It’s clear that ginormous squirrel’s sabotaging Brunhild’s marriage talks. I’m sure they’re looking out for the girl. They almost did it to Chilly too but he managed.

u/Frontier246 8d ago
I wonder what was up with that person that showed up tine the squirrel's eyes. It didn't seem to be Chilly...was it seeing someone else? Or maybe the soul of the squirrel itself?
But I think Chilly will win "Little" Squirrel over with his devotion.

u/AtheistTheConfessor 8d ago
Good catch. I assumed that was just a reflection and I didn't look too closely, but you're totally right. Maybe Little Squirrel is a person who was turned or is being controlled by someone else.
But I think Chilly will win "Little" Squirrel over with his devotion.
I almost wonder if he already has. Little Squirrel stopped the cold just before she grabbed his hands. Maybe it approves of him and is setting them up after driving away all the other suitors.

I'm just very entertained by the combination of seriousness and absurdity in this story. It feels like a fever dream and I kind of love it. We're getting the history and having flashbacks to traumatic childhood events, then we're freezing on a boat date. We're weighing a magical giant squirrel and developing a care plan for it, we're getting bullied, we're participating in court politics. And in the midst of all this, their names are starting to sound kind of normal to me lol
I do wonder how the show will juggle all of the storylines once the brothers go their separate ways.

I wasn’t sure about it at first because of the art style but it’s really growing on me. I like the goofy details.

The squirrel is sus.
Laughing at sword guy calling it out that the squirrel is way too big.
Chilly’s hair changes color when he feels warm. Seems like he might have some magical powers?

u/Frontier246 8d ago
Magic squirrels...temperature changing hair colors...seven brothers with distinct character traits/specialties...I feel like something fantastical is going on in this kingdom.
10
u/testthrowawayzz 8d ago
Oh certainly. I just thought at the end of the last episode maybe the knights could be normal but quirky characters.

Uh-oh. What happened there?
Yeah, that looks like how I’d expect their room to look like.
Chilly is 100% crushing on “Bruno”. Wonder what he’ll think when he finds out she’s actually the princess.
Swordsman is really invested in getting that squirrel to lose weight, huh?
Getting that close to the princess is “write that down” worthy?
7
u/Frontier246 8d ago
Congratulations Chilly! You've come the closest to "rescuing" a princess than all your brothers so far!

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 8d ago
That is one suspicious squirrel. It woke up and looked at Chilly, and suddenly he got a lot colder? I'm convinced it's who is sabotaging the princess's marriage talks.
Hungry may have found his wife this episode and fortunately for him I think she's a chef. At the very least she was promising to feed him and that's a good start.

In Latin, Barbara” (without the “i”) is the feminine form of “foreigner,”“barbarian” and “non-Greek.” And we learned that Baribara is a foreigner as she hails from the Country of Might. (Marronnier’s creator majored in ancient Greek and Roman history.)
Brunhild is of course the Norse shieldmaiden/Valkyrie and could also reference the queen Brunhilda.
Forgot to mention last week that Nemukunai means “not sleepy” and doesn’t imply that one can’t never sleep or doesn’t sleep at all. The translator probably wanted to keep the names to one word though “insomniac” has a different meaning.
The first half of the song the bard sang from the Country of Long Nights speaks of the warmth of a woman’s hand that a man clasps. This week we had some scandalous hand action with Samugariya and “Bruno.”

Does seem like it was a surprise for him that he dozed off at all.

Handholding so effective it stopped the magic wind trying to ruin the romantic mood.

I was actually confused when the chef talked about nobles like that in front of them. Cause if Baribara held such a high position, I thought she's also a noble and automatically her sons were also noble.
Turns out she's a foreigner and it all clicked together.

u/PinkGlitterLady4 8d ago
Since Insomnia comes from the latin word Insomnis, which also means sleepless but also unsleeping. The latter has three meanings like not sleeping, (figuratively) remaining constantly alert or remaining constantly active it is still fitting for this character.
The english translators really should have chosen the latin translations instead of english ones imo.

That's a helluva way to open an episode, was it a dream? Memories?
Chilly is down bad. Also I knew not to trust that overgrown rodent, with it's creepy little opposable hands. Never trust a squirrel with mysterious silhouettes in their eyes.
What in the schoolyard bullying was that? Ain't they grown men, and knights on top of that? That's crazy. At least Hungry's got someone whose sweet on him.

Who here agrees that a new pairing has appeared in this episode with Hungry and Colette?
10
u/Frontier246 8d ago
- ChillyxBrunhild
- Insomniac/Eleonore/Swordsman?
- HungryxColette
- FraternityxFree Love

I really love Colette's design for some reason. It's a plain face, obviously meant to look average/ugly, but combined with her personality it feels very refreshing. I'm rooting for Hungry x Colette too!

This show really has been giving off some classic fairy tale vibes. It's also feels kinda cozy too
I wonder if the vibes will change later on
So it looks like Princess Brunhild's squirrel is the culprit behind her marriage failures, thing's quite protective. But im also wanna know why Chilly's hair changed
This world's very mysterious !!

In that intro, I think you can find an implicit reference to almost every brother. The only one I'm not sure of is Insomniac (and Fraternity is there only in the opposite sense).
In my head that conversation with Fraternity would have gone:
"A margrave and a knight, eh why not?"
"But the margrave's a guy"
"Oh, right, otherwise it would be 'margravine'. Two guys, eh why not?"
"Although it kinda felt like there were some things missing that one time..."
"Two guys, but one of them's missing some things, eh why not?"
If Ellie's the only woman Swordsman can talk to then maybe...? Curious to see them interact next episode.
[EDIT] [18:15-20] Feverish got down from that window really fast.

u/Frontier246 8d ago
I definitely get the sense Swordsman is probably the brother Ellie vibes with the best compared to Insomniac.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 8d ago
I always thought the marriage is something that Ellie had agreed to (maybe I missed it in the first episode).
However, them clearly stating that Ellie didn't know about it yet, and now how she's being close to Swordsman might be some red flags that it's not going to happen smoothly
We don't know yet how Ellie feels about Insomniac

I honestly don't know what to think of this show. I like the artistic choices they are working with.
But, no idea where it is going or how fantastic the world is or when the people are leaving or anything.
Also, Nutria are from South America. They would have no idea what a Nutria is. But, okay, it's fine for the gag.
See ya next week.

u/Genoscythe_ 8d ago
Nutria are from South America. They would have no idea what a Nutria is.
Why not? This is a fantasy setting, the Marronnier Kingdom is just as allowed to have nutria as horses.
-1
u/NonSupportiveCup 8d ago
Anachronism damages the congruence of the setting.
It's not a big deal
4
u/bushwarblerssong 7d ago
The Marronnier characters could know of nutria through other kingdoms. Nutria could have even been brought to the kingdom. They were introduced to Europe for their fur at some point.
3
u/SouekiSennoSTM 5d ago
What anachronism? It's explicitly a high fantasy setting not set on Earth/our universe. South America doesn't even exist here. In this setting, nutria could be the most commonplace and national animal in and of their country or be from some frozen northern tundra, for all you (or any of us) know.

u/NonSupportiveCup 5d ago
Sure, but they choose a fantasy idealized version of medievil europe for their world. It comes with tropes built in.
Also, the creator seems to actually know about European myths and history. Character names (not the knights, of course) and their inclusions of things like the scale, small things about castle life. They had me in the frame of mind that the writer had a particular time in mind for their worldbuilding regardless of the fantasy elements.
Going against those assumptions puts the viewer in a strange limbo of expectations.
Qifrey could have summoned a gigantic capybara made of water to the fight the dragon in Witch Hat Atelier. It's possible. It's a fantasy world, so why not? Because it would have ruined the tone of the moment and show completely. It would have made everything insincere.
Personally, the more fantastic their world becomes, the less I feel invested in the knights pairing off romantically versus the plot point that they will be eventually leaving for their ambassadorships.
Anything is possible! Like teleportation or airships or Xianxia flight or whatever. Why get invested in that plot conflict when the writer can just do whatever to justify what they want?
That's why these things matter. I don't necessarily think their world building is going to go that fantastic, but so far, the show has been flirting with worldbuilding and it affects how I bond with those plot tensions.

People deviat from those tropes all the time. I don't get the big deal. Do you know the amount of medieval fantasy series where people have chocolate?

Agreed, genuinely got no idea where the story is going or what the stakes are gonna be, but still it's not boring though

I think it is a chill show that is taking its time to develop their characters. I'm enjoying that. it is nice to see a show that is no speeding at full cruise speed for plot development.

That squirrel is sus. I think that's what been sabotaging Brunhild's dates. Chilly was somehow able to withstand it though so I imagine he'll probably win the squirrel over and Brunhild will realize that her dates aren't sabotaged when he's around. That realization will probably prompt her to reveal herself as the princess. I'd funny if Chilly thinks he's gay first.
They keep telling us Insomniac is going to marry Eleonora, but I don't know. Something tells me that won't happen. Aside from whatever trauma that was at the beginning and his not sleeping he seem to be on the more normal sides of the brothers. He doesn't need Eleonora. He could find someone else in the kingdom he's going to whereas Eleonora is the only woman Swordsman can talk to. Plus she said she's not picky. If Swordsman gets a wife it's probably going to have to be her unless he can suddenly start talking to other women.
They also seem to be setting up a Hungry x Colette ship with him Collete recusing him from getting picked on.

Some nations did NOT benefit from the turbulent environmental changes of this nation. I guess that's why we have nations of such specific temperament and climates.
Young Insomniac, Ellie, and Anna-Marie! Less wholesome is Insomniac chancing upon seeing a bunch of people collapsed (and possibly dead?). The heck happened there!? Even MORE ominous...Insomniac actually dozed off! When he's supposed to never sleep!
Neat to see the brothers' sleeping arrangements and morning routine! Of course Insomniac doesn't sleep with them because he never sleeps!
Hungry must LOVE working with the cooks for all the free food.
Chilly is so naturally cold that being on fire doesn't phase him because it just warms him up, but nothing warms him up more than his feelings for "Lord Bruno," even if all the cooks don't think much of nobility. If only they knew they were talking about their princess.
"let's just hope we never get called into action" - You may have just jinxed everybody, Hungry.
Aw, Fraternity trying to give his bro relationship advice! He's also good at mentoring the young kids in the castle.
Does a margrave have the authority to throw a knight in a dungeon? I guess in their land, but I think Brunhild was assuming she'd use her own authority as princess there. Not that Chilly is any more aware of her identity as they go off to try and help teach Little Squirrel how to climb a tree!
Hmm...was Little Squirrel the one sabotaging all of Brunhild's marriage talks? For a second Little Squirrel opened his eyes and the sight of someone else appeared and then the wind took a turn for the worse. Not that it completely killed the romantic mood going on during Chilly and Brunhild's boat date, especially with the handholding.
Speaking of magic, Chilly's hair changes color!? I feel like that should be more commented on.
Swordsman just called his kingdoms' princess "stupid," though he meant well and just wanted to help make sure Little Squirrel stays fit!
So the brothers CAN stay in the kingdoms their being sent to if they so choose? I wonder if any of them will stay and never come back?
Nobody messes with Feverish' brother on his watch! And Colette the cook takes care of Hungry too.
Baribara hails from the Country of Might and there are nobles who don't want the kingdom monopolized by her authority or her children...but Insommiac knows how to play the game and won't let anything like what happened when he was a kid happen again, least of all to his brothers.
Ellie vs Swordsman! Who will come out on top? Also looks like next week is an Ellie focused episode.

Appears to be poisoned fruit (Snow White style) to me. Speculating of course.

Wow, that's a good catch!! I thought something is up with its eyes but I didn't notice that. Thank you for the heads up!

I don't know what it is about this show that makes it so entertaining for me. There's reasons for sure but in my mind they don't really explain why it's so enjoyable.
Can't wait for next Saturday

u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago
This was less interesting than the first episode, but I wasn't expecting fantasy aspects like the squirrel having supernatural abilities, and Chilly's hair changing color.
