Forget where I saw it, but someone put forth a theory it's to discourage business travelers from sharing rooms

u/high_throughput 20d ago

I shared such a room and woke up to my showering coworker's silhuette on the lightly frosted glass lmao

I'll bring a large prosthetic penis on my next business trip to impress my roommate.

39

u/Jeathro77 19d ago

You may call it a prosthetic penis, but we all know it's a dildo.

20

u/ajstorey456 19d ago

theyre usually called straps when attached to people

5

u/Jeathro77 19d ago

Is it still a strap if it's up his bum?

13

u/ajstorey456 19d ago

its a strap if someone is wearing it, dildo if its hand operated

226

u/Extension_Problem223 20d ago

Okay, but how do we scale this? Claude, any ideas?

243

u/SilverMedal4Life 20d ago

Claude: You are overly dependent on AI programs to help do your job for you because you lack confidence in yourself.

Corporate Boss: This vexes me.

104

u/Extension_Problem223 20d ago

More likely response: "Hmmm... let's see what Chat thinks about this."

67

u/SilverMedal4Life 20d ago

Chat: You have no friends and are a loser. You will never know love or happpiness. And when you die, no one will remember your name, your paltry contributions fading away to nothing.

Ah, yes, I can see you're trying to figure out ways to strengthen corporate synergies with hot steamy coworker action. Let me help you with that.

Option 1: Orgies Orgies are a great way to help get your employees up close and personal with each other. They can meet, talk, and share their loads before sharing their workloads -- truly a great way to see all the facettes of your worker bees without relying on extensive hotel rooms. Just be sure to provide all the basic necessities.

Option 2: Add a dark room to the Cafeteria For a quick and easy way to destress and mingle, your coworkers can get right in their orifices before going to their offices. It's a surefire way for everyone to be relaxed and content in their daily routine and take care of distractions quickly

Option 3: put a pineapple on the watercooler.

If you'd like, I could make a list for the dos and donts of any of these great options or provide you with product links so you can start having the accommodations built.

6

u/LinwoodKei 19d ago

Option one orgies had me make a funny noise and now I'm trying to explain a reason to my ten year old. Well done

Going to ask Claude for a plausible excuse

Many designs in society that deal with private property and profit are hostile, but many people don't notice. Pay more attention.

15

u/cammcken 20d ago

Technically it's just reducing supply

63

u/Slight-Web1696 20d ago

No, its not. If you mean its reducing the supply of shareable hotel rooms, technically its not that, as the amount of rooms is not changing. The design and features are being made to intentionally create social discomfort between people to encourage or discourage a behavior. It is technically hostile design.

Biz major?

5

u/cammcken 20d ago

It's reducing the quantity of customers they can accommodate.

If you're a hotel with 50 rooms and 2 beds per room, and you start enforcing 1 guest per room, then you go from being a hotel with 50 rooms that can hold 100 guests into a hotel with 50 rooms that can hold 50 guests.

Complete amateur, actually. Maybe that's not the technical definition, but that's the effect I can see.

20

u/LostMyKeysInTheFade 20d ago

Yep and you totally eliminate families from the equation. No way in hell am I using that bathroom with my kid around

16

u/zenthor109 19d ago

But hotels dont care about the number of guests, they care about the number of rooms sold. I f the hotel normally sells 25 of their 50 rooms, and this change gets them to sell 50. Then its a good change for them.

2

u/j_shor 19d ago

Unregulated capitalism is a hostile design.

255

u/fizzrail0 20d ago

MAXIMIZE PROFIT! IT'S NEVER ENOUGH!

But really this bs is why i once canceled a while week's reservation for my family at one hotel.
Never booking there again

48

u/uberfr4gger 20d ago

I mean if I'm traveling for business I don't want to share a room with a coworker lol. Good for business travel, bad for personal travel

27

u/ClubMeSoftly 19d ago

Yeah, I did a summer business travel for my company, twenty different hotels, not once was "oh just share a room" brought up.

22

u/bobs_monkey 19d ago

I will to this day refuse to share a room with a coworker. We're coworkers, not intimate friends despite how cheap finance is.

97

u/ThoreauAweighBcuzDuh 19d ago

God, I stayed at one in Amsterdam that I didn't even want to share with my husband! The bathroom was a frosted glass tube in the middle of the room. You could see DETAILED outlines of everything going on on there, and there was also no sound (or smell 🤢) separation at all. Also, the room was tiny, so when you were lying in bed and the other person was using the toilet, their but was like less than a foot where you were sleeping, with only a thin piece of curved glass and a few inches of empty air between the mattress and the toilet. Why?? Literally the least comfortable, least romantic hotel stay ever. Worse than the bed and breakfast room full of taxidermied birds.

36

u/Any_Description_4204 19d ago

Yeah I’ve been in a hotel in Germany that also didn’t have a fully sealed glass separator between the room and the bathroom. Even for the purposes of not discouraging people to share rooms I don’t want to share my bedroom with my own smells either

2

u/Akira675 19d ago

It would suck for a traveling family, though. The parents would be fine seeing each other, nothing they haven't seen before, but with kids there would be some serious issues.

296

u/GreatStateOfSadness 20d ago

It can also be to encourage families to book multiple rooms as well.

Whatever it takes to increase room bookings without getting customers to start looking elsewhere.

215

u/ScienceMajestic8716 20d ago

It encouraged me to leave a 1 star review and never use that hotel again.

30

u/bobs_monkey 19d ago

You're also in the demographic that will make time to say something, most will just forget about it

3

u/Yorick257 19d ago

The more it sucks, the more likely you're to say something. So, if people are disturbed by this shit, they will try to write a complaint.

The problem might be with something like Booking because they often ask very specific questions.

84

u/nixcamic 20d ago

Yeah cause you should have to choose between your 9 year old seeing you naked or sleeping by themselves in a hotel room.

12

u/No-Boysenberry7835 19d ago

Just get the junior suite instead of a basic room s/

6

u/Forward_Writer6604 19d ago

yeah, but, WTF is the problem about your own Kids seeing you naked?

11

u/In7el3ct 19d ago

My thoughts exactly. My family always used our hot tub in the nude, bathrooms were only locked when going #2, etc. It normalizes and desexualizes the human body in a healthy way. I feel like the US's puritanical culture honestly causes more harm than good with this one.

5

u/yeaman17 19d ago

The puritanical culture is still way to prevalent in some areas of the U.S. I've straight up met guys that started getting weirded out about other people being close to their siblings and holding hands with them/friends. I think their minds are so warped from being so deprived of human touch

3

u/HHSOCCER28 19d ago

My daughter is adopted and has severe ptsd from abuse at bio home. Her seeing us naked would be extremely triggering. Any hotel like this would be an immediate no.

3

u/mentalissuelol 19d ago

It’s just a cultural difference. I haven’t seen my parents naked since I was so young that I had no qualms about barging into bathrooms where people are showering, and my parents weren’t even okay with that, they’d cover up as fast as possible and make me leave. That’s pretty standard in America. If you’re older than like 3 you don’t see your parents naked.

2

u/Soggy_Candidate5072 19d ago

Is this a real thing? Do parents actually walk around naked in front of their kids?

Depends if you come from a “running in to ask your mom for something while she’s using the bathroom” family or not.

49

u/OsBaculum 20d ago

I come from an "even boys have to wear shirts in the pool" family lol

4

u/-Reverend 19d ago

As someone who comes from a family where it was perfectly normal to briefly walk around naked when anything else would be a minor inconvenience (example: Dad every morning strolling from the shower to the collective wardrobe room butt-ass naked bc he couldn't be bothered to pre-pick his clothes), the concept of "t-shirt in the pool for everybody" is ... probably just as alien to me as my situation is to you.

→ More replies (1)

81

u/Oookulele 20d ago

I sometimes forget that this is so different culturally. I'd say that in most families I know, it's pretty normal to see your parents naked. Then again, we also go to the sauna with a bunch of naked strangers, so, all things considered, naked family members are pretty tame in comparison.

Though tbf, I would probably draw the line at seeing my colleagues naked if it can be avoided.

26

u/OtakuMage 20d ago

I was more thinking the using the toilet aspect, but yes, not everyone is going to be comfortable with nudity around family either.

22

u/therealrenshai 19d ago

1

u/Pink-Viscera 19d ago

It is interesting how deeply ingrained cultural norms can be in our minds. Like I know logically there's nothing wrong with the nude human body and that seeing your family naked is perfectly normal in many cultures, but the thought of seeing my parents naked makes me so uncomfortable

3

u/Murky-Relation481 19d ago

My dad was routinely naked as a kid, and still even as an adult and him as a skinny old man. My mom was less naked around the house, but wasn't a big deal to see her in bra/underpants.

We'd also go to the Y often and that's always a sea of naked people. Used to sit in the sauna as a kid with old naked dudes, was perfectly normal (though lots of Scandinavians in my region, including our family to a large degree).

This is in the US too FYI, but the US is hardly a mono-culture.

2

u/BearyGoosey 19d ago

It was definitely uncomfortable when I went to my mom's house (because she was in the middle of a meth-induced psychosis) and heard her talking in the bedroom, so I go back there to see her in tennis shoes, end of list.

13

u/sibachian 20d ago

completely a different topic of discussion but this is probably one of the best arguments for online privacy. since it isn't just a theoretical situation, in many situations, you must actively find a hotel that doesn't have these bathrooms.

I hate this even just as a married couple. Just because my husband and I have seen each other naked and showering doesn't mean I want him to watch me poop. We've never been that relaxed around each other lol.

3

u/TentaclesAndCupcakes 19d ago

Same, jeeze, leave a little mystery in the relationship. 16 years together, times we've seen each other poop = zero

5

u/Samiru27 20d ago

Meh, I’d rather stay a hotel for a nice bathroom experience where I’m not forced to watch my partner shit.

8

u/is_this_funny2_u 20d ago

There is just something awful about watching your mom shit while you lay in bed. Probably did irreparable damage to our relationship

4

u/agafiendingallalong 20d ago

Why would the parents be fine with that? Does having children make you suddenly okay with shitting in front of your partner?

2

u/Raise_A_Thoth 19d ago

Depends on age, maturity, and modesty preferences.

Small kids don't really care. Pre-pubescent kids might kind of care about modesty but ultimately wouldn't be a real problem. Teens and up and it all depends on how modest the most modest person is.

People forget there are people who are completely fine with nudity because it is not inherently sexual.

3

u/Naive_Lion_3428 19d ago

My partner and I have seen each other naked more than enough times, but we still both don't want to see each other staining on the toilet!

Is sharing hotel rooms in a business setting really a thing?

41

u/Far_Potato9948 20d ago

For small companies, absolutely. If the margins are thin, they might not send anybody to conferences if they can't shave pennies by doubling folks up

17

u/WechTreck 20d ago

If you're a startup or ex mil, sleeping on a yoga mat on the floor is also an option to cram more people into the room.

17

u/Acceptable-Access948 20d ago

To be fair, if I'm expected to travel for business, I expect them to pay for single occupancy. I'm not some bougie corporate type either, book me in the Best Western for all I care. But in this day and age I expect my own room.

15

u/WadeStockdale 20d ago

Glass partition is also probably cheaper than a separating wall.

Ngl though, it makes the hotel room feel like I'm back in a brothel. We always had at least a shower/bath in the room, and it really feels in the room when someone is in the bathroom with just glass between you

7

u/Hikuro-93 19d ago

As someone who has extensive experience working in hotels (all kinds of positions, all the way to management), but who's left that life behind due to the amount of overly greedy scummery coming from the top I witnessed in many of them in the back offices...

Welll... The mindset does track and fit to a T, that much I can say confidently.

Vast majority of business travelers have their own room. It’s totally expected and a pretty minor expense for anything worth sending people out in person.

5

u/randomwanderingsd 20d ago

I’ve shared a room with a coworker and we had this situation. We just had to be up front with each other that neither of us was modest and neither of us cared.

4

u/PalpitationThat9383 19d ago

Meanwhile, comic con rooms for two people with 8+ people sleeping in them continues on

3

u/r3dm0nk 20d ago

I was on a business trip and shared a room with my buddy.

We had see through toilet.

It wasn't bad because we were buddyies, but it was for sure a "huh" moment lol

6

u/FluxLeakage 20d ago

Honestly? I'm all for it. At the end of a long work day out of town last thing I wanna do is to also sleep in the same damn room with a co-worker.

2

u/Averander 20d ago

My theory is that it's because so many people use hotels for prostitutes and hookups that it's to be 'sexy'.

2

u/ennaeel 20d ago

Also, it allows them to make the room smaller while the glass bathroom walls make it appear bigger.

2

u/Alkoviak 20d ago

That’s seems to be the most plausible explanation

2

u/Total_Mix9276 19d ago

This is probably the likely answer, also could get them cheaper insurance or something along those lines too... lots of people are found dead in bathrooms. Maybe being able to see right inside lowers that.

2

u/StregAmore 19d ago

Jokes on them, I'm military and have showered with my coworkers

2

u/Oscaruit 19d ago

That explains the stupid sliding doors that don't lock. I share a room with my kids and wife. I still want some privacy.

2

u/XionicativeCheran 19d ago

As someone who hates the idea of sharing with colleagues and thankfully has never had to, I'd be happy with this.

fuckin must be. i went on a boys trip and shared the room with a dude cuz it was just for a night and imagine my surprise when the shower was clear glass.

That's probably the idea, but I can't imagine that it'd be worth all of the 1-star reviews

No, it's a law problem

I'm not sure if it's EU wide law, but is says the sunlight has to reach every part of the hotel room

To achieve this, hotels have these see through bathrooms, or windows to the bedroom, so the sunlight can reach in the bathroom

Or couples from ever renting a room? Seems like an own goal?

1

u/Tunamelts-2 19d ago

Not just business travelers but anyone not in an intimate, romantic relationship with the other guest. Even then…do you want to actually see them using a toilet? lol

1

u/Hackerjurassicpark 19d ago

Don’t they realise we’d just choose another hotel altogether and they lose even that single room booking?

1

u/crackofdawn 19d ago

I’ve worked for a dozen companies over the last 30 years and traveled for all of them and not one of them ever asked anyone to share a room. I think you’re vastly overestimating that as a problem

1

u/CorbecJayne 19d ago

I imagine what it does in practice is encourage business travelers to share rooms at a different hotel.

WTF, what company makes their employees share rooms on work trips???

1

u/Ikontwait4u2leave 19d ago

Don't worry, I would never share a room with a colleague regardless of restroom opacity.

1

u/yesacabbagez 19d ago

Two things, I have travelled quite a bit for work and it was never even suggested I share a room with someone.

Secondly, anyone who does do this will just rebook elsewhere.

You also have the issue of families. I doubt people want to watch dad take a loud shit at 7:30 in the morning

1

u/PM_Me_Modal_Jazz 19d ago

If my company made me share a hotel room on a work trip, I'd quit on the spot

1

u/snjtx 19d ago

This is probably the most likely answer.

1

u/AetheriaInBeing 19d ago

I had one of these while traveling with my ex. Dinner the night before did not sit well with me. Not the kind of thing you want only frosted glass between you and a romantic partner for though.

1

u/Accomplished-Dog2481 19d ago

Why do they make rooms with two separate beds then? For whom?

1

u/Deep-Pudding819 19d ago

Do co-workers really share rooms?? I travel often in my line of work with co-workers, and regardless of which company it has been for, we always get our own rooms. I could not imagine doubling up.

also to make people feel like the space is bigger

1

u/Neverlast0 19d ago

Just have small single person beds and explicitly ban people from sharing rooms.

1

u/Relagorikt 19d ago

I wouldn't want to have a room like that with other family members, friends, or even people I'm dating either, so It's doing a lot more than that. I just flat wouldn't want to stay in a place like that unless I was entirely alone.

1

u/JoshAllentown 19d ago

But then a company would be choosing to double their cost vs go to a competitor. They would just send the business travelers elsewhere.

1

u/ibspatrol 19d ago

How do you even know until you're already checked into the room and see it?

1

u/sponglered 19d ago

It's so that you can watch the prostitute while you shower. It's the rapist-class answer to "it's so hard to make the whore clap the whole time i shower (so i know she's not rolling me)".

1

u/_nf0rc3r_ 19d ago

This is genius. Never thought about that.

1

u/Author_A_McGrath 19d ago

My wife works the front desk at a hotel (dog is now retired) and she posits that this would be even weirder for families.

So my suggestion is that this is to encourage people to get more rooms instead of having to see into the bathrooms which is just so diabolical it could actually be true.

1

u/undeadmeats 19d ago

This would genuinely not stop any of my coworkers, and it would just be a funny story for years afterwards.

Or brothers and sisters…

Kendra Gaylord put out a great video on this.

But why in beach holiday destinations? As a married man I support this extra bit as father of two not so much.

It’s called team building
