[SUBREDDIT ANNOUNCEMENT] Changes to rules, adding snippet around catastrophizing detransition

We made adjustments to a rule by community request, it was hard to come up with a way to frame it but we think this can satisfy the concerns of people of the community.

New bit in rule 2 in bold:
This subreddit was created for all detrans folk. Users may express differing philosophical and political theories and beliefs, lightly or passionately, without disparaging other users for merely belonging to a group (especially groups into which we are born, eg sex, race, nationality, generation). That said, catastrophizing detransition to others is strictly prohibited. Moderation is to be unbiased. Please respect freedom of thought, speech, and association while you are here.

This means posts making out detransition to be the worst thing will no longer be tolerated while leaving room for preventing repression and stopping people from considering detransition for self-harm reasons. Thank you.

This was a somewhat difficult decision to come to as we don't wish to intrude on personal freedoms and speech but there's been a growing problem with particular individuals catastrophizing and making detransition out to be the absolutely worst thing and that is ultimately harmful. You can tell someone that detransition is not the option for them without making detransitioning itself sound like a horrible "forced" experience. (Which mind you, if you feel that way.. why are you here?)

DETRANS TIMELINE I had my breast reconstruction!

Post image
105 Upvotes

I’m almost 4 weeks post op and I am so so so happy! I feel like the part of me that was missing is finally back and I feel so much more connected with my femininity.

My surgeon was worried that he wouldn’t be able to get very big implants in since I had no breast tissue after too surgery and my scars were higher up than most mastectomy scars (so my scars sit across my breast right under my nipple) but he was able to get 375ccs in each leaving me at around 38B (or 32D? I’m still trying to figure out cup sizes as I hated my boobs from the second I hit puberty so I basically ignored them until now)! They look great and they’re only getting better as they heal.

I did unfortunately have to pay completely out of pocket — and I am so fortunate to be able to have the money to do so, but it did end up being around $9k including the $500 fee for endoscopic.

I feel so much happier and more confident and like myself and being able to wear clothes that I wasn’t able to before due to lack of breast/cleavage is so elating!!!!!

This is the best pic I have at the moment that isn’t me without a shirt on lol but I will update as they heal and “drop and fluff”.

INSPIRING POSITIVITY Life after detransition is possible

Post image

I lived as a “trans man” for 7 years of my life. Testosterone for 5-6 years. Started my detransition 2 years ago now.
I’ve always wanted to be a mother, but never saw it as a realistic possibility.

The female body is resilient. Don’t believe the fear-mongering of “testosterone makes you infertile”. It doesn’t. There is hope. We weren’t even trying for a baby and we have been blessed.

Came out 2020, back then everyone wanted a cool unique label with their sexuality

Im Ftmtf, I had depression and I was isolated. Im pretty sure there’s an amount of detransitioner who can relate to this. Back in 2020 everyone picked their pride flag, my friends wanted to label themselves all the time and I wanted that as well. I’m an artist and the artist community online is pretty queer or at least very open so a lot of people I used to interact with, used to draw themselves with flags and cool sonas. Back then I just turned 14 I didn’t even understand the concept of being transgender.
I feel like it was just a label for me, I feel like I genuinely thought you can experiment with your gender because before that, I never felt like a boy. But as soon as I outed myself my whole friendgroup was happy for me, proud of me. I didn’t have dysphoria before, but that was a point where I developed dysphoria because I believed I was a trans man for years. Time passed and my dysphoria just got worse because no one saw me as a guy.

I discovered the trans community and realized people can change their gender, I could take testosterone and remove my chest, that’s an option like that’s a normal thing to do when you have dysphoria? In my mind I always knew as a kid I never felt out of place because of my gender, I never even considered being a boy before, in fact I enjoyed being a girl before I outed myself. I feel like this outing tricked my own brain. I socially transitioned for 4 years, I started passing after the first year and I was desperate to start t.
So I started t a month before I tuned 18. Now I’m 20 next year and I was close to go through breast removal. That was the point where my body sent me signals, out of sudden I had so much doubt and I got scared. I am not trans.

Back then no one was able to convince me otherwise, I was 100% sure I was a man. Everyone who told me otherwise was transphobic in my eyes. I don’t think anyone would be able to change my mind if I could go back in time, and my transition was an important part of my life to discover who I really am.

I’m an ally for all queer people, I love my trans friends and queer friend group, but as a kid it can definitely confuse you and you’ll end up believing you’re someone else just to escape your own reality.

DETRANS TIMELINE 13 months off T

I've now been off T for over a year, so I wanted to post a comparison! I was on T for six years, and began taking it when I was around 16 (plus two years of hormone blockers starting at 14).

First pic was right after I had decided to detransition and was (awkwardly) experimenting with my hair and makeup, second pic is me now.
Even though there are still days where I struggle with my masculine voice and appearance, I feel sooo much more confident and happy with both my identity and presentation now.

I also underwent a breast reconstruction three months ago, which has improved my confidence SO much. It feels like I got to reclaim a part of myself that I've mourned for years

CRY FOR HELP sudden urge to detransition

hi everyone, im FtM (21). I started identifying as male at 13. It's impossible to write out an accurate narrative of what I was going through at the time but I think what is most relevant is that I was really obviously autistic and my parents did not believe in autism. Changing my name and finding my identity helped me immensely. I was super one hundred and ten percent sure I was trans and wanted to transition medically.

About three years ago, that confidence began to wane, and the realities of being transgender began to set in.Most of the time I feel fine but every few days i spiral into extreme anxiety and become convicted that I need to detransition. I think it's due to the increased politicization of transgender identity. I have no doubt that I would prefer to have been born a cis male, but I now constantly question whether I would rather be a trans male or a cis woman. I do have dysphoria, but I constantly question whether it is all in my head, and if I committed to accepting life as a woman, my quality of life would improve. I have very severe anxiety about being a very obvious trans person (quite short, full chested, curvy) I'm also goth, which isn't inherently fem but definitely doesn't help me blend in with men. I feel like i look like a clown trying to blend in with society

it also is just damaging to my ego, especially as an autistic person i sorta feel like I deceived myself and the thought of detransitioning shatters the trust i had in myself.Additionally everyone in my life knows me as a very secure man, and I've never expressed any doubt about my identity. I worry my trans friends will judge me or reject me for not being strong enough to remain a man.

I just want to feel like things will be alright, but when I think of the future, I am overcome by terror that I will live the rest of my life struggling helplessly against my biology.

VENT Appaled that they do this to autistic girls

I've been reading blog posts on 4thwavenow about the phenomenon of transgender-identifying autistic people and it's brought back some memories. I remember my own immature brain from when I was 16. I didn't hate myself as a girl, I just hated myself, period. I hopelessly fixated on transitioning and everyone just... went along with it. If only my parents were more invested in this, if only I'd gone to different ""specialists"" (though that probably wouldn't change much, they all just want money), if only I'd had a straight relationship before "transitioning". Because I had such a warped belief of how I'd be treated as a woman that experiencing a relationship made me realize it wasn't that bad at all (I can joke that a man "fixed me" now...).

It's all such bullshit, the male brain, the female brain. I was socialized as female, I was fine, I would've liked myself if the world liked me as myself. Nowadays it feels like I have to chase the high of being seen as what I actually am, the very few moments when I'm gender female. My boyfriend has no idea how important of a validation source he is for me. I know I'm still a woman but I wish my body was intact. Just for the sake of it being intact. I'm physically okay without breasts now that the psychosomatic pain is gone, but I'm a bit less okay with an unnecessarily surgically altered body. The writer of that blog spoke about difficulties in adjustment for autistic people. And yet they operated on me like it was nothing.

Wishing everyone strength.

ADVICE REQUEST I don’t think I can deal with being a normal man for the rest of my life.

I get that I’m male, I always will be. But I cry about it daily. I’ve tried exposure therapy for it different treatments. Nothing reduces my distress. I’m 19 I’ve been on HRT for over a year now and I don’t know what to do, I should probably detrans, but I have this urge to get FFS and SRS to try to make it better.

I don’t want to look in the mirror and SEE a male even if I’ll always be one biologically. I can’t relate to men, I feel disconnected from what i actually am in a way that deeply hurts.

ADVICE REQUEST How do I deal with gender dysphoria?

Its been killing me, I just wanna die, most of the time I only feel happiness when I do my hobbies or lay down and imagine a life were I pass as a man and have male friends, a gf, you know a normal male life that I'm denied instead ppl view me as a zoo animal when I go out, they laugh at me and mock me, I don't believe you can change sex and I don't want to get the hormornes or surgery that will shorten my life and make me sick for ever

QUESTION - MEDICALLY TRANSITIONED REPLIES ONLY Can't scream?

This is a question for my FTMTF Detransition folks or those on Hormones that may affect your vocal chords.

Have you found that you are no longer able to scream? As a Detransitioner who is presenting more feminine every day, it actually terrifies me that one of my natural self-defense mechanisms as a woman has been taken away from me. It's actually so scary to think that one day you might be in trouble but are unable to voice it. Even shouting is difficult. It's as if my vocal chords just give up after a certain pitch as if they're damaged. If I do try to scream, it's just voice cracks that aren't even very loud. It's an embarrassing sound, really. I've yet to hear anyone actually mention or talk about this side effect.

Adding another question, but do you find your deeper voice to be upsetting to you now? I've always hated my voice because I was bullied for it for being too high, but now that I'm trying to revert back to being a woman again, it's too low. This is like a never-ending battle. I'd prefer my old voice over the one I'm stuck with now. Everyone tells you to voice train, but does that actually even do anything? I try to talk into my head voice but find I sound more like a gay man if I do so. Or a trans woman. I just want to sound decent, y'know?

Replies are appreciated. Just don't wanna be alone in this feeling of vulnerability.

CRY FOR HELP Coping with extreme dysphoria without transitioning

Sorry this will be a bit long. Although I know real trans people exist in very small numbers due to rare cicumstances I dont agree with most of the transgender ideology and I believe most of it is the result of mental illness. Throughout the 6 years ive experienced severe life threatening levels of gender dysphoria around my body and how im percieved socially ive proposed the idea that i am just suffering with extreme mental illness over and over only to be told that I am in denial about being trans and need gender affirming therapy. Social transitioning has alleviated some of that dysphoria and i am now 18 years old and at a point where i can start diy T today, but im having a lot of doubts.

I dont think I am truely trans because I put the idea of being s guy in my head first (around age 13) and experienced the dysphoria as a result second. I was never a transgender child, any "signs" that I am trans are sparse or could easily be confirmation bias. Being trans has done the opposite of helping me, the more years I poured into this escapist fantasy of being a guy the more mentally ill i got and the more prominant this brain body disconnect became until its reached a point where ive considered ending myself just out of how hopeless ive become and how much my dysphoria negatively affects my ability to function in everyday life.

When I finally got diy testosterone I was the happiest I've been in a long time, like my life finally had meaning and potential again. But deep down I know that even with medical transition and countless surgeries I wont ever be 100% happy in my body. I will always feel like a crude mockery of a man or a third gender abomination. Recently I've been trying to get these ideas that other trans people told me about transitioning being the only way to find happiness in my situation out of my mind and im trying to slowly get used to the idea of maybe finding happiness and peace in my body.

This is extremely difficult for me and I am not sure how to go about it. Calling myself a "woman" alone makes me feel iffy and upset and its hard for me to find peace with my body when my dysphoria makes me feel so deformed and disfigured. I also have this constant nagging thought at the back of my mind that if i dont medically transition now I will deeply regret it in the future and I'm not sure what to do. I just dont know how to cope with these feelings and I'm feeling really hopeless and scared.

I know my experiences do not align exactly with detransitioners as I did not ever medically transition and still experience this dysphoria but i really have noone else to ask that might understand. Is there any type of gender therapy that WONT try push me into transitioning and how do I deal with these feelings?

NO POLITICS - DETRANS/DESIST ADVICE ONLY detrans mtftm after 10 years on fem HRT. am i cooked

detransitioning after 10 years mtftm- am i cooked?

I'm 25, mtftm, 10 years on Estrogen + testosterone blockers. I came out as mtf at 14, began medically transitioning right after turning 15. I lived and passed as a girl beautifully for 10 years. whenever i told someone, even queer and other ts people, they were shocked. many men i told who approached me didn't believe me. but despite that, i always felt like a boy playing dress up in the back of my mind. i wanted to detransition in the later years but i felt like i was in too deep.
i'm bisexual but i had only ever dated men, and i was treated so horribly. fetishized, hidden, never committed to. i never had any surgeries, and i still enjoyed using my "piece".
about 6-ish months or so, i had realized that i was in love with one my close cis girl friends and we had straight, penetrative sex. i had been with many men but had never been with a girl in that way. she made me feel like a man, and i loved it. it completely shattered the way i viewed myself and my entire life.
i had already had thoughts about wishing i had never transitioned, but this sent me to the extremes. i began mourning the years i missed out on being a boy. i began hating wearing makeup and dressing feminine. i missed being my sisters little brother. i missed being my moms son. i hated that this girl i was falling in love with still treated me like a trans girl. it made me feel ridiculous and ashamed, because i realized i subconsciously felt like a man.
when i initially transitioned at 15, i really did feel like a girl, but i haven't felt that way in a long time. now, im just getting off hormones. i gave my whole wardrobe of girl clothes away and got new stuff. a lot of my guy friends gave me clothes, ive let everyone in my life know that im detransitioning and they're all treating me weird now. atp, whenever i see a cis man i get jealous. like that could've been me.
i'm not sure if i ruined my whole life. i've been really depressed and borderline s**cidal bc of all this. i was in tanner stage 4 of male puberty and my "piece" is only 4 inches hard. i have an a-b cup. i'm 5'5. my voice is high. i keep wondering if it's too late in life for me to detransition. will i ever be able to ejaculate normally again? will i ever grow facial hair? how am i gonna live as a guy with boobs? will my endocrine system/testes wake back up? will i can get be able to live a normal life as a guy, or did i blow it?
i still support trans people even tho i realized i wasn't one, but i wish i could go back in time and stop myself. someone tell me i didnt completely ruin my life and there's still hope, i cant take it

DISCUSSION Did anyone experience similar thoughts?

During my transition as ftm ( I considered myself as gay) I had situations where I felt like I want to be the girl in the relationship, where I envied other girls for having beautiful bodies to attract other men. I always thought I felt that way cause the majority of men is heterosexual and only a few gay men would actually date a trans man. I also never felt really dysphoric about my vagina. But when I dated the first cis gay guy something felt off, I felt like I was playing dress up as girl. I always believed I’m a very feminine trans man (while presenting extremely masculine just to pass and not experience discrimination) but at the same time I always wanted to be more feminine in the relationship, feel a little „vulnerable“ idk how to explain.

But yeah this has been haunting me for a while because I never dated a cis man as a cis girl myself, I never experienced a heterosexual relationship as a girl and maybe thats the reason I believed I was trans for so long because I still don’t know of this might be the right thing for me.

ADVICE REQUEST I want to be a cute anime boy

Hi everyone, I'm MtF and have been transitioning for about 3 years at this point, and been actively socially transitioning for 2.5. Overall I don't have many complaints, I can look in mirrors now (which is nice) and I'm generally doing much better mentally than I was 3 years ago. Something odd which has been happening lately, though, is that sometimes the idea of being male sounds kind of appealing? It mostly shows up when I think about being in a relationship with a woman. Like, the idea of being a willowy and effete bishonen-esque guy and participating in some of the more feminized and non-threatening social aspects of masculinity, like medieval courtly love stuff, sounds appealing sometimes. If I did actually try to live this, though, I don't think I'd be able to maintain it after 25 with a male endocrine profile, and the idea of looking any more male than like Bjorn Andresen in Death in Venice or one of the guys from Ouran High School Host Club feels viscerally sickening. I also have c-cups, which would complicate matters. Idrk what to make of these sentiments, is this something that may be significant or have I just brainwashed myself into developing autoandrophilia by means of Death Note fan art?

ADVICE REQUEST Just wanna chill out for good

Hi everyone, posted on here a few times but im just so bloody worried about all this shit and I hate it. I'm 16M, really hope thats all I wanna be. Currently my main issue is that whenever I call myself a man or identify with that (most of the time anyway), I get this feeling of pressure or stress in my head. When I don't it feels like a celebration. I don't know why this happens. I have no issue with being a man, at least I hope I dont. Genuinely throughout childhood and through early puberty I was always comfortable. In fact, I've thanked God to be a boy before. Thought it was so good and I always strongly identified with it, even if I had slightly "effeminate" interests. I'm bisexual too, I previously was in denial about liking men and thought I was gay but I'm leaning more towards bisexuality. Thoughts of being a girl used to be terrifying and they're not as much anymore, I still get some discomfort occasionally but sometimes it feels like I'm forcing it or that I'm in denial about it and I hate it because sometimes I feel like if I get an intrusive thought like "what if im trans" it feels like pressure in my head eases and I hate it but I really dont want its making me uncomfortable even typing that this is not how I wanna live I love being a man ill do anything to stay one I'd definitely pick to be born a boy like I've tried telling myself oh gender isn't too important and I've had an easier couple days bit the thoughts are 24/7 and I just hate it. Sure I'm a bit gobby for a man, always been like that and many of my friends are girls I feel I can be more talkative towards them but historically I always felt like "one of the lads" and stuff. I hope these are just OCD intrusive thoughts I'm not properly diagnosed but like I hope it's not real I really hate it. I've had this for like 18 months on and off, went through a horrible period similar to this from Oct-Dec last year, and while I had spikes and spirals after that it quietened down on the whole. I was really glad I stayed a boy for the most part, and eventually I went days without thinking about it. Now my minds saying that I was just in denial but I just don't wanna live my life as trans or as a woman. I love my male genitals I always have I love my flat chest I love boys clothes I had this wave of euphoria earlier when I imagined myself as a dad or an old man but then my mind says it felt fake. I just can't get gender off my mind. I get looping thoughts like "I'm glad im a boy/Id hate to be a girl" and I hope they're true but like I just dont want to be hyper aware of my gender I just want it to be a born thing. I'm so much more than this I feel like im wasting my time where I could just be doing other stuff but whenever I try these thoughts ruin it like I've got much more I just hope it isn't real I hope I dont want to be a woman. I always thought they were icons but I never recall a moment in my life wanting to be one, I can recall moments where I've been jealous of other men or boys though, thinking a lot of my male mates were cool and aged 13 whenever I watched the girls & boys video by Blur I was so jealous of damon albarn, his jacket his hair I've always loved getting my hair cut and stuff and my fashion style, the idea of being a middle aged dad, I've always looked up to my dad and I might be soft for a boy and I like that but my mind gives me this stress now when I want to express my masculine side. I hate it so much I just wish I could be HIM again. Sorry this is all typed in a bit of a panic I just wish these thoughts could all go away and I could just see everything normally again. I really really really really don't want to be trans or a woman and I'm sorry if I'm just bothering everyone here I just want to know myself properly again and get on with life.

ADVICE REQUEST - FEMALE REPLIES ONLY Im usually okay with being ftm until I see a pretty woman

I've been transitioning for a decade now, on and off T a lot (back on as of a month ago) but always presenting as male regardless. I've briefly experimented with detransitioning in the past but that was mostly just online, I never did much irl besides some makeup and longer hair (while still presenting as male)

But I've noticed recently that any time I see a woman I think is pretty, I get so envious. And I know its envy and not attraction. I want her hair, or her hips, or her breasts, or her cheekbones, sometimes just all of it together if I think she's really beautiful. I want to be her and look like her, not be with her.

I don't really know where this leaves me. Right now I want to be a beautiful woman so bad. I want my long hair back and my breasts back. I want to be a girlfriend, a wife, a mother. But most days I really like my facial hair, my muscles, my more masc physique, and I still want an even deeper voice (despite it always being read as male now). But then there are those days where I wonder if I regret top surgery, if I'd love to be seen as a woman again.

I'm just not sure what to do or where to go from here. This question has been rattling around in my head for 3 years now

RANDOM THOUGHTS electrolysis advice from an experienced woman

I started electrolysis for facial hair in March 2026 and I have a very important advice for women here. NEVER PLUCK YOUR FACIAL HAIR AFTER STARTING ELECTROLYSIS (I don't know about laser, I can speak only about electrolysis). It makes the whole process entirely useless, hair regrow, it can activate hair follicles in places on your face it didn't grow before. I swear I didn't know I couldn't do this until my electrologist asked me if I plucked my hair. I said yes and she said "well now I understand why we don't have any progress so far". And she was fucking right, once I stopped plucking hair between sessions progress has been very rapid. Now I have like only 4-5 hair left to get rid of and I'm DONE. I'M FINALLY DONE. I'm finally about to forget about fucking facial hair, I can't express how much I hate this shit and how much even ONE hair on my chin or in stache area makes my mood a disaster.

why did I pluck hair at all? Impatience. Or finances. When I couldn't afford next session, I just plucked all hair that grew out. But my electrologist said I should've cut them short instead, if I couldn't visit her. However, now I don't miss any session, I’m holding out and waiting for the session without touching these hair.

If I hadn’t been plucking my hair, I would have finished the process back in early summer. But I plucked them between sessions all spring and summer, so I assume I’ll only finish in November or December. Don't make my mistakes girls 😭

(btw, shaving is as harmful for electrolysis process as plucking, it strengthens the follicles and prevents them from being destroyed by electrical impulses)

ADVICE REQUEST Dont want to make the wrong choice

Does anyone have a way to stop the thoughts. Im 19m and have had thoughts of wanting to be a girl since i was a kid but recently (last couple months) its just been getting worse and worse. Im happy being a guy and im maybe very very slightly more feminine than other guys but its like 80-20. so i really dont know why im having them. Im just like any other lad my age. Just feels like ill throw a very good life for something thats very unknown and comes with risks. Everything about being trans seems so difficult and im scared ill eventually start it and then regret it.

The only reason i havent started hrt is because something in me just says i cant be trans theres no way and everything about being trans is so difficult. I also have had bad experiences with lgbtq from being around my brother and his mates who are lgbtq so i dont wanna be associated with that.

Really need help, im just so lost with this and its really affecting me lately.

ADVICE REQUEST - FEMALE REPLIES ONLY ACNE

stopping t has made my acne flair up tremendously oh my word. Struggling lately with top surgery regret and get this feeling of impending doom and anxiety in my heart multiple times a day. Just trying to take it day by day, catch up on college classes, and breathe.

Any advice on talking to loved ones? I have family members I want to reach out to but it feels like a burden to be like nvm I’m not trans. Idek.

I’ve already been researching breast reconstruction (don’t worry I’m not gonna jump into that lmao, I got mastectomy in March of this year). Expecting that a surgery will fix my self-concept is a lesson I’ve already learned, and I know it won’t fix the root of the issue.

I started searching for a therapist who WILL NOT encourage me to continue on hormones just because I’m distressed (at the result of the hormones and surgery).

People look at me so confused, even my boyfriend who’s trans. One of the first things he said to me when I told him I regret top surgery is that “it just sucks because people use this as a reason to say ‘see, they regret surgery so it shouldn’t be offered.’” my values and opinions on transition have changed so now I am wanting to break up with him. I love him but I also don’t see a future with him and I don’t think he understands how much pain I am in, despite me expressing my regret almost daily.
We live together which makes things ten times worse so any advice on how to break up with someone who moved in three months ago would be much appreciated, I feel horrible but I can’t keep pretending things haven’t changed.

DISCUSSION - MEDICALLY TRANSITIONED REPLIES ONLY My 2 year long testosterone usage triggered my scalp to get androgenic alopecia (a genetic condition) decades earlier than it naturally would’ve, at only 23 years old. (My story, and my advice to other detrans women)

I was on T for 2 years, and during this time my temples became sparse (which was to be expected). But not only that, my hair strands also became thinner, my hair texture changed (normally it’s curly but it became wavy), and I experienced slightly wider hair part lines/scalp exposure. My hair color also appeared lighter, from a super dark brown (almost black) to a lighter brownish color.

I brushed all of this off as “Well, my temples are just receded because I have a masculine hairline now. And the hair texture and color change? Probably just hormones… I’ve heard that people’s hair texture can change after big hormonal shifts.”

I have been off T for 3 years now, and none of these hair changes have resolved themself much at all. And my hormone levels are normal! The only thing that has “fixed itself” is that I have a lot more wispy downy fine baby hairs that grew in along my hairline. But other than that, the hair shedding, the extra scalp exposure, super sparse temples, and hair texture and color change was still there.

I thought to myself “why isn’t this going away? I’ve been on my natural estrogen for 3 years. Maybe this is how my scalp/hair will be permanently.”

Then, randomly, in the last 3 months, it randomly started getting WORSE. My temples started receding back even more and I experienced even MORE constant shedding. I decided enough was enough and ordered a scalp biopsy test so that I could get an official diagnosis (if there was one). I was prepared for the results to possibly come back as “inconclusive”, but I figured that getting my follicles examined on a microscopic level was my best bet to figuring out what’s going on.

My diagnosis results? Androgenic alopecia.

I came into the dermatologist office to discuss my diagnosis with her, and plan the treatment. She told me that this is a genetic condition and that my hair follicles are genetically programmed to be sensitive and shrink in exposure to even NORMAL DHT levels. I asked her if I should order a lab to get my DHT levels checked. She told me it’s not really necessary in her opinion because with androgenic alopecia, even if the DHT is normal or even low, the follicles are still sensitive to it and shrink in response to it. She said it’s more about the sensitivity level to the DHT, not necessarily how high the DHT is.

I admitted to her about my past of being on testosterone for 2 years when I thought it was trans and asked her if this could’ve contributed to this. She said “actually yes. You probably would’ve gotten androgenic alopecia/female pattern hair loss down the line anyway, but you taking testosterone probably triggered it to happen much sooner. Like a couple or few decades sooner than it would’ve happened normally. Unfortunately, once it gets triggered/activated, it doesn’t go away, and tends to be a lifelong condition, but you are young and you caught this relatively early, and your hairloss is relatively mild, so I’m optimistic about you experiencing some regrowth with treatment.”

I asked her “Why don’t all detransitioned women get androgenic alopecia? You’re saying that you have to have a genetic susceptibility to it in the first place?”

She said “Yes, you have to have genetics that make your hair follicles sensitive to DHT. The detrans women that experience full regrowth probably aren’t genetically sensitive to DHT.”

And she proceeded to try to console me by telling me not to feel too bad about the testosterone/transitioning thing, she said various things can “trigger” androgenic alopecia in a genetically susceptible person, not just transitioning. She said PCOS can trigger it, random hormonal shifts can trigger it, taking steroids can trigger it, or even certain birth controls can trigger it, or just natural aging.

She prescribed me with oral minoxidil (to stimulate growth) and oral spironolactone (to supress DHT levels). She told me if oral spironolactone doesn’t work for any bizarre reason, she will possibly look into finasteride for me but she said she doesn’t like prescribing that to women. And she said she thinks the spironolactone will work anyway.

She told me (paraphrased, not the exact wording): “Expect to not see any results at all until about 6-12 months. Just keep taking the pills everyday, even if you see no progress, it’s important you keep taking it everyday and don’t skip days or randomly stop. You’ll revert the progress if you stop. You’ll have to take these pills for life. Unless of course, you just don’t want the treatment anymore. In your case, considering your hormones are normal and you don’t have PCOS, this isn’t something you HAVE to treat. It’s not like, a dangerous condition that negative impacts your genuine health functioning, it’s mainly just a cosmetic condition. If you grow up and get older and don’t want to do it anymore and want to rock hair pieces or hair toppers or wigs, or just wear your hair naturally however it is, you have the right to do that. It’s not MANDATORY to take these pills everyday the rest of your life. As long as you’re aware that the hair loss will progress and won’t improve without treatment and you’re informed of that, you can take whatever path you want to”.

Soooo… yeah, long story short (and sorry that this was so long), I see a lot of detransitioned women online say that once they stopped T, their hairloss reverted. Which is great! But if yours DIDN’T revert, OR randomly starts getting worse like mine, look into getting a diagnosis because if you have genetics that prime you to be sensitive to DHT, it’s possible that testosterone could’ve triggered this genetic condition to happen earlier than it would have, if not for the testosterone exposure.

This is not supposed to be any sort of fear-mongering, this is supposed to be helpful and advice that I wish I’d gotten. So many friends and family of mine said “you can barely even see any hair loss, you don’t need a scalp biopsy!! Plenty of women have sparse temples.” So I almost didn’t even go get a biopsy bc so many people kept telling me that I didn’t look like I needed it because my hair loss wasn’t “severe enough”. But I’m glad I got the biopsy because androgenic alopecia is a lifelong, progressive condition (which means it continues to only get worse and worse without treatment), so if I would’ve listened to everyone and not got the biopsy, I’d still have no clue that I have this genetic condition right now.

So if you’ve been off of testosterone for years, and your hair loss and scalp exposure is showing no signs of improvement and in fact, is seemingly getting worse, I suggest going to examine your hair follicles for a diagnosis. It may not be androgenic alopecia, it could be anything, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, nutrient issues, thyroid issues, low iron, but after ruling out nutrient and thyroid, if it’s STILL going on, then yeah I definitely recommend getting an examination or biopsy.

I just wanted to share my story incase anyone is going through anything similar or is struggling with hair loss or suspects it’s possible that their testosterone usage could’ve triggered androgenic alopecia.

TDLR:

I was on T for 2 years, off for 3 and during the past 3 years my hair loss, increased scalp exposure, and hair strand thinness did not go away, if anything it seemed to slowly be getting worse.

I got a scalp biopsy and was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia, a GENETIC, lifelong condition that my doctor said was likely triggered to start DECADES earlier than it naturally would’ve, due to my testosterone usage. I am 23. She said it probably would’ve happened when I was middle aged/menopausal, but the testosterone usage likely upstarted/triggered it to begin MUCH sooner.

So if you are a detrans woman and have been off T for a long time and your hair loss is not improving at all, or getting worse, I highly suggest first checking your nutrient levels (most importantly vitamin D, biotin, Iron, and Zinc), and your thyroid functioning. If those come back clear and nutrients and thyroid isn’t the issue, then I suggest getting an examination or even a biopsy like I did to examine your hair follicles closely, to get an official diagnosis.

There are many hair loss conditions, there’s also alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris, CCCA, temporary telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, triangular temporal alopecia, and more. It’s best not to blindly guess what it could be, it’s best to intervene early and get your hair follicles looked at and start treatment asap.

P.S: Sorry if there are any typos! I’ll fix them later. I wrote this real quick before my work shift because this has been weighing on me eversince I recently got diagnosed a week ago, and I felt the need to share my experience.

DISCUSSION I got they/them’d last night at an event and it felt so weird 😭

I went to a dan and phil event in my state and I met this very lovely woman who was around my age who was so nice to me, but she kept referring to me as they throughout the night even tho I was wearing a skirt and makeup and I basically have a bob at this point 😭 it’s so weird, I think like two people called me they because they couldn’t tell that I was a woman even tho I’m pretty feminine at this point and I never went on T, all I did was bind and cut my hair short and I haven’t binded in almost a year tbh lol

VENT Lacking community as a GNC detrans woman

I am so lonely. I have a lot of trans friends and I appreciate them because they still understand my life experience more than others, but I don’t know any masculine female people who are not currently in the process of some sort of transition. All I want is something like Michfest or Lilith Fair where I can go to escape and be amongst other women who don’t conform. And unfortunately I think that any space for detrans women would be infiltrated by right wing agitators who are not detrans. I just want one person in the world who understand.

QUESTION was I ever really trans, or was I just miserable being male?

I’ve been questioning a lot of shit lately and honestly don’t know what to think anymore.

i’m 21. when i was 16, i think i wanted a feminine body, but looking back, i don’t know how to interpret those feelings. i don’t know if it was dysphoria, a fetish, or if i just hated myself and wanted to be something else. i keep going back and forth trying to figure out what i actually wanted back then.

part of me thinks i’d be happier if i’d started transitioning younger. i grieve the person i feel like i could’ve been and the years i feel like i’ve lost. but another part of me wonders if i was trying to escape being an undesirable male in the first place.

i’m 5’7, a virgin, and i never really had a girlfriend either. i’ve spent a lot of time feeling like i’ll never be desirable or experience the things other people seem to take for granted. i’ve been smoking weed to cope with reality, but it doesn’t change anything. when i’m sober, i’m right back to thinking about my body, my future, and whether i’ve misunderstood myself this whole time.

i can’t tell if i genuinely wanted to be female or if i was unhappy with being male and saw transition as a way out. maybe those feelings overlapped. i honestly don’t know anymore.

i’m not asking anyone to tell me i’m definitely trans or definitely not. i’d like to hear from people who have actually questioned their transition or detransitioned. did you ever look back at your original reasons for transitioning and realize they were different from what you thought? how did you figure out whether you genuinely wanted to transition or were trying to escape something else?
