ATF/CIA over dinner and drinks.
- Profit.

It could have went on his/her record in that jurisdiction. I was a LEO years back and our written warnings were logged. I could check on my laptop a person's license # to see if/when they'd had warnings issued. This allowed us to see if people were fixing equipment issues and/or know if they were habitually breaking minor laws.
All that said, I've never heard of any of my friends stopping a mail truck, and by the posters own admission they were flying. My advice, slow tf down. It's nice to have a short day, but not worth the liability if you crash or get a ticket.
Government immunity likely wouldn't protect you, because you still have to drive with "due regard" and PO isn't going to back you because our policy and training clearly states we must follow all traffic laws. Those claiming the illegal stop thing are really stretching it and I'd say good luck with that.

I ran a red light in front of a police officer once, intentionally. The light was malfunctioning and the cars were sitting for about eight minutes. I decided to move into the lane that should go straight, stop, and when it was safe to do so I turned left. He pulled me over and knew the light was malfunctioning. He told me I should have called 911 to report the light. I didnāt argue with him and he let me go in my way without a ticket.
Iāll park in fire lanes if there isnāt a reasonable alternative. Iāll double park if I have to. I do not speed nor do I park in handicap spots. I stop at all stop signs. I stop at all stop lights, and only run them if theyāre very clearly not working.

That's not true even federal law enforcement can get traffic tickets. They can't look up vehicles in their system because they're not registered motor vehicles. But local PD can cite drivers for moving violations, DUI, distracted driving, etc. If they are messing with drivers for nonsense it presents an issue though. It's just another excuse to through carriers under the bus.

Normally, they leave us alone, even for parking violations.
Maybe you were really, really speeding?
I would just slow it down from now on, you ARE on the clock after all.
