Colorado Ends Twelve-Step Mandate for Parolees, Opening Door to Secular Recovery Options

This week, the Colorado Department of Corrections ended the requirement that people on parole attend Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or any other religious twelve-step program.

The department has agreed to implement the core protections of our Recovery Options legislation immediately — no law needed. Starting now, the parole board will refer people to peer support networks, including secular options like SMART Recovery and LifeRing. Sober housing providers must now disclose any faith-based requirements, and anyone whose placement conflicts with their beliefs must be told about alternative options and referred to them. And if no secular group is nearby, parolees will be able to use a telehealth option instead.

If you need a threat of hell to be a good person, you aren't a good person.

"Without God, why wouldn't you just murder and steal?" is the most insulting question a religious person can ask. It reveals that their own morality is based entirely on fear of punishment, not genuine empathy.

I don't help people because I'm afraid of a cosmic dictator; I help them because they are human and they are suffering. Morality is about compassion, not obedience. If the only thing stopping you from being a terrible person is the fear of eternal torture, then you're not a good person. You're just a bad person on a leash.

My boyfriend doesn’t want to marry me if I don’t believe in God

My boyfriend (24M) and I (24F) have been together for 5 years now. We are serious and are both thinking of marriage within the next 2-3 years. Recently, he began going to Church frequently and became a firm believer of Christianity. I myself am born Catholic and was an avid Church-goer in the past, but have not been practicing these last few years.

I like to think of myself as an atheist now, and his recent conversion has been causing great friction in our relationship. He told me that he doesn’t see us getting married unless I share the same beliefs as him. He feels our marriage will only be subpar if I don’t centre God in my life as he does. This really stung as we have had a great relationship all this while and I don’t see why he’s giving me this ultimatum.

He has asked me if I was willing to try and deepen my faith slowly, but I am hesitant. I understand the Church’s view on partners being “uneqally yoked”, but I can’t bring myself to believe in something I genuinely don’t. I believe we both have good values and morals so we will be able to work things out in a marriage regardless of our belief systems.

Unfortunately he doesn’t share the same opinion. I don’t know if we are just no longer compatible or if I should just try to meet him where he is at.

Firstly, glad I didn’t have coffee in my mouth to spit out. Second, it’s just wild that there is an entire world out there where Noah’s ark being found if a fact.

How do you raise your child to be atheist?

*sorry for the bad english in advance

I'm just curious how would you raise your children if you want them to be atheists? I'm raised Catholic but even as a child i never believed in a God and when i hit my teenage years, that's when i became anti-theist (sorry if this offends anyone). I'm nowhere near having a child but, I know I want to have a family in the future. For context im gay so it would definitely offend me if my child wants to be a part of any religion because most of them are homophobic.

the concept of sky daddy 😂😂

So today i went to a breast cancer awareness event at a clinic, and every 10 minutes or so somebody would thank god or start a prayer. This especially happened when survivors showed up and started thanking god about how thankful they are that they survived . All i could think about was; how are yall gonna thank sky daddy for ‘curing’ you of a disease that he knew about and could’ve stopped? or is his omniscience and omnipotence selective 😭? almost walked out because out of all the people that could’ve been given credit, doctors, friends and family who supported you, and most importantly yourself and your body who literally fought off a CANCER and you still thank sky daddy is just insane and sad to me.

and don’t even get me started on when they started thanking god because it didn’t rain like the forecast said 🤣

Why is it so hard for theists to accept evolution?

Why is it so hard for theists to accept evolution? Evolution is one of the most strongly supported and deeply investigated theories in modern science, so why do so many religious persons take issue with it?

I was having a discussion with a Christian minister/church elder the other day, and he said that ”evolution is just a theory.” Well gravity is just a theory as well, but I don’t see him jumping out of buildings.

Species have descended (with modifications) from ancestral populations. We can even model micro-evolutionary changes happening to the human species in real time. There is a superabundance of evidence supporting evolution from myriad disciplines, including biology, anthropology and archaeology.

Denying evolution is a form of science denialism, no different to opining that the world is flat or that gravity does not exist.

It grates on my nerves when people ask me questions like, “If we evolved from apes, why are apes still alive?” “What about the missing link?” 🥲🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ We didn’t evolve from apes. We share a common ancestor with apes who branched off from that lineage 6-8 million years ago. The only missing link is their missing linkage/connection to rationality and science.

Rant over.

Isn't it painfully obvious that there is bo god?

Said to be invisible, and in the sky, it sees everything like how does that make any sense? After you figure out santa was a lie to control people without needing constant enforcement, why would following the same logic, god be real? Theists will often say "they feel God in prayer" but that's just the placebo effect in action. Tell me: with no real evidence why do people still believe in this 2000 year old cult?

Edit: I meant no not bo the joke is getting old guys

The quote used to justify religion during a conversation let me dumbfounded

Was having a discussion with a religious friend. Our conversations are never contentious and I know I’ll meet her through to them but I find it amusing.

The phrase she used to counter my point was:

“Logic is the enemy of faith”

Like… I feel like that should have been a point i made against religion. Not one made for it.

Unhinged and Hateful

When it comes to the most bizarre, hateful and harmful beliefs, nothing beats religion for special pleading.

Just a single example of what someone once told me when I asked: So Adam and Eve were the only humans, so when their children "went forth and took wives" where did they come from?

The answer I got: first God created the earth, then he created the oceans. Then he made birds, and fish, and animals, and blacks, and and Asians... and then he created Man!

At the time, I was gobsmacked at how audaciously racist it was. But for him it was a feature, not a flaw. They hadn't come up with it on their own, it was taught to them.

What are some of the most unhinged things you've heard?

One of the things I hate the most about Christianity

So let's say someone passes away. There is sadness, grief and just all around a hard time. You go to a church and do that it's the same way until it's time to talk. SO THEN INSTEAD OF THE DECEASED PERSON GETTING RESPECT THE CHURCH THEN SAYS BUT WE HAVE TO GIVE ALL GLORY TO GOD AND THANK HIM AND HOW HE HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR US, HOW HE'S SUCKED OUR COCKS. HOW HE'S DONE THIS AND THAT.

Basically it seems there is no respect for the deceased, you can't say one minute "oh my I can believe Jerry is gone" and then say "WELL THIS IS A DAY ABOUT JERRY BUT FIRST AND FOREMOST WE HAVE TO THANK THE MOST SPECIAL PERSON FOR BRINGING US HERE TODAY"

So all in all it's not really about that person, it's about your God. Basically fuck the dead guy, thank you God. What a bunch of clown bullshit. It's even worse when there's live music and people are up there clapping and singing happy Christian music

Motherfucker JERRYS DEAD THEY MESSED HIM ALL THE WAY UP YOU HAD TO HAVE A CLOSED CASKET FUNERAL BECAUSE HE WAS SHOT BUT YOU WANNA CELEBRATE?!

Man this shit pisses me off, it's sad truly it's sad
