First Timer
"This is just a friendly game." "It doesn't mean anything." Says the guys sure as fuck acting like it means a lot what with the mental chess matching they are doing. So L has adopted the strategy of just flat out tell Light everything to trip him up, and its working at least a little bit. Especially since he's still poking him in the ego. Well Light's dad having a hear attack was ironic considering Kira's go to cause of death. Well outside of setting up the further battle of wits (and making people shout just fuck already) we get Kira doing the weird thing of threatening TV people to air some tapes he sent them, while they were in at put Kira tapes on TV no need for death threats.

Light and L would have the craziest anger sex imaginable if this was another anime. I'm not so sure this isn't a BL in disguise.
I really like the twist of detective Yagami having a heart attack. It's such an abrupt change of fate that it almost served as a lucky break for Light. If his dad had died, it'd almost by default clear his name because why would he kill his father?

OH MY GOD THERE'S A DEATH NOTE REWATCH????
God I wish I could join in, Death Note is maybe my favorite piece of media of all time.
But daily is just too much sobs.
That said, I am so glad you're watching the dub. Brad Swalie as Light is what made me fall in love with anime for the first time this year.

u/Holofan4life 6d ago
He is the perfect mix of serious and total ham.

If you've never seen footage of him recording in the booth, you should totally look some up. He's goddamn terrifying, in the best way. He goes from nice friendly Canadian bro to absolute full on crazy eyes the second he hears those timing beeps lol.

What are your thoughts on Light and L having a tennis match?
i love how it's like a school anime now
What are your thoughts on L trying to rage bait Light with a fake fourth photograph knowing if he says there's only three that will reveal he is actually Kira?
i actually fucking laughed that's so good and i'd be so pissed, rage bait is EXACTLY that word here
What are your thoughts on L wanting Light to join the task force to work on the Kira case?
bruh how is this only ep 9 it's so good
What are your thoughts on detective Yagami having a heart attack and Light’s reaction to it?
felt p genuine, either that or Light's killing it with the acting
What are your thoughts on the way the show can go from batshit insane sequences to well written scenes of Light and L trying to outsmart each other?
im actually mc loving it
---
OMG imagine if they become best friends and eventually have to kill each other like spyxfamily romance type stuff HAHAHHA
I love how it's become a school anime now LOL
This is literally overthinking winning a tennis match LOL
Also everyone just watching lol
In life you can't win on defence, you need to attack
Actually good advice
His posture makes him smarter.... Okay bro
Wow L is smart, I'd be pissed having my own message be twisted and used against me
I ship them, just glazing each other lol
Midway through convo he just zones out after his father confirms that's L LOL
He got called corny
Ryuk doesn't give a fuck
Hey look it's a radio room I'm trained for there

u/Holofan4life 2d ago
first time pls be gentle
No 😈
The great thing about Light potentially joining the task force is it feels like L can't lose. Either he proves Light is indeed Kira, or he uses Light’s intellect to track Kira down and prove Light’s innocence. It's actually a big vote of confidence by L on Light because he's basically saying he can't solve the Kira case without him.
Also, I totally ship Light and L lol

i want L to pound Light (with the law)

Pound justice into him

justice comes in many forms, including inches

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.
Names need not be written down.
Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.
I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.
I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show is good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.
Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.
I just got done having a screaming session with my mother. I feel good.
People leaving
Light and L playing tennis
This is so ridiculous
L claims he was a British world champion.
Lived in England for 5 years
L serving
Ryuk almost got hit
I also love L refuses to change his outfit.
Mr. Yagami talking to someone
He seems important
Four months since the case came to the public's attention.
L and the NPA is considered incompetent by the general public.
I'd argue the military forces in Godzilla films are the real incompetent ones
Mr. Yagami says L right now is risking his life.
Cuts to a tennis match
Light and L continuing to try to out do each other.
Light wonders what L's end goal in mind.
When are these two going to go on a dinner date together? Seriously?
Well, look at that. L really was a tennis champion. Maybe.
That makes Light hanging with him all the more impressive.
These two should just bang. That's it, that's the comment.
Gotta go to task force headquarters
This adaptation of The Prince of Tennis is pretty wild.
Walking together now
Light actually managed to beat L
Now Light wants to take him out for a drink.
Wow, we're really getting that date, huh? :P
L says he thinks Light is Kira.
But only a 1% possibility
Now Light suggests he work with him on the task force.
Light as he walks away says internally that no matter how little L suspects him, the 1% means he has grounds to prevent him from meeting anyone on the task force.
So, no drink then?
OH YEAH DRINK
Light actually looks pretty spiffy
L says he has to sit the way he does.
His skills might be reduced by roughly 40%.
Right...
L wants to test his deductive reasoning skills.
Presenting him photographs of three notes.
Light notices the print numbers on them.
Light suggests Kira wrote these and encoded a message for L as well.
Ooh, there were four photographs!
L faked it!
L is trying to gaslight Light, the genius!
And Light trying to downplay it
L then asks how would Light prove Kira's innocence or guilt.
Light says he would make Kira say something that was never made public in any way.
"Kinda like what you were doing just now."
Oh snap
L remarks how amazing it is that Light can instantly think of a scenario where Kira speaks to an investigator.
He puts him at 3%, but still wants to work alongside.
Where he's Kira or not, L stands to gain either way.
Light then suggests that maybe he's Kira.
He's Kira, he's Kira, you're Kira, I'm Kira! Are there any other Kiras I should know about?!
Light wants Light’s identity confirmed.
This feels obvious he's trying to get his name to write his name again.
Light puts him at 7%
Light wonders if he has a death wish.
A Death Note wish?
OH SHIT. LIGHT’S FATHER HAD A HEART ATTACK!
Does that make Light more innocent?
Light and L in the hospital wing
Dad suffered a heart attack through stress.
He originally thought Kira was behind it.
Yeah, so preposterous...
How is L still barefoot in a hospital?
L reveals that dad knows he is L.
Wait, father just told Light he's known as Ryuzaki.
Does that mean...
Light says there's no hurry to rush into things.
Light explaining his suspicions to Light’s father of his son being a suspect.
And yet he considers him quite impressive.
Light says he wants to catch Kira to prove who he is.
"We'll find who's responsible for this!" -- Guy in hot dog suit
Dad believes it's impossible Light could be Kira.
"What is truly evil is the power to kill people."
He says no true happiness can be attained by that, for that person is cursed.
Light and L leave
Light asks what he can do to convince him he isn't Kira.
He'd be willing to be locked up to prove his innocence.
L tells him to just be patient.
I kinda feel like L wants Light to prove to him he isn't Kira because he sees something special in him.
Light says he can't help with the investigation until his father is healthy again.
As L drives off, Light wonders what L's real name is.
L says he's happier than he's ever been since he's discovered the Death Note.
God, the music here is so awesome
What is this?
A radio station?
Fanto :D
Give me pictures! Pictures of Kira!
Ooh, cassette tapes
Seems he got his story
Kira ordering they broadcast the tapes or the board of directors is killed.
This guy is only obsessed with the ratings.
"I'm so excited I feel like I'm having a heart attack now!"
Would that comment be considered in poor taste in universe?
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. The tennis match was absurd and completely devoid of reality, but the whole café scene was fantastic as it was just Light and L trying to gaslight each other. And then Light’s dad having a heart attack added an extra layer to Light’s character where it shows he truly does care about his family. I think it helps give Light some semblance of a moral compass, as fleeting as it may be.
It really was smart that L would create a fake photo that only Light would know doesn't exist. It's perfect rage bait and I think it shows how well Light is at composing himself. If I was in the same situation, I don't see how I don't spill the tea. And then Light trying to turn it back on L was excellent work that highlights how equal they are as intellectuals. They really are two sides of the same coin.
I'd have this only behind episode 8. This show is amazing because they can have sequences where I say "This is so stupid" but then they do something like the café scene where I say "You know, this is actually pretty clever and very well written dialogue. It's like cheese but grade A cheese that is hard to compare to.
It's such a flex that the show can go from mindless popcorn flick frivolity into a psychologically chess match and have it come off so seamlessly that it's still believable that it's the same show. I think that's a testament to Light and L as characters and how they're so specifically written that they're willing to go to whatever depths to one up each other.

What are your thoughts on Light and L having a tennis match?
So preposterous lol
What are your thoughts on L trying to rage bait Light with a fake fourth photograph knowing if he says there's only three that will reveal he is actually Kira?
Genius. And I like how Light responds talking about what's been made available to the public.
What are your thoughts on L wanting Light to join the task force to work on the Kira case?
L isn't dumb. Even though Light is a suspect, he's still so smart that only L himself is an intellectual peer. Might as well use his smarts to his advantage.
What are your thoughts on detective Yagami having a heart attack and Light’s reaction to it?
It was nice to see that Light actually does care about his father.
What are your thoughts on the way the show can go from batshit insane sequences to well written scenes of Light and L trying to outsmart each other?
It's great. It reminds me of a Studio Trigger show. It's like just when you think you can turn your brain off, the show surprises you with a twist that's very intelligent. The shoe is very effective when it comes to surprising the audience.

Watching Dubbed
Finally, a nice relaxing game of tennis.
L and Light trying to play mind games with each other over tennis is honestly really funny.
I’m just gonna assume anything L says about his backstory is made up unless proven otherwise.
The cut from Light’s dad saying that L is risking his life as they speak to him playing tennis is amazing.
Light and L’s inner monologues about what the other person is expecting the other one to do is so funny to me and I don’t know if it’s on purpose or not. It very much reminds me of the whole iocane powder scene from The Princess Bride.
This random guy running up to give Light’s tennis backstory is also unintentionally kinda funny.
More over the top inner monologues from the two of them. It’s great.
This is the most dramatic tennis match in the history of the anime.
L just straight up tells Light he thinks he’s Kira. Also, I love how he just casually tells Light he can go ahead and ask him anything else.
Okay good we’re finally acknowledging the weird way L sits.
A lot of L’s odd habits like his sitting and the way he bites his thumb do make me wonder if he’s supposed to be autistic.
L trying to mess with Light with these letters is pretty interesting but also funny.
So much of this show is inner monologues of these two guys trying to outsmart each other. It’s great.
I’m guessing Light’s dad’s heart attack is unrelated to the Kira case and just an unfortunate coincidence.
This whole conversation with Light, L, and Light’s dad is pretty interesting.
Light is putting up a good act but L is still very suspicious of him. Good.
Light is pretty confident in himself even though Ryuk is warning him otherwise.
Very interesting cliffhanger here. I’m guessing the tapes sent to the station are a fake of some kind but I’m not actually sure.
Questions of the Day:
What are your thoughts on Light and L having a tennis match?
The most dramatic tennis match in anime history.
What are your thoughts on L trying to rage bait Light with a fake fourth photograph knowing if he says there's only three that will reveal he is actually Kira?
Great strategy and also hilarious
What are your thoughts on L wanting Light to join the task force to work on the Kira case?
Definitely seems like a trick L's trying to pull
What are your thoughts on detective Yagami having a heart attack and Light’s reaction to it?
I wonder if Light ever would go as far as to kill his father if it came down to it.
What are your thoughts on the way the show can go from batshit insane sequences to well written scenes of Light and L trying to outsmart each other?
Oh, I think L and Light trying to outsmart each other are also completely insane

Finally, a nice relaxing game of tennis.
Lol, relaxing
L and Light trying to play mind games with each other over tennis is honestly really funny.
It definitely feels very campy
I’m just gonna assume anything L says about his backstory is made up unless proven otherwise.
I think it would be hilarious if it was actually true.
The cut from Light’s dad saying that L is risking his life as they speak to him playing tennis is amazing.
There's way this show isn’t self-aware
Light and L’s inner monologues about what the other person is expecting the other one to do is so funny to me and I don’t know if it’s on purpose or not. It very much reminds me of the whole iocane powder scene from The Princess Bride.
I think the tennis match is the closest the show has felt to an episode of FLCL.
This random guy running up to give Light’s tennis backstory is also unintentionally kinda funny.
I guess it is true?
You know what L reminds me of? Roger from Family Guy. He always assumes various identities.
More over the top inner monologues from the two of them. It’s great.
Quality meal
This is the most dramatic tennis match in the history of the anime.
And that includes the actual tennis anime.
L just straight up tells Light he thinks he’s Kira. Also, I love how he just casually tells Light he can go ahead and ask him anything else.
I'm surprised at how matter of fact that moment is played.
Okay good we’re finally acknowledging the weird way L sits.
About time
A lot of L’s odd habits like his sitting and the way he bites his thumb do make me wonder if he’s supposed to be autistic.
I'm not sure that was taken account foe because Autism wasn't as mainstream in the 2000s as it is now. I think he's just meant to be eccentric.
L trying to mess with Light with these letters is pretty interesting but also funny.
He's such a troll
So much of this show is inner monologues of these two guys trying to outsmart each other. It’s great.
It makes it easy to take notes
I’m guessing Light’s dad’s heart attack is unrelated to the Kira case and just an unfortunate coincidence.
So great
This whole conversation with Light, L, and Light’s dad is pretty interesting.
I like seeing a nice side of Light
Light is putting up a good act but L is still very suspicious of him. Good.
I don't see him ever not being suspicious of him.
Light is pretty confident in himself even though Ryuk is warning him otherwise.
Probably should listen to him
Very interesting cliffhanger here. I’m guessing the tapes sent to the station are a fake of some kind but I’m not actually sure.
I guess we'll find out
Questions of the Day:
What are your thoughts on Light and L having a tennis match?
The most dramatic tennis match in anime history.
These two can make paint drying intense.
What are your thoughts on L trying to rage bait Light with a fake fourth photograph knowing if he says there's only three that will reveal he is actually Kira?
Great strategy and also hilarious
It's so smart! This show is actually pretty well written when it comes to characters actions.
What are your thoughts on L wanting Light to join the task force to work on the Kira case?
Definitely seems like a trick L's trying to pull
Mayhaps
What are your thoughts on detective Yagami having a heart attack and Light’s reaction to it?
I wonder if Light ever would go as far as to kill his father if it came down to it.
Maybe if he finds out
What are your thoughts on the way the show can go from batshit insane sequences to well written scenes of Light and L trying to outsmart each other?
Oh, I think L and Light trying to outsmart each other are also completely insane
Yes, but it's a different type of insanity. They would outsmart the other if they weren't of a similar wavelength.

Thoughts on L being a British world tennis champion?
I feel like he's probably lying. I don't trust a thing L says about himself.
Thoughts L and the NPA being deemed incompetent by the general public?
I mean yeah from their point of view they haven't done anything to stop the Kira murders
Thoughts on Light offering to take L out to a café?
Well that's nice of him
What are your thoughts on L saying he suspects Light may be Kira, but he puts it at a 1% possibility?
I love how he just flat out says it
Thoughts on L wants to test Light’s deductive reasoning skills?
L's whole scheme here is both clever and hilarious
Thoughts on Light saying he would make Kira say something that was never made public in any way and that that's what L is trying to do to him?
Light was just internally screaming during this entire scene
Thoughts on Light’s father believing it's impossible his son could be Kira?
I mean yeah that makes sense for him to say. That's why he's not as good a detective as L.
What are your thoughts on detective Yagami saying no true happiness can be attained by the Death Note, for that person is cursed?
Yeah that seems true. I feel like only bad things can come from it
What are your thoughts on Kira ordering the TV station broadcast the tapes or the board of directors is killed?
I'm still fairly certain these are fake

He's too biased

Yeah that seems true. I feel like only bad things can come from it
More than likely
What are your thoughts on Kira ordering the TV station broadcast the tapes or the board of directors is killed?
I'm still fairly certain these are fake
One can only hope

I’m a bit surprised that Light didn’t take a chance (as grim as this is) and exclaim “is it Kira?!” After finding out that his father had a heart attack. That’s a very reasonable assumption anyway and might have reduced L’s hunch by a few percent.
Decent episode though.
