humankind hiccups 😅 My cycle has been off this past month, and apparently, according to Google Trends, so has everyone else’s!
I did some quick research, and there was an unprecedented spike in searches for irregular periods over the past two months. So, it seems to be a universal thing.

This is fuckin weird. The US has a much muted effect, but other countries globally (France, Worldwide, Japan, Colombia all below) show a WILD spike at the start of '26.
Edit: I think I figured this out.
Tldr: Since Gemini started cannibalizing Google searches the Trend search numbers have been underestimating people using Gemini/other AI for searching in place of Google search. Now those are being captured AND they're being done in English rather than local language bc that's how Gemini searches.
Google rolled out AI Search on the main Google page in early 2026. Before that time, people were using Gemini or other AI for health questions, or going to doctors. Now people go straight to the Google homepage, and those searches actually go straight into the Trend numbers where Gemini convos don't.
Also, if you look across countries, and other ailments ("back pain"), you see the same trend, BUT it's predicted by the level of English spoken in each country. In France/Colombia/Indonesia it's enormous, in the UK/Australia it barely exists, in the US it's moderate. I think this is a result of Gemini doing its background searches in English, even if it gives a result in the local language, so what used to be non-English searches for the same information have gone down alongside an increase in the English-language version of the ailment. THIS trend actually extends back a couple years in non-English countries when people were moving from Google search to Gemini, but once Gemini moves to the main search page, those inputs started being counted in Google Trends.
Edit: Thx for all the awards folks. 🥲 I will place them all in the hole in my heart left by my parents. Jk it's from eating batteries.

Interesting! I suspected this trend had more to do with how the average person is using google today vs years past. I compared several other health symptoms and a couple car issues and found similar 2026 spikes: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildyinteresting/s/Nxkxyn5wZp
That may still be a contributing factor, but your theory about Gemini affecting the data in the background, especially given the correlation to how prominent English is in a given country, seems to explain why the trend is so sudden.
10
u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee Aug 27 '26
I thought about that too. People being more willing to go to AI vs. waiting for a doctor or doing a bulk Google search would make a lot of sense.

14
u/gaggledimension Aug 27 '26
8
u/Direct-Nectarine9875 Aug 28 '26
People search in their native languages, but Gemini searches in English. That's why you see a spike where English is not the first language, because there's coming more input in English now than before.

I didn't understand the 'people' bit.
Does the sentence mean - "My partner is neutered (assuming snipped / tied / vasectomy)" OR "His people got him neutered (assuming some family member did it to him - which also kind of I don't understand 👀 )"?
21
u/YourPaleRabbit Aug 27 '26
Haha he was of his own volition; neither of us should breed and we know it. So he had a vasectomy done :) as a kid I used to ask for food by making the animal “I want cow please” etc, and that kind of thing still makes me giggle. But the prompts here for AI are no different than a tried and true Google search, are you saying people are using more AI which is telling them to Google their illments?
6
u/Optimal_Benis Aug 27 '26
Google gives an AI summary. The default google search. The default search on many browsers and phones. To get more in the weeds, this comment argues that the gemini (and possibly other AI) users are just transitioning to using the default google search engine, as they are realising that they don't need a separate app and can just google things like normal.
Regardless, it's not just irregular periods that are spiking in the searches.
5
u/DeinFoehn Aug 27 '26
I did what every sane man would do and asked my ai for research whats Happening here. Obviously people didn't just use more ai in those months, but the way AI does research may have changed. If you ask your ai a queation it does many similar Web searches. Like the three in OPs Screenshot and many more. So one question about a late period = 20+ websearches. I guess Google tries to filter those out but that didn't work right away, so ist peaked and got back to normal more or less.
Sounds plausible. Didn't check for halluzinations. Did say it's a theory, no proof at the moment.

u/Optimal_Benis Aug 27 '26

I think this data signals a dramatic shift in how people are using internet searches (maybe especially related to health concerns), rather than something specific to menstrual cycles.
Look at the same trend lines for "hair loss", "migraine", "back pain", "erectile dysfunction" - all spiking to various degrees in 2026
All the comments here about their own irregular periods are anecdotal and susceptible to self-selection bias.
Edit: "fever", "finger numbness", "foot pain" also spiking in 2026, but some other symptoms/health searches are not, e.g. "itch", "nose bleed". Who knows what's really going on but it's clearly a broader trend.
Edit 2: searches for "flat tire" and "check engine light" also showing similar 2026 spikes. I really think this a broader behavioral change in how and when we use search engines rather an increase in the actual symptoms/issues.
Edit 3: I think u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee may have found the actual cause. It's seemingly related to Google integrating Gemini into the main search: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildyinteresting/s/br61cpPSfD

Man I don’t know which is more horrifying…real sudden trends in physical ailments, or the internet causing psychosomatic symptoms to trend
18
u/A88Y Aug 27 '26
My thought is that it’s stress increasing physical symptoms or increasing awareness of symptoms. I’ve been very stressed this year for varying reasons and so I’ve been anxiety googling a lot. I believe stress can affect menstrual cycles to a degree as well.

I am so deep in this. Reading everyone’s comments; my mind is blown. I’d like to throw in there that there is a population of women who take birth control (myself included) so the period is essentially “predictable” which means any deviation from that would have to be related to something in that woman’s environment. I am curious for more information as to whether women are/are not on birth control.

I really do think the eclipse has had something to do with it, all of my girl friends have had weird cycles this month!

5 days early this month for me, normally 28 days in the dot for the last several years. I was just talking about this with my husband trying to move our vacation since my period schedule moved haha.

Given the chaos, hostility and murderous behavior in the world today, its no surprise that stress from it would manifest physiologically.

My entire life, my period has been heavy and lasted 7-9 days. Horrible cramps the first 3 days.
A few months ago, it started lasting only 3 days. All of which were much lighter flows. No cramps. I'm not sure if it's comforting or jarring finding out so many others are having irregular periods...

It’s something in the water. The bottled water, of course. Nobody really drinks tapwater anymore. And that’s also why girls start getting their period sooner and sooner in age.

You put the /s in a place that makes me wonder if the entire comment is sarcasm. Or if you meant the first part, then added a sarcastic note about a conspiracy theorist, since that's what many would think.
