Meta PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS!

Looking for quick and helpful answers? Follow these rules and make helping you as easy as possible!

  • Title: Choose a meaningful title concerning your problem.
  • Text: Describing your problem with enough detail is essential. Please realize that helpers are not familiar with your project. Provide all relevant information, so others can immideately understand what you are struggling with.

Example: Say, you have a problem with lots of identical objects in your scene: Let us know whether you created these copies by hand, used the Particle System or Geometry Nodes.

  • Images/Videos: When posting screenshots, show us your full blender window (not cropped, no monitor photos). This will make lots of helpful information available to helpers at first sight that may seem irrelevant to you (For example your Blender version). If you add video links, please consider adding time stamp info to the part you want helpers to see.

You can upload images and short video clips (up to 60s) to imgur.com and post the links in your question or as comment.

  • *.blend files: Don’t add links to your *.blend files when posting questions right away. Helpers will ask you for it if they need to take a look. Most people prefer reading a good description and looking at images to see what your post is about.
  • 'Solved' flair: Once your question was answered, please remember to change the flair of your post to “Solved”, so helpers don’t have to read into your question just to see it has already been answered.

You can change the flair by clicking on the small icon below your post resembling a label.

EDIT: You can also include "!solved" in the comments to have Automod change the flair for you.

Be nice and respectful with each other :)

Unsolved How would you go about making a stylized skin shader like this?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I've watched abou 1000 different tutorials about making stylized shaders, but they mostly cover either realistic skin shading, overwatch style skin texturing or Straight up anime Cel shading. None of them get close to this específic style of shading that you see in some never gacha games.

I already know How to set up a Basic Toon shader, and have been able to improvise some shaders that get Close to this, but nome of them managed to hit the Same result. I know a decent part of this final result are textures painted by hands. But as you can see in the Second imagem there are also shadows and highlights created by the shader itself.

Unsolved Revisited Question: How would you sharpen the edges on this scanned object?

• Upvotes

3 years ago I posted this question about cleaning up a blurry scanned mesh.

https://www.reddit.com/r/blenderhelp/s/CDhWSKbCEq

And the answer back then was...cleaning it manually in sculpt mode or hand model via "Add Mesh" and booleans.

That advice led me to get better at sculpting in Blender and learning basic modeling and etc. Since then I've gotten really good at manually cleaning up messy meshes with Blender.

All in all, I'm pretty happy because it led to me learning a fun skill.

But it's been 3 years and I'm curious if anything has changed since then. If there are any add-ons you'd buy from the market that would help with this kind of job, or any secondary programs you'd run the mesh through in addition to using Blender.

So, 3 years later I'll ask again.

"So how would you go about making the edges on this object a bit sharper?"

How would you streamline the process of sharpening the edges to make them more defined? An example being sharpening the edges around the vent cutout ovals so they were more defined. Or sharpening that edge where the rounded rivets meet flat surfaces so they are more clearly defined?

Thanks

Unsolved How do I make this kind of hair in blender?

How do I make realistic hair like Vanellopes? In the speed sculpt I watched it makes me think that she pressed some button to make it instantly realistic... Is it like an add on? How do I achieve that kind of hair? Please tell me. Sakuras hair looks amazing too, I'd love to know how to be able to do that.

Credits:

The first three pictures (of Vanellope) were screenshotted from @elsatje on YouTube, and the last two pictures (of Minty Sakura) were screenshotted from HiROKI ITOKAZU on weebly.

I'm pretty new to blender, sorry for the dumb question.

Meta How do I work more efficiently and push past roadblocks without burning out?

I have been diving into animation for a few months now and creating my first project with learning by doing. I am making slow but very visible progress but I do feel like there is much room for major improvement and maybe a little reality check. I am really looking for solid advice that I can take to the bank.

Some challenges I’ve noticed are:

I know animation takes time and I end up not getting much done in a session and only maybe animate some keyframes, pose, maybe play with nodes, weight paint and that’s it for the day because I just can’t make myself keep going for the day because I frequently get overwhelmed with constantly meeting roadblocks around every corner.

I have an outdated version of Blender because my PC cannot handle newer versions and I don’t have the funds to buy a new PC and the documentation and walkthroughs are scarce.

There’s this saying that when you start Blender you should start small. Many say too ambitious projects cause burnout but for me having done both paths in creating small and now an ambitious project it feels the opposite. Because smaller projects just feel like they lack purpose and I don’t see the point of them other than learning and getting rid of them afterwards. For me, learning from an ambitious project, even if larger, motivates me more.

My goal is not to upload an animation to YouTube and hope for the best because saturation and AI slop will likely bury it. My goal is to find out what I want to make and figure out how I can find common ground with what the audience in my animation’s niche likes. I also want to figure out how I can create a good animation framework like plot and storyline that I believe I can do better in than other animations. If I cannot compete with them in aesthetics right now maybe I can use some of my writing skills I’ve developed over the years to plan out some more intriguing short story ideas.  Of course it won’t be a very long animation or too big but it will be something. I am aware that it could fail and that’s the reality but I will gain valuable knowledge if it does.

Unsolved Disolve faces and adjust uv's with Geometry Nodes

Thumbnail

I'm creating a Geometry Nodes setup that wil disolve faces.

Smaller triangles - that are in a vertex group - are getting disolved into bigger ones. It works by looking for the closest vertex that is not in the vertex group, and move them to that position, and then merge them.

This part I got already working, and I'm using that to create LOD's for my game.

The problem is with the uv's. As you can see in one of the screenshots, this leaves gaps in the uv's.

( It's the same when you move or merge vertecies in edit mode, that also leaves gaps. )

I don't want to re-unwrap it because then the LOD's want match anymore.

So for each uv point/vertex that wil be removed, I need to adjust the uv's with GN by moving them to the position of the corresponding vertex. In the screenshot, it needs to move from A to B.

But I can't get this working.

Does someone know how to do this?

Unsolved Looking for tutorials for "Noodle/Stop-motion" stylized character.

Hey party people, I have been searching for months for a tutorial that would assist greatly in creating a 'noodley' type character like seen in this image, It seems that I dont have enough experience to use what I learnt from most tutorials to make this, everytime I make adjustments from the tutorial it ends up going quite bad, so im wondering if anyone knows/has a tutorial quite close to a character of this style. Thank ya <3

Unsolved I really really want to move to Blender but jesus the materials...

I come from a decade of experience in Cinema 4D. It's honestly a super cool software, but I want to move to Blender because you guys are stealing all the fun. The Blender community is thriving and I feel left out.

However, how do you guys manage to use materials in your projects ? In Cinema 4D, we have a "material manager" where materials can exist without being assigned to anything. So you can create loads of versions of different ones, switch & swap them on different objects to see what works best, and have some laying around "unused" until you find the right use for them and drop them in one click. It's incredibly user-friendly and intuitive.

In Blender, it seems you can't have a material that's unassigned. So does it ever happen to you to say "damn, that concrete pavement material I created 20mins ago would have worked great here" but you can't try it, because you couldn't leave it aside. So you have to create a new one from scratch ?

I don't get it. What's your mindset regarding materials and especially swapping them on different objects to trial them and see what works best?

im guessing something with weight paint, changing the origin does not do anything. the other part does not have a problem. it was going soo sooooo smooth until my challange as a modeller comes in
