Fire
The house across the street from me, in an older neighborhood on very small lots, burned down the other night. I slept through the entire thing. I’m serious. My car was in front of the house and approximately 30 feet from the burning structure. The entire neighborhood smells like smoke, as does my car. Can I get someone to pay for a professional smoke cleaning?

[Michigan] Can anything still be done about a car vandalism incident from October 2025? We have text message evidence, but police never followed through.
Hi! I’ve never posted here before, so bear with me. I’m trying to help my friend and her mom figure out if they have any legal options regarding a vandalism incident that happened around 10/27/25.
I’ll use fake names for privacy. My friend is Jess, her former best friend is Katie, Katie’s fling is Jake, and Jake’s child’s mother is BM.
**Some background:**
Jess and Katie had been best friends since childhood. I met them both freshman year of high school, and they were incredibly close for years.
In 2025, Jess’s dad passed away after a VERY long battle with cancer. Jess and her family were understandably struggling with the loss. They allowed Katie to stay with them because she had been unhappy living with her parents and had also gone through a breakup earlier that year.
Katie eventually met Jake at work, and they started seeing each other. I won’t get into all the unnecessary relationship drama, but the important detail is that Jake’s child’s mother had been threatening Katie and openly posting on Facebook about vandalizing other people’s cars over him and doing it again.
Jess specifically told Katie not to bring that kind of drama around her home or family.
**What happened:**
Katie continued sneaking Jake over, and BM eventually found out where they lived. Around 10/27/25, someone smashed the windows of the wrong car: Jess’s mom’s vehicle. The windshield was smashed, and the rear window was completely busted in. I have pictures of the damage.
We have several pieces of text message evidence from around the time it happened:
Katie texted Jake asking whether he thought BM had done it. He replied, “She probably did.”
Katie then texted Jess and said she would pay for the damage because she believed BM had done it.
Most importantly, BM herself allegedly sent Katie a text message that appears to directly admit to the vandalism.
I have screenshots of these conversations and can provide them if needed, with identifying information removed.
**What happened afterward:**
Katie continued seeing Jake but never paid Jess’s mom for the damage. Eventually, Katie started insisting that BM hadn’t done it and that she didn’t owe Jess’s family anything. Jake also never offered to pay.
Jess’s family contacted their insurance company, but they were unable to get the damage covered, leaving Jess to pay approximately $1,200 out of pocket for the repairs.
Jess eventually kicked Katie out and contacted the police. According to Jess, the police told her they would pursue BM and handle the situation, but nothing ever came of it. I don’t know whether a formal investigation was opened, whether a report was filed, or whether the case was ever officially closed.
**There’s also a frustrating follow-up to this situation:**
Katie is still with Jake to this day. More recently, BM allegedly vandalized Katie’s own car, smashing the windows, slashing two tires, removing the mirrors, and putting something resembling coolant into the gas tank. We learned about this through a mutual friend who had heard it from Katie’s mom.
Apparently, Katie’s insurance covered all of those damages, and she didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket. I understand that this separate incident doesn’t necessarily prove who vandalized Jess’s mom’s car, but it seems relevant to the overall circumstances.
**My questions are:**
Is it still possible to pursue criminal charges or get the police to investigate the original incident, given that it happened in October 2025?
Can Jess or her mom pursue BM in small claims court for the approximately $1,200 in repair costs, assuming the text messages are admissible evidence?
Could Katie’s original promise to pay for the damage have any legal significance, even though she later denied responsibility and never paid?
What should Jess’s family do if the police previously said they would handle it but never followed up?
Is there anything else they should be doing to preserve or strengthen their case?
I know there’s a lot of history and interpersonal drama here, but I’m mainly interested in the actual legal options available to Jess and her mom. They were already dealing with the devastating loss of Jess’s dad, and this added another financial burden during an incredibly difficult time.
I’m happy to answer questions or clarify anything I’ve left out. Thank you!

UniCourt public record removal ?
Hey, I googled my name and my public record for a firearm confiscation is published online part of public record. I requested it to be removed but they only redacted my name for 6 months. I struggled to maintain a good reputation at my last job, didn’t realize this was online.
Location: Contra Costa County, California
Do I need to get a lawyer ?
The email said:
“…During this 6 month temporary redaction period, you may wish to file a motion to seal this public record with the court…”
How can I “file a motion”?
Please and Thank you

Ca Wage claim trial
CA - I filed a wage claim back in 2024, had a settlement conference (employer didn’t want to settle) now we hav a hearing coming up. What should I expect. I reached out to the Labor Commissioner and the employer didn’t file an answer so I’m not sure if they will show up or not. I’m seeing talk that it could take months to get actual payment if I were to win. I’m almost positive my case is winnable and right now I’m quoted about $9k but I also know it can go either way so I’m hoping and praying.
So what to expect and if you won when and how did you get payment?

Could I take legal action against someone sending unwanted messages?
I have an ex with complicated history. I made the mistake of cheating on them, and it has led to many fights. During 2026 I blocked and unblocked them on Facebook 3 times, after the final time they sent me an Instagram message and I blocked them there. Then they started sending me emails. The emails were not threatening, but just expressing how hurt they were by me. I responded to one out of twenty or so sent from April to August, and we resumed contact for a month before I blocked them again. The night I blocked them, they sent 30 emails saying how much I hurt them, around a sentence long each. Like one said "I can't believe you were cheating on me the whole time, and I kept it a secret" - around 30 emails similar to that.
They sent a few more in the week after, but have since not sent anything more. We also have a mutual friend that has blocked them, but my ex keeps contacting them. For a while they were blocked on Facebook, so they sent them Instagram messages. From what I understand the friend did not block them on Instagram, so my ex would see the "Read" receipts and they directly said "since you're reading these maybe you want to hear them." My ex sent the friend a bunch of messages about how I cheated and how they were upset the friend took my side.
A few weeks ago my friend also blocked them, and then received a handful of emails in a row, but no contact since.
If my ex continues to send emails in the future, can we take legal action? I am in the USA and ex is in Canada
