One jump and you blind everyone with smoke, burn 200$, get assaulted by the FAA (they will kill you first), crush a minicooper and flip over a highway guardrail.
This is exactly the mentality I have about why we'll never have flying cars.
Normal car accidents can already cause enough damage to life and property.
A drunk driver with an actual flying car like those in the movies? No thanks.
Plus, you'd need a genuine pilots license or hire someone who does and can actually fly the car.
It has to be rated safe to fly by an inspector.
You have to have all the car shit, registration, license etc.
You have to send it to the manufacturer and have very qualified, expensive people to repair half the damn thing.
Mechanics would run the risk of just getting you killed.
You have to request access to the damn air.
You have to risk in-air collisions if you decide to fly higher.
You can't fly low because it's considered a decently large aircraft.
You can't safely look downwards.
There is zero help outside landing it yourself, find clearance on your own.
Safely landing a damaged car would be a nightmare as one damaged thruster would fuck you all-the-way over. Basically making every damaged landing a crash landing.
Tesla cars aren't making mistakes as well. Having a service like the Cybercab but flying doesn't seem out of reach to me considering how well those work. And aircrafts already don't make mistakes, you forget most the times planes fly they're in autonomous mode? And even then, there's an automatic landing system if needed. Damn, we already have autonomous Black Hawks in the army. The only real challenge here would be a very trustworthy technology for those flying cars, and also not being as expensive neither as maintenance heavy as an helicopter.
But realistically flying cars would just be smaller helicopters. Brazil's Embraer has a eVTOL model which is called a "flying car", I think that's the further we will go with a production mode (and it seems good enough honestly). Those just aren't a vehicle you own to go to work I believe, more like a cheaper aerial cab than a proper helicopter (city focused btw)
I'm not sure you understood what I said. You're going over things I've already mentioned.
I'm speaking to the person that says that we dont need anything to fly a car and the AI will do everything and that's not and will not be the case at all.
P.S. Tesla cars have made mistakes, and still do make mistakes all the time.
You just never hear of them because they never end as a crash. They're mundane/low threat so the driver just takes over when the autopilot deactivates.
You're never gonna see on the news that a Telsa accidently took a turn onto a construction road because there wasn't a sign indicating it, or that it drove down the middle of a two lane road because it's a side road with no markings. The driver just starts driving it.
