Discussion Why aren’t more components built into the lid?

This is a genuine question. Why hasn’t a laptop been made that incorporates more components into the lid? I understand that there’s weight and size constraints, but for gaming laptops and mobile workstations where size isn’t the concern wouldn’t it make sense for better airflow?

A gaming laptop that uses the lid to house the GPU and the bottom for the CPU and other components makes a lot of sense to me. It would alleviate a lot of temperature issues that come with the laptop fans being on the bottom. I also think this would fit really well into the current repairable/modular laptop trend with Framework and such.

The main issue i see with this though is connecting them. I know motherboards pretty much combine all the components and the hinge connecting the lid and the base doesn’t exact give a lot of room.

Discussion I have a laptop with i3 12gen, 8gb ram, 500gb SSD. It's just one year old and can't able to run 5 tabs on chrome, lagging even just after reboot. Help how can I make it smooth?

I know you guys will ask me why tf you bought a i3. So there was a guy who said to me that he will help me buy my first ever laptop and I didn't have any info about laptop, processors and all. And he was a 'dalaal' ( i later found that) so i end up buying this shi.

Now please help me how can I make it more smooth, should I need to use any linux software or should I need to do any changes? Like i can bring it to a computer shop but I just want to be informed what things I need to change? Please help.

Edit: i don't use it for heavy purpose (it can't even handle lol) i just use it for normal web browsing.

Buying help Best Windows 7 laptop for native retro gaming? (€50 budget)

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a laptop for an authentic Windows 7 retro-gaming experience, and I'd love some recommendations from people who know this era better than I do.

I'm not looking for anything fancy like a Toshiba Qosmio. Even a cheap business or office laptop from the time would be perfectly fine. I mainly want some guidance on which brands, model series, and hardware specifications I should look for on eBay Germany.

My requirements:

- Budget: €50 maximum.

- OS: Windows 7, running natively on the hardware.

- Gaming: I'd like to play games from the Windows 7 era on the laptop itself.

- Display: 16:9 is a must.

- Portability: Preferably something reasonably lightweight, not a massive 20 kg desktop replacement.

- Aesthetics: I'm looking for that classic Frutiger Aero vibe!

I'm relatively new to pre-Windows 10 hardware. Unfortunately, I grew up with Windows 10, so anything older is largely unfamiliar territory for me. I'd love to experience this era properly, both in terms of the hardware and the games.

And before anyone suggests buying a modern laptop, installing Linux, and using emulators: that's not what I'm looking for. I specifically want authentic, native Windows 7 gaming on period-appropriate hardware.

I'm also aware of the security implications of running Windows 7, so there's no need to remind me about keeping it offline. I know what I'm getting into.

So, what would you recommend? Which laptop brands and model series offer the best value for around €50? Are there any underrated business laptops that would work well, or particular CPUs and GPUs I should look out for?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Buying help Need a used/refurbished laptop for schoolwork/general purpose

I need a durable, relatively lightweight laptop that I can use in a lab and for homework. Here is what I need; If I don't say otherwise then it is a non-negotiable feature:

  • 1920x1080 60Hz 14'' screen is preferred, but I don't mind 16:10 aspect ratio as long as it is decent res
  • DDR3/4 RAM modules with least 16 GB total (it can be like 1 socket and 1 soldered or whatever but I need to be able to upgrade it to 16GB)
  • Non-soldered SATA SSD 256GB minimum (or upgradable to one)
  • 40 Wh battery capacity minimum (removable ofc)
  • Any AMD/Intel 64 bit CPU (preferably Core i5/i7 of any generation)
  • Any AMD/Intel integrated GPU (No NVIDIA)
  • 3 USB A ports (I need to be using all 3 simultaneously. Docking ports are unwieldy and I hate carrying them. If this requirement ends up being too restrictive, I can settle for 2)
  • Ethernet port
  • Headphone jack
  • Any kind of wired video output (preferably HDMI)
  • SIM card slot for WWAN (optional)
  • Kensington cable lock slot, as I will be using my laptop in public spaces. No alternative locks.
  • Trackpoint (not required but I would prefer a laptop that has one)
  • It does not need an OS preinstalled. I'm going to be using Linux anyways

Please don't suggest anything that doesn't meet all of my requirements or an adapter in lieu of ethernet/headphone jack/etc

I am in the US and my budget is $400.

Edit: I don't actually mean a battery that you can take right out of the laptop. Something that is inside the case but is still easy to access fine.

Review Amd processors heating issue

Amd processors are the worst in terms for heat generation. My office laptop is heating like anything, when I run the same dev tools on my personal intel laptop it's not producing this much heat and performance is good same 16 gb ram. Just personal opinion

Buying help ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 vs E16 Gen 3 (Ultra 7 255H) — owners, how are they holding up?

Hi all,

I'm a cybersecurity engineering student deciding between the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 and the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3.

My budget 1500$

I'll mainly use it for IT and DevSecOps projects, and I'll carry it to campus daily.

If you own either one, I'd love to hear about:

  1. Thermals and fan noise under load

  2. Real-world battery life

  3. Screen quality

  4. Build quality and keyboard

  5. Linux support

  6. RAM/SSD upgradability

  7. Is the E16 worth the extra size, or is the E14 the better daily carry?

Any issues or things you wish you'd known before buying are very welcome. Thanks!

Discussion Can a ProArt laptop replace a gaming laptop for editing? Looking at the PX16

I do a lot of video editing and some 3D stuff, and I game maybe once a week, so I’m trying to avoid buying two machines. The ProArt PX16 with an RTX 5080 and 32GB RAM keeps popping up for creator work.
Do creator laptops actually perform better than gaming laptops for editing, or is it mostly the screen and build quality? And can it handle games properly when I want to switch off and play?

General question Is worth buying a cheap Thinkpad now just for web browsing if I'm planning to buy a good gaming laptop in the future ?

Hi guys I'm thinking on buying a cheap laptop just for browsing, doing posts on Reddit and things that I just can do on a PC and not on my ipad. My brother has a cheap Acer where sometimes I do things that are just possible on a PC he lives like 30 mins from here if I take the bus.

I have like 800 bucks from my last job I'm currently unemployed so I don't know when I will have money to a buy a good gaming laptop which I'm planning to spend more than 1000 euros because I want something good mainly for high single player gaming. I have an ipad air 4 should I just buy a keyboard case for like 50€ what would be the best thing to do ? What do you guys think .

Buying help MacBook m5 pro or surface ultra for electrical engineering course work.

• Upvotes

Ik this may be a niche question regarding electrical engineering laptops. I wanted to get a new laptop, and I’m currently doing my masters in ee. I wanted a new laptop but idk between either two. I wasn’t going to use either laptop for specifically engineering it was just supposed to be general use and then I would use it for coursework. But I’m stuck between the two because ik MacBook would have quite the trouble trying to run some ee programs but once again I’m not trying to get a laptop specifically for school so I’m stuck.

Any advice ?

Hardware Beware potential HP laptop owners

Bought an Omen Max 16 from HP in November 2025 (RTX 5070 Ti, 240Hz QHD+ display). I also bought HP's 2-year extended warranty, so it's covered through 2028.

At the beginning of June the screen stopped working properly and would constantly flash with horizontal boxes of static/noise. I contacted HP support, and over the next 3 months they had me do 12-15 sessions with different support reps, around 25 hours total, running the same troubleshooting over and over: Windows updates, reinstalling drivers, reinstalling Windows. One session took all day, and I had to take a day off work for it. About halfway through, I was begging them to let me send it in for a hardware fix, and they kept refusing. Near the end, agents would take remote control and sit there for 20 minutes doing nothing before ending the session.

After 3 months of this, I filed complaints with the BBB and my state's consumer protection agency. That finally got me a case manager, and I sent the laptop in at the start of September. They quoted 2 weeks for the repair, but one day I checked the status and the repair estimate had slipped to November.

Once I started calling and filing complaints about the November date, they offered a replacement. The offer letter said in writing: "the same model and all specifications will be of a matching capacity." I accepted on September 30. It then took nearly 3 weeks to arrive. What I got:

- RTX 5060 (8GB) instead of the 5070 Ti (12GB)

- 165Hz display instead of 240Hz

The GPU was the main reason I bought this laptop.

I've told my case manager I'm not accepting it and asked for a unit that actually matches. She expressed skepticism that what I was saying was true and said she'd get back to me.

If you're thinking about buying an HP Omen, beware. Mine isn't an isolated case; there are numerous similar stories out there of long repair waits and poor warranty support. Think hard about whether you want to rely on HP if something goes wrong, which seems very common. If you buy through them, you're rolling the dice, and the effort they'll put you through may not be worth your time.

My reasons for buying is to do homework, and game whenever there is time. I especially enjoy gaming during semester breaks so the gaming aspect to this laptop isn’t going completely to waste.

Buying help [Advice Needed] Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 vs HP EliteBook 845 G9 – Heart says ThinkPad, but specs say HP?

Hey everyone! I’m torn between two options for my development and freelancing work. I personally love ThinkPads, but the HP is offering better hardware for the same budget.

Here are the specs:

Option A: Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2

Processor: Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U (8C/16T, Zen 3)
RAM/Storage: 16GB DDR4 / 512GB NVMe SSD
Display: 14" FHD (1920x1080) 16:9 Touch

Option B: HP EliteBook 845 G9

Processor: Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U (8C/16T, Zen 3+)
RAM/Storage: 16GB DDR5 / 256GB NVMe SSD
Display: 14" WUXGA (1920x1200) 16:10 IPS

My Dilemma:

The ThinkPad is ready to go out of the box with more storage and legendary build quality.

The HP gives me a newer Zen 3+ architecture, much better integrated graphics (Radeon 680M), faster DDR5 RAM, and a gorgeous 16:10 screen, but I have to manage the storage and RAM configuration.

Which one should I pick for heavy coding and multitasking? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Buying help Lightweight Laptop recommendations

Which lightweight laptop is better

Hello everyone! I'll be an upcoming computer engineering student and im planning to buy a laptop that wouldn't exceed a 100k php budget🥹 I'm currently eyeing the Lenovo Yoga slim 7i or the Asus zenbook a14, which one do you think is better? I just want a laptop that could handle mild rendering, video editing and coding but is still lightweight (pretty non negotiable) since I commute for 4 hrs a day 😭

Buying help New Home/Travel Laptop Upgrade Suggestion

I currently own an HP 14cf1062st laptop I purchased from Staples back in 2019 for about $500. I have a desktop I use for most of my main computing work, so this is really just a "backup" and "travel" laptop I use when I travel or just want to do some work while on the sofa watching football.

I also have a set-up in a vacation home where I bring it and hook it to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse via a USB hub.

This HP laptop has been fairly reliable, but it is definitely a bit "lacking" in the performance tier (which I knew when we purchased). It has: RAM: 8GB Ram; DRIVE: 256GB SSD; CPU: Intel Core i5-8265U ; Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620 processor. Display: 14-inch diagonal HD (1366 x 768)

It has been fairly reliable, but definitely "struggles' under Windows 11 and Office 365 due to the low RAM and slower processor. Screen size of 14" diag. is fine for my needs (I have a larger monitor when using as a "desktop"), although would be willing to go maybe to 15" diag., but not much bigger to keep compact for travel. Also, the Wireless seems to sometimes struggle and is often slow (its probably an older Wifi card since its a 2019 machine).

Here is what I am looking for:
Nice quality laptop to run Windows 11 (Home version is fine) and Office 365.
Stick with a 14" to 15" screen, high-resolution screen.
NOT Touch Screen (don't use it, and find it distracting/annoying)
32 GB RAM
1TB SSD
Faster CPU and better graphics processing
Needs to be fairly light and thin (current HP is about 3 lbs I think)
Good battery
Improved Wifi speed/capabilities
Must Have: RJ45 connector for hardwiring my home network cable and HDMI Port, plus a few extra USBA and USBC ports, including one that can be wired to a hub that can both power the laptop and also drive a keyboard and monitor.

Price: Would like to keep under $1,000 if possible.

I only use this for basic web browsing and Microsoft Office Apps.
No Gaming, high-end graphics, or heavy-duty programming or heavy AI use at all
Just want a nice, fast, dependable Windows Laptop that is light and compact and reliable for "home use". This is NOT a corporate machine, so don't need any advanced management features.

The HP has worked well, but I am open to looking at other main brands such as Dell, Lenovo, or ASUS.

Hoping to narrow down and then look for a good deal on Cyber Day later this year.

Thanks for the help.

Michael

Buying help Dell laptop

Last week I started looking for a new laptop. I need it mainly for studying, preparing presentations, writing essays and watching videos. I also use it for browsing the Internet and communicating with my friends.

At the moment, I have an old laptop. It is quite slow, the battery doesn’t last very long, and sometimes it takes ages to open different programmes. That’s why I’m thinking about buying a new Dell laptop. I’ve heard that Dell computers are reliable and good for studying.

However, there are so many different models that I don’t know which one to choose. I want a laptop with enough memory, a good battery and a fast processor. I don’t need an expensive gaming laptop, but I’d like it to work well for several years.

My parents think I should buy a cheaper model because I mainly use a computer for university work. I agree that I don’t need the most powerful laptop, but I also don’t want to regret my choice later.

What do you think? Is Dell a good choice for a student? Which laptop would you recommend? Is it worth spending more money on a better model?
