You can not be telling me that 3rd gens are considered old already. I just got it... 6 years ago...

They are not. OP is humble bragging

69

u/PurbulentTriest 15h ago

Bragging how? They aren't getting a new GPU

156

u/PPSSPPMasterBlaster 11h ago

Having a 3080ti and crying about it is humblebraging because you want someone to pitty you for having a better GPU than 97% of the population.

It's like crying your 2022 Mercedes needs new tires while people drive around in 1995 Volkswagens.

u/Destrobo_YT 10h ago

Oh, I didn't read the title and thought he was taking about Titan bruh. I'm here with my 2060 Super who is choking hard these days

6

u/PPSSPPMasterBlaster 10h ago

The 2060 super is fine just use Lossless Scaling. I got a 1070 and I am more than fine with it + LS.

I just started using one.🥀

(Semi-retro rig, but still)

That card may be the best buy in history. I upgraded a whole ago but only because of VRAM, it still ran great if it could fit everything in memory.

3

u/UnexpectedFeatures 9h ago

The 10 series is near immortal. My 10 year old ex-miner 1080 is still my gaming card. I don't play anything crazy, but it still does well on new games with high settings. I don't think they make them like that anymore.

2080 ti kingpin still going strong.

211

u/TmotherfuckingT Intel i5 9600k 3.7GHz, GTX 1080, 16GB RAM 18h ago

1080 here still truckin along!

73

u/Low_Consideration179 18h ago

I traded my 1080TI to a collector for this 2080ti Kingpin. Absolute goat of an individual.

And the 1080TI was "Mining scrap" to begin with and free. It was in reality barely used at all.

12

u/12D1 16h ago

Idk if you've seen but KingPin, himself, started a YT Channel, and as his first(?) Video, he did an Unboxing from wait for it.. ASUS!, He received intel board and ryzen board with binned chips and a 5090 Astral. He even suggested that there might be a Asus Kingpin collab IF Asus is up for it.

4

u/DidjTerminator 15h ago

Hell yeah!

Wonder if there will be kingpin AMD gpu's if he joins ASUS instead of PNY.

From memory he was going to be a part of PNY, but there just wasn't any update on that at all.

ASUS has been on a roll lately ngl, especially with all the linux support they have too.

4

u/12D1 14h ago

Im also hoping for a Kingpin AMD GPU, especially with the Launch of the UDNA Architecture would be a massive W. But Realistically, BEcause Nvidia dominates the market, it's more sensible to go with Nvvidia GPU's over AMD's. Personally, I would love to see EVGA Get back into the GpU game and launch EVGA gpu's with the AMD UDNA Launch. That would be totally EPIC.

1050ti here at the brink of death, giving me graphical artifacts from time to time.

10

u/Ahuru_Duncan 17h ago

I played Monster Hunter Wilds first beta with my 1070ti. That poor gpu was struggling so bad. With min settings i got like 15fps. Decided to check how well it runs with max settings. If it werent bolted and strapped to the table, it would have flown away.

Now my old rig is chilling in a royal shelf, unless my new rig breaks and i need to take it out from its retirement home.

9

u/newredditwhoisthis Ascending Peasant 17h ago

I revived my 1060. Now it only works if the cabinet is laid down on floor and my pc can't function if I make it stand in correct position.

2080ti kingpin day 1 reporting in!!!!

Do you still run the evga GPU loader software and run any overclocks?

Curious if others still do, mine has seen gaming/work/school on it everyday since I’ve had mine and it’s still going strong.

6

u/Low_Consideration179 18h ago

I played with OC for a while and was able to push it hard.

However with GPU prices being what they are now I turned it back to default clocks and run it there to try and preserve the lifespan. Plus tbh I don't really feel the need to OC it to enjoy the games I play. Even star citizen runs well on its default clocks.

Could have needed one, working with substance designer & painter, blender, unreal engine, while running the game in tests on the side. My 2080's drivers were always crashing, due to VRAM being way too less. But yeah... Was not seeing it paying 2k+ for the 5090 back then, just to have an AI bloated less performant card in its current generation, neither 5k+ now.

13

u/Hindead 18h ago

I know I have to do it as well, but my rig has a custom water loop and I just didn’t want to disassemble it all. I never thought it would last this long to be worried about this!

9

u/Alzusand 18h ago

A custom water loop.

Im sorry if its rude asking but where I live for the price of the custom water loop at the time I couldve gotten a 1080ti instead.

and the best processor for the time was like the 6700k wich doesent heat up that much you had probably the chillest PC ever.

8

u/elk33dp 15h ago

Custom loops are for the love of the game, not efficiency.

I slowly worked my way up through water cooling when younger and ended up with a full hardline loop. It was glorious.

Nowadays my shits all air cooled because taking the entire thing apart to swap an NVME or upgrade GPU (not that I've been doing that much with prices) is way too much work. I did it once, dont regret it, but god never again.

On the one hand this sub acts like hardware should continue to improve as rapidly as it did in the early 2000s, on the other people get upset when a 6 year old GPU is treated as old.

That's part of the reason why GPU prices have been trending up so hard: Because the improvements in raw silicon and therefore the performance gains in GPUs have slowed down so much, it has become much more sensible for people to buy high-end GPUs.

An $800+ GPU used to become outdated in 3 years just like any other, so it made more sense to buy lower to mid tier GPUs and replace them somewhat frequently. But in a world where generations release slowly and offer more limited performance gains, GPUs are expected to have 6-10 year life spans, so buying a cheap one can mean to be stuck with low performance for a decade.

So the market has shifted towards the higher end in response. The 80 and 90 tier cards have sold crazy numbers for their price points because of that.

5

u/PhoenixPills Desktop 12h ago

I just started my new build and spent an absurd amount of money on everything. Intend for it to last another 14 years.

OLD PC that I'm still using until Monday has an i7-2600k and a 1060. Built in 2012, card upgraded for free in like... 2018??

I'm now going to a 9700 XT and I'm going to shit my fucking pants.

I saved a lot over the years not really building new PCs or upgrading and here we are.

3

u/Emphursis 9h ago

You’re spot on. I got a 970 in 2014, replaced in 2021. By 2019 it felt old. But the replacement 6900XT isn’t feeling outdated yet, nor is it struggling with new games.

You are gonna feel a hell of a difference when and if you upgrade. Those Intel chips got throttled by security patches so those CPUs literally aren't as fast as they used to be. I jumped from 4th gen to 14th gen and the difference was absolutely staggering. The tech has changed a lot in those 10 years!

My RTX 2080 currently lives in my Home Server after I upgraded my workstation to a 4080 founders 3 years ago.

I recently saw a friend of mine with his Laptops external GPU rig and instantly thought of this

His Laptop is Like 7y old and looks like straight from Warhammer 40k with random wires going in and out of the laptop, keeping it alive somehow

And right next to it is his 5080 plugged into the rig, which gets cooled by a Desk Mini Air conditioner and a broken fan without a cage

Reason behind this is that he bought the 5080 dirt cheap off eBay, but he is too greedy to buy the rest of the PC rn

My 3080ti is actually driving my 5k2k monitor at acceptable graphics/performance thanks to DLSS. Preset K and performance mode (1080p internal) works and performs pretty well in most games. In some games, I use Preset E in balanced mode instead.

I love my 3090, I gave my 2080 to my now dead friend/cousin. Thankfully his best friend is still using it.

RTX 4090. Already outdated by my 5090. Time to put it into living room PC for retirement.

48

u/VizDevBoston 18h ago

hey it's me your living room pc

5

u/Dapper-Ad-4300 17h ago

Open up that port then, i’m sticking it in

8

u/Bupod 18h ago

You want the 4090 to be put in you? I mean, if you insist, I won’t yuck another man’s yum…

4

u/VizDevBoston 18h ago

Way I see it, is I can either have one 4090 in my butt, or to make the same money 100 dicks in my butt for 20 bucks each.

Come to think of it I could also just do 20 dicks in my butt for 100 bucks each. Anyways point is I have options, I just have to start charging.

Damn, people are retiring 3080ti. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to upgrade my 2080

my 1060 3gb oc I got for free staring at me inside the free PC which I got everything in for free (a surprisingly balanced PC to be fair, 8gb DDR3, i5-4570, and an old fast HDD

2

u/moohooman 17h ago

My 1060 is on my display shelf as the best purchase I ever made.

My 2080S is in my spare parts computer that is occasionally pulled out for friends and family to borrow.

My 3080ti is currently in my main computer frozen in time with my 9900K and 64GB of DDR4 waiting for either catastrophic failure or prices to come down.

u/BrandHeck 7800X3D+4070S+32DDR5 & 5800X+9060XT16+32DDR4 17h ago

I have a 970 around here as a backup. Still works great. Sold it to a friend years ago, then while cleaning house he came across it again. Said it wasn't worth much so he asked if I wanted it, I said "Of fucking course I want it! That thing can still rip!"

2

u/marblesbykeys 16h ago

My 2070 super is still chugging along like a champ haha.

2

u/Cervani 16h ago

I'll be using my EVGA 3090 until it explodes. Especially since EVGA doesn't make cards anymore. Thing is practically a collectors piece at this point.

2

u/Senzafane 16h ago

I've just repasted my 3080ti to keep it fresh.

Used to have a 1080 that I gave to my friend on the condition I get the corpse when it dies, that thing is still going strong so I might be waiting a while.

2

u/Caladaster 15h ago

3080 running strong. Zero desire to get the current gen slop. Going to go AMD once this one dies.

2

u/Leshie_Leshie where is my PC 15h ago

I Reincarnated as an RTX3080ti like I was before but in a New Rig!

2

u/Lunesola 14h ago

i got a 3090 and it works fine with AAA games, but its noisy

2

u/MahaHaro 14h ago

Sometimes I think about getting with the times and buying a 50 series card. I am not prepared to spend nearly $1500AU to buy a 5070, $2500AU for a 5080, or a whole $10,500AU for a 5090 though.

2

u/eggnorman Linux 13h ago

Hey, I just ordered a Titan Xp for cheap. Pascal is gonna be with us for a loonnng time.

2

u/duppyconqueror81 11h ago

I bought one last year as an upgrade to a 1650S. Don’t waste your money on 1500$ cards

  1. Got put in its 3rd computer a couple years ago and still kicking.
