He’s genuinely sadistic. If he was simply practical he wouldn’t be trying to make Teddy panic as it objectively makes this whole thing much harder
23
u/Apprehensive-Wall632 Aug 21 '26
I wouldn’t really call him sadistic. It’s evident that Orion has been through some pretty heavy bullying in the past, and has problems of self worth due to his perceived inadequacy compared to other Milky’s. He’s probably internalized a method of dishing out what he gets. He know’s Teddy doesn’t like him, so his response is to level every insult he can at every opportunity as a defense mechanism against a perceived threat.
5
u/Novel-Improvement-38 #1 Teddy simp Aug 21 '26
Who said Teddy doesn’t like him? Only reason Teddy has beef with him is because Orion keeps harassing him. Teddy definitely leaned into it but Orion didn’t like Teddy even before the runt comment.
14
u/Apprehensive-Wall632 Aug 21 '26
Well of course Teddy doesn’t like him because of Orion’s persistent insults, but that’s not how Orion perceives it. Orion evidently comes from a background where your ability to produce results is equivalent to your worth to others. That’s why the runt comment hit him so hard, and why they have been basically enemies since then. Orion think’s Teddy has a low opinion of him, and in his world where decide standing that basically makes them enemies in his mind.
3
u/Otterbotanical Aug 21 '26
"because you don't like me, I'm going to make sure you hate me" what a wonderful and wise response
7
u/Kiita-Ninetails Aug 21 '26
My guy, NONE of the sawians have a healthy and reasonable perspective on social interaction. Their role models are literally serial killing scientific sociopaths. None of these people have well developed social skills.
2
u/Otterbotanical Aug 21 '26
But the other three are trying. They want to feel good, they're scared and they are sharing that fear with each other. They have all had internal crises, and they have all attempted to reach out to the milky in their own way. I'll even accept him biting at Teddy for accidentally calling him a name that struck a chord, and trying to give a hug unasked. However here, Teddy is obviously just terrified, none of them are picking on the milky but he's still choosing to make sure Teddy knows that he's worthless. Choosing to pick the words that hurt most, when no one is doing shit to him. He's antagonizing them because he knows he has power. They need him, so he's free to say anything and they just have to take it.
As you said, they all have horrible social skills, but it seems to be working just fine for 3 of them. Only one is somehow getting more and more prickly.

u/Kiita-Ninetails Aug 21 '26
I mean they are, a lot of the Milky are and that is the point I feel. Because you have to understand the world they exist within, scientists represent power, control, and stability to the sawians. So for Milky especially, who are percieved as only good for their smarts it is not a shocker a LOT of them inherit those traits from their role models.
As I have said many times, in the situation the sawians are in. "In control" generally means trying to be a sociopathic scientist because those are the ones that their whole lives have been in control.
And we see that Orion has a powerful need to feel like they are in control of things. Almost every time they lash out its when something challenges that idea of control, and when they have to give it up it clearly is a huge struggle. When biscut saved them they were clearly struggling with needing help, and after that they very quickly asserted themselves as the 'leader' to regain that control.
So when Teddy comes along, being the cause of many of the woes of others. And pushing back when pressed and not giving Orion that control of just meekly following along, and morever, questioning Orion's ability. Orion lashes out, and still lashes out. Because Teddy, intentionally or not, called into question Orion's ability to control the situation. And even here, Orion isn't primarily trying to help. They are primarily looking to get control back. "I am the leader, its my plan, I'm in charge."
8
u/Myoxocephalus Aug 21 '26
If he only wanted to be sadistic, he could have said there was no option but to break Teddy’s shoulders and shove him out. I think he’s got other motivations.
Either way, he’s still being a fucking dick1
u/Otterbotanical Aug 21 '26
You're now seeing what I was seeing, being unnecessarily ruthless, nearly enjoying making teddy feel as messed up as possible. This is not equal response to Teddy calling him runt or hugging him without asking. Literally telling him he would rather let him die. Little bit of pink background in the Teddy, Biscuit, and Stringbean comic.

I’m genuinely curious of Orion is meant to be written as an antagonist or not cause it’s hard to read him as anything else at this point
0
u/BleepBloopRobo Aug 22 '26
I mean, at least personally I've never really gotten that impression. He's a terrible ass to Teddy but like. Someone being a traumatized asshole who takes every effort to make you feel bad doesn't make them more of an antagonist than the planet full of hungry shadecrawlers and constant risks of death. At least to me.

I believe this is the scientists having previously been talking to one another and telling another to leave Orion to rot as they have no use for a “runt”, or a group of Orion’s fellow milkies which he could have looked up to and now feels he has to perform just as well as they had but in reality they heavily doubt themselves.

10
u/Emergency-Wish6080 Aug 21 '26
As your local Orion defender, I would like to point out that Teddy was also pretty abrasive and distant until Stringbean helped them confront their past traumas. And it seems very obvious that Orion is carrying the same sort of stuff around that they haven't dealt with yet, for example, the word 'runt' was obviously a sort of trigger there. So yes, Orion is being nasty right now, but theyre dealing with a difficult situation (remember, their lives are all at risk if they can't get Teddy dislodged), theyre doing so under the pressure of being 'the smart one' who has to step up and rescue the group, and doing so under the weight of unresolved traumas weighing invisibly on them.
4
u/Federal-Income1149 Milky Aug 21 '26
To add to this, did anyone noticed how they actually contradicted their own statement by their actions? For someone who could have let Teddy to rot, they are now sacrificing their hand for a method, that probably will have less damage to Teddy than the original bad option. Very weird for someone who doesn't care to provide aid to THAT extend. They could have chosen the different, more painful method instead, but seems like deep down they care enough to create a diff idea.
Logically, the question is, why their actions contradict their words? Simple really, if you are familiar with line of thoughts Orion has: if you care, you are vulnerable. If you are vulnerable, you get hurt. Therefore, show no weakness, if anyone thinks you are doing it for them and you care - demolish this logic inside of their head. Let them think you don't care and push them away. What they are saying here is not only for Teddy, but for themself as well.
One of the reason why I like Orion so much is how they will truly test the group. Example, will Stringbean go against their own concept of helping everyone without conditions if the one who needs help is actively hurting their friend? After all, it's easy to find kindness and forgiveness to someone who doesn't act as a douche-bag to someone you like than to someone who does. Will they see through their defense and try to help or will they sacrifice their values to pursue an easier strategy? Eventually, we will find out
-1
u/Otterbotanical Aug 21 '26
I don't think they're in a position to need to be tested. I think the milky is helping just because it's logical, nothing more. He doesn't want to deal with the fallout from all three of them if he went with his preferred option of breaking Teddy's shoulders. He clearly wants A) teddy to be dropped off a cliff and B) ENJOYS hurting, scaring, and insulting Teddy.
I really honestly don't care about the fucking thing anymore. If he gets a redemption arc, I'm skipping it
2
u/Federal-Income1149 Milky Aug 21 '26
At this point, there is nothing I can additionaly say to you that will change your mind not am I interested in this. Your zealous sense of justice (or judgement, since one thing you mentioned is your interpretation, not the actual fact) is blinding to say the least. To the extent of having zero hope or care for redemption is still very interesting.
(We've been through this dance before. Intent to hurt, yata yata. No need to repeat yourself, heard you before multiple times)
1
u/Otterbotanical Aug 21 '26
It is his responsibility to not be a dick, that's all. He is picking times when he has not been hurt or attacked by anyone, to attack others. There is no reason for him to be doing what he's doing here, all of them are now aware of his boundaries and respecting them. All he has to do is not be a dick, but he is choosing to anyway.
People who want to improve, to get closer to people socially, who want to get out from under their shitty past, will at least make efforts to reconnect with others. When I was told by my friends growing up that I was getting loud, obnoxious, or interrupting people, I felt bad and wanted to do better.
The milky does not exhibit any desire to "come back" from the emotional place he's in. He seems to want to stay there, and stomp in the faces of anyone that isn't perfectly neutral towards him.
And sometimes that's okay, if you got a co-worker that does not want to be friends, makes it clear that you need to back the fuck off, then hey! You can just leave them alone, never interact with them. Respect their wishes and stay the hell out of their way. None of them have that option right now though. The milky does not deserve to make everyone else's life hell just because he's hurt.
I take solace in the fact that everyone else here is extremely tired of his antics.
1
u/Key_Kaleidoscope6162 Aug 22 '26
Teddy still did not apologise for calling orion a runt by the way, Teddy also started it by again, calling him a runt.
I hate how Teddy gets to be a dick to orion first and everyone ignores it.
0
u/Otterbotanical Aug 22 '26
Uh, Teddy was not "being a dick" what the hell?? Orion was the one who had an outburst. He was going on and on about being "clearly not one of you". When Teddy just asked "what do you mean by that?", Orion stopped everyone in their tracks to make a big deal out of it.
Go back and read it, he meant ZERO offense. Teddy was saying "I thought it were a small one of us?"
The two things are not the same. Teddy meant no offense, and sure, he deserves to apologize to Orion, but Orion is now, long after the fact, telling Teddy that he wants him dead.
Tell me how we should be soft and accommodating for Orion while he's just shitting all over Teddy.

After many hours and passing out pretty early today… I can finally read this to see why so many people were stressing and hating on Orion for this one ;-; that’s a bit fucking close with a bit too much dismissal/hate… And Trauma… Poor lil guy, “I would leave you to rot.” Truly some cruel words to be told…
I hope everything goes well, but I also hope that Orion gets bitch slapped by Teddy then a big hug… 1 for the comments 1 for the trauma. Not really effective at solving or helping anything but would show sincerity.(Can’t wait till we unwrap the bag that is Orions issues)
“Do cease your mewling. I cannot hear the stone.”
That line is way too funny to me XD(I am going to try so damn hard the next time one of my friends yaps a bit too much to use something like that XD[All in jest of course :p] but many games with mining :3)
Also, even though your friend won’t see it, tell them I say thanks and appreciate them helping you(Kinda sounds silly for me to say but I don’t think your friends helping you can ever be appreciated enough even if it’s just getting through the steps[Which is still important] so have a doodle for them >:3)

(Ps. I used the wrong brush but stuck with it so eh)
Thanks for another comic part >:3 with some neat and cool perspectives :]

Too bad repeating words to someone you don't like in a high stress situation is not a good idea.

u/Mikel_S Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
I don't think Orion was mistreated by the scientists. In fact, he seems to recall his time up there fondly. He was mistreated by another group of expies. Likely a group thay was more actively hostile to their human masters and detested Orion for his intellect (and maybe his attitude, even if it wasn't as bad back then). His stature would just be an easy excuse.
He seems to be recalling another group abandoning him, leaving him behind, judging him harshly for his stature, "leave them to rot." clearly one person talking to another about leaving Orion.

13
u/LG3V Aug 21 '26
The grey and black is basically their current mental darkness, Teddy is very stressed out and feels really guilty for trapping the others, and Orion is not helping with his snarky and mean remarks
6
u/Runic_oddity Aug 21 '26
Seems it's the artists way of depicting negative emotions, fear, anxiety, sadness, depression and otherwise general emotional pain... The blacker and bigger, the worse the emotional state.
Teddy here is a very emotional boi, feeling guilty for getting stuck and risking his friend's life, fear of being injured by the plan to get him out, hurt and angry at Orion because he a bitch. It's an understandable reaction given the situation. But he's being very brave. And we're all very proud of our boy

I know it’s very much an asshole thing to say that (or Orion) but like, man just prioritizes survival over connection like any sane person (who doesn’t have much morals mind you) would. So I see where the glorified white highlighter comes from.

I believe the gray text is the scientists having previously been talking to one another and telling another to leave Orion to rot as they have no use for a “runt”, or a group of Orion’s fellow milkies which he could have looked up to and now feels he has to perform just as well as they had but in reality they heavily doubt themselves.

Man Orions got some demons, huh? Like I know its no excuse to be a dick but still. Poor guy, I hope he gets his big emotional breakthrough moment soon.

First off, congrats for the 80 pages! :D I see a lot of people roasting Orion because they're a prick (Orion, not the people lol). And yes, they are. But that makes me like them even more. Orion adds complexity and is a counterpoint to this positive and friendly group. And, even if unwillingly, they're helping Teddy. Can't wait to see what horrors happened at the lab :)

I might be the only one left on team Orion, while he's a grade A hater, he's been completely valid in all of his spite thus far. Sometimes it's okay to hold grudges.l, but I'm sure we'll get to see him grow and change his attitude.
Or the cave can collapse and kill half the cast next release, that would for sure be a twist 😂

Those mental cracks on Orion...
He is about to lose it. I wonder if he'll accept a hug after all this

Orion better lose his entire arm for this one. I can not wait to see him finally broken down into a pile of quivering snot 😮💨

Stringbean you must swing as hard as physically possible
shatter Orions hand

Man it would sure suck if the entire time there was a shade crawler on the other side that is about to bite Teddy's leg or something causing their head to shoot up from the pain making Stringbean accidentally clobber them

Next part’s about to be ether another happy ending or the most sad part in the entire comic
(Also is that bitch Orion also saying that he would leave them too in the gray text?)
