Admission Questions What Makes Dayton Worth the Extra $130K Compared to Miami Oxford?

Hey everyone! I’ve posted a few times asking about Miami Oxford vs. Dayton, as I’m currently considering transferring to UD.

Almost everyone I’ve talked to who attends Dayton absolutely loves it. The school has a 91% freshman retention rate, a strong sense of community, and an atmosphere that genuinely appeals to me.

However, there’s one thing I’m struggling to understand.

From what I’ve researched, Miami seems to have a stronger academic reputation in several fields I’m considering, yet Dayton costs significantly more.

According to the universities’ published 2026–27 costs (before financial aid):

Dayton: $69,700/year (tuition, housing, food)
Miami Oxford: $36,558/year (in-state tuition, housing, food)

That’s approximately $132,500 more over four years at sticker price.

Obviously, scholarships and financial aid can change those numbers dramatically, but I’m curious: What makes Dayton worth that difference?

Is it the alumni connections, professors, friendships, campus culture, or overall college experience?

I’m a philosophy major potentially interested in law school, so academics and the value of my degree matter to me. However, I also want to enjoy college and make lifelong friendships.

I’m genuinely interested in Dayton, not trying to criticize it. I’m just wondering what makes so many students choose it over a potentially more affordable university.

For those attending Dayton, what made you choose it, how much did financial aid reduce your costs, and do you feel it was worth the money?

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who considered Miami Oxford before choosing Dayton!

If you had a bad situation during Thursday’s false alarm, I works like to speak with you. I work with a local news station in Cincy and would like to share your (or a friends) story to raise awareness about how false alarms are no laughing matter. Message me Reddit if you are interested.

debating rushing a sorority

hello! i'm a freshman right now which means rushing in the spring here. i'm honestly really conflicted. i've never considered rushing, i've always had a great group of friends who knew me and just get me since i've known them a long time. college is different. nobody really just gets you this early meeting someone. i have friends don't get me wrong, just not a group of people that i specifically hangout with or get invited to everything yk. well, every friend ive made is rushing. i've never wanted to rush in the past because frankly i don't like being told what to do, i believed i could make friends on my own, i have no interest in frats (don't get me wrong i love going out, having a good time, being with friends, all the things any basic girl loves). my opinion has started to change on the friend thing. i don't really feel like i will have any friends if i dont rush- considering those girls are usually the type i hang around anyways. another thing i hate is being fake and male centered girls which i feel is a heavy part of greek life. i just want some more opinions out there and advice based on my situation. also, question- i don't know much about greek life but are all sorority's kind of revolving around frats, frat boys, and frat parties? if so... which ones don't? sorry this is really long, thanks! :)

Questions about Halloweekend @ Miami u

Me and two of my friends are planning on driving up to Miami U from UC for Halloween, only for one night. What are some things to do there and places to go? I know several places at UC require a student ID to get in, is that the same for Miami? Basically any recommendations/advice are welcome.

Is it even worth it?

Considering Transferring from Miami University to UD. Is the Environment Really That Different?

Hi everyone! I’m a 19-year-old philosophy major currently in my first semester at Miami University Hamilton, which is one of Miami’s regional campuses. My plan has been to transition to the main Oxford campus next semester, but recently I’ve been seriously considering the University of Dayton instead.

For some background, I graduated from Badin High School, a Catholic high school in Hamilton. I’m actually an agnostic atheist, so I’m not religious, but I genuinely loved my experience there. The people were great, the environment felt welcoming, and I really think the school helped shape who I am today.

I go up to Miami Oxford pretty frequently for debate club, bars, parties, and just to hang out. But for some reason, I’ve never really felt like I fit in there. I don’t know exactly how to describe it, but sometimes the atmosphere just feels almost evil, gross, or grimy to me. I’m also not a fan of Miami’s Greek life whatsoever, and I have absolutely no interest in participating in it. Between the heavy drinking culture, what I’ve seen and heard about cocaine and steroid usage, and the general party atmosphere, something about the environment just throws me off.

On the other hand, Miami Hamilton feels like the complete opposite. In my experience, a lot of students seem pretty reserved and uninterested in socializing. Sometimes it feels like people specifically chose the regional campus to avoid the bigger college environment. Obviously, that’s not everyone, but it’s been difficult to have the kind of social interactions I was hoping for. It’s almost like Hamilton is too quiet socially, while Oxford feels like too much.

A lot of my friends attend schools like UC, Thomas More, Mount St. Joe, Cedarville, and others. Interestingly, one of my friends who goes to Dayton seems to be one of the only people I know who genuinely loves his college experience. My grandparents also attended Dayton, and they’ve always spoken highly of it.

Academically, I’m majoring in philosophy, which brings up another concern. Since Dayton is a Catholic university, I wouldn’t want my philosophy education to be overly centered around religion or theology. I have absolutely no problem studying philosophy of religion, and I actually find it fascinating, but I want a well-rounded philosophy education that includes metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, philosophy of mind, and other areas. I’m also curious whether Dayton’s philosophy program is as academically strong as Miami’s, especially considering that philosophy is already a somewhat niche degree when it comes to career opportunities.

Also, please don’t factor tuition or cost into your recommendations. Fortunately, finances aren’t an issue for me, so I’m really just trying to compare the quality of education, campus atmosphere, and overall student experience.

I guess what I’m really asking is whether Dayton has a noticeably different social environment from Miami Oxford. Is it more welcoming? More laid-back? Easier to meet genuinely good people? Is there still a fun social scene without everything revolving around Greek life and partying?

And for anyone familiar with both universities, how would you compare their philosophy programs?

Part of me wonders whether Miami simply isn’t the right environment for me. Another part wonders whether I’m just struggling with the transition from high school to college and would feel similarly at Dayton. I don’t want to romanticize another university only to discover that it’s essentially the same experience somewhere else.

I’m genuinely torn because I’ve always planned on going to Oxford, but lately I’ve been questioning whether that’s actually where I want to spend the next few years.

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially from anyone who has attended or transferred between these schools. Thanks!

Best Friday class time?

Hi! I’m going to have exactly one Friday class next semester. In your experience, is it better to get it over with earlier, or save it until noon/later so I can go out Thursday and sleep in the next morning? It’d be Calc II if that matters

Addtl cost business classes?

I saw on the website there is an additional cost for business classes? What does this add up to for an undergraduate degree in the Farmer school of business? Out of state tuition- room - board is around $60k so just wondering how much more this will add per year seems like it could add up fast.

“Farmer School of Business: $142.76 per credit hour fee for most business school courses.”

General How is parking at Miami for staff?

I believe I will receive an offer soon to work there, although when I visited the campus. The parking seemed bad. I am hoping it was just a weird time becuase I would need a Red Pass, and those spots seemed full and taken.

Also is there parking at the gym? I love to workout and I would like to use the gym without searching all over for a spot

Is ETBD a useless major?

Suddenly became extremely paranoid about this. I’ve learned photoshop, video editing and now 3D modeling but im becoming increasingly paranoid that it won’t get me a job and I should’ve chosen something like Cybersecurity instead. Any success stories with ETBD?

Miami (OH) followup on my preseason preview, plus we launched a free weekly CFB pick'em

Hey guys! The season preview I posted here a few weeks back did pretty well, so circling back like I said I would.

I had you guys at 7-5, and said the trips to Pitt and Cincinnati were paycheck games you weren't supposed to win. Pitt went that way, 59-14, but you nearly stole the other one, losing 35-31 at Cincinnati. I expected McComb to be inconsistent early, and he's been better than that: 13 of 13 for 234 and 3 TDs against Holy Cross, and 334 yards at Cincinnati. The MAC schedule is where I had the seven wins coming from, and it starts with UConn on Saturday.

What are you guys seeing that the box scores aren't, and how do you see the season ending up?

Quick aside since it's in the title, we just launched a free weekly college football pick'em, $225 in prizes this week. Ten games, pick the winners, locks Saturday at noon ET, three and a half hours before you kick off against UConn. Nothing to buy.
