Dont even read it. Leave it as unread. "I didn't see my phone"

u/Mioraecian 1d ago
Nah, thats just showing you are afraid of telling them no. Respond, "I have plans and cannot make an unscheduled shift".

I mean the "boss" here isn't exactly being direct. I'd respond the same way.

But the answer isn’t direct. It doesn’t say “no”. It says good luck. But the meaning is clear.

Same boss would probably give you flack about being on your phone during work hours, but expect you to respond immediately to their message when you’re not on shift

I disagree. I don't need to be on my phone all the time and I also don't owe anyone a response even if I read their message.

For anyone that doesn't know, on iphone you can click the name at the top of the message and turn off "send read receipts" on a per individual basis. So you can have read receipts on for your family, but off for your boss an such.

The magic words...
I'd love to help BUT...
I have plans tonight with my family/wife that we made a while back.
I have a test tomorrow morning that I have to study for... I have a paper due...
Any thing along the lines that you already have a life that has priorities that supercede your job.
Any boss that pushes after that ... Find a new job.

Really just need one magic word. “No.”
You aren’t scheduled, not your problem.

A little courtesy goes a long way with people you see on a near-daily basis. If you don’t give them the time of day why should they give it to you?

u/BuildingArmor 15h ago
Such as the courtesy to not message somebody about work when they aren't working? Or does it not go both ways?

u/DoritoDawg 8h ago
If coverage is needed, it’s the job of the manager to try and find a replacement. Have you ever worked a job that requires a certain amount of people before? The manager wasn’t rude, although they did beat around the bush a little. A simple response as to why goes a long way.

u/BuildingArmor 8h ago
So it doesn't go both ways? Ok
I left a job because of exactly this sort of thing. If you want me to be on call, offer to pay me to be on call and I'll consider it.
They know why, it's because you're not due to work that day. That's why they're messaging you.
You don't need an excuse, you don't need to justify yourself, you need to stand up for yourself and have some respect for your own time and your own wellbeing.

Did they say it was mandatory? They’re trying to ask them to come in. Good grief 😂
Nobody is justifying it. It’s human interaction you fucking bot 😂 I’m over this lol go ignore everyone in your life I guess

Yeah, and you have no obligation to genuflect and give them a kiss while you say no.

If you can't tell the difference between your family and friends, or your employer, then I'm not surprised you think you need to kiss your managers arse when they're bothering out outside of work.

u/BowwwwBallll 3h ago
Yeah, but you can say a polite “no.” Because next time you might be at loose ends and want the hours. Or you might just want the next shift to not be awkward.

u/BuildingArmor 3h ago
I think you might be replying to the wrong comment, because it's the other person who says you can't say a polite "no".

u/KareemOWheat 1d ago
I mean, no one should have to come up with fake excuses to say no to getting called in to work on your day off. People should be able to just say "no, it's my day off". But if you work in a country with at will employment, telling your boss comforting lies is often the best move
