Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Comments aren't for promoting your own work

I feel so conflicted right now. And a little pissed off honestly. I don't really know what to do, so I figured I'd just vent a bit and try to get it off my chest.

I have a work I've been regularly updating and I have a reader who pretty consistently comments on every chapter. They usually say something nice, about how they like the writing, or the source material, typical stuff. But every few comments or so they'll also mention something about their own works.

Like, "I love this idea, I wrote something similar, but with character b and a together." Or. "A/B are so cute, in a fic I wrote they did blank too."

And it's not exactly a link or a title, but it's just started to get to me. My fic has a lot of chapters so with all the comments from this one person, the mentions of their writing has been adding up. And it just irks me.

Like, I really appreciate that they're into my work and comment about it. But at some point it kind of starts to feel like a not so subtle poke at me to read their stuff. Which I've actually tried to do!

On another fic of mine they mentioned writing something and I actually took the bite and offered to read it. But the thing is, their works are all not in English, and Google translate sucks, and it's actually painful to read. I did read the work and left a comment. But I've avoided their works since because of that.

So, all at once i feel annoyed with them and sad for them, because their works just don't get as much attention because of the language barrier. And I feel a bit guilty that I'm not giving them the support they give me. We're in such a tiny fandom. I really would be reading their stuff if I could. But then I come back to the rudeness of them constantly bringing up their fics in my comment section.

Agh!!!! I don't like conflict. I don't want to start something, or hurt their feelings, or mute them, because we do actually bond some over our Canon sometimes. But I have this angry little part of me that's fuming. Ugh.

Maybe I brought this on myself. I've had really nice experiences with other people, sharing works and bonding over them. I didn't think responding with "I'm interested in reading your stuff" one time, would mean I'd get hounded about it forever. Though to be fair, it feels more like having a puppy following me around then anything else. Maybe I'm just an asshole.

I'll probably just ignore them.

Discussion (Non-question) I'm suffering- Why did I have to read an unfinished work?!

I'm suffering deeply because I was reading such a good fanfic and I kept reading it until 2 AM for three days straight until I reached the end and discovered it didn't have an ending. Now I'm depreeessed and can't even read or write anything anymore.

Damn, it's because of this kind of good fic without an ending that I only post fics I've already finished and avoid reading unfinished stories. Seriously, never let me read an unfinished fic again because I'm having a breakdown right now.

Questions/Help? Anyone else find the whole malfoid trend weird?

I'm trying to fundamentally understand why r/malfoid blew up. I really am. I mean I've been in this fandom since 2009. But all of a sudden with an AI video and animation female draco malfoy is everywhere. I really don't get it.

Now don't get it wrong. I'm the guy who loved daphne greengrass and harry potter smut fics back in the early to mid 2010s. But I didn't see the virality of it back then.

Now all of a sudden the whole internet has gone crazy for this premise that has been around for at least 17 years and I'm think 'what the hell is going on?'

UPDATE: I think I've finally worked out why the Malfoid trend bothers me, and it isn't because I hate the character.

I've been writing fanfiction for more than a decade. I've been using AI privately to help develop my fictional worlds for the last year or two. I enjoy genderbending, alternate universes, morally grey romance, tsunderes, smut, wish fulfilment, and attractive, powerful female characters.

So I'm not looking down on any of those things.

In fact, that's the problem. Female Draco is remarkably close to the kind of romantic character I like.

A beautiful, wealthy, proud, aristocratic woman with a sharp tongue, questionable family loyalties and the potential to become a fiercely devoted romantic partner? Absolutely. I've written women like that for years.

But there's a catch.

Most of my stories begin where the popular Malfoid romance is trying to end.

My characters are already in relationships. The question isn't whether they'll confess, kiss, have sex or marry. The question is whether they can build something together afterward.

Take my Mass Effect fanfiction. Male Shepard and Miranda Lawson are already romantically involved before Mass Effect 1. Neither knows the full extent of the other's professional loyalties. She's secretly connected to Cerberus, and he's about to become a Spectre. The relationship exists first. The conflict emerges from what they discover later.

Result: Miranda realizes 'oh shit' when she has to revive her husband but the Illusive man doesn't trust her to manage him after revival.

In another story, Jane Shepard discovers her boyfriend has unknowingly been positioned as a romantic intelligence asset against her. She believes he didn't knowingly agree to it, but still investigates the security implications. They love each other. That doesn't eliminate accountability.

Result: She puts him in a holding cell for a week while thinking about what to do with their relationship.

Or take my One Piece fanfiction. My Semi-self insert OC is married to Charlotte Galette and Charlotte Smoothie. Big Mom arranged the relationships for political purposes, and Smoothie was originally meant to execute him if he betrayed her mother.

So what happens when those marriages become genuine relationships? What if their children, household, businesses and shared future create obligations that conflict with Big Mom's instructions?

That's the actual story I want to explore.

Here's an easier experiment.

Give Harry and female Draco $20,000 and establish that they're already married. Now tell me what happens.

Do they invest? Save? Spend? Disagree? Start something? What happens if Draco's father interferes? Can they make an ordinary financial decision without turning everything into romantic insecurity?

I want to know how they function as partners.

My ideal love interest is an independently capable, intelligent, sometimes morally grey, imperfect woman who chooses lasting partnership without surrendering her identity. She can be sarcastic, dangerous, arrogant and even tsundere. But she must remain consistent, loyal, competent and capable of holding her partner accountable.

I don't need her to agree with the protagonist. I need her to judge him fairly. Don't blame him for something genuinely outside his control; do hold him responsible for things he knowingly chooses. And he owes her exactly the same.

I'm interested in established relationships involving people who can cooperate, disagree, make mistakes, raise children, manage resources, have intellectual conversations and construct a shared future. The romance doesn't disappear. It becomes part of their lives.

That's why the Malfoid trend feels like an uncanny valley to me.

She resembles the kind of romantic heroine I want, but the most visible content often concentrates on attraction, jealousy, blushing, romantic denial and the eventual promise of marriage.

I want to see what happens after the marriage.

And I'm irritated by the cultural inconsistency. Female Draco, Drarry, enemies-to-lovers, genderbending and romantic wish fulfilment have existed for decades. Suddenly one attractive anime interpretation explodes and some people talk as though they've discovered something revolutionary.

I'm glad people enjoy it. I'm glad it introduces newcomers to fanfiction. But I'd like the same respect extended to the writers and readers who've been enjoying these tropes for twenty years.

I'm not saying Malfoid can't become a complex character, or that short romantic comics are obligated to be twenty-year marriage sagas.

I'm saying that the viral fantasy is almost perfectly designed to catch my attention, but often stops just before the part I personally find most interesting.

I don't hate the fantasy of Harry getting the girl. I prefer the fantasy of Harry and the girl actually building a life together.

Final Update since I need to make it clear for my sanity:

I've written fanfiction for more than a decade. I don't dislike female Draco, tsunderes, genderbending or romantic wish fulfilment. I dislike the way a familiar, often shallow romantic premise is suddenly being treated as revolutionary, particularly by people who dismiss comparable fanfiction. I prefer stories where the relationship begins early and the characters must actually live with the consequences of loving each other.

Discussion (Non-question) Anyone else fully stop reading formally published work in favour of fanfic?

The title. I feel like mainstream "romantasy", "dark romance", "erotica" (I don't read erotica but many authors have a bad tendancy to shove it into the story even if its not in the synopsis), and even the more niche genres is just really objectively bad and cliche. Like with the same ten plots repeated every time, such as "petite feminine woman who is actually really badass is stuck with a dark haired broody man and they go from enemies to lovers 🥹❤️"

ik this isn't an uncommon sentiment with "booktok" and what not, but has anyone else just FULLY stopped reading formally published works? For a solid year I kept picking up books that sounded interesting and unique before realising its the same plot over and over again.

It might also be that my fandom tends to write AUs more than stuff that's very connected to the source material

EDIT: The general consensus in the comments is that I should be reading more genres and I even got some recommendations from y'all. Thank you all so much, I'm going to be reading them when I get the chances.

Questions/Help? How do you tag fics that have character study and smut?

Like I said on the title, I'm struggling with tagging some of my fics. I've always had a thing for complex characters and pairings, so most of my ships focus on at least a little character study, and some of them have smut in them. The thing is that lately I have found myself having issues with the tags, because I don't know how to tag them. I feel like people expect a full, well developed, long work ", and if I use "character study" it feels like I'm lying. Same with the smut: Even if there is some NSFW, I feel like I'm lacking in that department, and that people will feel fooled if I say it's smut because it's not pages and pages of sex. I don't know if there's a different way to tag them, or if I could just "create" new tags to convey it...

Meme/Joke If I'm a writer I'd be unstoppable

Post image
14 Upvotes

I used to dream of being a writer.

It's just that there are too many good ideas in my head that could be a book if i can write, that is. Or that there's a ship that I want to be together yet I can't because it doesn't exist yet.

I'm always too scared to write because of personal things (and by that i meant that I'm forgetful and unmotivated) I also tend to skip parts! Haha I can't explain anything even to a wall if I tried to.

So yea, I wish to be a writer in my next life so I don't have to suffer with these ideas that I can't bring to life.

But kudos to you all writers for letting me read good literature. You are my lifeline so please keep writing.

Comment Commentary The comment I get on the least thought out fic I wrote in a while T^T

Look, I'll take the compliment, 100%! But it stings a bit lmao

I literally came up with most of the plot as I wrote. The only "thought-out" part was the initial setting. Meanwhile, I usually overplan a fic to the smallest details and write absurdly long outlines xD

Edit: I'm not complaining about the comment! I just find the situation funny

Writing help/Beta How to use the tilde (~) when comveying flirting?

I'm writing an NSFW fic that has flirting in it, and I know the tilde (~) is used to convey that sort of tone, but I don't really know how to use the tilde properly, aside from the fact that goes at the end of a word or sentence. I'm unsure about whether it should go before or after punctuation, if/when it can be a standalone replacement for the punctuation, if there's such a thing as using it too much, etc. If anyone can share tips, it'd be much appreciated!

Edit: today I learned that I am cringe

Lost Fic/Work Search Lost DC Fanfic

So it's Jason Todd centric, and he's Red Hood and has a lot of problems with Batman and then there are people who kidnap him and a little kid that he'd grown really attached to and he's heartbroken because they keep saying they're gonna kill the kid, and then they actually do and I don't remember all the details but Jason dies and Tim reads the will and reads that Jason wants his body burned so he can't come back a second time.

Questions/Help? Is it ok to mention specific apartment buildings in fic?

Hello! I’m writing my first fic currently and I have an apartment building planned to have my OC live in, I do not live in and nor does anyone I know. (In fact it is not even in the same country I live in) But I want to know if it’s bad etiquette to call a place out by name. I also have a junior high picked out but I will be purposefully omitting that name as like.. I do not want to call out some random middle school. So is it ok to mention by name? Thank you.

Edit: Having read everyones responses I will be making it anonymous and mentioning a single word thats in the name of the building to give the MC an example of where they are but not too realistic of a place :)

Questions/Help? own fic got view-botted?

hello! a few months ago, i posted a fanfic, and one week ago, it had around 150-200 hits (cannot recall exactly), and two days ago, i verified to see how much it got...it randomly got to 3,6k?? in the context that most of my fics are around 50 (lowest) to 574 (highest) hits. the fanfics in the picture below are all from the same fandom. did anyone get this?

Discussion (Non-question) /reader fics

Not sure how to start this post, so I guess some context might be the way to go.

I like some really niche, small fandoms. Unfortunately that means that my options, especially when it comes to pairings and just overall romance, are often very limited. Because of that, I usually give everything a try, even fics that usually wouldn’t appeal to me.

But one thing I could never really get into are /reader fics (I’m I writing this right? Is there another name for it?). The whole “you did x” and “you held y’s hand” kind of thing never sort of clicked with me, because it feels like I’m being personally and directly addressed by the author and… that’s just sorta weird?

But like I said, by my own sins (aka liking tiny fandoms) I’m running out of reading material. So I’m just wondering if maybe I’m reading and/or interpreting /reader fics wrong? Like, is there some sort of “mentality” or “view” that you have to have to properly enjoy them?

And just to be clear, I’m not complaining about /reader fics or anything like that. I genuinely want to try to read them, but I never quite manage to because of the reasons above, and want to change that.

Sorry if this post doesn’t make any sense, I could barely make it make sense to myself in my head, much less trying to explain to other people.

Questions/Help? I'm scared of bothering my user subscribers when I post for a new fandom

For the last two years, I have only been writing for fandom A, with the exception of a few one-shots. Now I started a longfic for fandom B, but I don't want to bother the people who subscribed to me for fandom A content. Should I make a new account?

Also fandom A is sci-fi and fandom B is a mildly popular TV show about doctors, so there's not an obvious overlap.
