It wasn't only conservatives. The invasion of Afghanistan, Patriot Act, and formation of the TSA had almost complete bipartisan support. The US wanted blood. It wasn't until the invasion of Iraq that people started going "hey, wait a minute".

Yes, but it was thoroughly established that the American people were lied to about WMD and the locations of radical groups. This is why the GOP were punished by losing in a landslide in the '06 midterms and partially why Obama was elected. Then of course the GOP gerrymandering the hell out of everything and here we are.
