MIDNIGHT FANTASTIC FOUR #1

18

u/Appropriate-Map-3652 Scott Pilgrim 11d ago

Quite enjoyed this, but I'm not vibing with the art at all.

26

u/NCBaddict 11d ago

Opposite here. Dug Kev Walker’s art, but Percy’s pacing felt slow. The only hook was Doom’s identity since that was unexpected.

6

u/Appropriate-Map-3652 Scott Pilgrim 11d ago

It's technincally impressive, but I just don't know if it fits a cosmic horror book.

I dig slow pacing too, but it has to stick the landing further down the line to be worth it. In a year or so I'll either love it or hate it.

14

u/eddie_vercetti 10d ago

That's Percy really, he writes for the trades.

7

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

😭 Percy writes for many trades lmfao sometimes things get drawn out for far too long

3

u/BlackJimmy88 9d ago

I feel like all modern comics are written for the TPB. I think the only individual issue in recent memory that didn't leave me with that frustrated feeling of having a story cut off midway was the most recent Absolute Green Lantern issue, and that's only because that's a self contained info dump issue.

2

u/zoogenhiemer 9d ago

I’ve been bouncing between loving and hating the art. Some of it I think works really well, but sometimes reed looks ridiculously cartoonish

-12

u/Cannon_Graves 10d ago

Kev Walker is on my list of artists who I try to avoid. But in the bright side, he's leagues better than the person that did Midnight Spider-Man. That may be the worst art in a high profile big 2 comic...ever?

12

u/willdrown 10d ago

That may be the worst art in a high profile big 2 comic...ever?

You might not like the style but this is a hell of a statement to make when Greg Land is still getting work. I think neither Walker nor the artist on MSM are the right fits for horror but I'll give it time.

1

u/JLAsuperdude Metron 4d ago

No, in recent memory, that goes to Absolute Green Lantern. Though early 2000s Marvel had some shockingly rough art.

31

u/JingoboStoplight4887 11d ago

I like that we get to see how the Fantastic Four came to be. This includes Reed Richards becoming an NYIT professor who recruited Victor Von Doom (who is his research assistant) to open the Negative Zone (which resulted in Victor being mutated) and Reed being recruited by Sue and Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm so that they can tell him to open the Negative Zone. Overall, this comic is good and off to a good start.

34

u/ziggurqt 10d ago

I wish people would stop downvoting you. It's not like there's an abundance of activity on these threads anyway.

23

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

Yeah they've dropped their reviews like that for ages lol. Idk if the recent activity on reddit has people assuming they're a bot.

14

u/PEWDS_IS_A_NAZI 9d ago

Their 'reviews' are all two-sentence plot summaries prepended with 'I like that...' and written like a particularly dull middle school book report.

They're not interesting or insightful, and the only utility I can see for them is as entries in an index of single issue summaries to be retrieved later by automated processes.

3

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

They're also unmarked spoilers delivered in such a dry way that you don't even notice you're being spoiled until it's too late. And yes, I know it's a spoiler thread. I don't care, it's still annoying.

5

u/DOuGHtOp 2d ago

Some autistic people struggle to express why they feel a certain way about something and just end up recapping that thing instead

I don't know the guy personally, but it's possible that's what's going on. I'm an autist but fortunately I don't have that issue

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 2d ago

Yeah I like the dude's recap reviews. It's only in recent months I've seen their reviews catching downvotes.

3

u/trailingby7 We're all puppets, Laurie. 2d ago

I can confirm they are not a bot

3

u/ptbreakeven 2d ago

Seconded. And there’s space for everyone here.

1

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

Definitely the weakest by far of the three Midnight #1s, although it definitely has more hooks for me than Spider-Man for example. Reed's apparent schizophrenia is super compelling, and Sue being Elon Musk is WILD. Mostly, I wish it had done more than the beginnings of a start of an initiation of a setup.

16

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #19

25

u/Bassaluna 10d ago

the secret 13th issue of absolute martian manhunter

3

u/tayung2013 10d ago

As someone who loved AMM but isn’t reading AGL, can you elaborate on that? Do I need to start picking up this title to see what John is up to?

14

u/Bassaluna 10d ago

this issue specifically explains the origin of something that camp introduced in the last issue of martian manhunter. john hasn't shown up so far, but now it could be possible

0

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

I remain skeptical that Ewing will handle that with as much creativity as Camp and Rodriguez did on AMM lol. John's definitely showing up eventually though.

13

u/Bassaluna 10d ago

Before camp/rodriguez there was ewing/rodriguez. It won't be the same, but i trust ewing with the madness of the martian

10

u/cuttups Invincible 10d ago

Wild thing to say about one of the best modern comic writers.

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

I've been reading Ewing for over a decade and his writing hasn't hit the way it used to for quite some time (for me).

10

u/BarcelonaLion 10d ago

Why is no one talking about....FREAKING KYLE RAYNER IS FINALLY BEING INTRODUCED IN THE ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE????

I wonder how he will look like and why is he joining with Task force X?

1

u/ChimpSlut 6d ago

they introduced like 5 other characters in the same issue so it just got lost in the mess

1

u/ChimpSlut 7d ago

I found this issue dense and difficult to understand

13

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

DEMON #1

13

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

Artwork is really giving me Mignola vibes, which is a great fit tbh. I know next to nothing about the character, so no idea if the story makes any sense but it seems like a good mystical mystery thing that's getting set up here, with Morgana as the big bad? Also Baby Merlin!

7

u/gosukhaos 10d ago

Not surprising, Harren penciled the early issues of BPRD and a bunch of other Mignola stuff

4

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

Oh! That makes a lot of sense. Makes him a good fit I reckon.

9

u/jim__nightshade Batman of Zue-En-Arrh 10d ago

Absolutely adored this.

Read DC for a good 20 years at this point but never really had much interaction of the demon outside of the odd episode of JLU but this really resonated with me.

I think it's because, as a other poster said, I got massive Hellboy vibes from it but just hook this into my veins.

2

u/blankedboy 10d ago

Garth Ennis/John McCrea did a very good (but very different to this) run on The Demon years ago. I really enjoyed it. If you're a fan of either of those two creators it's definitely worth checking out.

3

u/upgrayedd69 Larfleeze 10d ago

Excellent. I really enjoyed this and am glad I ended up getting it

3

u/side_b_sax_demon 8d ago

That was a lot of fun. I know they said it was going to be Kirby-inspired but I wasn't expecting it to be THAT Kirby-inspired, to the point where it's recreating specific panels and bringing back characters like the Iron Duke!

As for the rhyming, I wonder if it's going to be like the Kirby run where characters only use rhymes when they're casting spells?

11

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #24

18

u/k0bra3eak 10d ago

Man that was a good issue, Clark and John have pretty great chemistry. I also adore how Supes treats his villains. Think this fundamentally proves that Absolute isn't just dark and edgy, but rather just putting the heroes in fundamentally different lives and seeing if they still hold on to their core.

Extra bonus Lana and Clark yes please

6

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 10d ago

Feels like a bit of a cooldown that gets into the characters more.  This is still Superman, wanting to help people, even monsters.  It’s a great jumping on point for the character.

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

I got that feeling as well. I think it's going to really hit the fan next issue.

2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 11d ago

I like that Clark showed Irons all of Smallville and the Fortress of Solitude, with Irons telling Clark that he was in Metropolis because he wanted to kill Ra’s Al Ghul for ruining his life before he helped Clark defeat King Shazam. I also like that we get to see Clark and Irons defeat and save the Atomic Skull and Brainiac, with Clark showing Irons a tour in Smallville and Irons introducing Clark to his mother. I like and enjoy their friendship, and I hope that we get to see them work together to save the world and defeat Brainiac. Overall, this comic is great!

10

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

DEADMAN #5

5

u/JingoboStoplight4887 10d ago

I like that Boston traveled to a possible future and learned about the Gr33n and met the Photon Stranger and future counterparts of the Justice League before he returned to his time and encountered someone. Overall, this comic he good.

11

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

JONAH HEX AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH #1

7

u/FlowerRoomLord 9d ago

You can tell this is Michael Walsh's passion project. Great art and the story told within the first issue is compelling enough that I think I'll check out the rest of the first arc.

2

u/Lsad12 8d ago

Did not have this one in my list, but man this is good! Great art, story catches you really fast. I may keep going on with this one

1

u/arduit 8d ago

Yo shoutout to Toni-Marie Griffin on colors, this book was gorgeous. Like, Michael Walsh is killing it but Griffin just adds the icing. If Demon hadn't come out this week, I'd say its my favorite art this week

1

u/droopymaroon 7d ago

Picked this up on a whim after hearing positive things and really liked it! Will be adding to my pull list for sure

MIDNIGHT X-MEN #1

35

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

This was the Midnight title that I enjoyed the most. Solid artwork from Della Fonte and Hesli, the use of light and dark added a lot for me. Hickman once again does a great job of introducing the various forces at odds in this world, but the arrival of Cyclops and the reveal of Hope were the moments that stood out most to me. Still skeptical of the vampire angle but this is an intriguing start.

11

u/trawlse 10d ago

Yeah the use of light and dark really made the world feel shadowy and oppressive, almost suffocating. And the arrival of Storm into the garden and the way the colors shift was particularly ominous and cool.

8

u/SonofaSpurrier Spider-Man Expert 9d ago

Oooo SHE made it dark, on first read i thought he just stood there until dark 😶

6

u/trawlse 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah, me too! If you think about it, being able to change the weather is one of the main powers that would be useful for a vampire. It's also neat that the flower wilts.

Also, it makes me think about Sunspot. He isn't just solar powered, he also turns into a human-shaped black hole. He removes light. That's a very interesting combination in a vampire context.

3

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

Oh I still think he waited until nightfall. Even with the power to make clouds, this felt like actual night colors, not just clouds obscuring the sun.

1

u/SonofaSpurrier Spider-Man Expert 8d ago

I don’t think so, on re-read it goes straight from light out to dark

3

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

I mean, that's a standard way of depicting passage of time. The same panel in different colors. It's more elegant than adding a "Later" at the top corner of the panel. Also, again, Storm's powers can't make day into night and the coloring of that part is very clearly night time.

16

u/NCBaddict 11d ago

Love how the data page laid the groundwork for the beatdown later in the issue. I’m not in love with how the vampire aspect really muddles the mutant metaphor, but Hickman at least seems to have thought thru the execution.

The final scene provided real intrigue. There’s no way that XXXXXX would be cool with whatever XXXXXX agreed to given how he clearly suffered in the past.

2

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

It weirdly seems like mutants on their own are less hated in this world than in 616.

16

u/ColdPlayCam 10d ago

I am hooked and happy to be back onboard with an intriguing Hickman story.
I’m getting the impression that these new Empyres are a black mirror reflection of the krakoan ethnostate idea. Now, in this horror scenario, the moral kinship with humanity is malleable as fuck and only hardcore OGs (like this amazing Cyclops) will stand in the way of injustice.
Great art, very sleek overall. Perfect for this month.

40

u/LEVITIKUZ 10d ago

As someone who likes the Ultimate books & love the Absolute books (more of a DC fan tbh); I think the 3 Midnight books are good but I don’t think any of them have that punch out the gate like the first 3 Absolute DC books did. FF & Spider-Man are origin focused while Absolute went ‘HERES BATMAN, HERES WONDER WOMAN, HERES SUPERMAN, WORRY ABOUT ORIGINS LATER’

I say that because this is probably why I liked X-Men the most out of the 3 despite being my least interested one

2

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

Agreed that none had the punch of the 3 first issues in the Absolute universe, but of the three setups I also liked this one the most.

12

u/Lsad12 10d ago

Cyclops going bald makes him look really badass. The vampire thing did not catch me yet, but I guess they will work it out in the next issues

19

u/clarkision Iceman 11d ago

I actually really enjoyed this reimagining of the X-Men. The lore changed and subtle call backs were great and the art if phenomenal! I’m excited for more!

6

u/zoogenhiemer 9d ago

This was my favorite of the three midnight titles so far, I like the vampire/religion angle and hope they lean harder into the religious themes

3

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

I mean... It's Hickman. I will never not love a Hickman-written first issue. There's so much incredible character work, so much worldbuilding and setup. The scene between Storm and Kurt was beautiful both on a visual and emotional level too.

It suffers from the same issue as all the other Midnight #1s of course, which is that it's ONLY setup. I get the approach, but I don't know if Marvel currently has the trust credit with fans, after pointlessly killing the Ultimate universe (and Hickman brings up memories of what they did with Krakoa), but I am gullible enough to hope for the best.

2

u/d-fakkr 7d ago

Is it just me or I didn't enjoyed the issue? Don't get me wrong i read it twice just to understand the story but beyond the fact half of the X-Men are vampires, this is just another classic vampire history. There's hints and small details Hickman is leaving, but at least, this issue didn't excited me, ot at least to motivate me to follow up. As a rival to the absolute universe, I think the editors didn't catch why the AU is so good.

Still, I'll wait for the rest of the issues.

3

u/BarcelonaLion 9d ago

Can someone explain to me which side is each group in this new x-men universe?

Like are all mutants "empyres" or just a select few? is Cyclops in the same group as Magneto and is he a empyre? is it multiple groups of mutants fighting each other alongside the normal vampires? I am so confused lol

3

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

It's multiple factions. There's clearly some kind of agreement between Magneto's mutants and Storm's empyres. Cyclops seems to be a rogue agent, and Kurt is also his own entity, who clearly has ties with multiple factions.

And the fact that the cardinal was Stryker tells me that we'll have some anti-mutant agenda down the line.

8

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

WPL RESULTS

15

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

Very curious to see reactions to Marvel's Midnight launch this week. Horror is not typically all that appealing to me, but all three books are interesting enough to bring me back for another issue. Let's use this space to discuss the Midnight line in general.

9

u/tayung2013 11d ago

Even as #1 issues, I’m surprised to see them take the top spots over Batman and the Absolute books. Now if it was Absolute Batman I’m sure it wouldn’t be the case but even so, I’ll be interested to see if any of these have the staying power.

7

u/mighty3mperor Union Jack 10d ago

They've sold over a million copies between them, so they were always going to place high. What will be interesting is to see how those numbers drop.

6

u/eddie_vercetti 10d ago

That's the question, first issues having a muted reaction is very oh dear.

5

u/mighty3mperor Union Jack 10d ago

Not sure about muted, the feedback seems decent, with MSM coming out on top, followed by MXM and MFF a bit behind, but with its fans:

10

u/eddie_vercetti 10d ago

Vs Absolute though which people praised Ab WW/Bats.

We will see if this line stands though only because Marvel is Marvel.

7

u/mighty3mperor Union Jack 10d ago

And Absolute Martian Manhunter, which, along with ABM, won a lot of awards. I don't see any Midnight titles doing that unless they pull something spectacular out of the bag. Even then, ABM, AWW and AMM really went big on the art, as well as the writing and the Midnight titles art is all good but it doesn't have the same wow factor. Still... early days.

3

u/ptbreakeven 10d ago

First issues certainly draw attention, and Marvel put a lot of energy into the Midnight line so I expected a lot of interest here. The creative teams also include some community favorites which has a big impact on WPL numbers. Batman being part of a crossover may have had an effect but the number of pulls is right around where the last few issues have landed.

The staying power of the Midnight books should be interesting to watch. I’m certainly sticking with each of them for another issue (probably a few more) but there’s normally a fall off as series continue (of course DC’s Absolute line may not be strictly following that trend).

6

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

Not super shocking to me. Hickman writing more X-Men and Spider-Man that's not mainline continuity are a big draw I reckon, even if there was a lot of doom and gloom around the line on here.

1

u/TheeHeadAche Henry Pym 10d ago

Surprisingly, AWW overtook ABM two weeks ago for this thread . Both MSM and MXM had more pulls than ABM 24

1

u/Prof-Ponderosa 10d ago

It’s a miss for me

7

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

BATMAN #14

12

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

I love the banter between Batman and Verity, she's a fun addition to the cast so far. Also as someone who hasn't really been paying much attention to Batman comics for a while, the whole Freeze family situation greatly confused me. Nora's out of the ice but now has the same affliction as Victor? And somehow Luthor was involved in all this mess?

Either way, I'm still really enjoying Fraction's run but I don't particularly care for Bad Seeds if I'm honest. Maybe because it feels like it's the 5th or 6th time in a short while that a super villain takes over Gotham for a couple months.

Also lol at Boom Tube Broadband. Is Batman stealing Darkseid's internet now? :'D

5

u/k0bra3eak 10d ago

Boomtubes are New God tech so not just Darkseid, although I find it funnier to imagine this is another reason on Darkseid's list to fuck with Absolute Bats

3

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

4 new eldritch horror enemies for Absolute Batman, coming right up!

2

u/gosukhaos 10d ago

The latest development with Nora I can recall was her being cured in the backups of the Ram V Tec run and kind of reneging Freeze and walking away. Freeze was part of the last arc but was mostly fine

5

u/JingoboStoplight4887 10d ago

I like that Bruce and Verity get to talk about the backstories of Victor and Nora freeze before Bruce saved Victor’s life and convinced Nora to save Gotham with Victor’s help while Verity fought criminals in Gotham. Overall, this comic is great!

1

u/mseank 4d ago

I like how they made the thieves cops lol. Otherwise I would have felt for them more.

6

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1

4

u/Lsad12 10d ago

Although I've enjoyed the stories told, I was expecting it to be more thrilling and somehow see those kids a little bit more frightned into the woods. The art and writting are both amazing

23

u/ptbreakeven 11d ago

MIDNIGHT SPIDER-MAN #1

51

u/AllCity_King 10d ago

Love the angle on how Peter makes his “great responsibility” mistake.

Spoilers ahead I think the angle that Peter goes against his morals to work for Oscorp, which in turn gets Ben killed by association, is interesting. It’s not as black and white as failing to stop a criminal. It speaks to a more moral basis of responsibility rather than blunt action. And he’s forced to combine with and wear the creature that killed Ben because he fell right into Oscorps trap by bringing it home.

11

u/Osackpo 10d ago

Yup, that my was favorite part of the book. Was really curious what they would do for the origin.

2

u/SonofaSpurrier Spider-Man Expert 9d ago

Do we think the spider was intentional sent to Peter or an accident?

6

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

Definitely an accident. They were trying to get rid of him and find the spider.

2

u/SonofaSpurrier Spider-Man Expert 8d ago

Oooo, good call

26

u/Appropriate-Map-3652 Scott Pilgrim 11d ago

I've seen a lot of doom and gloom about this on here from people who had advanced copies, but I thought it was a fine first issue. Interested to see where it goes, but not blown away.

43

u/Mean_Plum_606 11d ago

I did not expect the body horror to be so visceral. That scene with Zinkievitch made me slightly nauseous. So thumbs up I think?

19

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

It's that it kept going.

2

u/sdtsanev 8d ago

This part.

9

u/worditsbird 10d ago

them laughing at him crying while dying tore me up a bit

4

u/clarkision Iceman 9d ago

Same! That made it especially dark and gruesome.

26

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

Interesting first issue.

It feels very decompressed though less so than Midnight Fantastic Four. I have a feeling this book will have a far greater atmosphere of misery seeping through all aspects of it than Midnight X-Men or Midnight Fantastic Four. I just hope PKJ doesn't plunge it into borderline torture porn purely because it's a horror comic without anything meaningful to say because there's quite a few comics I can turn to that carry a similar message now and will be written better and with more nuance based on this issue and my experience with some of PKJ's previous work.

Overall 3.5 out of 5 for me. I think this and F4 could have used larger first issues especially if this is Marvel's new AU initiative they're pursuing and I hope the first 3 issues don't all end up being one issue that got spread across three. A GODS sized 60 page first issue would have suited this and F4 well to really give these a solid start. No notes on Scie Tronc's art. It makes for a very welcome change from the usual house style I've become accustomed to.

Lmao at the scenes with Felicia in the office. PKJ definitely knows how to bait readers.

8

u/TheeHeadAche Henry Pym 10d ago

Decompressed is interesting. I like the pace personally. What part do you feel could have done better with more brevity, or which parts should have been cut or cleaned up to make it feel less decompressed?

7

u/FlowerRoomLord 10d ago

It's hard to say. On a second reading and knowing what's coming, it's a better read but still lacking something. My decompression issue feels like it's got less to do with this issue's content and rather that I felt there needed to be a bit more where it ended.

The best example I can give right now while I'm busy at work and my brain is frazzled is the third Hobbit movie opening with Smaug's attack and eventual death. It was a sequence I always felt should have come at the end of Desolation of Smaug rather than serve as the opening to Battle of the Five Armies.

I could be wrong in a month but I have a feeling based on my experiences with PKJ's work that at least some of the next issue will feel like it could have been part of issue one to give Midnight Spider-Man a more explosive opening.

The rest of the issue is fine, I think, and PKJ and Scie Tronc did well overall. Other than decompressed sensation I'm getting, I felt like some of the writing is a bit less sophisticated compared to the topics and themes PKJ is taking aim at which is the reason it's got a 3.5 for me. I have my doubts as to whether or not he'll be able to hit the right buttons with the right grace and rhythm the narrative needs but it's only issue one and he could change my mind as time passes.

11

u/NicoleIlieva 10d ago

Kinda in the middle with this. The writing was a bit off for me, but I'm interested to see what is the deal with Felicia and Pym.

9

u/oomoepoo 10d ago

Decent first issue, gleefully gory and social commentary with all the subtlety of a jackhammer. Also wow, they're really playing up Felicia's sex appeal here :')

I'm not entirely convinced yet but at least curious enough to see it through for another issue or two.

9

u/Lsad12 10d ago

Solid first issue imo even tho I thought it was a little bit fast paced. I really enjoyed the art and the background on Peter's chilhood for him to become spidey

5

u/Osackpo 10d ago

Really enjoyed this, much more that I thought or was hoping too. Absoutly loved the new take on the origin, really is a great modern twist that looks at morals more than action.

Very solid 4.8/5. Cannot wait for the next issue.

5

u/aokon 10d ago

Overall I really liked it especially the art. I don't love the body horror stuff but I can appreciate that it's done well. With the story I'm interested to see how much good they can show in the world. This could be really good if they integrate that part well. I'm still not sure if I'll add this to my pull list but definitely an interesting start if nothing else.

Are we expecting Peter to mutate into a larger man or is that possibly just unrelated variant covers?

I’m expecting Peter to mutate into a flesh spider at this point, they’ve already leaned so hard into the body horror

I’m kind of scared uncle Ben is still in there

I really like the art but I just felt the comic was a little mean :/ I guess since it's horror it's to be expected but maybe this just isn't for me.

Really good first issue. Really liking the body horror aspect so far and a lot of it is pretty disgusting and it's great. Liked Peter's dynamic with Ben in this, and while I knew he was definitely going to die it was sad to see him die this issue. I like that Peter went against his morals to work for Oscorp thinking he can change it from within, only for that evil to come and kill Ben and turn Peter into a monster. Excited for the rest of this book.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this one, but it's more negative than positive. I was excited for it and I will still read further, but it felt torture-porny and mean-spirited in a way I don't vibe with. For one thing, I will never be ok with depictions of cat murder in art. There's this really obnoxious unspoken agreement that it's ok to do violence on cats in art in a way that's not ok when it's dogs, and I really hated that.

Then there's the Zinkievitch scene... It was so awful and genuinely tragic that for the first time in my adult life I had to put down a Marvel comic book, go to bed, and pick it up the next day. How long it kept going, the visceral detail, the pleading for his daughter, the gross mockery, and then the awful report with the (frankly 100% unnecessary) pedophilic aside... I don't know, I don't respond well to torture porn and cruelty for cruelty's sake. It doesn't make it "darker" to me, it makes it edgelordy and self-indulgent in a disgustingly immature way.

That said, the Peter parts were great. I like his moral flexibility and I'm interested to see where it takes him. What I'm curious about is, will he be able to transform/pretend to be normal? Because if not, then this is a Spider-Man who won't have a human alter-ego at all and that's a super different dynamic from the typical versions of the character and will be interesting to see.

Not sure I vibe with the art just yet, the horror scenes were great but the rest not so much

Far as the rest goes it was ok, just your boilerplate Spider-Man origin with some twists, didn't particularly blow me away

I am interested in this deconstruction of the Spider-Man mythos but honestly this first issue the body horror felt out of place with the whole vibe. I was anticipating a whole horror thing and it was really cutesy most of the time. Maybe it will settle into itself.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but this just felt overly edgy to me. The horror was not so much scary as it was mean-spirited. How many times do you have to show the rotting cat?

I'm still going to give it a fair shot, at least through to the end of the year. I think what is going to make it or break it for me is how Peter's character changes as he gets his "powers."

This version of Peter is just so incredibly unlikeable so far. But I guess even in the main Marvel universe, he was kind of immature and irresponsible before Uncle Ben died so it's kind of a commonality.

I think the funny thing with the comparisons people made pre-release to the Absolute universe, it actually reminds me a lot more of the alt-universe Batman origin stories from Dark Knights. Stuff like Dawnbreaker, etc. But those were one shots so it'll be interesting to see how an extended run of a similar concept will go.

I like that we get to see the origins of how Peter Parker became Spider-Man. This includes Peter spending his eighteenth birthday with his Uncle Ben, working as a research assistant, getting a job offer from Felicia Hardy and Oscorp, and learning that power makes monsters every time after being affected by a spider (with Uncle Ben trying to call Peter after he was bitten by a spider). Overall, this comic is amazing and off to a good start.

I don’t know why this is getting downvoted but I for one look forward to these

The art in this is so unbelievably terrible that I'm not sure I'm even going to read it. If this makes it a year I'll be shocked. Yikes

BATGIRL #24

4

u/JingoboStoplight4887 10d ago

I like that Cassandra was able to defeat the plant monsters and send Mimi to a hospital, while Tenji and Jaya were able to protect the people of the restaurant from the plant monsters. Overall, this comic is good.

SUPERMAN THE STRANGER #2

5

u/JingoboStoplight4887 10d ago

I like that Clark spent five months being active as Superman while managing his job as a janitor at the Daily Planet. This includes him meeting a woman named Hazel, convincing someone to not tear town people’s homes, and having a dream about him ruling the people. Also, Lex using Project Vulcan to make the US the only superpower. Overall, this comic is excellent.

CROWBOUND #2

Alright, we have our plot. Mom makes pact with a demon(?) to get her daughter back while something that might be related to the first demon chases after her. I'm down. And the watercolors are gorgeous as always.

DCS QUOTH THE RAVEN WHATEVER #1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 10d ago

For the Raven backup, I like that Raven and Constantine worked together to defeat Bromm Stikk. Overall, this backup is fine.

For the Deadman backup, I like that Boston and the twins Orwin and Cynthia were able to humor the babysitter Becky before they get to celebrate Halloween together. Overall, this backup is good.

For the Vixen backup, I find it interesting that Mari wanted to be used more from the Justice League before she encountered Anansi, who called her out on not being used in many stories. Overall, this backup is interesting and meta.

For the Dr. Thirteen and Traci Thirteen backup, I find it interesting that Dr. Thirteen and Traci went to a house and learned about the ghost of Marguerite Henceworth’s mom with Dr. Thirteen believing that Marguerite killed her grandmother and Traci knowing the truth and that her fear is that her father would be wrong about not believing in the supernatural. Overall, this backup is good.

For the Superboy-Prime backup, I like that we get to see CK spend his Halloween working at the comic book store, with him dressing up as Constantine and Witchfire dressing up as Zatanna. Also, CK and Witchfire defeating demons. Overall, this backup is good.

For the Catwoman backup, I find it interesting that Selina stole something from the museum before an ancient cat summoned her to revive him. Overall, this backup is good.

For the Swamp Thing backup, I like that Swamp Thing encountered someone, who decided to stay away from him. Overall, this is a good backup.

For the Zatanna and Constantine backup, I like that Zatanna and Constantine went to Losthall Manor and leaned that it involves curses and ghosts because it shows that the sorceress cursed two lovers to be together forever before they decided to put them to rest. Overall, this backup is good.

Absolutely LOVE this cover. Could make a sick T-shirt

With some slight alterations

I enjoyed the artwork and feel it fits the darker setting. The story though is where I have issues. I loved Hickman’s X-Men run so I’m disappointed that this is another vampire vs Marvel characters story like we saw in Blood Hunt. I was hoping for something more interesting and innovative under the Midnight line but instead this is a rehash of what we’ve seen before.

2

u/Status-General8422 9d ago

It's literally nothing like Blood Hunt at all

0

u/NervousSpinach4763 6d ago

It’s a vampire story set in the Marvel universe.

u/Status-General8422 6d ago

So is it also just like World War Hulk, since it's a superhero story set in the Marvel universe?

Ok so they clearly just made Reed look exactly like John Krasinski, right?
