Is this really the best time to be an A&P student?

Had a couple of my teachers say that right now is the best time to be an A&P student. Most old guys are on their way out I know that but I seen nonstop people talking about how hard it is to get a job even with years of exp. Im on my way to becoming fully licensed in early 2028. How will it get a couple years from now?

Air Force Retirees

I still have nine years before retirement, but I’m curious: for those who retired from the Air Force, what kind of work did you move into, and what should someone expect if they stay in maintenance?

I’ve always dreamed of working for a major airline, but I’d also love to get more time back with my family. I have experience with fourth and fifth gen fighters and currently work in production. I got my A&P a few years ago, and I’m slowly chipping away at a bachelor’s in Technical Management through Embry Riddle.

Nine years will be here before I know it. Any advice on how to prepare?

737 Ground instructor with an embarrassing question

I’m a 737 ground instructor for an airline and we have other ground instructors too. I keep hearing from other ground instructors that they are telling the students that if there is an APU fire in the 737 that the contained compartment, if it burns through, will separate from the the aircraft. AKA the APU and its compartment will fall off from the aircraft if the fire burns through it to “protect” the flight controls. In all of my research I cannot find anything that backs up this claim in our company pages on the systems anywhere. My boyfriend who is an aircraft mechanic says it’s not designed to do that. I want to ask you all though because I keep hearing it. All I can imagine from this convo is raining APUs. If that really is true I can’t see that it will go well for Boeing lol. I’m embarrassed to ask this but I want to figure it out, because if it is wrong I need to address our instructors and management so we stop passing along false and unsubstantiated information to our pilots.

Typo in title - would an aircraft facility purchase this *

Interested in Aircraft Mechanic

I'm 21, recently found about Aviation Mechanic and it got my attention, I used to work in a mechanic shop I have basic knowledge on working on cars I left due to wages I wasn't earning the best, but I got the knowledge and experience in the end.

Just looking to see if this is something worth for someone my age, I want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. I like helicopters and planes and another reason I'm also considering it is my uncle used to be an Aircraft Mechanic and told me that I might enjoy this.

I'm in Georgia, USA if that helps as to what route to take either school then job or apprenticeship. and what I should be doing or have before I join.

Thank you for reading, have a Bless res of your Day.

Finished my A&P classes, now all I need to do it take my exams and o&p's. I've been heavily considering joining the Air Force to work there but I'm not sure if it's a good idea as I'm in my 30s

AA Internal Transfer Question

Hey everyone! I’ve been working in material logistic stores and recently obtained my A&P license a few months ago. Last week, I was fortunate enough to be awarded an AMT-Line position at my current station. I’ve started the paperwork process, including submitting my information for the drug test and SIDA badge. However, my preferred station just opened up and I have good seniority for that position. I haven’t picked up a new SIDA badge or started the AMT position yet. I’m still working at my current station.
My question is, since I’ve already been awarded the AMT position at my current station but haven’t officially started yet, do I still have a chance of being awarded at the other station if I bid on it? Or does receiving the first award make me ineligible for another station?

Has anyone been in a similar situation, or does anyone know how this works?

Written exam

Hey everyone!

I'm currently preparing for my FAA A&P General written exam and trying to decide which study material would be better: Prepware or Dauntless.

For those who recently took and passed the General exam:

Which study material would you recommend, Prepware or Dauntless?

How similar were the actual FAA exam questions to the practice questions?

How many questions are on the actual General written exam?

How long did you study before taking the exam?

What scores were you consistently getting on practice tests before you felt ready?

Thank you!

Anyone using craftsman VV USA wrenches?

Looking to upgrade my wrench set, wanted a matte finish (peened) vs the usual slippery chrome. There's a good wrench set close by locally that's very affordable. Only reason I could see avoiding them is the girth of the raised letter plate might be cumbersome and heavy for my pack out. Any other matte finish wrenches out there?

What tool is used to remove something like this

Have a bunch of these on a heli gearbox using for a non aerospace project. Need to remove them. Thought a regular 12 point socket that was the size of the nut would work but obviously too big. What kind of tool or where would I find such a tool? I am stumped. Any pointers appreciated. Thank you.

Career wise

Hi everyone
I’m currently looking to get into Aviation Mechanics. I do have fundamental background in aviation but obviously it would not be the same as to the career that you guys do everyday. I reside in NYC and would like to get into the A&P program in Vaughn but eventually would like to transfer to SFO. Anyone who currently works at sfo could lmk how are the living expenses there and is it enough for a new hire to live there?

How hard is being a AMT on your body?

Hi everyone, it's my first time on Reddit, wondering if you guys could help me?

So, I'm 22 years old, I have a degree in mechanical engineering and am currently finishing my master's degree in energy management.

Sadly, I only recently realised that I wasn't made for that job.

I was wondering if being an AMT is really rough on the body.

I've seen some people saying that by the time you're 50, it's like you're 70, and stuff like that. I know every case is different, but in general, what do you guys with experience think about the job?

Oh, and one more question: is it hard to manage your time with family?

Can you guys give me some guidance?

Thanks in advance!!!

AA MAINTENANCE HANGAR DIFFERENCES

Hey everyone, (TULE AA MAINTENANCE)

I’m looking to apply for a maintenance position in Tulsa and would appreciate some insight from anyone familiar with the different hangar in TULSA OVERHAUL BASE

I’m specifically considering:

Hangar 6

Hangar 3

AAERO Hot Shop

AAERO Cold Shop

AAERO Intro/After Test Shop

What are the main differences between these locations in terms of the type of work, aircraft or components handled, shift schedules, overtime opportunities, work environment, and overall experience?

Are there any hangars that are generally better for someone starting out and trying to build experience? I’d also appreciate any information about training, management, workload, and opportunities for advancement.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’d like to eventually work on Air Ambulances, where do I start to gain helicopter experience?

In the Spring of 2027 I’ll be graduating and as such I’ve been looking into jobs and have gained an interest in Air Ambulances as I feel like it’ll be more fulfilling than working on airlines or business jets.

The issue I’ve run into is figuring out how to gain helicopter experience as all the jobs I’ve looked into in the field require previous helicopter experience.

This puts me in a Catch-22 type scenario: I want rotorcraft experience but can’t get it as rotorcraft positions require previous experience.

I was wondering if anyone had any insight on what kinds of rotorcraft companies I should look into to build experience before then applying to medical helicopter companies after a few years.

Other info it helps:
I have my A&P, obtained my FCC GROL, went through an additional avionics program and am looking for jobs in the DFW area.

Question for my fellow Navy veteran mechanics

Hey all, I'm a veteran of the navy with 6.5 years AM experience for fixed wing and rotary platforms. I have been out of the navy for roughly 4 years and am trying to receive my A&P hours signed off by the FAA. I provided my DD214 to the ASI and he informed me that OJT record must be provided.

I have attempted to use milConnect and other websites to access my records, no dice. I cant access any of them... am I cooked? Is there another option for me?

My DD214 has all the relevant rating information, so I'm putting this out there to see if someone has guidance or advice.

Experience taking my O&P

Hey everyone,
Since there isn’t really any info or reviews about DME Jeff McCoy located at Dallas Executive airport on Reddit or the internet, I wanted to drop a quick write-up after passing my General and Powerplant O&P.

Everyone seems to say he’ll just fail you, but that’s honestly not true at all. I had a good experience with him. If you fail, it’s because you simply didn't study enough. Yeah, he might be a dick sometimes and say "you should know this" or essentially call you a retard—and well, it’s true. These are simple questions straight out of the 8083 General and Powerplant textbooks and AC 43.13. For the oral sections, most of my questions for Powerplant and General were word-for-word out of Jeppesen.

He’s a normal old dude but he’ll be an asshole if you’re a dumbass, but he’s completely fair if you show up prepared. He has zero patience for guessing, cutting corners, or trying to BS your way through an answer. If you know your material, follow procedures, and act like a professional, it’s a smooth and painless exam. If you try to fake it, you're going to have a rough time.

If you have any questions please drop it in the comments!

Good day.

Ryanair/PAML/Prestwick - PACE

Hi everyone, recently applied for trainee aircraft mechanic position with Ryanair/PAML. I received an interview invitation to interview for the PACE position. I went today and sat an aptitude test, a skills test and an interview. I’ve been told it’s a permanent night shift position, 5 on 3 off. I’ve also been invited to a second round interview. Anyone have any experience with this company/insight into the job. Just a bit hesitant considering I applied for one position and been offered another. Any help/insight would be grateful
