As a non-native english speaker "slap me daddy" also sounds really weird and not sexy at all.

59

u/DexgamingX 8h ago

It should sound weird, the whole daddy/mummy dynamic is gross

3

u/Nikmido 5h ago

To you, no need to kink shame

5

Would it still be a kink if there was absolutely no shame?

16

Well the literal translation is "sla me papa" but it sounds gross either way

Nah that's a pronoun. Call this thing "this/that"

As someone who is Dutch I hate these memes because I simply cannot comprehend what's so funny about any of this 😭

135

u/oogrug 9h ago edited 9h ago

dutch orthography looks "silly" to non-dutch speaking anglophones because, among other things, multiple words are close enough to english that they read like misspellings (serieus, kan, probleem) or slang (dat dat). then there are words whose spellings don't make intuitive sense to many anglophones (mbt). and while people who read dutch know that oo and ee represent /oː/ and /eː/, many anglophones read them as /uː/ and /i/; importantly, when oo and ee function as digraphs in english, the words often feel silly, cute, or otherwise unserious (poop, boob, goo; pee, wee, bee)

15

u/Nigel2602 6h ago

To be fair, mbt is an abbreviation for 'met betrekking tot' (Wilders even spelled it wrong, it should be m.b.t.). Spelling a full word like that wouldn't make sense in Dutch either.

5

u/LaunchTransient 6h ago

Wilders even spelled it wrong

Twitter had a character limit of 140 characters (though when Wilders posted this the limit was up to 280), which encouraged people to cut superfluous punctuation. I can only imagine that is the reason.

1

u/a-stack-of-masks 3h ago

Nah ink is duur fam. aint nobody got time or budget for interpunctie.

1

u/Any_Description_4204 5h ago

Nah most people don’t take the effort to put periods in abbreviations, especially on mobile when you have to switch to another keyboard for it

1

u/LaunchTransient 5h ago

The full stop is standard in the bottom right of mobile keyboards.

19

u/Ishmael_1974 7h ago

Dutch was invented by a German who was pretending he could speak English

10

u/Catch-Straight 5h ago

As if English isn't the bastard child of french and german

1

u/sempowalxochitl 4h ago

Mbt is an abbreviation of ā€œmet betrekking totā€ which means ā€œwith respect toā€Ā

1

u/Insidiatori02 8m ago

Regarding - fits way better

34

u/BadMeatPuppet 9h ago

I know zero Dutch, but due to the similarities between the two languages, I can read and understand some Dutch sentences; however, with the English pronunciation in my head, it sounds ridiculous, like a parody of English.

10

u/shiggyhisdiggy 9h ago

The Dutch pronunciation isn't much better, have you heard them speak? Watched a Dutch horror movie about a lion once and was laughing my ass off because every other sentence sounded like someone failing to speak English

5

u/MericArda 7h ago

And our Gs sound like gargling on air.

1

u/Cheetah_05 5h ago

Just be from the good part of the country

34

u/onarainyafternoon 7h ago

It’s only funny if you’re an anglophone and use English very regularly, but also at the same time don’t know Dutch. The only reason this is such a funny thing for so many people is because so many people are fluent in English as a first or second language. So then they look at the way Dutch is spelled and spoken, and it appears like Jar Jar Binks trying to speak English. I admit that I think it’s hysterical, but it’s got nothing to do with thinking you guys are below me or anything; it’s just funny from my own perception. Another commenter said it’s like the uncanny valley for English speakers and I think that’s a really great way of describing it.

13

u/Dismal_Macaron_5542 7h ago

I will say, as someone who speaks both English and German but not Dutch, I think its extra funny because I can basically understand everything

2

u/a-stack-of-masks 3h ago

The real flex is understanding spoken Frisian or written Limburgish.

In case you're wondering, speaking Limburgish is spelled "plaat kalle" with modifiers depending on what town you're from. I'd write out some Frisian but my phone doesn't support Abyssal Script.

4

u/Slight-Violinist-575 7h ago

I am not an anglophone and it still is funny af. The only requirement for the funnies is fluency in English

3

u/BlondeBubbel 4h ago

I’m Dutch and that’s exactly it

1

u/Repulsive_Wafer_6468 3h ago

Funny because English is actually the Frankstein language here

10

u/LilianaNecromancer 8h ago

We hebben een serieus probleem

To an English speaker just reads like silly English. That’s it

8

u/MisterDutch93 8h ago

They’re reading Dutch with English pronunciation and inflection, which sounds funny to them because it almost makes sense while being gibberish at the same time.

5

u/komodopal 9h ago

Since Dutch is so similar to english it sat at the uncanny valley of language familiarity for english speakers. Except it makes them sound funny to english speakers.

7

u/Tricky_Challenge9959 9h ago

It reads like really bad English and German. It has a similar vibe as the langauge in r/ssdfg

3

u/RaptorCelll 6h ago

I'm sorry to tell you Dutch speakers, but to English speakers (Germans sound off if it's the same for you guys) but your language is intelligible enough to us that it just looks like silly English.

2

u/Catch-Straight 5h ago

I imagine it's also only funny when reading it.

2

u/a-stack-of-masks 4h ago

I wonder if the reason so few Dutch people get this is because being bilingual is the minimum here. I think English would be similar for us if we didn't see any until we were adults, but by 12 everyone speaks it (and probably a bit of German, French, maybe some Spanish or Latin, plus wherever extra languages you took from home like Bahasa, Turkish or Arab) so the only funny language to us is Afrikaans, which is often closer to Dutch than Plaat or Frysk are.

Which is all to say that maybe us proper Europeans are just too educated to get your jokes lmao get dunketh upon.

1

u/Such_Split997 20m ago edited 13m ago

To me it always comes across like if an Italian were to make a huge fuss about Portugese being different.Ā

Like to us Afrikaans resembles how they used to do racist stereotypes in comic strips , from the word order to elements like the double deny, and we don't have like a bunch of memes about Afrikaans speakers.Ā

Meanwhile the South African headline "Hitler Dood , wat nou" , which is objectively a funny title in standard Dutch because "wat nou?" is informal to us ( like "now wot ?" ) ( but just "what happens next?" to South Africans )Ā  , has become a meme with English speakers thinking it's Dutch and therefore funny.Ā

1

u/PaleDark4 6h ago

As someone who speaks Dutch but is not Dutch it's sometimes really funny

1

u/godverdejezushey 4h ago

It's the same way they say poopenfarten for German

1

u/Floordove 3h ago

"hahaha ik win van jou neger GEKOLONISEERD!'.

These are all very sad children that have, and not will ever, have a developed brain.

1

u/Insidiatori02 3m ago

Moet dit?

1

u/Solnight99 3h ago

English has the same heritage as Dutch on one side, but all of the "sophisticated" words are Latin-derived through French, so Dutch looks similar to English without the Latin. Also, the spelling is similar to English, but in the same way that English gibberish (different languages have different gibberish) is similar to English, so it looks funny.

1

u/Methanator 2h ago

despite the many French (and North Germanic) influences on English, it is still a West Germanic language. So English has the same heritage as Dutch on both sides

1

u/Solnight99 2h ago

If we're being that technical, languages don't have "sides" like people. I explained it that way because it makes more sense to a layman.

1

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 3h ago

It looks like someone is writing in an intentionally silly way, like OWO speak if you're familiarl. it's just legible enough to know the words but spelled weirdly

0

u/MericArda 7h ago

As a fellow Dutchman I can never take a yelling in Dutch seriously.

u/shinjidrivekari 9h ago

ts language CANNOT be real bro

92

u/RespUnin 9h ago

That's Afrikaans but but that's a Dutch enough language

26

u/_WdMalus_ 9h ago

The title works in either

17

u/MisterDutch93 8h ago

It would’ve been ā€œWat nu?ā€ instead of ā€œWat nou?ā€ in Dutch. The word ā€œnouā€ is less formal and more common tongue, so it’s not used in print like this.

0

u/_WdMalus_ 5h ago

Broski it still works. A newpaper title doesnt hace to be formal, especially if it is rather old. Dutch is my mother tongue, no need to explain its registers to me

5

u/MisterDutch93 5h ago edited 5h ago

I’m just saying you wouldn’t see a newspaper use ā€œwat nouā€ in this way. BROSKI. It’s because Afrikaans was influenced by English (compare with ā€œwhat nowā€).

1

u/JasperJ 2h ago

Newspaper headlines always have to be formal especially if they’re rather old.

1

u/dutch_mapping_empire 4h ago

''wat nou'' isn't really written language in dutch, it's very often said like that but written is just ''wat nu''

-5

12

u/spawnmorezerglings 9h ago

That's just blatantly false: american vs british english would be more like dutch vs flemish, dutch and afrikaans have diverged much more

2

u/_WdMalus_ 9h ago

Dutch vs Flemish is more different than an english speaker could dream of

3

u/NikoB0t 9h ago

i think its more like spanish VS mexican

-1

u/LITTLEOWL031026 6h ago

I know it's "Hitler Dead: What Now?" but to me it looks like "Hitler Dude: Whadda ya Know?"

38

6

u/dutch_mapping_empire 4h ago

watching guardians of the galaxy as a kid confused the fuck out of me bc ''groot'' just means ''big'' in dutch but i was like how did they sneak a dutch word into an american movie

2

u/deletemyaccountplzz 2h ago

The pronounciation is different though. More lik groat. With oa as in boat

2

u/dutch_mapping_empire 2h ago

i know how it's pronounced i am dutch

1

u/deletemyaccountplzz 2h ago

I know. I am just adding context

11

u/DJPizzaRocks27 6h ago

as a south african seeing dutch always gives me a jump scare im so used to afrikaans

4

u/Beneficial_Ad4683 3h ago

As a dutch person seeing Geert Wilders on the timeline does the same for me. He's like the figurehead of the being racist political party. Also he's the only member of his party.

2

u/Pristine-Lie-3560 4h ago

ok but is it more like American vs British, Castilian vs Chilean, or English vs French?

7

u/DustyBones272 3h ago

People who speak Dutch and Afrikaans can read eachothers languages and usually get the general idea of what the intended message is

It's not like how Norwegians and Swedes can have an actual conversation with eachother in their own languages. To a Dutch person speaking Algemeen Nederlands, reading Afrikaans is more akin to reading some of the more out-there regional dialects in de Achterhoek or the south of Limburg. There's some recognition of structure, but the major differences in spelling and vocabulary

3

u/deranton 2h ago

I can have a perfectly fine conversation with one party speaking Dutch and the other Afrikaans. It's just that sometimes a very common word is completely unknown.

Lower Saxon or Limburgish is way farther removed from standard Dutch than Afrikaans is. I would also say that Swedish-Norwegian is also more of a difference, but that's a harder one to place.

1

u/l339 3h ago

Afrikaans is so weird, like I can listen to it and then barely not understand what people are saying. Like talking Dutch in a jibberish way

2

u/NLQuincy 2h ago

It's like a toddler stopped learning how to talk properly after learning basic babbling.

Afrikaans has a lot of grammatical things that are oversimplified, wrong, and nonsensical in Dutch.

11

u/Fufu_kunnn 2h ago

This whole comment section and post is so weird to read when you're a South African. Ek kan wat julle beteken vertstaan, maar soms julle net yeet focken letters binne as-

(jammer enige Afrikaaners wie lees dit. Jy kan Engels is my eerste taal sien lmao)

3

u/Faces_Dancer 2h ago

Als nederlander is Zuid Afrikaans ook een ervaring om te lezen, je verliest me helemaal in de laatste zin

2

u/Fufu_kunnn 2h ago

LOL For what it's worth, that may just be my fault since Afrikaans is one of my worst subjects in school/Dis okei, Afrikaans is my slegte taal so dis nie rerig jou probleem nie(ek hoop dit nie sarkasties kyk nie-)

2

u/mrnx136 2h ago

Afrikaans lijkt Nederlands met dyslectische grammatica

1

u/brommpot 1h ago

If you just speak in your head phonetically, and hear it back it's quite understandable

2

u/Mauy90 1h ago

Oh? Hij verloor mij bij het eerste woord 🤣

1

u/Correct_Internet_769 1h ago

Ik denk dat die laatste zin betekent: "immers voor de Zuid Afrikanen die dit lezen. Je kan zien dat entels mijn eerste taal is"

3

u/DiamondDramatic9551 1h ago

Fun fact: Afrikaans is closer to Standard Dutch than several of the dialects in the Netherlands themselves.Ā

2

u/tree-hut 1h ago

Afrikaans is jar jar dutch

1

u/Casartelli 1h ago

Ik kan het prima lezen :)

1

u/BunnyWithGunny 22m ago

Afrikaans is beter te begrijpen dan Fries, dus maak je maar geen zorgen.

9

u/Darthplagueis13 5h ago

That's pretty harsh.

Jar Jar Binks deserves better than to be compared to Geert Wilders.

6

u/Springstof 2h ago

Waarom is het altijd die haarbal van een Geert Wilders in dit soort posts?

11

u/Cusi_Yupanqui 4h ago

I know everybody that finds this funny has no idea how Dutch is actually pronounced

I usually pronouce it like "du-tsh"

I mean, I get why English speaking people find Dutch funny as a Dutch person myself. Altough I don’t think Geert Wilders (the guy in the picture) is quite as…. Funny. Or likeable.

3

u/SnooCheesecakes7545 1h ago edited 1h ago

It's funny to americans because americans are ignorant beyond belief. They 're sounding out foreign languages with their own vowels and then think that's how it actually sounds.

Not saying much about this, but the point of memes is a shared reference that through repetition, imitation and spread becomes understood.

Any successful meme is continuously recycled and regurgitated. The word literally means "something imitated"Ā

Nah, it's not just the template that's a meme. It's the joke about your language that's a meme too.

5

u/onarainyafternoon 7h ago

That’s just the nature of Reddit, man. Jokes get recycled constantly because most people don’t wanna put any effort into being original.

5

u/kikikza 7h ago

I agree making fun of the language is overstated, I never see anyone talk about the food situation there

As a Dutchman once put it to me: "we see food as sustenance over here. You seldom see Dutch restaurants when travelling abroad"

3

u/Catch-Straight 5h ago

That Dutchman is wrong. It's just that other countries do food better than us.

Which is fine, we happily eat their food. It's the snacks where we shine though. All these people from other countries with their full meals. We all know a hobby is best as a hobby, not as a job. The real love for food is put in snacks. And together with the Brits we got the best sausage rolls in the world.

The genetics of the northern Netherlands are crazy. People keep saying they've conquered it but in the meantime there's enough lineages going back to pre agriculture that they're basically a genomic backup system that gives sailing lessons.

When the plague returns Ljouwert is going to rule the Benelux if it is still unflooded.

Definitely a solid improvement over German.

7

u/jasp_er 4h ago

Hé dat is onaardig. Nederlands is best een mooie taal, ook uitgeschreven😠

0

u/Vratha92 4h ago

Look I’m sure you guys are rlly nice people but do something abt the writing bro maybe add some cool letters like ß or smth 😭

3

u/DustyBones272 3h ago

We have the IJ, which is actually a single letter in Dutch! In handwriting, it can look a bit like Ćæ

For example, Iceland becomes IJsland (note the capitalisation)

2

u/Erichteia 3h ago

We have a bunch of additional digraphs (letter pairs that form a single sound), like ei/ij, ou/au, ui.... They are basically similar to eigh (as in sleigh), ea, or ou (as in out) in English, and thus sound as a single 'vowel'. However, many English speakers try to pronunciate them as single letters, which make the words sound very alien. But in reality, Dutch really sounds like English once spoken. You can very often get away with just saying the Dutch word when you don't know the English one, and people will understand you.

0

u/ItsWickie 4h ago

We literary have the letter B in our alphabet and in our words

2

u/jadehairpin 4h ago

I don’t think that’s a B

1

u/ItsWickie 3h ago

Wait, it’s not?

Am I stupid?

1

u/Empty_Atmosphere_392 3h ago

It’s not the letter B, it’s ß. It has more of an S sound

I mean, I wouldn't say stupid

4

u/itsanothersidetothis 4h ago

Persoonlijke voorkeur ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

5

u/Cusi_Yupanqui 4h ago

Waar hebt jij het er in godsnaam over? Hoe is Nederlands anders in dit aspect? Er zijn veel lettercombinaties die specifiek zijn voor de Nederlandse taal. En op welke manier ziet een taal er lelijk uit? Als er een lelijke schriftelijke taal zou moeten zijn, dan is het Welsh, maar dat heeft alles te maken met het perspectief van jouw moedertaal.

0

u/Vratha92 4h ago

For me it’s the frequent doubling of vowels and also just that some words are really similar to English and to my english speaker brain look butchered/funny.

3

u/Erichteia 3h ago

0

u/Vratha92 3h ago
