USA Current political climate recent news about illinois temple shooting
Recently there was an attempted shooting by a 19 year old white nationalist at a temple in illinois. Now some conservative news sources are reporting that the person who did it is allegedly trans (ftm). Im an indian trans guy and seeing the way everyone is talking about this situation is making me lose my mind. On one hand there are white nationalists justifying it, finding out the shooter might be trans, and then immediately backtracking and talking ab institutionalizing trans people and “trans violence” and “trans people are all mass shooters.” Its genuinely laughable to see them pretend to care about racial minorities when they have the opportunity to pin these crimes on white women or white queer people. Then on another hand, cishet indian people are also saying bullshit like “being racist makes you trans (or vice versa)” or “trans people are mass shooters.” There are even tweets from some white trans women that are like “There you go trans guys! Heres the visibility you want, let them know this ones not on us.” What is making this community think that this is an appropriate thing to say in response to this news? Yeah indian trans people are a small community but what is it with the “only white people can be queer” assumption? Now brown trans guys are catching strays from white trans people and cishet indians for an attempted hate crime against indian people by an allegedly white trans man? Conveniently, this whole attempted hate crime is never just blamed on the piece of shit being a nazi. Thats all. That is why he did it.
I understand that a lot of the overtly anti trans rhetoric focuses on trans women and yes it is transmisogynistic, but so many of the posts from white trans women and even white trans men making that “haha now youre visible” joke just pisses me off. Im not saying that all white trans people are racist/tone deaf or all cishet indian people are homophobic/transphobic but whenever bs like this happens people with intersecting identities ALWAYS get thrown under the bus and erased from existence so people can push their agendas.

Hang in there. I'm also an Indian trans guy. People are always so quick to throw us under the bus. It seems they forget that a majority of shootings are committed by cishet white men. It's all just a mess of oppression and privilege and denial.

Seconded your comment there, Brother.
This is the most important part to remember: The majority of Shooters across the history of them happening in the U.S. are committed by White Cis Christian Men. Any attempts to include the identity of the shooter if and when it's not any of those four categories will AUTOMATICALLY be sensationalized.
Ever notice how, when it's a shooter that's anything but those four, they usually always disclose the identity right off the bat? Hell, they never even state the name until way later.
If it's a person belonging to a Marginalized group of people? IMMEDIATE identification.
This is all by design and on purpose. Especially before the Midterms. Stay frosty, stay safe, and remember that We Are Still Here. 🏳️⚧️

Oof, that's rough. Whenever cishet white folks comment on a shooter being trans, queer, or non-white I am always very quick to remind them a vast majority of shootings are commited by cishet white dudes and their comments sound like projection. Shuts 'em up pretty quick. Hang in there friend ❤️

Not that this helps much, but the shooter has been confirmed to be trans, but she's actually a trans woman. Court documents reveal that she is taking estradiol.

The original source is from Carlos Ocampo, an attorney from Illinois who has access to records that have not been released to the public yet. I imagine this information will be made public soon enough.

These people genuinely think intersecting identities can't exist. I think with time it will get better, but trans people right now are such a small part of the population that our voices are barely heard and especially if you belong to another minority group. Also, right now, this country is extremely emboldened to be racist. I worked voter registration in my state (NC) and got told to go back to Mexico at least like once every two shifts.
But also, people will always say outrageous things on the internet. I try to avoid it because it's exhausting to see all the infighting and the fact that all of it is just distracting us from making any change...

The same thing happened with the Annunciation school shooting last year, bad actors latched onto it and completely glossed over the fact that the shooter was a detrans groyper. It didn’t seem to get much airtime outside of those really malignant cells though, hopefully that will the case here - if you’re hearing it irl from people you care about it’s a chance to try to educate, if you’re hearing it online it’s time to start doing some blocking and curating your online space
