Forget where I saw it, but someone put forth a theory it's to discourage business travelers from sharing rooms

It would suck for a traveling family, though. The parents would be fine seeing each other, nothing they haven't seen before, but with kids there would be some serious issues.

I'm pretty sure a lot of kids everywhere wouldn't be comfortable watching their parents use the toilet.

I actually don't know how common this is cross culturally. even in america it's not universal
