OC Some of my recent New Yorker rejects [OC]

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 18d ago edited 18d ago
Hope you guys enjoy!
If you want more cartoons (that are funnier than mine), I run a quarterly Reverse Caption Contest for artists — everyone receives the same prompt and has to create the cartoon that turns it into a punchline. We're currently in the voting stage, so you can browse the 69 submissions and vote for your favorites here.
(Plus, a lot of r/comics regulars are competing!)

Cool contest. I love a lot of the entries. Don't have the skill to realize it, but my immediate thought when I saw the theme was a door opening to an immediate stone wall with a cut out for a person a la The Enigma of Amigara Fault and the door opener gesturing to someone else in the room "This is for you".
31
u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 18d ago
We actually get submissions from absolute beginners (like literally never drawn a cartoon before in their life) that do very well because the joke is able to carry the cartoon, so I wouldn’t let “skill” stop you from entering future contests!
Also we do allow joint entries, so if you’ve got a friend who’s a talented artist, send your idea their way and work together on it!

I thought the joke was that they're punished for not believing in god before the abrahamic religions were invented but yours is more fun

u/BlaBlub85 18d ago
Technically, at least the catholic church got that one covered by various edicts & decrees by varying popes. Theres provisions for aliens (extraterrestrials, not foreigners) too
Short version: Everyone that was prevented from learning about Jesus for reasons of time or location (uncontacted tribes as well as extraterrestrials) goes to a version of purgatory where they get the chance to accept Jesus as their saviour and thus be redeemed

u/llamagoelz 18d ago
Wow. Why did I also need that one explained to me? Lol

u/cullenjwebb 18d ago
Yeah I was trying to figure out what the hair meant on the other eagle, I feel silly now.

10
u/TrainDestroyer 18d ago
Sometimes the joke is really just that simple, you're looking for what the punchline is with the out of place eagle and don't realize "Oh they're literally called bald eagles"
5
8
u/dudeAwEsome101 18d ago
Oooooh, the long hair the honestly distracted me from the fact he is a bald eagle. Sorry, just Eagle.

"Tell them we met on tinder" is killing me
144
u/Glove-Box-Heart 18d ago
For real, my husband and I met online in the 90s, and tbh it was an embarrassing thing to admit at the time. We used to lie and say a mutual friend introduced us.
45
18
u/xXDJjonesXx 18d ago
There was this Smosh sketch years ago which made fun of this exact thing happening. They showed a couple in the 2000s lying about meeting online and saying they met irl, and then a couple in the 2010s lying about meeting irl and saying they met online.

This one was the most New Yorker of the bunch, along with the bald eagle. Most of the others were funny but more or less just puns.

u/NoStatus9434 18d ago
I like the clown and Matryoshka doll one because it implies that the trick behind clown cars is that one clown simply reproduces via binary fission.

I avoided Amazon for ages, then several of the things I used to avoid it started using Amazon logistics for shipping. They seem to be unavoidable...
76
29
u/Beldarak 18d ago
I try to use a local equivalent in my country but they often don't have a lot of choices, it's kinda annoying but every buy where I don't give money to Bezos feels like a big victory :)
15
u/Cat-Sonantis 18d ago
Not a lot of choices is fine, no choices for the thing or things I'm going for kinda changes it though, sometimes even specialist shops might not have what I'm looking for. If I can avoid Amazon I will but it's just gaulling to go somewhere else to avoid only to have them deliver it anyway.

Yes. Boycott has pretty strong limits so I don't think it's worse getting bankrupt over it.
The best way is still to vote ethically, and try to build a better world where those 0-ethics companies couldn't exists.
I try to avoid Amazon as much as possible but won't lose sleep if I can't avoid it for some stuff. When you live in a broken society, you have to play by its crooked rules. But I thin kchange will come. More and more people are sick with the bullshit.

God, how I miss "The Rejection Collection." For those not in the know, someone at the New Yorker created a book with numerous rejected cartoons from various artists. There were so many "Yikes!" moments.
My favorite was a scene with two witches sitting at a restaurant table, reading the menu. One witch says "I'm thinking of having a baby." Yeah, it was that good.

u/auktember 18d ago

u/Figorix 18d ago
6 is what?

11
u/Burakku-Ren 18d ago
I didn’t really understand it. Is it saying people before the “invention” of fire didn’t know what it is? Most of the others I found genius but I don’t get this one.
31
u/UberNZ 18d ago
Well, you actually did get it, but I guess the extra layer is that it's obvious they would actually know what fire is, so it's poking fun at the idea that cavepeople invented fire. I guess there's also the layer of it being funny they're sent to the "bad" afterlife of a religion that was invented tens of thousands of years after they died.
Honestly, the more you think about it, the more absurd it is. It smashes together various things you hear as a kid, but which can't possibly coexist together.
→ More replies (5)11
u/zayetz 18d ago
It's poking fun at religion. The idea is, if there's this very specific afterlife for certain people, and it's been around for eternity, then what did early humans - who were around before the invention/observation of fire - think of it when they got sent to hell for being bad cave people?
It's an absurd joke because the joke is that religion is absurd.
229
u/IamChicharon 18d ago
The cavemen in hell made me legitimately laugh out loud. I think that’s a first for me for any post on r/comics
70
u/2ChicksAtTheSameTime 18d ago
I didn't notice they were cavepeople. Now I get it.

u/TheMayanAcockandlips 18d ago

My only personal nitpick is that peeing and crying should have been pissing and moaning, but that’s just me. These are great!
95
u/GrokLobster 18d ago
That one is my personal favorite. But also I like comparing the literalism of 'peeing and crying' against the aphorism, because I think it points out exactly what the hell it is you're actually saying.
25
u/AsstBalrog 18d ago
I think that's worth a re-work OP, might sell that way?
71
u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 18d ago
I actually disagree — I think it’s funnier the original way!
→ More replies (5)20
u/stillreallylikespace 18d ago
Yupp you're right, the comic props the absurdity and discordance of the second door with the common expression on the first. "Pissing and moaning" is just common slang too, where's the punch if you replace the original with a standard phrase?

Not streetfood, more like something you get in in a café. Streetfood in NYC would be more like hotdogs.

These are all brilliant except I didnt get #6. I think I'm missing the joke. He doesn't know what fire is? Is it a nod to the orange pedophile president being in hell?
Edit: ok, Cavemen before discovering fire! This makes so much sense now. Thanks all. I can safely say these are all brilliant including #6.

They are cavemen from before we discovered fire and Christian beliefs weren't around but the joke is pointing out that Christians believe that anyone who doesnt accept Christ as their savior goes to hell (the pit of fire) and they also don't know what fire is yet

Based on these and based on the handful of published New Yorker Comics I've read, these are far too funny and good.
Your humor is too sharp. Gotta bland it down a little. edit to be perfectly clear - please don't actually do that. Find a different outlet or keep trying. I'd read the hell outta your stuff. This is great.

Very common for women in business is being talked over or casually ignored, but if a man repeats the thing she just said people's eyes light up and they praise him for the Great Idea. I have heard examples from multiple colleagues.
I myself am quite loud and taller than most men, so no personal anecdotes. Apparently I'm usually intimidating enough to be heard.
