Image / Video Two minute apart from each other

Post image

This is just wild. PlayStation wanted to end their partnership with Hideo Kojima. So Xbox was like: "Your loss."

This year is really starting to feel like an inverse of 2014 when Xbox ruined their public image with some insane Always Online DRM requirements and PlayStation capitalized on that.

Sony is speed running losing all the good will they built during the PS4 era.

It’s such a shame

They clearly think they're too big to fail, and it's up to consumers to show them otherwise.

u/Andromeda-OC Sep 10 '26

Granted, Microsoft and Xbox are almost equally shit at the moment. It’s a real would you rather get slapped in the face or kicked in the nuts type situation. PC is definitely the favored platform but building one has unfortunately ballooned a lot in price.

40

u/OokamiTheRonin Sep 10 '26

"Ballooned a lot in price" is the understatement of the decade. lol

15

u/Chaotic_Genobreaker Sep 10 '26

More like uhhhh blimped a lot in price.

2

u/SplendidEmber Sep 10 '26

Zeppelin-ed, if you will

2

u/Antricluc Sep 10 '26

I like it. Ballooned then blew and burned

5

u/Hayyner Sep 10 '26

Some components are literally 3x as expensive as they were just a year ago, it is absolutely insane. I'm glad I got my build when I did 😪

38

u/Maximum-Objective-39 Sep 10 '26

The good thing about PC is that there's a huge performance range available in the form of both past and present games so that there's potentially something at most price ranges that can tide you through these tough times.

u/Trashypass Sep 10 '26

Also it can make someone look at what they really want to play. I couldn't really care about the next open world AAA game. They don't move me. But some weird pixel art or B rate boomer shooter. Ya il play it. And that means I don't really need top specs. Mid lvl parts will get be a good 8 years.

8

u/BioExtract Sep 10 '26

Yup my gtx 1070 loves old games

3

u/Redd_is_compromised Sep 10 '26

Just please don't review bomb companies if a title doesn't run well on your card.

1

u/snrub742 Sep 10 '26

My 1080ti is still going okay.

It's my i7-5700 that actually is the bottle kneck at the moment

1

u/GamingBren Sep 11 '26

My GTX 1080 loves some modern games too

1

u/BioExtract Sep 11 '26

That’s reassuring. I played Postal 4 and it was near impossible. But might be cpu bottlenecking me but rendering was intense in that game

4

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

That's what I did. Original plan was to have a PC that could play my favorite old games. I did make a few upgrades since then so I get decent performance on newer games, but it's definitely not a high-end setup. Mostly I'm playing games that are 10-15 years old.

1

u/Schwiliinker Sep 10 '26

What about great AAA linear games? And if there’s really good AA games that require decent specs?

1

u/Trashypass Sep 10 '26

Most AAA need high specs. Cuz they don't optimize for shit. Borderlands 4 is a great example of this. Think push top hardware to there limits. Yet it not used basic graphics as it normal look. They ai isn't much smart then there 360 version from back then. And map are only a little bigger in comparison. It's just poorly put together.

Now you may run into a game in the AA space they need high specs. You could push your part useing overclock. Just another program. Or wait till it optimize a little better. Which can happen.

Worst case. Your just boned. Till you get better partd or a new PC. When I played on my PC 10-15 I only ran into 6 games that just wouldn't run. Of which 4 where console games they had PC version.

2

u/Schwiliinker Sep 10 '26

Don’t know too much about PC specs but what I learned is that usually you want to either have a console or have a laptop/PC that actually has similar specs to a console. Although I much prefer console personally after having a gaming laptop for a few years alongside my PS5 (with PS5 like specs)

1

u/Trashypass Sep 11 '26

Yes console specs are basically mid tier as there a delay between when it was designed. And when the parts are made. Normally by like 3 years.

Of course this was before PC parts becoming a issue to get. Cuz of AI. Which is why console parts are going nuts. But there nothing we can do about that.

So yes you aim to build or get a per built as console specs. Anyone will have a pretty good time for a majority of games.

u/krimsonPhoenyx Sep 10 '26

I know I’m a smidge late to the party to bring this doomer take but do we think these times are just tough and not a new normal that is pushed? My PC will be a bit overdue for an upgrade by next year I think, and I’m having a hard time finding the will to upgrade it. The thought of paying triple the price for some products that skyrocketed in price just a year or so earlier just makes me so reluctant, that once my computer stops being able to play new games, I’m genuinely considering just not playing new games on my PC until something changes.

3

u/FullMetalCOS Sep 10 '26

We really need to just wait and see if the AI bubble bursts and what happens/what comes next if it does. GPU’s never settled in price after the insanity of the coin mining era because we rolled straight into the RAM insanity of the AI era, but if that bubble bursts the hope would be that both RAM and therefore GPU’s find their level at their actual value.

1

u/Maximum-Objective-39 Sep 10 '26 edited Sep 10 '26

The people who are financing the current price spikes are in the process of vacuuming up so much of America's venture capital and business loans that other businesses are being forced to look for loans on the international market.

Meawhile there revenue from AI is relatively paltry and highly subsidized. This is simply not sustainable and when the bubble pops major investors are likely to be very skittish about funding new build out that doesn't have an iron clad reason to exist.

In the unlikely case that it is the new nomral than more capacity will be built and prices will normalize.

1

u/FullMetalCOS Sep 10 '26

Also, whilst the parts are expensive, you can get such crazy deals on games that you can balloon your library really quickly even on a budget, especially if you take advantage of sites like Humble. You get so much value back from cheap as fuck games you never get to realise on console.

2

u/Maximum-Objective-39 Sep 10 '26

Equally important, even with these godawful component prices, unless you're utterly committed to playing the fanciest AAA games at the highest res, you're gonna potentially get 6 to 8 years of utility out of a PC these days.

It's the flip side of hardware no longer advancing by leaps and bounds.

7

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

For sure. I'm very glad I built my PC a few years ago before prices got insane.

2

u/FinalOdyssey Sep 10 '26

I think saying "almost equally" is really disregarding a lot of the great things about the Xbox ecosystem as opposed to what Sony is doing. Options for digitizing your physical disks so discless/PC systems can play them, free PC versions of games with Play Anywhere, they managed to secure Kojima for the next (at least) ten years, they're moving back into exclusivity as the majority of players were calling for to make their platform more enticing. There's still a lot of unknowns and some of the decisions are questionable but I think it's fair to give credit and not pull them down with this absolute farce that is Sony right now.

But the US is falling lol. Rapidly...

-1

u/bxzidff Sep 10 '26

Granted, Microsoft and Xbox are almost equally shit at the moment.

And thus we will see more fake outrage articles against Valve

2

u/Flying_Forearm Sep 10 '26

"fake outrage'. There are emails proving that they've been enforcing price parity on developers to maintain their massive cut and market dominance.

-4

u/BloodyWarlord117 Sep 10 '26

PC is not really better, Steam is not your friend

8

u/themostreasonableman Sep 10 '26

Sony has always been like this. Always. They're somehow still around, because occasionally they do revolutionary shit and release truly halo products.

1

u/Flying_Forearm Sep 10 '26

What revolutionary shit?

2

u/themostreasonableman Sep 10 '26

The casette walkman, CD Players, The Discman (portable personal cd players with super long anti-skip), Vaio Laptops, Minidiscs and the associated players, Playstation 1, 2, 3... a few pretty legendary over-ear headphones.

I used to be a major fan, but there's only so long you can watch someone you like stab themselves in the foot with a rusty nail.

3

u/Havictos Sep 10 '26

It happens every. single. time. They think they're king of the hill and then they trip over their own dick because they thought they could get away with whatever.

1

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

All about maximizing short-term profit.

3

u/bzngabazooka Sep 10 '26

It happens with Sony. They get cocky, they fumble hard and then they try to catch up on the next system. It’s like the PS3 era but 20X more impact on their terrible decision making skills right now.

3

u/HotDogShawarma Sep 10 '26

They are banking on GTA 6 being the thing that makes them money by effectively advertising PlayStation as THE place to play GTA VI. Why bother wasting money somewhere else when the biggest game in the world is going to bring players to you anyway?

(I hate this fwiw)

3

u/SpenzoTM Sep 10 '26

Idk about the xbox community but the issue is also a lot of PlayStation fans are fucking spineless, wasn’t there supposed to be a black out boycott some people were organizing? Even that some people wanted it delayed for the MW4 beta. I hate to say this but part of me hopes the ps6 flops

1

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

Of course, there's every chance the PS6 launch is a disaster like the PS5 was.

2

u/SpenzoTM Sep 11 '26

To be fair wasn't the ps5 a disaster because of scalpers? (which will probably happen to ps6 as scalping seems to still be an issue (which people shouldn't cave into) as I saw the Zelda Switch 2 game and console already on ebay for sale).

Scalping aside I hope there is some realization for whenever the ps6 happens and vote with their wallets

1

u/theinfernumflame Sep 11 '26

It was, but it took a long time before anything was really done to mitigate that problem. I got lucky enough to buy my PS5 directly from Sony at MSRP some years after it came out. But that was before they tanked their reputation with a bunch of anti-consumer business decisions.

u/dweakz Sep 10 '26

Hubris: The Story of Sony

1

u/SentinelsEdge Sep 10 '26

Yeah exactly. I've have every generation they released besides PS3 (all friends were on the 360 so I joined them). But now I think I'm moving back to Xbox for the Next Gen

1

u/nahnonameman Sep 10 '26

They timed it perfectly. They are banking on GTA6 to save them

Considering the recent news that PS5 Pro’s has sold out. Yeah it’s working…. For now.

Give it a few years and this situation is going to bite.

0

u/Ok_Science_8502 Sep 10 '26

They are too big to fail. It's sad but even if 20% of all PS5 gamers worldwide boycotted them (and trust me it won't be anywhere near 20% doing that) they would still be perfectly fine. People are mad at Sony but not so mad that they're just gonna stop playing video games on the console they own

1

u/Turtlefan87 Sep 10 '26

They absolutely would not be fine—shareholders would not tolerate this in the slightest.

4

u/Ok_Science_8502 Sep 10 '26

Well 20% is definitely an overestimation, I'll admit. I'd be surprised if it were even 5%. And if Sony loses 5% of their customers by killing physical games, they will easily make that money back because they now have a monopoly on game sales and can simply charge more. Not to mention other ways of squeezing money out of people that they're trying right now like dynamic pricing

5

u/Turtlefan87 Sep 10 '26

Yeah, I’m sure they ran the numbers on this and that’s why they think they can absorb the blowback from discontinuing physical.

0

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

You are correct. I'm still going to keep playing my PlayStation because I have it, I'm just not buying any more games. But I do still have PS Plus for now since I game with my friends on the weekend.

8

u/Ok_Science_8502 Sep 10 '26

I don't know you or your convictions, so far all I know you're telling the truth and you will never purchase a new PS5 game ever again in your life. But I honestly really doubt that.

3

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

At this point I've been working on my PC game library instead. Every game I buy these days is on PC. Horizon 3 would be tempting but I don't even think it's going to be on a current console, and I'm not buying a PS6 either way.

1

u/Ok_Science_8502 Sep 10 '26

PC is a good option for a lot of people but most gamers are not gonna make that switch for a number of different reasons, the rapidly skyrocketing price of PC parts being chief among them

2

u/theinfernumflame Sep 10 '26

Oh yeah for sure. Like I said in another comment, I'm glad I built it before prices got crazy. Wouldn't even consider it now.

0

u/wally233 Sep 10 '26

Its not as far fetched as it sounds since many people also own PCs or Nintendos. I won't say I'm never buying another Playstation game again, but I'm taking 95%+ of my business elsewhere.

It adds up. Moving away all multiplatform games to PC. Buying older games on PC or going out of my way to borrow from the library or buy used, when in the past I would have considered the PS store as an option. Basically that leaves PS, once they go all digital, with just their 1-2 exclusives per year that I'm interested in. Which I'll be more selective of and wait to get discounted if they are truly great

3

u/Ok_Science_8502 Sep 10 '26

It does add up but Sony will also be making more money on game sales now as a result of having a monopoly and having almost all the money go to them. The amount by which their profits increase will probably exceed the amount they lose by people choosing not to buy their games anymore.

1

u/wally233 Sep 10 '26

Im sure they will but I hope it opens the door to competitors to take share, like when Xbox dropped the ball many years ago.

Sony isn't crying over my $1000 / year, but if they keep putting out and canceling live service garbage, monopolizing the storefront, raising online play pricing, putting out subpar exclusives, and generally being anti consumer then I hope more people also move their business elsewhere. They're already hurting with how much they spend on these ballooned budgets which ultimately lead to canceled projects no one wanted. So I do believe their mistakes are adding up and already hurting them, and my business is a small part of that

0

u/RaisinWorried3528 Sep 10 '26

Yes because the tens and tens of millions of Japanese/foreign consumers will surely leave Sony bankrupt 🙄🙄😂😂

1

u/RaisinWorried3528 Sep 10 '26

They don't have to worry about fumbling a bag if they have the best hardware and software on the market. What don't you people understand about that?

-5

u/liu4678 Sep 10 '26

They think they’re immune with gta 6 releasing soon

3

u/Dont_have_a_panda Sep 10 '26

Gta 6 is the most preordered game in history after the netflix trailer, so they kinda are.... at least for now

1

u/ColinHalter Sep 10 '26

I'm concerned it's going to be a "Cleopatra" situation. The game will obviously sell incredibly well, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll make its money back depending on the budget.

1

u/snrub742 Sep 10 '26

Online will print money, they are playing the long game.

2

u/snrub742 Sep 10 '26

I bought a console (of the current generation) just for it.

I am not alone, and they are absolutely fine

1

u/OokamiTheRonin Sep 10 '26

But they have nothing to do with it, they're just high frim sniffing their own farts.
