I really, really love Johannes as a character. It would have been easy to make him another spoiled brat as the son of somone important, but he's more down-to-earth and aware of his surroundings. He even apologized for his father's behavior even though it wasn't his fault. And he so fucking innocent lol \Sees a man and a woman arm-wrestling*: "They didn't teach me this at the church!!"
Never change Johannes, never change!

Johannes: *gasp\* "unprotected hand holding!? this is heresy!'

Boy is there a lot of character/worldbuilding in the episode. And it feels that the real plot has not even begun.

We still have seven kingdoms to ship the brothers off to and we're only just getting to the first.

This definitely seems like a very long form story. If the anime is 12 episodes, it feels like it won't even be able to cover the beginning.

He has such a distinctive voice that it’s often it’s hard not to hear Dio no matter who Koyasu plays, but he really sounds different as Elliot the Castellan. It took me Episode 2 to finally realize it could be him and check the credits.
Fraternity said 女の子には優しくね, which is more like “you should be gentle with/nice to girls.” The line is meant to emphasize his playboy/free-love personality, which I don’t think the “go easy on her” translation quite captures. (I also think the translator confused “girls” plural with “girl” as in Eleonora.)
At last we get to see the Country of Long Nights!

Probably the "softest" I've heard Koyasu play a character in a long time. He's also like just...a normal dad who just happens to be high up the royal chain of command.

This show is one of those rare cases of an anime where the quality of its story comes from its masterful way of creating scenarios and storytelling rather than the more usual way of exploring the characters deeply by putting them in rather cliche scenarios. Shounen stories are good example of this where they usually have similar plots but they become entertaining by focusing on the other aspects of the story (and they're really good at it). On the other hand, an anime like Helck is an example where it sets up its own innovative plot devices, but ends up turning out rather underwhelming.
This show is unique because it's really good setting up many plot points that are weird, while at same time managing to not taking away from the sense of reality for its characters. So far it has established multiple characters and created an entire world with a lot of question, and what I like about it is how good it is at avoiding long expositions and setting relationships and characters by just a few lines of dialogue or just some action. My favorite example is how in this episode the marriage between Sleepless and Eleonora is decided but they never really talk about it despite their relatively good relationship. The show doesn't put emphasis on this, but you can't help but notice it. A lot of other questions are set up for the upcoming episodes as well, like the relationship between the princess and the knights, the entire mystery around Baribara, why everyone seems to react to Hungry saying he's hungry, why the seven knoghts are like this and so on. Anyway I'm just try to this is the best anime of the season so far

No squirrel in this episode?
And it was so funny that Nemukunai was crying so hard to show his reluctance to leave his brothers.
Come to think of it, he was crying when he saw the Princess in the first episode, so he might be a type to cry easily.

I'm just not sure by his reaction to the princess. I remember how he's crying of excitement that episode, but in this episode he's only a few meters from the princess and he acted quite nonchalantly

u/Cat_Gazer 10h ago
Indeed!
But this time, he said this is a new record for how close he gets to the Princess and he'd definitely write it down in his diary, so he does seem happy about it, but prolly just not in a romantic way, I guess? 🤣

That opening monologue makes it seem like the seven brothers were the ones that stepped into the fill the void left in the world after its creator vanished.
I'm more willing to believe in Insomniac x Eleonora this episode than I was last episode. There does seem to a little attraction there now plus the whole childhood friend thing. Whereas last episode it was kind of like the Castellan asked them to get married and they just shrugged and said okay like he asked them about the weather.
Chilly seems to be getting closer to finding out who Bruno is. Though I can't imagine the reveal will be any time soon though as we're now shifting to an Insomniac focus.
I wonder what caused the princess to bolt like that. Does she like Insomniac, but knows he taken? And why did they tell Insomniac about this dream infiltration spell that the Country of Long Nights has? In any case this shot is probably the best the princess has looked in the series so far.
While that might be best the princess has looked so far she isn't really do anything for me though. Ellie's whole tomboy thing is working for me and I want to see more.

Brunhild thought about the bard so I think she was genuinely worried about dream infiltration hence the need for a "meeting."

tbh the hairstyle doesn't natch any of the brothers shown instead I believe the one insomniac called dad is one of the seven who were important for their respective kingdom .

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20h ago
I don't see any sign of her liking insomniacs. However, the brothers always said they're only allowed 3 meters or something from the princess. Maybe a rule how the princess can't get too close in public to men? That would explain the Bruno disguise as well (like she could just don a female disguise, but chose a male persona). But she's sitting close to that bard just fine. Not sure.
I think it's just that they were caught in the battle so much that they didn't realise Insomniac is that close.

Rare falchion sighting! The sword they give Ellie for the journey, despite being a more typical longsword, also has a rather broad profile. Granted, that's common in fantasy stories, and maybe I'm just seeing what's not really there. But given the generally restrained design choices, I like to thing both these weapons were chosen to reflect the low armor, kinda early medieval(ish) style. The choreography in the duel was actually pretty good too.
Also, I really like the way magic is so casually introduced here. We only saw it for the first time last episode, and it took until episode 3 for us to know the titular brothers can all use it. No character makes special note of it. It feels so natural!

Ellie and Insomniac huh? She certainly has the hots for him haha. It’s gonna be a long journey for those two. Hopefully they can use their time to get closer.

u/Frontier246 1d ago
Definitely feels like Ellie and Insomniac have a complicated childhood friend thing going on. She's his bro but she still gets flustered over him...maybe this trip will help them sort out exactly how they feel about each other.

I hate that there's just so many red flags in these three episodes.
Like how the Castellan kept on saying he hopes everything will goes well for the marriage, them saying the marriage to happen only after the journey, and also all the forehadowing about spells (including the brothers giving more spell to Ellie's equipment, just in case).
It just felt like something will goes wrong there.

So are the brothers the ones who appeared to fill the void left by the man who created the world? That seems to be the implication. Is that why they can do magic? Can others in this world also use magic? So much left to learn and we're already 3 episodes in. Feels like this whole season might end up being prologue at this rate.
At least seems like we'll be following Elenora and Insomniac for a bit in their mission. That's better than just seeing each of the brothers leave and not learning what happens in the different countries.
Ellie seems to have a thing for Insomniac, which makes her nonchalant okay when her father asked her to marry him the more curious. She was blushing a lot more during the hand holding/arm wrestling. Maybe arranged marriages are the norm and children just go along with their parents wishes as a rule in this world?

Also I guess part of the reason that they're going to those kingdoms is help bring world peace back to the land after all the strife since the founder left.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20h ago
I need to rewatch, but I don't remember if Ellie and Insomniacs marriage was more of Castellan's idea or was it Insomniacs that gave the idea about it first.
3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 16h ago
It was not Insomniac's idea. In the first episode his mother tells Castellan that he's agreed to the marriage. So either his mother or Castellan proposed it.

Transition from Chilly focus to Insomniac focus.
Insomniac is popular with the ladies, and he is too nonchalant about marrying Ellie lol.
“You made me climb to the sixth floor for this [flirting]?” Lolol unexpected damage taken
End card was hilarious

Is Chilly gonna find out the truth soon?
Probably not any time soon lol.
Hah, Swordsman surrendered but still got thrown.
Of course. In a male dominated field Ellie has to be assertive and remind the boys that she's just as capable.
Ahahaha, what timing.
"You had me climb all the way up the 6th floor just to watch you two flirt? The disrespect."
Hah, I’m liking Ellie a lot so far.
Yeah. I'm liking that she's a classic tomboy in era where all the girls are typically proper and ladylike.

Girls got to keep herself well-fed on meat to be as strong as she needs to be as a swordswoman.

I developed two different wild theories over the course of watching this episode today.
First, I think the creator of the world that disappeared as mentioned in the opening bit of lore might be the father of the seven brothers, which might be why they're apparently all magical.
Second, based purely on the ED i think he might have disappeared because for some reason he turned into the fatass squirrel that the princess adopted. There's this shot of somebody looking up at the sky through their fingers, and then blinking and waking up in the squirrel's nest in some tree.
Unrelated to the wild-ass theorizing, I'm getting more on board with the Ellie and Insomniac ship now that we've seen them interact quite a bit more. Gotta love seeing the childhood friend apparently just getting to win. Though it does seem like there are some challenges ahead of her on her trip with her fiance considering the next episode PV.
I'm still waiting on a reveal that Hungary is a girl, he was even dressed up all pretty as a child in the flashback.

So the people intended to take over from the Founder in helping take care of the land where seven individuals with strong destinies they'd have to contend with? What a coincidence.
It's the famous swordfighting tournament and it was obvious that Swordsman and Eleonora would go head-to-head to see who would stand on-top! Complete with a fierce and intense clash of blades! Swordsman might be the better swordsman (heh) but Ellie is agile and knows how to pace him out.
Does Feverish have a crush on Anna-Marie? Also, Colette is the cooks' daughter which makes her perfect for Hungry!
If only Chilly knew that his beloved Hugo was there...just in her natural form.
Well, technically the swordfight was a tie since they both lost their blades but Ellie flipped Swordsman so she gets the win! But there's no hard feelings, Swordsman just wants her to take good care of his brother!
Hmm...so the Country of Long Nights can infiltrate and mess with people through their dreams? Is that why Insomniac is going, because he doesn't sleep?
Okay, I guess Ellie is marrying Insomniac. No muss no fuss. Though what would you expect from a girl who is going to the Country of Long Nights because she's built different than most girls?
Did Baribara pass out because she didn't want to hear about her son being in love with a male Margrave? Fighting, chivalry, and strategy, Baribara is your woman. But relationships? She can't handle it.
So this tower is where the boys used to live alongside their sickly father? And cute Smol Ellie would often play with Insomniac. Though even now when there's more of an emotional distance between them...him holding her hand has an effect on her.
Johannes! Son of that guy who was complaining about Insomniac's mom last week! But while pious and a little stuff, Johannes seems like an upstanding and honorable guy. Even if he doesn't think much of Ellie.
Baribara was exiled from the Country of Might? But why?
So the brothers have magic? Enough to charm Eleonora's blade for her? Feverish has heat magic, Chilly has cold magic, and Swordsman has...the ability to make blades sharper, which seems kind of obvious.
Eleonora has no time for dresses or cosmetics, but deep down she misses the simpler days with her and Insomniac as kids.
Insomniac is the first brother to leave and he's...not handling separation from his brothers well. But hopefully the journey to the Country of Night will go smoothly, even if it looks like their queen is targetting Ellie!

This one's been growing on me more and more. Just hoping we see more of the animals brother soon, we ain't seen much of him yet lol

Eleanora accepted the marriage a lot faster and nonchalantly then I had anticipated. I see what they're trying to emulate here, it's very medieval esque, things being more is dutiful. So it makes sense that Eleanora is letting her mind wander now.
Johannes is funny, he doesn't know what this is, but he's absolutely not here for it. He shan't stain his eyes with such debaucherous goings ons.
I don't know why I didn't expect them to be able just enchant things, but it's really convenient. Imaging enchanting a really good winter blanket, yeah the weather's got me cold. OH! A warming plate, so food doesn't get cold. Boots that can dry themselves after mucking around outside.
Chilly got his mama exasperated. I'm gonna she's the private type with regards to interpersonal involvement.
Now that's quite the emotional bye bye, but he's more silly than he initially gives off. Just a tender little guy under all that chainmail.

Honestly still don't know where this anime is going. However this just feel so nice to watch weekly.
I really love the vibes of the characters

Not enough people talking about the fact that they can suddenly cast spells. I mean, wtf?
1
u/SouekiSennoSTM 6h ago
Well, there was always some presence of magic evident in this world sprinkled in throughout the previous episodes, such as Chilly's hair changing color and whatnot. Now some fire and cold/ice spells, talk of some form of dream magic, etc.
Just that it's treated in a rather subdued and naturalistic fashion rather than loudly announced and focused in on because it's normal and just supposed to be another facet of ordinary daily life for the characters. And the series has a relaxed vibe.
