First Timer

Well Light got a reality check in that his scheming has to deal with gods of death that can kill him easily enough so he can't go through with his eliminate Misa plan. Also he has to deal with L seeing through his plan to hide both Kiras meeting and I can't help that L was either goading him into saying something or generally about to write Light being Kira off until Light had to salvage his plan not being as smart as he thought. And the bromance continues. And then Light finds out how easy it is to kill someone when you can talk a death god into just doing it. Can't tell if Light on some level really doesn't want to kill L, is disappointed how easy his ultimate win is looking, or just shocked he was able to talk Rem into killing L that easily.

I'm really excited to see what happens next between Rem and L. I feel like it's not a question of if L will survive, but how is he going to.

L referring to Light as his friend is probably the tenderest moment of the entire series.

Thoughts on Light showing Misa his Shinigami?

What are your thoughts on Light telling Misa to send a video saying they stopped looking for Kira but they hope to work with Kira in the future, and for her to insinuate there are more than two Kiras?

Thoughts on Misa saying if she sees Light with another girl, she'll kill him?

Thoughts on Light bluntly saying he doesn't believe in love at first sight?

Thoughts on Misa and Light calling each other Darling and Sweetie?

What are your thoughts on the contrast between the way Rem cares about Misa Vs the apathy Ryuk feels about Light?

Thoughts on Light apparently actually having a girlfriend?

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira and the second Kira made contact together?

u/Second_Cour 22h ago

Not a fan of Kira Number 2’s sudden ‘I love you and I will do anything for you, even die’ romance. Just way too over the top; so cringe. She also comes across so incredibly ditzy…yet the moves she made as Kira were very clever. That character is really all over the place.

Her Shinigami cockblocking (deathblocking?) Light is a good twist.

This show truly masters cliffhangers. Have to exercise all my self-control to stop here before we find out what happens to L.

2

u/Holofan4life 21h ago

You say it's cringe, but it's very much a real thing where you'd have a serial killer develop a fanbase and they would do anything for them. Misa is a little bit more sympathetic because Kira did kill the person who killed her parents; If I was her, I'd probably love Kira as well.

I really liked this episode because we saw different sides of Light and L. Light continues to be thrown for a loop by Misa, and this is our first hint that L may really admire Light. It's just a question of if this is him putting on a show or not.

3

u/Second_Cour 21h ago

Then one can say it's real that someone gets a little bit of power and becomes a homicidal maniac like Light did at the start.

But yes a tiny tiny insignificant population does develop an obsession with serial killers and they're obviously unhinged. Except in this case she hadn't even met Light and yet acts more over the top in love than in any romcom haha. I get the parents backstory but she's still such a caricature

2

u/Holofan4life 21h ago

I mean, there are definitely some people I can think of who went crazy once they got some power.

I don't agree that Misa is a caricature. I think she's a great addition to the show and adds to it. It's great seeing Light and L get all flummoxed by her.

The thing that really makes her work is she isn't the super genius Light and L are. And that puts the both of them at a loss because they struggle thinking like her.

2

u/Second_Cour 20h ago

How is someone who instantly falls in love with someone and wants to die for them not a caricature? You even basically identified her with the crazy obsessive serial killer fangirl trope, which is a caricature is it not? That's what tropes are.

Yeah, she's not as intelligent as Light and L logically, though she did incredibly clever things: practically: e.g. she covered up her tracks by using her friend to mail the tapes, and create them. She went in disguise to the meeting.

I think it's a good observation that L doesn't really understand her motivations as she doesn't think in his logical way.

1

u/Holofan4life 20h ago

To me, a caricature implies a character that has no basis in reality. That they are so one dimensional that they can't possibly exist. I don't think Misa is one dimensional because she does have layers. She's a model, she has a backstory which is her parents got killed, and she has a reason for liking Kira which is he killed the person who killed her parents. And we also explained how she got her hands on a Death Note.

A caricature to me is Kyoko's parents in Fruits Basket who's parents are mean because the plot demands it. No explanation is given as far as their line of thinking is concerned. And I say that as someone who's favorite anime is Fruits Basket.

2

u/Second_Cour 20h ago

Yeah guess we are using the term caricature to mean different things. She's certainly multi-dimensional.

1

u/Holofan4life 20h ago

I think you mean stereotypical.

Misa actually talks in the episode believing in love at first sight. Yuuichi immediately dismisses it.

2

u/Second_Cour 20h ago

Yeah stereotypical might be the right word, though I think she takes the lovestruck fangirl stereotype. That facet of her personality is definitely still a caricature to me as it's just so over the top: wanting to die for him etc. She's not completely a caricature, but that side of her has been exaggerated to an extreme

1

u/Holofan4life 20h ago

I mean, has it? To you and me maybe, but people like that exist. Misa is like John Hinckley Jr. trying to impress Jodie Foster. If Jodie Foster also happened to be a murderer.

First Time Note Taker, subs

Oh man, Misa's determination is crazy. And she has another Shinigami practically falling for her. So much so that they threaten Light and at the same time agree to kill L. She's a wild card and Light seems to have found out a way to include her in his hand. (I give the "Shinigami kills L" plan 0% chance of coming true.)

And next to the toxic romance, we also have a budding doomed bromance!!! I wonder how truthful L is, but even if he uses it to manipulate Light, it's not hard to imagine there's true feelings behind these schemes. After all, Light is most likely the first person he met that is mentally on the same level as himself.

QOTD:

What are your thoughts on Light getting with Misa to kill L and the resk of the task force?

Gotta throw the ticking bomb at something.

What are your thoughts on Rem telling Light if he plans on killing Misa, he'll kill him?

Ryuk might just be giving shinigami a bad name after all, hmmmmmm...

What are your thoughts on L telling Light he's the first friend he's ever had?

Answered above.

What are your thoughts on Rem on instructions by Light and wanting to prove his worth to Misa planning on killing L?

0%, but I'm here for the spectacle

2

u/Holofan4life 14h ago

I see L possibly feeling of Light like how the Road Runner said he felt of Wild E Coyote in Coyote Vs Acme. Yeah, it's all about the thrill of the chase and trying not to get caught, but at the end of the day what happens if one does catch the other? Then all the fun times are over.

Now, I also think L wants to catch Kira and bring him to justice. After all, he wouldn't be doing his job otherwise. L is probably really hoping that Light isn't Kira because then it becomes a matter of what could've been.

Thoughts on Light showing Misa his Shinigami?

No secrets between lovers!

What are your thoughts on Light telling Misa to send a video saying they stopped looking for Kira but they hope to work with Kira in the future, and for her to insinuate there are more than two Kiras?

In a way this really was short-sighted. And from Light's reaction after the meeting with L he meant the message seriously. Even if he managed to talk himself out of it during the meeting.

Thoughts on Misa saying if she sees Light with another girl, she'll kill him?

I like it haha. Light needs to properly look at his girl and realise what nonsense he's talking when he says that.

Thoughts on Light bluntly saying he doesn't believe in love at first sight?

An ultra-rationalist would say something like that, yeah.

Thoughts on Misa and Light calling each other Darling and Sweetie?

~squee

What are your thoughts on the contrast between the way Rem cares about Misa Vs the apathy Ryuk feels about Light?

Would you call that apathy? I guess you could... Well Ryuk made me think that Shinigami would be more disconnected from the happenings, jsut observing for their amusement. I wonder if Ryuk will change his stance in some way too...

Thoughts on Light apparently actually having a girlfriend?

Seems more like a situationship so far, but I wonder if he initiated it to complete the cover story he had at home, before Misa showed up anyway.

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira and the second Kira made contact together?

Sasuga L. Also Light wasn't exactly in his right mind at that moment, so he kinda made it easy this time.

Apparently not

What are your thoughts on Light telling Misa to send a video saying they stopped looking for Kira but they hope to work with Kira in the future, and for her to insinuate there are more than two Kiras?

In a way this really was short-sighted. And from Light's reaction after the meeting with L he meant the message seriously. Even if he managed to talk himself out of it during the meeting.

Light is just trying to create a convincing alibi.

Thoughts on Misa saying if she sees Light with another girl, she'll kill him?

I like it haha. Light needs to properly look at his girl and realise what nonsense he's talking when he says that.

For real

Thoughts on Light bluntly saying he doesn't believe in love at first sight?

An ultra-rationalist would say something like that, yeah.

It checks out

Thoughts on Misa and Light calling each other Darling and Sweetie?

~squee

Very cute in a messed up sorta way

What are your thoughts on the contrast between the way Rem cares about Misa Vs the apathy Ryuk feels about Light?

Would you call that apathy? I guess you could... Well Ryuk made me think that Shinigami would be more disconnected from the happenings, jsut observing for their amusement. I wonder if Ryuk will change his stance in some way too...

I think Rem caring about Misa like she does is gonna work against them. Like, we have a small sample size, but a Shinigami being this close feels like a recipe for disaster.

Thoughts on Light apparently actually having a girlfriend?

Seems more like a situationship so far, but I wonder if he initiated it to complete the cover story he had at home, before Misa showed up anyway.

It's funny because before, it seemed like he was lying about having a girlfriend. But maybe he was telling the truth after all.

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira and the second Kira made contact together?

Sasuga L.

Also Light wasn't exactly in his right mind at that moment, so he kinda made it easy this time.

Light can make certain things obvious

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.

Names need not be written down.

Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.

I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.

I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show is good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth for the first time this week. I really enjoyed it and its endless creativity. It was way darker than I was expecting.

Recapping the end of the last episode.

Oh, okay. Light got with Misa to kill L and the rest of the task force.

Devious Light

Light now showing Misa his Shinigami.

She takes it surprisingly well

L with the task force

He's going over the street tapes

He wants detective Yagami to follow his son.

Big popsicle

Rem be looking thicc

Misa explaining all she's done to throw people off the scent.

Light tells Misa to send a video saying they stopped looking for Kira but they hope to work with Kira in the future.

And also make it seem there are more than two Kiras.

Clever Light

Misa says she'll do so, but only if he agrees to go on a date with her once a week.

Light then explains L suspects he is Kira and he's trying to prove his innocence.

Can't appear too close to each other.

He has to be seen with other girls.

"If I see you with another girl, I'll kill you."

Yandere much?

This reminds me of Natural Born Killers.

I love Misa asking if he believes in love at first sight and Light just bluntly says "No". And then we move on XD

I also love Misa and Light calling each other Darling and Sweetie.

And then Rem says if Light kills Misa, he will kill Light.

It's interesting Rem cares so much about Misa when compared to the complete and total apathy Ryuk feels about Light. He's even said he doesn't care if L beats him.

Misa leaving now

Light is shook up by a Shinigami threatening to kill him.

Misa tells Rem not to kill Light

Light the ol' gentleman!

He's trying to find ways to get rid of Misa.

And she's famous. May God help us all.

Light contends he needs to focus on how to use Misa's eyes to get rid of L.

Breakfast time

It's a shame because the mom and sister seems so normal.

At school now

Misa's final message will be re-routed to task force headquarters.

Who is this?

I guess this is the girl Light went on a date with on episode 4?

And she's his girlfriend. Interesting.

At police headquarters

Misa says what Kira instructed her to.

L thinks Kira and the second Kira made contact together.

The message is just very sus

He suggests the purpose is to hide the fact that they met.

Light calls Kira is acting careless.

L seems to think this proves Kira is not Light.

The way L licks those doughnuts disturbs me.

Light explains what he would do if he was Kira.

That's a lot of sugercubes

"I feel that you're the first friend that I've ever had."

Aww 🥺

Is L being genuine, or is he stringing Light along?

Light walking

Misa followed him!

He invites her over, albeit reluctantly.

The police officer follows them

In Light’s house

Rem admits he developed feelings for Misa.

Light asks Misa if she can get Rem to kill L.

Misa tells Rem doing this would make her love him.

And so Rem vows to kill L for Light.

Well, I guess we have the basis for the next episode.

Overall, this was fallout from the last episode when Light and Misa quote-unquote "got together". It's mainly as a means to get L killed, and now the stage is set for his death to be carried out. I'd say the big development was in how protective Rem is about Misa. He really loves her and doesn't want to see her get hurt. Even though he says he can't die if he gives L's life to Light, I wonder if something will happen to him that leads to Misa's demise. I know Light says he wants L to die, but maybe it's a cover to try and get Misa out of the equation.

I also wonder how Light’s girlfriend will factor into things as we dive further into the story. I don’t see her surviving throughout this, so the question then becomes who kills her. Maybe Misa kills her which leads to her Kira identity being revealed and she gets arrested.

I'd put this roughly outside the top 5. More seed planting, but I like Misa causing Light grieve by her mere existence. She gives me Kenny Bania from Seinfeld vibes. The next episode should definitely be interesting and I want to see how Light inevitably thwarts Rem's plans of killing him. Or maybe he doesn't and that's the big twist.

2

u/Second_Cour 22h ago

Pretty sure Rem is a female Shinigami btw. It's a motherly love.

1

u/Holofan4life 21h ago

Huh, interesting. I don't really get that impression.

I see it as more an unhealthy obsession meant to parallel how Misa feels about Kira. The ol' putting others on pedestals and how unhealthy that can be, you know?

2

u/Second_Cour 21h ago

Well both the dub and Japanese version are female actresses but I get how the dub version sounds a bit low and a tiny bit male

1

u/Holofan4life 21h ago

But do you disagree that both are meant to represent unhealthy obsessions?

2

u/Second_Cour 20h ago

i didn't really think of that watching it, but I guess so. Though I don't really see Rem's protectiveness as obsession or particularly unhealthy. Just seems to care about her and want to protect Misa from Light

1

u/Holofan4life 20h ago

I thought it was pretty obvious when Misa said to Light if she saw him with another girl she'd kill him. And then Rem said she'd kill him if Misa got killed.

Boy, a lot of people wanting to kill Light, huh?

But joking aside, Misa said that because she probably feels no one would treat Light better like she would. And by the same line of thinking, Rem wants to ensure Misa stays safe.

It also highlights the emotional dissonance in Light’s relationship with Ryuk. That is more a matter of convenience.

2

u/Second_Cour 20h ago

Yeah, though threatening Light if he kills the person she cares for seems like a pretty proportionate response; killing another girl for being with Light doesn't haha.

1

u/Holofan4life 20h ago

Well, one is like a mama bear type love and the other is a yandere type love. Misa is a yandere.

I think this is what you meant when you said Misa is a caricature. She's like a caricature of a yandere. But she's honestly one of the better yanderes I've seen.

Anyway, I think the difference is Rem sees Misa as like a parent sees their child whereas Misa wants to fuck Light. But you could say a Shinigami having a parent child type relationship with their Death Note recipient goes beyond what a Shinigami should be feeling. A Shinigami should probably act more like Ryuk does.

1

u/Holofan4life 22h ago

What are your thoughts on Light getting with Misa to kill L and the rest of the task force?

Bold strategy, cotton. Let's see how it plays out.

What are your thoughts on Rem telling Light if he plans on killing Misa, he'll kill him?

Not one to mince words

What are your thoughts on L telling Light he's the first friend he's ever had?

I wonder how much of that is genuine Vs him putting on a show.

What are your thoughts on Rem on instructions by Light and wanting to prove his worth to Misa planning on killing L?

Things are seemingly going according to how Light wants it to.

Watching Dubbed

I love how Misa has such a chill reaction to meeting Ryuk

Misa’s already calling Light her darling. She’s very clingy.

L’s such a little freak. I love him.

The one benefit of Misa and Light working together is that Misa seems incredibly dedicated.

Misa is very unhappy about the other idea of Light being seen with other girls. She might be a yandere.

Whoa. Rem is scary. I’m glad she’s being protective of Misa.

Seems like Light’s parents like Misa. That’s good at least.

Light is scheming up ways to get Misa killed without Rem knowing. This guy has issues.

I dunno how but Light has managed to find someone to date again. He is really good at hiding how unhinged he is

I still can’t get over how ridiculous the voice filtered voice sounds.

L is already kind of on to what they’re up to.

Every time Light talks about hypothetically being Kira it gives his dad another grey hair.

L says he consider Light a friend. I somehow doubt L. This definitely feels like another trick of his.

Misa used Tackle! It’s Super Effective!

“This is the first time in my life that I’ve been provoked to hit a woman.” - Light Yagami. Such an out of pocket line.

Light’s trying to figure out a way to kill L using Rem now. He’s getting his manipulation on.

Rem says they’lll kill L. I have no idea if they’ll be successful considering we’ve got so many more episodes left.

1

u/Holofan4life 3h ago

I love how Misa has such a chill reaction to meeting Ryuk

Her biggest takeaway was how different Ryuk looked compared to Rem.

Misa’s already calling Light her darling. She’s very clingy.

Well, that's her Mister K

L’s such a little freak. I love him.

It was so smart to have L be the eccentric one and not Light.

The one benefit of Misa and Light working together is that Misa seems incredibly dedicated.

She's very ride or die

Misa is very unhappy about the other idea of Light being seen with other girls. She might be a yandere.

Ya think?

Whoa. Rem is scary. I’m glad she’s being protective of Misa.

It totally went over my head Rem was a girl. I thought they were meant to be androgynous.

Seems like Light’s parents like Misa. That’s good at least.

I feel bad for Light’s family because they actually do seem like they care about him.

Light is scheming up ways to get Misa killed without Rem knowing. This guy has issues.

He has a lot of irons in the fire

I dunno how but Light has managed to find someone to date again. He is really good at hiding how unhinged he is

So, is this his actual girlfriend? They seem pretty chummy together.

I still can’t get over how ridiculous the voice filtered voice sounds.

It reminds me of the one Nailz used in the WWF. But that sounded more gruff and somehow even more comical.

L is already kind of on to what they’re up to.

As to be expected

Every time Light talks about hypothetically being Kira it gives his dad another grey hair.

Poor Mr. Yagami

L says he consider Light a friend. I somehow doubt L. This definitely feels like another trick of his.

It kinda feels like Plankton when he called SpongeBob his friend. Though I'd like to think there's some truth to it.

Misa used Tackle! It’s Super Effective!

Why does she think she is, Ayu?

"This is the first time in my life that I’ve been provoked to hit a woman.” - Light Yagami. Such an out of pocket line.

I think Light has some women issues. This is the same guy who talked about women obviously have their belongings on them.

Light’s trying to figure out a way to kill L using Rem now. He’s getting his manipulation on.

I mean, it makes sense. He has another Death Note at his disposal so if say the second Kira technically kills L, it wouldn't fall back on him. Maybe.

Rem says they’lll kill L. I have no idea if they’ll be successful considering we’ve got so many more episodes left.

I think the drama is more in how's L gonna get out of this one.
