People aren't seriously thinking this are they?

Like it doesn't take much thinking to realise how quickly that burns through its resources just to do that lol.

u/vextryyn 22h ago

I mean, they did say its for special contracts only ,so rich people how want an expensive cool new toy to play with for a weekend, get bored and sail on their yacht

2

u/Drfoxthefurry 20h ago

Limited run (so only 100 or whatever) and only for backers is what I heard

13

u/PktTracer 14h ago

No one is really thinking this, it’s just more Elon hate slop

0

u/jewbaaaca 7h ago

Personally I think it’s totally fine to hate on Elon after all the bullshit he’s said and done these past several year.

0

u/PktTracer 7h ago

Such as… (I don’t keep up with all the internet drama)

-2

u/TheyHavePinball 14h ago

False. Two people I know passionately dismissed my meme of this. One of them I really like. People will look past anything to just watch the next circus it seems.

10

u/Independent_Mud2794 21h ago

Oh they do. I saw so damn comments drooling over Elon thinking they will get a flying car. Just browse some posts, so many idiots think that publicity stuns was a flying car, not just a car jumping and slowly falling as a one trick pony.

5

u/Some-Opinion8391 21h ago

The Roadster he promised in 2017 still hasn't come out. Now they think he's going to deliver on a roadster that jumps?!?! 🤣

-8

u/Yankee831 20h ago

Nah man it literally jumped and did a flip over those other Teslas, and It also drove up the loop ramp. It was pretty cool ngl.

-2

u/Independent_Mud2794 20h ago

You can drive up a loop with a skateboard with enough speed, it’s just physics.

1

u/Yankee831 11h ago

They didn’t drive fast…

5

u/Mite-o-Dan 18h ago

In 1969 people thought we'd have flying cars and living on Mars by the year 2000. We just landed on the moon. Seemed logical to do in 30 years.

So, why wouldnt they think that now?

7

u/KevinFlantier 20h ago

Even if you could somehow consume the fuel slowly. Think of the damage idiots with regular cars can do and imagine a car with 4 thrusters that are basically welding torches on steroid.

6

u/It_just_works_bro 18h ago

One jump and you blind everyone with smoke, burn 200$, get assaulted by the FAA (they will kill you first), crush a minicooper and flip over a highway guardrail.

4

u/SubstancialLuck1000 17h ago

This is exactly the mentality I have about why we'll never have flying cars. Normal car accidents can already cause enough damage to life and property. A drunk driver with an actual flying car like those in the movies? No thanks.

4

u/Warbot_Titan 14h ago

so long as you remove the human driver factor, you can do it,
just has to be automated, and managed either centrally or in a network of local cars

don't get me wrong, I don't see actual cars that can also fly any time soon,
but there may be drone taxis within the next 10 years

1

u/It_just_works_bro 14h ago

I could see public tranport flying, but not something as common as a car.

u/It_just_works_bro 17h ago edited 16h ago
  • Plus, you'd need a genuine pilots license or hire someone who does and can actually fly the car.
  • It has to be rated safe to fly by an inspector.
  • You have to have all the car shit, registration, license etc.
  • You have to send it to the manufacturer and have very qualified, expensive people to repair half the damn thing.
  • Mechanics would run the risk of just getting you killed.
  • You have to request access to the damn air.
  • You have to risk in-air collisions if you decide to fly higher.
  • You can't fly low because it's considered a decently large aircraft.
  • You can't safely look downwards.
  • There is zero help outside landing it yourself, find clearance on your own.
  • Safely landing a damaged car would be a nightmare as one damaged thruster would fuck you all-the-way over. Basically making every damaged landing a crash landing.

So, so many things.

We're in the age of autonomous cars, you don't need any of that. You forget we already have cars without steering wheel driving through all the USA?

3

u/It_just_works_bro 16h ago edited 16h ago

You do realize you still need all of that with an autonomous pilot, right?

You're not owning an aircraft without doing everything, and that's even if they can get an the AI to seamlessly fly it.

Keep in mind, it has to never make mistakes. Aircraft aren't like cars. There is zero margin of error.

People are paid more money than you've ever seen in your life to make sure that the only issue a plane has is the human portion.

If it makes any mistakes whatsoever, that's the lives of everyone aboard.

Self-driving AI makes mistakes constantly, but all the car does is back up and try again, or turn off the self-driving function.

An aircraft would simply crash and you'd be consumed by fire in a few seconds, or it will turn off and hand the controls to... You.

Even autonomous aircraft and airliners still have flight controls. Anything can happen.

0

u/LuizFelipe1906 16h ago

Tesla cars aren't making mistakes as well. Having a service like the Cybercab but flying doesn't seem out of reach to me considering how well those work. And aircrafts already don't make mistakes, you forget most the times planes fly they're in autonomous mode? And even then, there's an automatic landing system if needed. Damn, we already have autonomous Black Hawks in the army. The only real challenge here would be a very trustworthy technology for those flying cars, and also not being as expensive neither as maintenance heavy as an helicopter.

But realistically flying cars would just be smaller helicopters. Brazil's Embraer has a eVTOL model which is called a "flying car", I think that's the further we will go with a production mode (and it seems good enough honestly). Those just aren't a vehicle you own to go to work I believe, more like a cheaper aerial cab than a proper helicopter (city focused btw)

2

u/It_just_works_bro 15h ago

I'm not sure you understood what I said. You're going over things I've already mentioned.

I'm speaking to the person that says that we dont need anything to fly a car and the AI will do everything and that's not and will not be the case at all.

P.S. Tesla cars have made mistakes, and still do make mistakes all the time.

You just never hear of them because they never end as a crash. They're mundane/low threat so the driver just takes over when the autopilot deactivates.

You're never gonna see on the news that a Telsa accidently took a turn onto a construction road because there wasn't a sign indicating it, or that it drove down the middle of a two lane road because it's a side road with no markings. The driver just starts driving it.

-1

u/LuizFelipe1906 16h ago

We're in the age of autonomous vehicles. Now think a little more why flying cars are highly possible in the future

5

u/Mrsoandso6 19h ago

Torches? LOL, it’s all compressed air my guy. And it refills itself.
Something tells me that the few of these that actually get made won’t be able to be doing backflips going down the highway.

1

u/KevinFlantier 19h ago

Alright I stand corrected. The images I saw were probably edited to look like rocket plumes.

It makes tons more sense that it would be compressed air, and it confirms that it's not a viable project and yet another fundraising scheme from one of musk's company and/or a pr campaign to make musk look cool and let us forget he is a nazi that aims to hoards all the money in the world.

3

u/androodle2004 iwrestledabeartwice 13h ago

It’s a cool car that goes upside down and hops. I understand not liking the dude, but when you are trying this hard to connect everything he does to “schemes” you just look dumb.

3

u/SizzlingPancake Tech Tips 17h ago

Or.... It's a halo product meant to promote the brand.

4

u/Alltime-Zenith_1 17h ago

If you couldn't understand that it was cold gas from the get go, you're in no position to speculate whether the project is viable or not.

1

u/tgsoon2002 6h ago

People hate elon so much they come uo with wild theory and refuse to see what is the reality.

2

u/jello_kraken 5h ago

The jets only last a few seconds, take six hours to fill up, isn't street legal and will only go to a few private buyers for an unknown, unbelievable price.

It's a cool gimmick, but that's it. I mention that and tend to get downvoted by the hype train saying "don't ruin our fun!!".

I'm not sure if the one with just the bottom fan ("fan car" tech has been seeing since the 60s in racing) would be street legal (they never are, even illegal in almost all racing), but I would love to drive one....

4

u/3zprK Lurking Peasant 19h ago

Again.... idiots are everywhere

4

u/AncleJack Nice meme you got there 22h ago

I've heard someone calculated it had like 10 seconds of usage from the tanks so one kick flip and Ur done

4

u/Mrsoandso6 19h ago

Until it refills its self. It’s just compressed air.

1

u/Cthulhu_Dreams_ 19h ago

You wana drive around with several 10,000psi tanks next to you?

1

u/Mrsoandso6 18h ago

Yea because everyone and their cat will have one of these and driving around everywhere.
5 rich people will have them and auto pilot them for their rich friends.

3

u/Tweeter__83 15h ago

None of the variants with thrusters will be eligible for registration... So they won't be driving them around anywhere on public streets anyways.

-1

u/Alltime-Zenith_1 16h ago

You wanna drive around with a 15 gallon tank of extremely flammable liquid? Oh or perhaps you want to drive around with a slab of lithium that will burn even underwater? Good luck. Maybe you're better off just bicycling to wherever you wanna go if you're this paranoid.

2

u/Cthulhu_Dreams_ 16h ago

If you're comparing a tank of gasoline that might ignite, to a tank of extremely compressed air that will absolutely fail if even minimally damaged... Maybe you'd be better off taking a break from the internet.

1

u/ScorchedCSGO 7h ago

Your gasoline tank leaks, you might die. Your compressed air tank leaks, you might breathe in air.

1

u/Cthulhu_Dreams_ 7h ago

Lol, you think you'll be alive if your 10,000 PSI tank starts to leak?

At that pressure, the tank really only 2 states of existence: integral or catastrophic failure. There is no "leak" at 10,000psi.

1

u/ScorchedCSGO 5h ago

The compressed air tank in my garage leaks. I should get that fixed.

1

u/Alltime-Zenith_1 1h ago

Hydrogen tanks used in cars operate at similar pressures, except those are flammable gas stored at high pressure. You just want something to jeer about, regardless of whether it works or not.

1

u/Szerepjatekos 14h ago

Wait that stupid short wasn't AI?

1

u/holyoctopus 17h ago

Go check any car sub. These morons are talking about how awesome it is and how they can't wait to get one.

9

u/Alltime-Zenith_1 17h ago

All while you, the enlightened one is in a meme sub.

-2

u/TheyHavePinball 14h ago

He wasn't calling them morons for being in the car sub. So not sure what being a meme sub has to do with anything. It has to do with seeing this obviously one-off performative exaggerated b******* stunt of a single vehicle and thinking it means anything other than another b******* distraction and over promise

1

u/LuizFelipe1906 16h ago

But it IS awesome

1

u/ScorchedCSGO 14h ago

Burn through what resource? compressed air?

-1

u/eXcelleNt- 13h ago

The energy/power required to blast compressed air with enough velocity that it prevents an airborne 3,000 lb car from cratering into the ground?

-1

u/Bubbly_Information50 11h ago

It’s a 6-7 hour service to get the cold nitrogen tank refilled, you can’t do it yourself. (From the Hagerty coverage of the car)

2

u/Paintingnaked69 3h ago

Watch the event on YouTube. He says they refill themselves and compress air.

2

u/ScorchedCSGO 8h ago

Elon Musk stated that the Tesla Roadster's air tanks can automatically refill themselves by pulling in and compressing ambient air on board.

0

u/Bubbly_Information50 7h ago

Source? I saw a very different statement from Tesla.

-2

u/lankylonky 6h ago

Elon certainly would never lie! Especially to generate hype and inflate the value of one of his companies further, enriching himself

3

u/ScorchedCSGO 5h ago

Do you always hate new tech or is this just an anti-Musk thing?

1

u/lankylonky 4h ago

I neither hate tech or am inherently anti musk, but skepticism is warranted when he has dishonestly portrayed his products in the past (for example full self driving cars back in 2016, 10 years later, they still can’t be legally marketed as fully self driving). When the system is commercially available, then it’s worth getting excited over IF it has all alleged features

1

u/Player2Davith 21h ago

You’re entrusting society to actually do the heavy lifting?

1

u/PurpleCableNetworker 16h ago

They think it will be standardized - or they think they can sell stock options, get rich over night, and buy one.

I’d be willing to be no major insurance company will cover the cost of aerial maneuvers gone bad and that Tesla will be the last line insurer. Which is likely what Elon wants so his company can make even MORE money.

I swear he wants to be the car manufacture, dealership, “fuel” provider, and insurer all rolled into one.

Can we say monopoly?

0

u/GeckoV 16h ago

You are talking about some of the most gullible folks on the planet, though, namely people who don’t see through his obvious nonsense

0

u/Spector-JZ 19h ago

OP is the idoot for thinking people expect flying cars by 2028

-1

u/Alearic006 19h ago

You’re right, the prototype is the peak, it will never improve. This is the best it will ever be.

2

u/Atarge 17h ago

This particular way? Yeah probably. There is a clear physical limit how much you can compress air. To do this little 1-2 second stunt it needs dozens of gallons of liquid high pressure air, no way around that. And that's assuming the car in the demo was not just an empty shell

1

u/Laniakeea 17h ago

But it was, you can clearly see in the video underneath the car that its only a metallic grid to keep the parts together assembling a car.
