Question Cleaning help

Post image
• Upvotes

So I haven’t played in a few months and my wife cleaned the house. Idiotically I left my alto on a stand and not back in the case and she decided to help clean it with baking powered without telling me. She forgot she did that and now it’s caked in a layer of baking powder and dust 😭. Any ideas on what I should do to get it off? It’s hard enough that I’m struggling to get it off with a micro fiber towel!

Upgrading my Saxophone

• Upvotes

I have been playing my tenor saxophone for some time now, practicing a lot on a daily basis and now i'm considering upgrading from my Yamaha yts280 to the yts62. What differences can I expect? MP and reeds will stay the same. (Otto Link Tone Edge 6*, Vandoren ZZ 2.0)

Question What is the best way to adjust the jazz labs holder Pro XL?

Hi all. I have a sax holder XL but I am having a hard time adjusting it properly. Do the scallop wavy ends go over the shoulder so that they show from the front? If that is the case do I bend the stiff section so that the unit is up against my chest? Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Discussion Branford Marsalis & Diane Reeves

I just saw their tour stop with Branford's quartet in Chicago and have to say... It is a must-see for all saxophonists! They're playing John Coltrane rep.

Do you know what happens when you combine fantastic original compositions with a seasoned vocalist and incredibly versatile saxophonist? It's gold. If you can make it happen, do it.

For those who can't make it, I'll attempt to describe what makes it so unique: Diane Reeves hasn't lost her touch one bit. She comes across as so comfortable on stage it seems almost casual. She's got an immense range on her instrument, and can make it solo like a trombone, or manipulate her thoughts into lyrics that she form-fits into the notes spontaneously. It's much more poetic and entertaining than I have the ability to express.

But then you take all this and add Branford's punctuation and you really get to experience the magic. He listens carefully so as never to step on her singing, instead finding little moments to fill, or harmonizes with her perfectly. And then he can't help but to insert his offbeat humor into his playing His combo can tell where he's going and eggs him on by comping the rhythm. This is all in the music. I didn't think they go into these shows with more than a set list. They just have their way of communicating with barely detectable movements and their shared musical experience.

I've seen Branford play several times, mostly at Symphony Center, and it's always entertaining. But this show is so next level. I was physically and especially mentally exhausted this evening, and warned my friend I might fall asleep. He joked with me afterwards, saying he looked over and I had only shut my eyes when I was feeling it. I told him there was no way I could sleep with the energy being what it was. And the show was so intimate, with Diane engaging the audience so well. I'm on a high I haven't experienced in a while, and hope you can share it in. That's all.

Please excuse the terrible photos. I didn't have great seats (though free, as they were comps) and you're not allowed to take pics during the music.

about to practice all state audition music before i realized that nether my low bb or b natural keys will seal. more specifically, they seal in the front but not the back. the c# key is also a little wonky but that’s besides the point. it’s a yamaha tenor, but im not too sure of the specific model. also all of this is happening and all state and chair placement are next week 😭

Question getting F on the tuner using mouthpiece and neck

everything i'm reading says that I should be getting an a flat when i'm practicing with just the mouthpiece and neck. i'm trying to improve my embrouchure as i'm getting ulcers when paying for even 20 minutes.

what am I doing wrong? everything I read says a faulty neck or my mouth shape. But i can't find anything that tells me how to change the shape. the neck is more or less new.

when the saxophone is connected then the notes coming out are tuning ok, so im not sure what's happening

Question Teaching upper register

I have a student who isn’t connecting with any of my normal advice and teaching techniques on playing palm D-F.

We’ve tried a ton of different things and he seems to always have a very harsh and unresponsive tone, his middle and low register are fine.

I’ve played on his set up (disinfected his reed and mouthpiece before and after obviously) and everything works fine. Any tips? Exercises?

Question Recognise this mouthpiece?

Got this one at an auction and can’t find what brand and type it is. Can you?

It is a mouthpiece for alto saxophone and play’s nice with a dark tone. It has, besides the number on the metal band and the grooves on both sides, no markings.

The only brand I found that uses the metal band is Selmer on a 1920’s ‘air flow’…

Tnx in advance :)

Question Advice for returning player

Hi everyone.

I have returned to playing bari sax after about 20 years. I played all through high school and a little bit after and thoroughly enjoyed it but didn't keep up on it. I continued with other musical endeavors such as piano and guitar, so I never stopped playing music.

About a year ago I joined a local wind ensemble. I've been playing with them ever since and I've been absolutely loving it. I plan to stay with this group and also possibly join others. This brings me to my question:

I am playing on an old (1960's-ish) American Standard baritone sax that is on extended loan to me from my cousin. It has some miles on it, to put it gently! I recently had it completely tuned up and repaired. It plays a bit better than it did before, but it still isn't great. I think it's time to buy my own bari sax.

I've been looking at several lately. A music shop near me has a used Selmer SBS311 for approximately $4500. It seems to be in like new condition. I'm going tomorrow to check it out and try it out. My question is this: is this a good instrument for my cause? I plan to casually play with local groups, and do some concerts with them. Not too much else.

As I get better and better on the American Standard that I currently have, it's limitations are becoming more and more clear. As I play more and more advanced music I am wishing I had a better instrument.

If anyone is familiar with this Selmer SBS311, some advice would be greatly appreciated!

Obviously, it’s a Selmer Soloist D tenor mouthpiece. It came with a bunch of other stuff in a box from an estate auction. I have no idea what this metal addition is on the top! Maybe an experimental resonator or something? Anyone know? Does it still have any value? Thanks in advance!

Discussion My baby finally came back from total revision...

Aaand it's screwed. New pads, everythings lovely...then 10 minutes in a pearl detaches. Upon further inspection, there's some noticeable spots of dirt and minerals on keys, when I was told it would be taken apart and cleaned properly. I paid 1.1k for the revision (which is normal where I'm from).

Thoughts? What should I do?

Question Need help with a chirping problem

I’m primarily a bari player, but I recently got a nice cannonball avr to play lead alto in my high school jazz band. The sound is great but I’m having an issue with it chirping when I go to notes like middle D and E. I’ve taken it to the shop, bought a new mouthpiece (JodyJazz 6M) and I’ve used numerous different reeds. So far the most successful I’ve been has been with a Vandoren green Java 2.5 strength but it still chirps when tounging the aforementioned notes too much. If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this, any help would be very much appreciated.

Discussion Decorating bari sax

Hello fellow saxists,

I have a parade coming up this saturday for my marching band and it’s a community halloween parade. My band director is allowing us to decorate our instruments, (well actually it’s mandatory to), and I’m not sure how to decorate my bari!

Any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Also probably would want something not too expensive lol.

Media High School All State Audition

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My son has played in the local city Honors Band 6th-9th grade, and now auditioning for All State. Practicing, he sounded (to me) amazing but said he goofed up several times here in the audition due to nervousness with the process. He didn't record the scales portion of the audition.

The all state band is about 140 students, so maybe 14 saxophones if a 10% density is assumed. I'm wondering his chances of making the cut. For those with an ear for music (not me), how would you rate his performance? Appreciate any polite critical or constructive criticism.
