they don’t wanna shower, not that they dont have access to one, just have no desire to

u/rewarzorig50 15h ago

The transition from 'I'll do it later' to 'it literally does not matter' is the scariest part.

94

u/Geovicsha 11h ago

I haven't given up on life AND I often feel too depressed to shower.

u/PertTain 16h ago edited 15h ago

I've been there. It's not that you don't want to be clean, it's that just standing in the shower feels like climbing a mountain.

u/Acetylene_Queen1 15h ago

Having to use your brain to create thought and do the most simple of tasks like taking a shower is putting one's self into function mode.

This transition from safe, no movement, no talking, listening, tasting, smelling etc mode to sudden opposite of that forces your brain to think, process, face mentally what your going through, how to make it stop permanently, all your self deprecating, your feelings on making your brain (that's working overtime) stop the overload, so you go back to safe space which is typically bed.

Eating, dressing, basic domestic chores, going to work, keeping effort up to stay connected to family and friends, that all fades to black.

u/PowerCordsForever 14h ago

How does one help a significant other that's in this space?

30

u/Acetylene_Queen1 13h ago

I'm not certain that everyone going through it can be helped the same way as any other . Medical care, the right medication , therapy

6

u/CartOfficialArt 5h ago

Its hard to help. Being there for them helps a bit, but it isn't what will get them out of it. Its a deep hole, and takes a lot to just get the motivation to get help. Being there for them, don't make it a "big deal" when they finally do something (ie, if they take a shower after not for awhile, dont shower them with praise), try to encourage lightly (I heard that this helped a few people if you wanna give it a try?), they'll probably deny all help at first.

It's tough to be in relationships like that, and it isn't for everyone. Some people will deteriorate their own mental health a bit trying to help and failing constantly and its rough.

Yeah, being cold after the shower just sounds too hard. Luckily I’m not in that state of mind anymore and I also have a good heater

15

u/ilvtj1s1 4h ago

Missing a shower is common; the change from someone's usual routine is what makes it concerning.

8

u/New-Expression-6833 6h ago

Yup i guess its a symptom for depression as well

4

u/RohR0 10h ago

It's rarely one big thing. It's a bunch of small things that stop feeling worth the effort.

They stop planning for or talking about their future, because they don't expect to be around long term. They don't see the point, they don't feel that anything will ever get better regardless of what they try, and the only reason they haven't already checked out is because they can't guarantee that an attempt is successful yet

37

u/Janiverse_Stalice 14h ago

and in addition to that, they appear changed. More energy, do more, interact with more friends, and seem happy. While most likely doing unhealthy coping mechanism at the same time to distract themselves

442

u/Safe_Presence_9 11h ago

When someone stops arguing and completely drops the future tense.

Fighting, complaining, or even being angry takes energy, it means a person still cares enough about their reality to protest it. But when they completely give up, the friction disappears, and they greet chaos or mistreatment with a blank, indifferent shrug.

At the same time, their vocabulary shrinks entirely to the present. They stop making plans, booking tickets, or saying "someday." The future requires hope because it asks you to imagine a life beyond today. When someone surrenders, tomorrow stops existing for them; they aren't fighting anymore, and they've simply let go of the wheel.

34

u/gigabytemon 4h ago

Depression has brought me to this point. It's very hard to plan for a future you don't believe you're going to have. My family likes that I don't argue or make a fuss about things. It's not that I don't think it's worth fighting for, I just know it's not going to change anything. Ultimately I don't think I'll be alive long enough for anything that needs this energy to achieve. So what's the point of even trying?

12

u/quillseek 3h ago

The hardest thing about falling to this place is, I wish my husband would see me and say something like, "I can tell you're unhappy, let's fix this together" but instead he's the source of my anguish and as I become quiet he just sees it as 1) laziness and 2) becoming compliant and easier to deal with, I guess.

As long as I'm keeping up with the dishes and the laundry he doesn't really give a shit.

I am on the very edge of this. I had a miscarriage 7 weeks ago that is still actively ongoing and doctors refuse to further treat it and instead ‘to wait it out’ until 12 weeks. Cool, cool cool cool. I feel the life fading from me and my hope for the future grows smaller every passing day. I feel like I am on the very brink of this escalating into depression

I’ve told them this btw. Doesn’t matter. Zero care about mental health in this country

5

u/topsidersandsunshine 1h ago

I’m so sorry about your baby. Are you being monitored for infection?

1.2k

u/blackchameleongirl 14h ago

They accept huge things like it's expected and doesn't matter.

Car breaks down, they just get out and walk.

Bad break up, they don't call anyone, they just sit down and zone out to a tv or phone.

Got fired, nothing, just accept it calmly, collect their things and leave.

They give up reacting, because they've accepted the end.

350

u/Sea_Willingness_1536 10h ago

Aside from the 'zone out on your phone' part, it's odd how much that description looks like 'enlightenment'.

I'm saying this because that's my reaction to negative events. Don't give them power. Don't give them drama. Just pack up and move on to things that are more fulfilling.

108

u/pimadd_ 10h ago

Yeah, I was reading the comment, and I thought to myself this sounds like me, and I definitely enjoy living.

41

u/moshimo_shitoki 4h ago edited 2h ago

While “enlightenment” is said to resemble these actions, it comes from a place of equanimity. If you behave this way because your depressed it isn’t the same thing, even if the reactions are externally the same.

33

u/flaaffy_taffy 9h ago

Just sounds like the ability to feel emotions internally without acting out publicly

20

u/blackchameleongirl 6h ago

I don't mean it from a mindset of 'I'll just find another job' I suppose. More you lost your job, you're probably gonna lose your home, you don't have any way of fixing anything. But you just don't have anything left inside to care.

15

u/azaza34 9h ago

Enlightenment is good for staying on the mountain but your ego is there for a reason - interacting with other people.

4

u/Fisher9001 5h ago

It's not about how you behave. It's about how you feel.

→ More replies (3)

45

u/notimmunetohumility 8h ago

I think you’re trying to describe apathy but this doesn’t sound like it. It sounds like radical acceptance over things you cannot control.

14

u/Fisher9001 5h ago

The crucial difference lies in whether you feel emotions that you manage successfully or if you don't feel anything about it.

5

u/IGnuGnat 4h ago

People can adopt an attitude of radical acceptance or suddenly seem very peaceful, just before they end it. There is no more strife when there is an exit plan, and it is imminent.

19

u/TeedesT 5h ago

I have read people who are depressed and suicidal can appear to be happier and more engaged right before the end. I believe the consensus is once they reach the decision and know they will be ending it all a weight is lifted.

13

u/Gr8NonSequitur 6h ago

They accept huge things like it's expected and doesn't matter.

There's a line here between giving up and not fretting over things you can't control.

  • Car breaks down, and you have money / resources to get it fixed, then you do and move on...

  • Got fired but have skills, contacts and a healthy emergency fund? not a big deal.

To some people these just aren't HUGE.

  • Your wife or family member in the hospitol with cancer? Yeah... out of your control but huge and I would expect more of a reaction.

12

u/blackchameleongirl 6h ago

I guess I'm not saying some from a place of privilege. More, the car is broken, they don't have the money for a tow truck, or a mechanic. They don't have enough left to just sit and cry in the car. So they just leave, it'll be towed, they can't afford to get it back, but the emotional bandwidth just isn't left to give a shit. Let the world take one more thing, it already broke you anyway, it doesn't matter.

Unenthusiastic, not present mentally anywhere, depressed, not grooming, not eating good food or what they want to eat. All of these combined.

93

u/HydraKirby 16h ago

I mean you're just describing chronic depression.

14

u/wattro 8h ago

Are you just realizing how prevalent depression really is?

This thread is nearly literally asking for small signs that people are depressed in life.

28

u/The-Reanimator-Freak 16h ago

Well… both.

15

u/Dracofear 9h ago

Where do you think chronic depression leads to?

2

u/[deleted] 8h ago

[deleted]

6

u/wattro 7h ago

If you're depressed long enough that you fail to see how your life can provide value, then suicide ideation begins to follow.

Thinking about all the celebs that off themselves makes me think you're way off in your assessment.

It's almost like you expect a visible sign rather than realizing that is hard to spot a drowning victim.

u/uncertainnewb 16h ago

More isolated, not nearly as talkative with people they used to be talkative with. Sort of a flat affect. Nothing to say. Checked out, even at home.

166

u/stootsy 17h ago

they start selling things that used to be what they loved

111

u/SpicyReptile 16h ago

They might not bother selling it, they'd likely just give things away.

29

u/Nubstix 10h ago

this one hits hard. This is one of those BIG flags.

10

u/naynaythewonderhorse 9h ago

Yeah, I took a seminar on Suicide Prevention in college, and this was one of the very first things we were taught to be cognizant of.

11

u/stootsy 16h ago

ahhh yeah that sounds more right

10

u/Genocode 16h ago

I mean, they could be selling their stuff to then use that money to settle debts? Thats another possibility, if the person suddenly starts settling long standing debts.

22

u/KidGold 16h ago edited 16h ago

also a sign of drug addiction.

edit. getting downvoted but this is a stereotype and I saw it firsthand from 2 friends who didn't make it.

4

u/stootsy 15h ago

that’s unfortunate :/ i’m sorry to hear that.

54

u/Typical_Hope3687 15h ago

Why bother getting up? I have nothing to look forward to. I am just wasting one more day I have no future because I am terminal. I wait for death, but I don’t have an expiration date.

That is my life. I am stranded at home. The only time I get out is to go to appointments, the only company I get is my caregiver. My own family is scattered around the country and they have families of their own.

I go to counseling to talk about the depression. He wonders how I can keep up such a good outlook on life. The answer is I accept my eventual passing, make good on what I have left, became a better parent to my children, don’t take things so seriously and say how I feel even if it offends you to hear the truth.

People around me have had a hard time with that last one. However, when they get through whatever they ask me about they find out that even though the truth was harsh it was correct.

I will pass soon I hope that I touch someone’s heart along the way. That is not for me to decide, I just live for this moment, I don’t know what tomorrow brings.

135

u/Different_Pain5781 17h ago

Stop taking out trash.

73

u/cassia_drift 16h ago

That and letting dishes pile up until they start growing things. Once the basic household maintenance stops, you know things are bad.

66

u/Patrick_Swayze__ 14h ago

I just have ADHD.

47

u/Ok_Tour_1525 16h ago

When everything is just piling up in their home. Laundry, dishes, trash, contents in ashtrays, facial hair, dog shit and weeds in the yard.

3

u/ecce_mono 4h ago

Oh damn it's me

47

u/Alert_Suspect5765 8h ago

When they stop complaining about things that used to bother them. It’s not that their situation got better; they just no longer have the emotional energy to care. Total indifference often looks like calm on the surface, but it’s actually quiet exhaustion.

91

u/rainbow-kid88 16h ago

For me it's always laying down a lot, over spending on take out, over eating, over drinking, eating soda and candy, not going outside...I am going through this post surviving breast cancer. I expected to be happy...but I had little to no support, and even worse my kids dads wife made custody difficult for me which she didn't need to do and made me feel worse than I already felt despite me fighting through so much to see my kids. I think I lost faith in God. I think I still believe there's something because of NDEs people have but I just don't see how it magically is going better in my own life. It's so sad I feel that way. I'm just here for my kids, my cats and my roommate. I really don't care about myself or anything else. I'm also sure this will return and with how low I feel, I hope it all happens quick as long as my kids know I love them.

u/PhilosophyFinal1879 2h ago

They live like me. I haven't slept in a bed in almost 2 years. I eat only to not feel hungry. All I have had to eat today has been 3 PB&J sandwiches. I haven't showered in 3 days. I forget if I brushed my teeth today. I've been in the same clothes for 2 days. I do enough cocaine to make my asshole bleed. Trolling people on social media is the highlight of my day.

I wish I weren't as big of a coward as I am so that I could actually kill myself instead of hoping my body fails sooner rather than later.

493

u/The-Reanimator-Freak 16h ago

You need help and compassion

232

u/gogozombie2 16h ago

Yes. I tried reaching out to friends and family when I saw this coming. They all thought I was being overly dramatic or they didn't believe me. I've stopped reaching out since whenever I do, no one reaches back.

47

u/JaiimzLee 14h ago

We dont choose our parents. Usually we can learn more from an expert on something than from the clueless or unwilling.

45

u/The-Reanimator-Freak 16h ago

Can you go to a detox?

72

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

Not really. I'm behind on rent and don't really have any kind of support network anymore.

49

u/fishman92 13h ago edited 3h ago

Get into a detox. Just go. I orchestrated a situation where I got caught drinking, and was going to be homeless immediately as a result. I had never been to rehab before, so a PHP was decided on as a compromise.

I eventually transitioned into an IOP, and 4 months in I think my counselor is helping me save my life. She isn’t doing it for me, she’s helping me realize I actually can do it; I just need meaningful, direct, appropriate support. I have been in counseling for most of my life, and she is the first person to do this successfully.

I lost half my life to alcohol. I don’t have to lose any more time trying to poison myself into barely functioning, or feeling bad about having done it for so long. I felt that at some point I would just get better or die, and it turns out you have to force the issue.

You will be alive until you die. What is the point in trying? There isn’t one, but there isn’t exactly anything else to do, and what you’ve been doing isn’t working out. You know that by now. Might as well give something a shot. Your life may have felt like it has been over for some time, and it’s probably incredibly disappointing to you that it isn’t. You aren’t a coward. You are still alive, so you are still trying. You get to keep trying until the show is over. Quit trying to fast forward to the end. You’ll get there eventually anyway.

76

u/PopperCherry 13h ago

Yo I have been in your shoes, but with alcohol, and I got really close to killing myself same way. Got an eviction notice, realized literally nothing mattered and left everything behind. Checked into rehab, it’s a place to stay for the month at least, and they can help you find a place after. Material things you will lose in the process of getting help/getting sober do not compare to the loss of your life.

12

u/you_call_it_pop_pop 14h ago

I'm sorry you're in this position.

2

u/Independent-Slip-657 7h ago

I initially mis-read this as “you need held” and that’s probably not wrong either.

101

u/BowlingGreenMassacre 16h ago

so you are a Twitch streamer, then?

78

u/gogozombie2 16h ago

Wow. That is probably the hardest I am gonna laugh for a while.

37

u/BowlingGreenMassacre 16h ago edited 16h ago

Humor is a great way to defeat the doldrums of despair. Sure, it doesn't fix anything, but a good laugh can at least be a quick moment of "niceness" in a life severely lacking such. The trick then is to find more of them, stream them together, and who knows... "joy" might actually find its way into the equation. I mean, life is absurd. It's all basically meaningless, so we are left to just make up a meaning ourselves. Our own meaning. It's ok to be absurd right back. Albert Camus was all about that.

I'm not trying to proselytize. I am just glad I made you laugh. I've been there. I once started to just not look both ways while walking across intersections because I felt like I was a ghost and didn't exist to other people. So I just stopped caring about my own safety. It was a low point that lasted a scary number of years. So I get it. I could never tell anyone else how to make their life better because it's unique to each of us. It's just nice to laugh sometimes.

25

u/Intrepid-Net-9787 15h ago

Hey I really hope, actually believe, that you will do better eventually. Don’t beat yourself up for the process of getting there!

9

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

I'd like to believe that too.

69

u/Turbulent_Heart9290 14h ago

Cowards don't admit to these things in front of so many strangers. You know there's something up with you, or rather, multiple somethings. What you need is some support fixing a couple of things and some self compassion and care.

Hey, no advice, just a message to say I see you and love you however you are, you are enough for me. Nothing you will ever do will change that. You deserve happiness.

22

u/CoughieOhCoughie 12h ago

I have not showered in over a year.

I just changed the shirt and pants I was wearing since August yesterday.

All of my money is spent on fentanyl and although I do not believe that I will over be one of the cringeworthy "statistics", not sure that I care enough to even be "depressed" or self-pitying.

Compared to my life between 2014-2023, the past 3-years have been surprisingly decent as I am finally no longer living homeless in the SFV working a full-time job and never possibly having enough money to afford to live indoors, I would always spend what I made on attempting to enjoy myself instead and then car I bought got stolen and a bunch of other cuck-enforced bullshit in 2019 then between 19-23, I just winged it without uhhhh idk

13

Wait why haven’t you slept in a bed

18

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

I don't own one. I sleep on a couch in a room I rent. This downward spiral started after my divorce. When I moved in here, I didn't see the point.

14

u/sweet8lb6ozbabyjesus 15h ago

If you don't mind me asking, how do you afford the cocaine?

20

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

Work, borrow money/product from one dealer to pay another dealer, that's the most I'll say though because reasons I'm sure you understand.

It's really quite an elaborate juggling act that if I could find the motivation to spend the energy to get out of this cycle instead of this slow march of the cliff would be better spent improving my situation

6

u/sweet8lb6ozbabyjesus 15h ago

That is a crazy way to live. How much coke are you doing a day?

13

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

G a day on average. Sometimes more if I feel shittier than usual, or less if I have the odd happy day.

I don't want to live this way, but I am trapped in this downward spiral, or at least, I feel trapped. There probably is a way out I am not seeing.

13

u/raise_the_sails 15h ago

It doesn’t have to be like this buddy. Your life is far from over. There are resources out there that can make a monumental difference in your life.

12

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

I know. I've allowed my mental illness to win. I don't know how to beat it by myself. I've tried.

You should learn to love thy self. That is coming from someone who has spent a good deal of their adult life hating themself and depressed, but if you have the desire to be happy then you can get there. One small step at a time. Stop associating with nefarious characters. Move away if you can, if you can't block and delete the people who are bad actors in your life. Step by step and day by day

We only get one crack at this thing called life, you owe it to yourself to try and make it worth while. 🙂

6

u/gogozombie2 15h ago

I know. Any reason I say for why I haven't is just an excuse though so I don't know what to say.

8

u/vk_rec 13h ago

Just remember that your brain is feeding you thoughts every day which are all lies. Your brain formed an image or identity of yourself which you believe now is true. Your brain is lying to you and keeping you inside an illusion causing a self destructive downward spiral. You believe you have given up on life, but in reality you haven't, because there is nothing to give up on. You are eternal.

3

u/school-is-a-bitch 12h ago

Your brain is keeping you comfortable, bc coke feels good. Our brains r designed to keep us comfortable, not happy.

2

u/andyrew21345 6h ago

After my breakup, I took notes of all the things I used to do for her and started doing them for myself. Started improving one small thing at a time. First with my hair started using better products. Started flossing every day. Cook a meal in bulk once or twice a week so I can freeze it and have food on hand. Stopped being late (had a problem with that). practiced my guitar a lot. It helped. Start small and work your way up. It atleast helped me stop spiraling because I could point to atleast 1 or 2 small things that are better about my life now. Obviously shit still sucks but its better than nothing.

5

u/seekingtruth24 7h ago

Sister please get some help. Redemption is possible. I know not everyone is religious but have you considered seeking the help of a church or at least a charitable institution in your area? Perhaps you can even work out a deal to stay at a place for some work?

4

u/All-Work-35 10h ago

Telling us took guts. Please keep reaching out, to 988 or anyone you trust.

4

u/Typical_Hope3687 5h ago

If I have heard right you have already taken some big steps:

  1. Admit you have a problem

  2. Admit you can’t do it alone you need help

  3. Reach out for help. The 988 number is a great start

Next step is having the willingness to do something about it.

I speak from experience. I am a 26 yr clean addict. I spent 8 yrs volunteering with helping addicts trying to transition from homelessness and prison. I maybe terminally ill now but as one addict to another, I and many others that are on here and there is always someone on here that are ready to help.

48

u/BarbecueStu 16h ago

This is something that a lot of people don’t see. Even fewer see someone go from super depressed to super happy as the bad sign it is.

16

u/Jeff1N 15h ago

Is there some sort of psychological explanation for why this happen?

I've heard about multiple cases of people going from super depressed to super happy not long after they off themselves

57

u/ThatBadassonline 14h ago

Because they know there’s an end in sight, the pain is about to stop, they have something to look forward to. They’re happy as hell that they’re about to not exist anymore. That’s why it’s a sign to watch for.

5

u/nugohs 15h ago

I've heard about multiple cases of people going from super depressed to super happy not long after they off themselves

They told them how happy they were at the seance?

2

u/Jeff1N 4h ago

No, after the death family and friends reported the behavior change and said they were caught off guard because they thought things were finally improving

95

u/BowlingGreenMassacre 16h ago

They stand outside of a liquor store all day begging for change to buy the cheapest vodka, drink it in the parking lot and pass out for the night on the sidewalk. The next day they are back to do it all again. Nearly every day. For years. In Minnesota winters.

- Am a liquor store manager and these are the bane of my existence. I even offered one of them a job (since they are here more hours of the week than I am, and I work more than full time!) but nah... would rather beg for 10 hrs to get $10. I'd have paid him $25/hr, lol.

34

u/QuietPack787 14h ago

can i have the job?

19

u/BowlingGreenMassacre 12h ago

Might have to wait until 2029. Import tariffs and the mess with truck-based shipping have really impacted the liquor industry. Also, the federal ban on hemp-based THC drinks that may or may not take effect in a few weeks here doesn't help during a period when younger people drink less alcohol. I don't want to get political in this sub... but if you want a job in this industry, you'll either have to hope for employee turnover or a better economy. Fortunately, we have solid long-term employees (for once!) So.. I guess.. Vote wisely!

When they stop making “future me” plans and just start treating every inconvenience like it’s part of the permanent furniture.

21

u/bumford11 16h ago

They're unmoved by both good things and bad things.

22

u/Dear_Picture_7618 12h ago

When they stop caring about their favorite hobbies or things that used to make them smile

8

u/memeatic_ape 7h ago

That's a sign of clinical depression

20

u/Nickulator95 1h ago edited 1h ago

I can probably give some good insight because I am one of them:

  • You become increasingly apathetic towards pretty much everything, from activities to chores to just daily routines. Why take a shower? Why wash your clothes or your bed sheets? Why try to exercise or eat healthy? Why brush your teeth? Why care about hygiene at all? None of it matters anyway.
  • Passively suicidal. You don't actively try to take your own life, but you don't give a damn about your health either. You don't look to both sides before crossing the street, you generally aren't as careful or cautious about stuff as you maybe should be.
  • You become a NEET and start bed rotting. You don't have the energy or willpower to even get out of bed most days. You skip a lot of meals because you just sleep instead.
  • You stop caring completely about your physical appearance and let yourself go. It doesn't matter anyway.
  • You have no future or vision of a future, no aspirations, no life goals. All I ever wanted personally was a partner I.e. girlfriend/wife but after 31 years of repeat failures and no luck whatsoever, you just start to accept your doomed fate.
  • Has gone to their doctor, done therapy for years and tried getting better but none of it has worked or helped in any way.

It's a wonder I'm still alive at this point. If not for my parents and grandparents, I probably wouldn't be. I'm primarily staying alive for their sake, not my own.

"I'm primarily staying alive for their sake, not my own"

This hits way closer to home than it should... Hope you have someone to talk to

"What's a small sign that someone has completely given up on life?"

A noticeable loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, withdrawal from social interactions, and a lack of motivation to engage in daily tasks.

(There, that's three.)

9

u/rocksoultrain 16h ago

On the other hand, these 3 things were definitely-absolutely on my path that lead me to wanting to give up on life. I ended up seeking help when I got to the point of ruminating over who I would name to take care of my daughter.

2

u/Genocode 16h ago edited 16h ago

While it is true that those would be part of what looks like "giving up on life", these exact 3 "symptoms" are also just indicators of burnout. And a burnout is definitely not on the same scale as "giving up on life" lol.

Actually framing these 3 as specific to "giving up on life" is kinda problematic. Because these are not just "regular burnout" caused by work or stress, but also Masking Burnout, Autistic Burnout and PDA burnout as well, so it targets neurodivergents disproportionately.

7

u/unnamedprince 15h ago

two things can be true.

Especially when they overlap.

Wanting to sleep all the time…  Being so tired and just not getting out of bed

10

u/PoorMgmt 8h ago

Used Kleenex on the ground next to the bed.
Cereal for dinner.
Cold pizza for b'fast.
Can't remember when they last watered the plants.
Out of garbage bags.
Stopped recycling.
3+ newspapers on the front lawn.
Using body wash as shampoo.
Stop replying to messages.
Feel depressed while commenting on Reddit.
Missing your grandma a bit too much.
Haven't looked in a mirror in a week.
Your gums bleed when you floss.
Too lazy to go get a flu shot.
Using takeout napkins or paper towels as toilet paper.
Unfolded pile of clean laundry on a bed overnight.
Moldy shower curtain.

I feel like I'm pretty good at this. Does anybody pay for this skill?

6

u/Mindfultameprism 4h ago

Haha I feel a little called out here. Not too depressed but cereal for dinner and pizza for breakfast are in regular rotation at our house.

5

u/Throwaway91847817 4h ago

Pizza breakfast is fine! You dont eat it all the previous night so you have it in the morning.

I think the biggest one, aside from them saying it outright, is total loss of hygiene standards in every sense of the word. Personal hygiene, hygiene in their living space, sleeping hygiene, etc.

There are some neurodivergent profiles that struggle with this as well without it meaning they've given up on life but those people would still generally come across as wanting to live. But its also a indicator for extreme clinical depression. It pretty much signals that they've given up on self-preservation.

8

u/Necrifyre 7h ago

If a natural disaster such as a tornado comes roaring towards them, they'd probably let it happen.

That they're also waiting for any reason such as losing their job or losing that special someone, to do it.

22

u/Greenestolive_ 16h ago

When they suddenly get happy. Because they know the pain is almost over

7

u/SarkantheDragonboi 14h ago

Guys, the post said small signs. All I see in the replies are red flags bold enough to make the USSR blush.

Mine is bad breath. Not rancid teeth, but just bad breath. When someone stops brushing daily you know things are bad.

67

u/Beautiful_Song2450 17h ago

When everything is boring anymore like getting up in the morning doesn't excite them.

69

u/bonniebull1987 16h ago

I don't think anyone is excited to get out of bed in the morning.

25

u/coltrainjones 16h ago

By that definition that's gotta cover most of the world population

12

u/CaptainMagnets 16h ago

I was gonna say... Are there people out there excited to wake up?

→ More replies (2)

21

u/GCU_ZeroCredibility 16h ago

Wait I thought "getting up in the morning doesn't excite you" was just called being an adult o no

10

u/KidGold 16h ago

I can probably count on my hands the number of times I've been excited to get up in the morning other than being a kid at Christmas. Life is nice but it doesn't beat being asleep.

19

u/AlienX14 16h ago

What kind of psychopaths are excited to get up in the morning?

2

u/Used-Height-2487 14h ago

I am definitely not excited to get out of bed.

14

u/BumFarto_ 16h ago

People are excited about another day?

14

u/gaytee 16h ago

I know somethings off when waking up doesn’t feel good. The world soon usually reminds me of how bad it is out there and I have a bunch of anxiety and depression, but everyday I’m still excited to see the sun, hear the birds, am happy to walk the dogs.

If the idea of hope doesn’t exist in your world, please seek help.

u/Mike_Lagas_Foul_Ball 15h ago

Toxic positivity

8

u/BumFarto_ 14h ago

Woah woah woah “toxic positivity?” Gaytee said some good things

4

u/Puzzled-Mistake-584 9h ago

You think hope is toxic? You must really be down bad..it’s one of the only thing that’s cuts through depression on my experience..

so is" given up on life" broader or narrower than depression? can you be one without the other?

7

u/Genocode 16h ago

Yes you can be depressed without having given up on life.

A lot of the responses are just symptoms of depression, not actual signs that someone is giving up. I wouldn't listen to these people.

They stop taking care of their personal hygiene. They just don't. They've given up and don't see a reason to. It doesn't change much anyways. With the exception of being itchy and stanky all the time. They don't smell themselves like others do. It's their smell. It eventually becomes normalized and their accustomed to it.

7

u/saskdudley 16h ago

They are extraordinarily happy because they have finally made their decision. We need to watch for signs. Suicide is real and needs to be taken seriously.

3

u/mslabrat01 16h ago

One thing I've noticed is when they stop remembering little things you told them weeks ago. You bring up that thing you were excited about and they just go blank like it never came up. Feels colder than an actual argument somehow.

5

u/phuggins_RatskinFan 5h ago

Sometimes they're so hurt and exhausted they wish they didn't have to breathe.

2

u/ofajhon 11h ago

A sudden sign of "getting better". They start smiling again, behave like what you would consider to be normal. It's usually because they have made up their mind about finding a way out.

2

u/Sea-Apartment-8727 10h ago

If they used to be very depressed and troubled and then suddenly you see an improvement and they seem unbothered and chill. It's because they stoped giving a fuck about their own problems because they are going to kill themselves anyway.

2

u/thewimpywitch 5h ago

Quitting their job, not looking for a new job, still living on their own.
