Question — General Middle name missing on my flight ticket but is available on Passport

Hi everyone, I've booked a round-trip flight from Mumbai to Phuket - Mumbai Phuket with Thai VietJet and Phuket Mumbai with Air India.

On the passport i have the Given Name - AJIT RAHUL, Last Name - SHARMA, but I have booked a ticket with only (middle name RAHUL is missing).

I contacted Goibibo, and they said Air India is asking for around 5,300 just to add the middle name (I booked return ticket - Air India flight for approx 16K), No idea on Vietjet what would say, as i contacted them via mail and they replied saying contact Goibibo only.

Will this cause any issue at check-in/boarding or immigration? Should I pay to get it corrected, or is the missing middle name generally okay?

I'm travelling solo for the first time outside India, so I'm a bit worried. Any advice from people who've faced this would be really helpful. Thanks!

Question — General Northeast Washington or "Central" Maine? Based on scenery alone.

Based purely on scenery/outdoor views and outdoor activities, do you prefer Northestern Washington or "Central" Maine (not sure what to call it exactly)? And why?

In Washington we would be near Lake Pend Oreile, Kettle Falls, and Colville National Forest. Our major cities would be Spokane and Coeur d'Alene Idaho. Glacier National Park would be within 4 to 5 hours, Leavenworth Washington within 4 hours, Yellowstone within 7 to 8 hours and Canada within an hour.

In Maine we would be near Somerset and Penobscot Counties, within 2 hours of Moosehead Lake, Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Our major cities would be Bangor and Augusta. We would be also be within 2 to 4 hours of New Hampshire, Vermont and Canada.

Question — General Do I need cash in London?

I'm going to London soon and am more comfortable paying with card. Where I'm from it is getting quite normal and I find it easier than procuring pounds. Is there anything I might need cash for? Idk, smaller stores, markets etc. Is paying for a cup of coffee with card frowned upon? We are going as a group, so we might even take turns paying for the whole group, so maybe there won't be any small amounts.

Question — General Travelling with a pill organizer to Hong Kong

I take some natural health supplements in the morning (saffron, l-theanine, and rhodiola) and before bed (magnesium and glycine) and the bottles they come in are a bit much so i threw the pills loose in a pill organizer for the week. I am flying to Hong Kong for the first time. If the pill organizer is in my checked bag and I wrote what each compartment contains on it as well have a picture of each bottle will I still run into any issues?

Question — Transport Renting an AWD SUV at SFO for a winter road trip to Oregon

Hi everyone,

I’m French and planning a trip this December. I’ll be spending a few days visiting SF, and then I want to rent a car to drive up through Northern California all the way to Portland.

Since I’ve never driven in Oregon or rented a car in the US before, I’d really prefer an AWD SUV for peace of mind, given the potential winter weather and snow.

The issue: when looking at rental websites, there’s no specific "AWD" filter. I can only select things like "Toyota RAV4 or similar" or "Mazda CX50 or similar," which feels like a coin toss regarding the drivetrain.

For those who frequently rent from SFO: are most SUVs there generally equipped with AWD? Are there any specific tips, rental companies, or workarounds to guarantee (or highly increase the chances of getting) an AWD vehicle?

Thanks so much in advance for your help! :)

Question — General I'm planning a trip to either New Caledonia or New Zealand for around 18 days in February, and I'm trying to figure out which one would be more expensive overall. My budget is a maximum of €6,500 for two people ?

I'm planning a trip to either New Caledonia or New Zealand for around 18 days in February, and I'm trying to figure out which one would be more expensive overall. My budget is a maximum of €6,500 for two people, including flights from Europe.

We'd be travelling on a budget: renting a car where it makes sense, staying in cheap accommodation, shopping at supermarkets and cooking most of our meals rather than eating out. No resorts or luxury travel.

For anyone who's visited either or both destinations, which would be more expensive for this kind of trip? Is €6,500 realistic for two people for 18 days, including flights, accommodation, car rental, fuel and food? I'd also love to know which destination offers the best value for money in terms of nature, biodiversity and unique experiences.

I know they're very different places, but if you had to choose one for February, which would you recommend and why?

Thanks

Question — General Prague for a week in late December- considerations?

Hello! My fiance and I are planning a trip to Prague the last week of December this year (from around the 23rd to 30th). We’re also hoping to go into Berlin by train and stay for one or two nights. We both love medieval history and museums, so we can’t wait to immerse ourselves in the history of Prague/Czechia :) I also grew up really involved in the classical music scene and am excited to see the home country of Smetana and Dvorak ❤️

However, neither of us have too much familiarity with Czech culture, and while we plan to read up, I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me what we should expect. We live in Boston, so I think we’ll be prepared for the cold weather, but is there anything we should know in terms of culture before traveling? I know Prague is a massive tourist destination and so many people will speak English- unfortunately, neither of us speak Czech, though I do speak some Russian and German and my fiance is fluent in Dutch. Should I try to learn some Czech for our travels?

Thank you so much for any advice in advance!

Question — General Solo travel as a married woman with kids

I'm in my mid 40's with a husband and 2 teens at home. We travel several times a year as a family, but I am itching to sprinkle in some short solo trips here and there as well. I used to travel a lot for work so I'm not new to traveling solo, but I do feel a bit strange booking a leisurely trip for just myself. Curious to hear from others out there who travel without their spouse/kids. I no longer work so I have a lot of time on my hands and a huge yearning to explore the world. Family is 100% supportive but there's still something holding me back.

My Advice MeetUp.com abroad is better than in the USA

I went on a whirlwind Asian trip earlier this month to Seoul, Osaka, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.

I've been tired of hanging out with other tourists/foreigners at hostels, clubs, and tours. So I tried something different. In each city I RSVPed and attended at least two MeetUp.com events in each city.

I had a blast..it's perhaps the best way to truly engage and interact with locals on a limited timeframe. Many wanted to improve their English with an American or discuss international affairs. After the formal event, most had a "second meeting" at a local bar or restaurant where the conversation continued.

I even ended up hanging out with folks in later days or they wanted to show me around town.

I've kept in contact with many folks, so if I return again, I've got instant friends.

My Advice Never forget your camera

• Upvotes

I went to Europe and was given the best advice before I left: whatever you do, make sure to bring a nice camera. I did, and I have so many amazing picture. I am so happy I listened to the advice, and I definitely want to remind everyone because sure, phone cameras work, but they can’t do everything!!

Discussion Any tips or thoughts on this?

I am 18 (F) just graduated high school, living in australia.
Ive always wanted to travel never been over overseas only interstate.
I am thinking of doing volunteer work in South Africa cape town next year with an agency, my older sister did this and said it was a great experience, not confirmed but just an idea.
Ive always thought of myself to be fearless when it comes to travelling the world, but im quite nervous. I understand that is a completely normal feeling. I just see a lot of stuff on social media, (gun violence, scams, sketchy people, murder) And it makes me scared and even hesitant to travel. Like even to western countries. I really want to do South Africa as a solo travel because I believe it would get me out of my shell and just be super beneficial to have my own experience rather than go with family or a friend. Are there any places of reccomendations, any advice, tips or own experiences? Welcome to share

Question — General Strange Cathay Pacific Check in Experience

I flew from HK to SF last night. When I went to the check in counter in HK for Cathay Pacific, there was a guy who looked like custom wandering around the check in lime entrance. He wore a smartglasses and holding a paper notepad. When I tried to enter the line, he stood in my way, tap his glasses and most likely took my picture without my consent. He then asked me a few security questions regarding whether someone approached me and hand me things during my stay, or did I went to some countiries before I went to HK, etc.

He didn’t identify himself, or say why he took my picture without consent.

When i was at the boarding gate, they blocked the whole gate area specific to my flight and needed to do an extra security custom check before boarding.

Does anyone know what’s going on?

Question — General Japan - Dec 24 to 4th Jan

We are planning for Japan in December. We want to see Japan in all seasons and we are starting with Winters/New Year.

Tickets are still in our budget.
As per my research on Reddit/Google, tickets to travel via trains within the country books fast..if anyone has travelled to Japan during this time -

are we late to book tickets considering new year/Christmas ?

Should I drop Japan and look for something else ?

Sorry if the question is redundant.. just hoping not to make any mistakes while travelling.

Discussion Portugal - Mixed feelings

Hey, I don't know if this is the right sub to post this but anyway. I'm leaving soon for Portugal and given the tensions and protests, I can't help but feel a little bit bad for going. I know I'm not the government, but I still am a visual and physical representation of a much larger problem. Now this is my third time going, I'm not some entitled asshole, I speak Portuguese and massively respect the culture but still...I'm not sure what to expect, especially in Porto. I work hard all year to go on vacation and I'm a little scared to feel unwelcomed. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Question — Itinerary Looking for a solo trip itinerary Northern Lights

Hey everyone, I'm considering a solo trip from 12/26 or 12/27 - 1/3.

I'll be traveling from NYC, with a budget of around 2-4k. Flexible on this because it is the holiday season.

I haven't been to Europe at all but have been wanting to visit the nice naturey parts of Europe with the chance to see some northern lights!
Something like Reykjavik or the Nordic countries.

I'd also like to meet solo travelers and be in a safe travelling area!

has anyone had experiences during this time of year?
Trying to figure things out and would love some ideas!
Was thinking about going to Sweden where I would go up to Abisko for the first 2-3 days and head back down to Stockholm for the remainder.

Was also told Tromso was a good place to go!

Would love any ideas!

Question — Itinerary Anniversary Trip in January (US)

My partner and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary towards the end of January and I am having difficulty choosing where to go. I love to travel but my partner does not. He has stipulated that he wants to go somewhere that is warm, but he also prefers a shorter flight. Neither of us are that interested in going to FL, but we would possibly be open to it if nothing else works within his limitations. We would be flying from Tulsa or Northwest, AR. I am the only one with a current passport and I do not see him renewing his by January. I have considered Palm Springs, CA as I’ve been there in Jan and it was comfortably warm but I’m not sure what there is to do since I went there for a conference. I like the idea of New Orleans, but I’ve been to NOLA in early January and it was not all that warm. Any ideas?

Question — Itinerary Heading to Mexico City with the family this week for a wedding.

Already booked a private tour of Teotihuacán. Staying at the JW Marriott.

Currently going through a Consciousness thing with my wife, curious if there's anything else down there that would be recommended for that kind of path? Similar to the kind of things you look to do in Sedona?

Also, is this the kind of place where it's recommended to stay on property as much as possible? Any safety concerns I need to be aware of?

Complaint What's the most over-priced food you've had while travelling?

I'm in Mallorca and it's thundering, so my partner and I had dinner in our hotel restaurant so we didn't have to travel anywhere for food this evening.

I ordered "veggie wok" from the menu and it was literally just a small helping of noodles with courgettes, red peppers and soy sauce - that's it. And to top it off the hotel charged me €13.50 for it! I could have made that myself and added protein like tofu to it for less than half of what this cost, and I'm feeling really short-changed.

What's the most over-priced meal you've ever had while travelling?

I was looking for flights to Bangkok and found a very cheap one that includes a layover in Milan, followed by a connection via this airline with a stop in Ashgabat.

Has anyone flown with this airline before? Also, which website can be used to actually book the tickets?

Question — General Help find proposal lo in feb vs st lucia

My boyfriend and I are going on vacation in Feb (1st week). I have a very strong feeling he plans on proposing on this vacation. It will also be during our Anniversary. Ive always imagined getting my rock in front of that giant rock in St Lucia. But the whole trip is looking more expensive than we originally thought.

He asked me to give other destination options. But Im not finding any beautiful destinations that match the idea in my head with a unique backdrop.

Does anyone have any other location suggestions that are out of the box and memorable to get proposed in front of? I’ll leave my boyfriend the easter egg

Question — General Traveling internationally with large medical device batteries (US to NZ, possibly Australia).

My question is whether to contact any of the airlines or airport security agencies in advance.

My husband uses a tumor treating device, which has a battery that’s about the size of a water bottle and is labeled 91-95 WH, so it meets TSA requirements. We travel with 4 such batteries. To complicate matters, the custom suitcase they provided us for the batteries, charger, and (sizeable) AC adapter is 22 inches in the long dimension, so it just meets most airlines size limits but not Air New Zealand, which specifies 21 inches. We can manage taking the batteries out of the suitcase for stowing under the seats in front, once we’re on the plane. Obviously it would be bad to have the devices or batteries confiscated at any airport or refused as carry-on by the airline. Being forced to put them with checked baggage is a risk but probably not a disaster.

Would it help to contact the various airlines to confirm we could do this? We know about special contacts with TSA in the US for medical devices, but what about security at foreign airports?

Travel details: We’re looking at airports BOS, SFO and/or LAX, Christchurch, Queenstown, possibly Sydney or Auckland. For airlines, possibilities include Delta, United, Qantas, and Air New Zealand. We really prefer direct flights, even if it means paying for a hotel layover, and we’ll generally fly business class. Air New Zealand is the kicker issue, because of their lower carryon limit. We could avoid ANZ by routing through Sydney instead of Auckland, or maybe taking train or bus from Queenstown to Christchurch and getting a direct flight. That would be bit of a risk flying in and out of Christchurch because the only choice besides ANZ be United, and they don’t fly direct to the US from Christchurch every day. (And in case anyone is wondering, we have annual insurance from Allianz.)
