Forget where I saw it, but someone put forth a theory it's to discourage business travelers from sharing rooms

377

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

It would suck for a traveling family, though. The parents would be fine seeing each other, nothing they haven't seen before, but with kids there would be some serious issues.

300

u/GreatStateOfSadness 20d ago

It can also be to encourage families to book multiple rooms as well.

Whatever it takes to increase room bookings without getting customers to start looking elsewhere.

214

u/ScienceMajestic8716 20d ago

It encouraged me to leave a 1 star review and never use that hotel again.

31

u/bobs_monkey 20d ago

You're also in the demographic that will make time to say something, most will just forget about it

3

u/Yorick257 19d ago

The more it sucks, the more likely you're to say something. So, if people are disturbed by this shit, they will try to write a complaint.

The problem might be with something like Booking because they often ask very specific questions.

1

u/DukeOfGeek DukeOfGeek 20d ago

Stuff like this and a bunch more encouraged me to just stop using the "hospitality industry" period.

4

u/bobs_monkey 20d ago

Easy to say when you're not required to travel for work.

Also why I really want a travel trailer.

3

u/DukeOfGeek DukeOfGeek 20d ago

I do travel for work I just don't use hotels. I'm not going to say what I do use because I don't feel like getting harassed by keyword detectors.

0

u/Amelaclya1 20d ago

If more hotels start doing this, they are just going to shove customers back into the arms of Airbnb.

5

u/Neveronlyadream 20d ago

Maybe. Airbnb also has its problems.

It's going to be ping pong, though. If Airbnb has another big scandal with someone having hidden cameras in the space, people will go back to hotels. If the hotels keep doing shit like this, they'll risk Airbnb. Rinse and repeat.

82

u/nixcamic 20d ago

Yeah cause you should have to choose between your 9 year old seeing you naked or sleeping by themselves in a hotel room.

14

u/No-Boysenberry7835 20d ago

Just get the junior suite instead of a basic room s/

6

u/Forward_Writer6604 19d ago

yeah, but, WTF is the problem about your own Kids seeing you naked?

11

u/In7el3ct 19d ago

My thoughts exactly. My family always used our hot tub in the nude, bathrooms were only locked when going #2, etc. It normalizes and desexualizes the human body in a healthy way. I feel like the US's puritanical culture honestly causes more harm than good with this one.

5

u/yeaman17 19d ago

The puritanical culture is still way to prevalent in some areas of the U.S. I've straight up met guys that started getting weirded out about other people being close to their siblings and holding hands with them/friends. I think their minds are so warped from being so deprived of human touch

3

u/HHSOCCER28 19d ago

My daughter is adopted and has severe ptsd from abuse at bio home. Her seeing us naked would be extremely triggering. Any hotel like this would be an immediate no.

3

u/mentalissuelol 19d ago

It’s just a cultural difference. I haven’t seen my parents naked since I was so young that I had no qualms about barging into bathrooms where people are showering, and my parents weren’t even okay with that, they’d cover up as fast as possible and make me leave. That’s pretty standard in America. If you’re older than like 3 you don’t see your parents naked.

2

u/Soggy_Candidate5072 19d ago

Is this a real thing? Do parents actually walk around naked in front of their kids?

1

u/Forward_Writer6604 18d ago

YES

1

u/Soggy_Candidate5072 18d ago

I was raised in a very conservative Muslim family so this baffles me. Like completely letting everything hang out, not even wearing your underwear?

3

u/HighlightEntire4412 19d ago

What's wrong with your 9 year old seeing you naked? You don't wash your children?

If you really are such a prude, pack a swimsuit!

1

u/Imaginary-Goal-9443 20d ago

Hotel rooms can have connecting doors you know. And most wont' accept this as a reason to book seperate rooms, and will instead book elsewhere.

40

u/its_yer_dad 20d ago

I moved to a different hotel. Same price, no nonsense.

1

u/goldenopal42 20d ago

Yes. But also they do want certain demographics of customers to look elsewhere. It’s more difficult and expensive to cater to everyone at the same time - sometimes impossible.

For example, business travelers don’t want to hear kids running and yelling down the hallways. Families don’t want a bunch of intoxicated adults flirting with each other at the pool during happy hour.

1

u/Alt4816 19d ago

Whatever it takes to increase room bookings without getting customers to start looking elsewhere.

People will only know to book multiple rooms at a specific hotel if they know it has this issue with the bathrooms. If they know it has this issue then why wouldn't they book another hotel?

1

u/Jazzspur 19d ago edited 19d ago

yeaaahh my family booked 2 rooms when we travelled but I dont wanna see my brother naked in the shower or taking a shit any more than I wanna see my mom.

94

u/clinicallyacat 20d ago

Depends if you come from a “running in to ask your mom for something while she’s using the bathroom” family or not.

50

u/OsBaculum 20d ago

I come from an "even boys have to wear shirts in the pool" family lol

4

u/-Reverend 19d ago

As someone who comes from a family where it was perfectly normal to briefly walk around naked when anything else would be a minor inconvenience (example: Dad every morning strolling from the shower to the collective wardrobe room butt-ass naked bc he couldn't be bothered to pre-pick his clothes), the concept of "t-shirt in the pool for everybody" is ... probably just as alien to me as my situation is to you.

1

u/OsBaculum 19d ago

I'm a lot less uptight now (military+shyness don't really mix) but I still can't imagine casually hanging dong in front of the fam...

1

u/tofurainbowgarden 20d ago

Why can't you be both? Haha we are open with safe people but I read an exerpt from a pdf file that they love watching kids at pools and splashpads

16

u/OsBaculum 20d ago

Well that's the difference then. In our house modesty was about morality, not safety. If that makes sense? It doesn't matter if a person is "safe" or not because immodesty is inherently indecent. Religion, man, I tell you hwat...

-6

u/tofurainbowgarden 20d ago

Im not sure what you mean by what's the difference. We wear shirts at the pool but my kid constantly runs into the bathroom while I'm using it. Its safety reasons. We aren't religious at all

11

u/Anomander 19d ago

That user is telling you about their family, they’re not talking about yours.

1

u/woefdeluxe 19d ago

The difference is the at home private behaviour. A family that's strickt in modesty for religious reasons would also be strickt like that at home. So no seeing eachother in any state of undress at all. Whereas how you describe your family it sounds more like an external thing. That you aren't that strict about everyone needing to be covered when it's just your family who can see it.

3

u/Purple-Om 20d ago

I read an article about paedophilia too, but it was a Word doc.

81

u/Oookulele 20d ago

I sometimes forget that this is so different culturally. I'd say that in most families I know, it's pretty normal to see your parents naked. Then again, we also go to the sauna with a bunch of naked strangers, so, all things considered, naked family members are pretty tame in comparison.

Though tbf, I would probably draw the line at seeing my colleagues naked if it can be avoided.

25

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

I was more thinking the using the toilet aspect, but yes, not everyone is going to be comfortable with nudity around family either.

23

u/therealrenshai 20d ago

Intense direct eye contact while a take a dump is how I assert my dominance over my wife and kids.

2

u/Geodude532 19d ago

I wish my toddlers cared enough to not barge in while I'm pooping...

2

u/OtakuMage 19d ago

Toddlers are entirely different creatures. You can't judge them by the standards of someone 5 and up

1

u/Geodude532 19d ago

It's sad when the only quiet pee time I get is when I pee with the dogs in the backyard.

1

u/Oookulele 19d ago

My family actually also doesn't mind usinh the loo in front of each other but idk we may be unusual like that?

1

u/Pink-Viscera 20d ago

It is interesting how deeply ingrained cultural norms can be in our minds. Like I know logically there's nothing wrong with the nude human body and that seeing your family naked is perfectly normal in many cultures, but the thought of seeing my parents naked makes me so uncomfortable

3

u/Murky-Relation481 20d ago

My dad was routinely naked as a kid, and still even as an adult and him as a skinny old man. My mom was less naked around the house, but wasn't a big deal to see her in bra/underpants.

We'd also go to the Y often and that's always a sea of naked people. Used to sit in the sauna as a kid with old naked dudes, was perfectly normal (though lots of Scandinavians in my region, including our family to a large degree).

This is in the US too FYI, but the US is hardly a mono-culture.

2

u/BearyGoosey 20d ago

It was definitely uncomfortable when I went to my mom's house (because she was in the middle of a meth-induced psychosis) and heard her talking in the bedroom, so I go back there to see her in tennis shoes, end of list.

10

u/sibachian 20d ago

completely a different topic of discussion but this is probably one of the best arguments for online privacy. since it isn't just a theoretical situation, in many situations, you must actively find a hotel that doesn't have these bathrooms.

33

u/syntheticassault 20d ago

I don't want to see anyone shit, even my wife

30

u/DiscussionMiddle1238 20d ago

I don't even want to see me shit. I'd rather not have to be there at all.

1

u/SelectTrash 20d ago

Unfortunately, I had a mum with no privacy policy who thought it was perfectly fine to come into the bathroom while I was in the bath or shower.

u/bobs_monkey 20d ago

I'm kind of glad my wife broke that barrier very early in our relationship, so places we've traveled to didn't give the option

3

u/mrandr01d 20d ago

Fine, I'll keep an eye on her then...

12

u/Itub2000 20d ago

I also want to see this guy's GF take a shit

2

u/ggtsu_00 19d ago

Really making it increasingly hard to keep up the belief that girls don't poop.

-3

u/goat_penis_souffle 20d ago

When I was looking at places, I told the realtor that en-suite bathrooms were a dealbreaker for me. I have zero interest in hearing pissing/shitting three feet from where I’m sleeping. Put that bullshit down the hall where it belongs.

8

u/Also-Rant 20d ago

Sir, outside of hotels, en-suites are for ensuring you don't meet your kids on the way to do your post-coital ablutions; nobody wants them for shitting in the bedroom.

1

u/WholeLog24 19d ago

I agree, although I can live with a 'normal' en suite. The ones in my area, especially "luxury" homes, have no door. Just straight up, toilet-in-your-bedroom. So much hate for these.

A special dishonorable mention goes to bedrooms laid out where the closet is inside the bathroom, so that you can only access anything in your closet after walking through the bathroom. Because what I really needed was to cut off all access to my clothes because someone else is showering, or having someone tromp back and forth through the bathroom for laundry while I'm trying to poop.

Sociopaths design these homes, I swear.

31

u/Amelaclya1 20d ago

I hate this even just as a married couple. Just because my husband and I have seen each other naked and showering doesn't mean I want him to watch me poop. We've never been that relaxed around each other lol.

4

u/TentaclesAndCupcakes 19d ago

Same, jeeze, leave a little mystery in the relationship. 16 years together, times we've seen each other poop = zero

4

u/Samiru27 20d ago

Meh, I’d rather stay a hotel for a nice bathroom experience where I’m not forced to watch my partner shit.

8

u/is_this_funny2_u 20d ago

There is just something awful about watching your mom shit while you lay in bed. Probably did irreparable damage to our relationship

5

u/agafiendingallalong 20d ago

Why would the parents be fine with that? Does having children make you suddenly okay with shitting in front of your partner?

1

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

When you've spent enough time together, you've been through all sorts of bodily nastiness together. The socially ingrained awkwardness gives way to necessities, then casual acceptance that we are all human beings going through the same bodily processes.

3

u/Competitive_Ebb5741 20d ago

Nope. That’s not how this works. I’ve watched my wife give birth twice. Still wouldn’t let her watch me take a shit, or even be in the room next to the bathroom while I’m doing it.

3

u/SupaSlide 19d ago

I definitely don’t shit with my wife in the bathroom, but not letting her be in the room next to the bathroom is nuts. Do you have a master bath? Do you kick her out if you need to shit while she’s still in bed or do you go to another bathroom?

2

u/Quiet_Icarus 19d ago

My wife and I literally don't give a shit. She's my ride or die. My #1. My partner through hell and back. What the fuck do I care if I see her shit? She doesn't care either. We poop. Oh no.

1

u/Electronic_Flan_482 20d ago

After a decade of marriage you stop caring. My wife will shit in the bathroom while I'm brushing g my teeth at this point

4

u/knititating 20d ago

I think it depends on the people. My husband and I have known each other for over 20 years and had a kid together for 8 and we still avert our eyes when passing a toilet paper roll through the door when taking a #2.

1

u/agafiendingallalong 20d ago

There's such a thing as maintaining the mystery.

2

u/Raise_A_Thoth 20d ago

Depends on age, maturity, and modesty preferences.

Small kids don't really care. Pre-pubescent kids might kind of care about modesty but ultimately wouldn't be a real problem. Teens and up and it all depends on how modest the most modest person is.

People forget there are people who are completely fine with nudity because it is not inherently sexual.

4

u/Naive_Lion_3428 20d ago

My partner and I have seen each other naked more than enough times, but we still both don't want to see each other staining on the toilet!

5

u/[deleted] 20d ago

18

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

I'm pretty sure a lot of kids everywhere wouldn't be comfortable watching their parents use the toilet.

1

u/LordQor 20d ago

I actually don't know how common this is cross culturally. even in america it's not universal

1

u/i_dont_wanna_sign_in 20d ago

We traveled and one of the bathrooms was this way. Toilet was a few inches away from the glass. Bit awkward at first, but really no big deal

1

u/NoFingersMonkeyPaw 20d ago

but with kids there would be some serious issues.

Parents are Gross by Griffin & Quagmire

1

u/Anxious_Print8515 19d ago

I stayed in a 4-star hotel with my wife. Open shower was fine. Open toilet with a direct view from the bed? Not so much. I had to go 36 floors down to poop in the all-hours gym

-2

u/LurkingRand 20d ago edited 20d ago

....Why, exactly?

Edit: Based on responses, I presume this is a culture thing. I meant it as a genuine question, because it seemed weird to me. Especially to specifically call out kids.

18

u/Gullflyinghigh 20d ago

I don't think teenage me, bowel problems and all, would be delighted at the situation.

7

u/SunstoneDaemon42 20d ago

Privacy? When I was a child I wouldn't have wanted to see my parents in the bathroom. I also wouldn't have wanted my parents to see me in the bathroom. With what little privacy a shared hotel room gives you, the toilet is necessary alone time to shit or have an emotional breakdown without your entire family knowing.

15

u/Fluffy_Club722 20d ago

Some teenagers wouldn't want their siblings nor their parents to see that

1

u/LinAndAViolin 20d ago

Because I like being attracted to him?! 😭

-1

u/Saint_Subtle 20d ago

Not really, just uptight and sheltered conservatives. Most of us others are used to seeing family.

I can understand that if was not a more common occurrence. I guess my sisters and I sharing a bathroom, it was just the way it was. We were not bashful. Pretty much casual nudists anyway.

0

u/ra__account 20d ago edited 11d ago

meh

0

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 20d ago

Why would that cause issues? Presumably you've all seen each other naked before

-1

u/RateFree4240 20d ago

Since when kids aren't allowed to see their nude parents lmao

5

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

It's not a matter of allowed, it's a matter of comfort. Not everybody wants to see their parents naked, especially by their teenage years.

1

u/mentalissuelol 19d ago

I wasn’t allowed to see my parents naked once I was older than toddler age. Id get in trouble if i accidentally saw anything
