The thing people don't realize is, "flying cars" have been feasible for a while but no companies are investing in their production because they would require a pilot's licence to operate.
111
u/Livid_Technical_Pand 15h ago
Right? Like the average commuter probably breaks a dozen rules of driving on their drive in to the office in the morning. Now imagine a million of them over a city, where the consequences of sleep deprevation, or dropping the coffee cup are 100x. Not to mention the noise, pollution, and chaos. Also the danger of them just falling out of the sky when joe bloe doesn't get their thrusters repaired. There's a reason that planes require such strict maintenance logs, and pilots need intensive training and logging their flight hours.
23
u/Banana-Oni 11h ago
Even if none of what you just said was an issue, can you imagine the cost? Even aside from the vehicle, fuel, and maintenance.. flying car insurance 😰
19
u/sudanesegamer 13h ago
And new laws would have to be written which would be nearly impossible to enforce. What if someone flies over your house, what if people crash into a building on the 6th floor, what if we end up with a car crashing into a plane.
15
u/Deathless616 12h ago
Yeah, I've seen endless YouTube videos of actual flying cars, mostly in a rotor drone style Formfactor. All of those were able to lift of, hover, gain height, turn around, have a stable flight
The Tesla thing is merely jumping.
The brothers wright would have had a much simpler life in this timeline, just jump from a chair and the idiots would think you flew.

This is exactly the mentality I have about why we'll never have flying cars. Normal car accidents can already cause enough damage to life and property. A drunk driver with an actual flying car like those in the movies? No thanks.

u/Warbot_Titan 5h ago
so long as you remove the human driver factor, you can do it,
just has to be automated, and managed either centrally or in a network of local carsdon't get me wrong, I don't see actual cars that can also fly any time soon,

- Plus, you'd need a genuine pilots license or hire someone who does and can actually fly the car.
- It has to be rated safe to fly by an inspector.
- You have to have all the car shit, registration, license etc.
- You have to send it to the manufacturer and have very qualified, expensive people to repair half the damn thing.
- Mechanics would run the risk of just getting you killed.
- You have to request access to the damn air.
- You have to risk in-air collisions if you decide to fly higher.
- You can't fly low because it's considered a decently large aircraft.
- You can't safely look downwards.
- There is zero help outside landing it yourself, find clearance on your own.
- Safely landing a damaged car would be a nightmare as one damaged thruster would fuck you all-the-way over. Basically making every damaged landing a crash landing.
So, so many things.

Let me see someone in stage taking ads showing off the inside of the car, then get in, drive away and do a flip. Than I will believe this.

I think the demo vehicle weighs about a third as much as anything resembling a production vehicle is going to weigh. Which makes sense when you look at the underside and see there is no battery which is usually the heaviest component of an EV. I don't believe that thruster technology could pull off the same performance, both acceleration and falling with style, when the car weighs 3x as much.
Not to mention the test car had double the thruster fuel capacity. And also the fuel is compressed nitrogen gas at 10,000psi, which takes many hours to fill and buys you 5-10 seconds of use. I don't know who in their right mind would want to drive and/or share the roads with a nitrogen bomb that can supposedly accelerate hard enough to cause blackouts in some drivers.
It's futurism tech slop for people who don't care, designed to pump up Tesla stock prices for whatever Elon wants to do next. And no, Elon, we didn't forget about all the other heinous stuff you did, a rolling chassis falling off a platform and flipping around a bunch is not a good enough distraction from the racism, transphobia, pedophilia, and whatever the fuck else.
Praise the engineers who made this thing, not the ketamine-fueled man baby who still thinks money buys popularity and acceptance.

People do not understand that there are laws that require you to announce every flight, regardless of you are 1 or 1000ft up before it's made. Anybody who sees you flying can call the FAA and if you haven't received approval before leaving the ground, your shits gonna get fucked.

-1
u/Imn1che 15h ago
There’s nothing fascinating. It’s a massive pressurised tank feeding high pressure gas into nozzles and launching something. Shit like this has existed for decades.
Why has no one put it into a car yet? BECAUSE WHY WOULD ANY ONE BOTHER? The best you can do is hop over something’s, like in the demo. What use does that have? You’re also sacrificing more than half the car’s space and weight for all systems, it’s crazy expensive, and you need to recharge it after every jump. It’s a useless gimmick

A: hopping. Not quite falling with style (gliding) and not sustained flight, but definitely hopping
B: can only buy this rocket trim by invite only. “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it” Made to order. This is not advertised as a mass production vehicle
C: the real product people preordered years ago is the non rocket version. The mass production version will have the wall crawling fans for increased traction and a pop out spoiler.
D: cyberpunk was a fucking nightmare of self inflicted wounds. Quite possibly will take the throne of “worst car” from the gremlin. Probably the last time Elon gets to make decisions on mass production.

Making a car sized flying thing has been possible for decades, but it really isn't the hard part.
It was done with off the shelf drone parts straped to a bathtub 8 years ago by a guy in his garage.
The hard part is making it a real transportation device at a reasonable price, with useful autonomy, with some amount of reliability, without being too dangerous and with a legal framework for operating the vehicle.
