Meta [META] Please - STOP POSTING HUMAN MEDICAL QUESTIONS - r/AskVet is for animal health – Not human medical advice

Every day we get multiple posts from people asking what they should do after being bitten, scratched, or otherwise injured by animals. These posts do not belong here and just create a lot of unnecessary work for the mod team, who have to review and remove each one manually.

Do not post here asking:

  • If you need rabies shots
  • Whether you should be concerned about an animal scratch or bite

This subreddit is for veterinary advice not human health. If you’ve been bitten, scratched, or otherwise exposed to wildlife or stray animals, please contact a doctor or go to urgent care or the ER.

Are we horrible people?

I guess I will just get right into it. My husband and I have 2 dogs. My husband has had our rescue pit bull mix for about 8 years (we’ve been together for 4 years) When he adopted him, he was estimated to be 6-7 years old. He is estimated to be 14 years old now and in the last few months he has been deteriorating quite a bit. He has his moments of energy but we especially see it at night. You can hear his extremely labored breathing from 2 rooms away. He almost seems to have sleep apnea and there’s been a few nights we’ve stayed up worrying about him passing. He has frequent coughing/hacking fits (not while eating, just at random times) that last several minutes. These occur at least twice a day, some days more. He spends most of the day and night sleeping. He has developed visible cataracts. He has been nipping at peoples hands thinking they have food, runs into doors, seems to almost be “lost” and unaware when he is up and moving around. Some nights he needs help getting around. We’ve owned him and loved him more than long enough to see the blatant changes in behavior and family had as well. We made the hard decision to make an appointment to euthanize him. Since we moved to a new area, we called a nearby vet to set up the appointment. They asked if we wanted to do a quality of life exam or if we were decided. I said that we were decided as we didn’t want his last day to be his worst day. Scheduled the appointment and spent the past week coming to terms with our decision, crying and mentally preparing.

He spent the day sleeping prior to the appointment and we took him to Dunkin’ to get hashbrowns. We get to the appointment and being that we’re in a new place with lots of smells he is spry and sniffing around. He was doing the best that he’s done in a while. We mention that to the tech and she said yeah, it’s normal, it’s probably adrenaline. The tech was super sweet and takes us into the room. She tells us that since he hasn’t been seen there before they will do an exam. The vet comes in and immediately becomes what we felt was passive aggressive. We relay all of this information of what’s been going on. She spent the 5 minutes she was in there side eyeing us. She listened to his heart and lungs and said it all sounds “perfect” and says “Im not trying to judge you guys but I don’t see a reason to put him down” and then said she wanted to do xrays and blood work and we can talk about options to extend his life. We were caught off guard because extend it by what? A few months? From all that we’ve researched, the lifespan is 10-15 years. This wasn’t a decision we took lightly. She also waved her hand in front of his head and of course his head moved because he could sense it being there. She said in a tone “looks like he can see perfectly fine to me.” and “I mean I can put him down if you guys really want me to but I don’t see any reason to.”

We requested a moment alone to discuss and they left the room.
We had already felt horrible because obviously no one wants to put their dog down. We felt like they were playing on our emotions to try and sell us services. We decide that we didn’t feel comfortable with this clinic. They charged us $88 for the 5 minutes the vet “looked” at him.

Also when checking in, they asked us if we wanted his paw print stamped on paper which we thought was sweet and said yes, figuring it was maybe like $10. Obviously we didn’t get that far, as we ended up not going through with it. Later we looked at reviews to see someone say that they charged $150 for the stamp without disclosing the price prior to putting his dog down.

Are we crazy or is this normal? The vet made us feel like we couldn’t possibly know our dog. We feel kind of gaslit and confused.

Parvo vaccination for 1.5lb chi help

To sum it up, I have a 9-week-old chihuahua. The breeder took him to the vet and somehow only got him half a vaccine shot. She does this with all her dogs, but I’m confused because it’s not legal here, and I don’t think it’s legal where she lives either. We took him to the vet the day after we got him, and they said he looks great. I was discussing his next vaccines, ( to note I did have the paper from her vet she used, it shows half, I was debating to call which as I’m writing this I probably should), and they mentioned that giving half a shot isn’t legal and that all dogs have the same size immune system, not based on weight. I agree with that, but I’m still confused. I messaged the breeder, who is a sweet lady and very careful with her dogs. She explained that they give dogs from 1 to 80+ lbs the same size vaccine, which is why she gives her pups half a shot. This really confuses me. I’m curious, since he got that half shot on the 5th, does it not count? I really want him vaccinated. I’m worried about a reaction, but I don’t think that’s common, plus he already had that half shot. Is it too soon to give him the next full shot on Monday? And will that be his “first” vaccination out of the three? Since the half shot doesn’t count? That’s what the vet said I just need some reassurance, it’s an odd situation

Should I call someone about a duck with a broken bill?

• Upvotes

There’s a pond near where I live, lot of ducks that are well acclimated to people. One of them has the end of its upper bill broken off, you can see its tongue resting on the lower bill. It seems to have been like this a while. Does this warrant a call to anyone?

How much water should my puppy drink

• Upvotes

Hello, we just adopted our 50lb 7 month old mix puppy from a local shelter. He was a stray. I feel like he drinks a significant amount of water. He drinks around 100+ ounces a day. He’s very busy and always moving/ playing. When awake he asks to go outside constantly to play and probably pees every 1-2 hours. The shelter says he’s underweight however he looks fine to me. You can’t see his ribs but can feel them and he has a waist. Overnight he does not have accidents. He does occasionally have accidents in the house however I feel like it’s just because he was a stray and maybe wasn’t potty trained.

He will be going to the vet soon for a checkup and I’ll bring it up, just a little concerned it could be diabetes??

Will treating at this point help or hurt?

• Upvotes

Our dog (5.5y/o) has increased calcium and low platelets with no diagnosis. According to our internal medicine specialist, we’ve done the full diagnostic work up we can do (full body CT, X-rays, liver/spleen/bone marrow aspirates, negative for Addison’s, thyroid issues, fungal infections, etc).

We’ve been told this is cancer until proven otherwise, likely lymphoma. But with no physical evidence of it, any treatment would be pretty experimental. She’s been on prednisone for about a week with no changes to her lab work or symptoms. She’s just slowed down. Not interested in her toys, in her food, etc.

We’re taking her in this week to do some of the experimental treatment the specialist suggested - some l-aspar/other chemo drugs and a cocktail of things to lower her calcium.

My concern is that at this point, without an official diagnosis, any chemo drugs could make things worse. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain, but her quality of life is significantly decreased. Am I wrong in thinking we should wait on treatment to see if anything changes diagnostically?

Best way to give buspirone to a picky, skittish cat? Questions about compounded treats, capsules, transdermal, and liquid

Species: Cat
Age: 2.5 years
Sex/Spay status: Female, spayed
Weight: 11.3 lb
Medication: Buspirone 2.5 mg every 12 hours, started about a week ago for anxiety
Medical history: Full (healthy) blood panel in March
Location: New Jersey

Luna started buspirone recently, and it already seems to be helping in small but noticeable ways. I'm working with her regular vet, but I'd love input from other vets and techs on the best way to give it long term.

For the first week, I've hidden the pill in her wet food. I'm worried it's causing a meal aversion. She's very picky, so I don't want her associating mealtime with bitterness.

Pilling directly isn't a great option. She's highly skittish. I've brushed her teeth nightly since she was a kitten, and she still runs from me after two years of routine. It's not dental disease or pain. Her anxiety is the reason she's on the medication.

What I've tried or am planning:
- Pill Pockets and pill wraps don't work. She chews through them and rejects the pill. She licks around Churu.

- A compounded micro-treat from Mixlab is pending vet approval Monday.

- Empty #5 capsules arrive tomorrow, though she tends to chew everything.

- I have transdermal at home, but my vet said it's not very effective for buspirone, so it's a last resort.

My questions:

  1. Have you seen transdermal buspirone work clinically for any cats, despite the absorption concerns?
  2. In your experience, are compounded buspirone treats as effective as the tablet?
  3. Is putting the tablet in an empty capsule a reasonable option, or are there any downsides?
  4. Is a compounded liquid worth trying for a cat like her, or is bitterness still a problem?

Thank you for any insight!

Blood in stool

• Upvotes

Dog - 9 year old 70 lb ish female golden retriever who was otherwise healthy until a few months ago

My dog had some frank blood from her rectum this evening. She has had a few months of mental changes we thought was a stroke. The vet evaluated her and said likely stroke vs tumor vs autoimmune, did labs which were fine, and started her on prednisone. She did a 10 day 20 mg burst that started on 9/2 and then has been on 10 mg per day which we decided with the vet she would continue on for the remainder of her life if it helped. It helped immensely and although she’s still blind in her left eye, will only turn to the right, and is a little slower than our other 2 dogs she has never seemed in pain and still had been playful and eating, drinking, voiding, and stooling like normal.

This evening we noticed she had an accident inside and there was a few spots of frank red blood in another spot, and she had a small amount of blood on her tail. She ate dinner and has otherwise been acting completely normal, no abdominal firmness or distension, etc.

My my question is:

I’m a human doctor and know on long term steroids we usually do GI prophylaxis to prevent GI irritation and bleeding - I have read that dogs can take famotidine for this like humans do and the dose is 1 mg/kg. Is this correct and safe to give?

If she has any further episodes we’ll take her in to the emergency vet but our vet is obviously closed this weekend and if we could start something in the next 24 hours we will.

Little dog bitten, other dog or wild animal?

• Upvotes

Hello all! So my little dog (20 lb, bigger than a chihuahua smaller than a corgi) had a bite on her leg today. She came up to my mom shaking her jaw and licking, and there’s too small puncture wounds. They took her to the vet and she got wrapped up, so she seems ok, but I’m just worried about the origin of her bite!

Now, we have a 6 month on husky (38 lbs) who usually plays with the little dog pretty rough. We’ve had to intervene numerous times because she tries to choke her out (😭) and try to stop them from playing. Sometimes she goes for her legs too, so my family thinks it was her who bit our little dog, but I have my doubts! My mom said she didn’t hear anything, and usually when the dogs play they’re really loud. If our husky does something to hurt the little one, she’ll get pissed off and go after her. So if it was our husky who bit her, I feel like they would’ve both gotten hurt no? I also included a picture. To me they look like pretty deep puncture wounds. If my husky built that hard, wouldn’t she have hurt the actual leg and not just broken skin?? The only way I could think of that my mom wouldn’t have heard her get bit would be if our little dog was outside and got bitten by something out there (bag, snake, rat). She’s pretty small so what if she was bitten by something poisonous and we had no clue until it’s too late? I have a picture of the bite I’m just not sure how to add it, it looks like two puncture wound about an inch (maybe) apart on her back leg right near the joint.

TLDR: I think my husky has been falsely accused and my little dog was bitten by something else, please let me know what you’ve seen in your work!

My dog seems to have a shoulder injury, so what now?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! First off, I wouldn't be here if I had vet money. I may next month, but I'm doing my best on my own right now.

My baby is a 6yo pittie mix. He's 60lbs, up to date on all vaccines and flea meds. We've dealt with skin allergies, which are now controlled since we've avoided wheat, corn, and chicken.

Now that context is out of the way, he's been having shoulder issues. He initially hurt it jumping into a tall car last summer, and he fell and strained something in his right shoulder. We had him take it easy, and it healed in a week or so, from what I saw anyway.

Now I think I may have been mistaken. Maybe it was worse than I thought? Yesterday he started screaming at too much movement (jumping on the bed, walking down the front steps, etc.)He seems to be in pain with moving that front leg. Maybe there was another event that reinjured it, or the weather is just cooling down and making his joints hurt. I'm not sure if this is arthritic pain or not.

So my questions are:

  1. How can I relieve his pain right now?

  2. Does this seem like an injury that needs immediate vet attention?

  3. Would joint supplements help, and if so, what kind?

I appreciate any info and support!!

Sharing my b

My 2-year-old cat has completely changed. She's hiding, barely eating, overgrooming, pooping outside her litter box, and doesn't want me touching her. Is she sick or in pain?

• Upvotes

I'm really scared something is wrong with my cat, and I need some advice. She's my first-ever cat, and I've had her since she was practically a newborn.

She's a 2-year-old female, not spayed, and 100% indoors. She looks almost exactly like a Russian Blue, but I don't know her actual breed.

I found her under my car in a parking lot on September 20th, two years ago. She was a tiny kitten, and I believe her mother abandoned her. I've raised her ever since. She's never been outside since I found her, and she's terrified of going outdoors.

Over the past several months, and especially recently, I've noticed some changes that really worry me.

Her fur is changing color and texture.

Over approximately the past six months, her normally gray fur has started turning brown, particularly around her belly and body. Her belly is also developing white fur. Her fur still feels soft, but it looks spiky, uneven, and separated into little tufts.

She's suddenly pooping outside her litter box.

For approximately the past two weeks, she'll sometimes poop under my bed, under the sofa, or somewhere outside her litter box. But then she'll go right back to using the litter box normally. It's inconsistent.

She still urinates inside the litter box and hasn't been peeing outside it.

She's excessively grooming and chewing her toenails.

She frequently gnaws on the nails of her back paws, sometimes until they crack. She also licks and grooms her legs excessively. She has started licking me a lot, too.

Her entire personality has changed.

This is probably what scares me the most.

She used to be extremely affectionate. She would cuddle with me constantly, sleep close to me, and loved being picked up and carried.

Now she acts like a completely different cat.

She doesn't want me touching her. Sometimes she runs away from me, hides under the bed, and stays there for hours.

She used to sleep right beside me, but now she sleeps at the opposite end of the bed, as far away from me as possible.

I've had her for her entire life, and she's NEVER acted like this before.

She's sleeping in strange positions and seems uncomfortable.

Lately, she'll curl herself into a very tight ball, almost like a fetal position, with her tail tucked in front of her body.

Sometimes she rests her head very low, with her ears folded forward against where she's lying.

I don't know whether she's simply comfortable or if she's curling up because something hurts. I've attached pictures showing how she's been lying.

Her appetite, drinking, and energy have decreased.

She still eats and drinks, but noticeably less than before.

She used to get excited about food and eat enthusiastically. Now she'll eat a little dry food, a little wet food, drink some water, and then go lie down.

She doesn't seem interested in playing or doing much of anything anymore.

I don't want to call her lazy because this isn't normal for her. She used to be much more active and affectionate.

She hasn't been spayed, and her heat cycles seem irregular.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to afford to get her spayed because of financial difficulties.

As far as I've noticed, she's only gone into heat about three times during the past two years, with long periods between cycles.

I don't know whether this is normal or could be connected to what's happening.

I'm really worried.

She's my first cat, and I'm still learning what is normal and what isn't.

I know cats can hide pain and illness, and I'm scared that she's been trying to tell me something is wrong and I haven't understood.

I love her so much. I've raised her since she was a tiny kitten, and seeing her suddenly become distant, withdrawn, and uninterested in things she used to love is heartbreaking.

Money is very tight, but I want to do what's best for her.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their cat? Could these changes indicate pain, illness, a hormonal issue, or something else?

I understand that Reddit can't diagnose her and that she needs a veterinarian. I'd especially appreciate advice on what symptoms are most concerning, what I should ask a vet to check, and how to find affordable veterinary care.

Please don't judge me for not taking her to the vet yet. I'm struggling terribly financially, and vet prices in my small Arkansas town are more than I can afford right now. I'm trying my hardest. Some have suggested rehoming her, but I've raised her since birth, and she's my whole world. I know love isn't a substitute for medical care. I'm just asking for kindness, understanding, and advice, not judgment.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this. I'm genuinely worried about my little girl.

Young dog with CCL injury outcomes when surgery isn’t recommended?

• Upvotes

My 2 year old pup was diagnosed at the vet with a CCL sprain/very mild partial tear. They didn’t do ortho X-rays as he can still bear weight when walking but locks up his leg a bit to not make the full rotation, had lifted up the paw when he was running. The vet has us monitoring and doing at home PT (mainly the PROM bicycle which he hates and fights) and joint supplements hoping to build up the muscle and manage the scar tissue sites enough to stabilize the joint more.

I know most CCL injuries require surgery (which was never on the table but I’m not against if it’s necessary) and so I’m not finding much on prognosis, timelines, etc for the nonsurgical approach unless the dog is elderly. Does anyone have any experience with young dogs going the nonsurgical route and could share what that can look like?

My cat is getting sick, what do I do?

• Upvotes

So this started last night. My cat Agnes, whos about 5 or 6 years old and a spayed girl, 8 lbs, has not been eating. Yesterday she was kinda sleepy all day, which I thought was weird but not bad. But last night I fed her, and she rushed to eat, but then didn't eat anything.

I tried for a while to get her to eat, and wet her food and then refilled the bowl with fresh food. She was drinking water fine and using the litterbox fine. Agnes wasn't exactly lethargic either, just not super playful or interested in food. I managed to get her interested in a churu and then fed her half her dry food with some churu over top.

This morning, I did the same thing and she ate almost the whole plate. I was gone all day sadly, but tonight, she wasn't eating again and this time we bought some patè and watered about half of it down and fed it to her. She drank the water but didn't eat the rest.

Now, what has really worried me is that Agnes has curled up in our cat tree and pressed her forehead against it? I know this isn't good. She has some nutrients so I'm not super worried about that, I just don't know if this is an emergency, or if it is, if it can wait till tomorrow morning (when our vet is open).

What do you think?

Complications With An Older Dog Spay

I decided I needed to get my dog spayed a couple months ago and got her scheduled for an appointment. I have had her since she was a puppy but she was a family dog and my parents never really looked into getting her spayed. She is now 8 years old and just had her spay surgery. I took her to a low cost clinic and she had some complications. I was notified around 9:55am about her surgery and how it went. I picked her up at 12:30pm and was told everything was looking great so far.

This is what was in her treatment notes…

Because of Rose’s age, her uterus and ligaments were very friable (tearing easily). We had to open her up wider to ensure she wouldn’t have any
bleeding or complications. Please watch her closely for internal bleeding (pale gums, severe lethargy). We do not want to put her on a sedative
(Trazodone) today for fear it will mask signs of blood loss. If she becomes active in the next few days, please reach out and we can fill Trazodone at
that time.
Your pet underwent spay surgery while in heat. Spaying a pet in heat can be slightly more complicated due to increased blood flow to the
reproductive organs. Keep away from males for minimum 2 weeks

She didn’t show any signs of being in heat and I feel so guilty for not knowing or checking her further. I am so worried something will go wrong while she’s in recovery. She has been really drowsy but she went potty and she was fine. She is sleeping now and I checked her surgical site, it looks fine. I just hope theres no internal bleeding later on. She’s a great pyrenees and isn’t very active in general. I have been trying to search for similar stories and haven’t found many with happy endings. I asked the vet if they have had any similar cases and was told that these complications weren’t very common. I would really appreciate some reassurance. She looks so calm but I am filled with an immense amount of anxiety right now.

Cat behavior post-blockage. Vet seems apathetic about it but I still am unsure.

• Upvotes

So, my (35) neutered male cat (4) has been home from hospitalization for a Urinary Blockage for about one week now. They said he was blocked and had a UTI (based on a urinalysis of Red blood, White blood , crystals and most importantly bacteria present in the urine). He is starting to pass stool more regularly again (though it's quite soft, not diarrhea but not that far off), and he's been urinating (Varying sizes but none I'd consider in the "coin sized" danger zone, all have been larger or at least around "golf ball" size). He has been eating normally and we are transitioning him to Hills c/d urinary health food which he seems to have taken to pretty well (he still gets some of his old wet food but he doesn't leave the new stuff behind), and I'm adding 4 teaspoons of water to every meal and he always finishes the water too.

He just went yesterday to his primary vet for a follow up exam. They felt his bladder and said it felt good, felt his intestines and said they didn't feel clogged from constipation, they ran a urinalysis and said it came back perfectly clean with no crystals no bacteria no blood. The ER wanted them to check his kidneys but they refused, saying that based on his Urinalysis and his kidney values as the time he was blocked there was no need to do so.

However, ever since coming home from the ER he screams constantly. If he's not eating, sleeping, or using the litter box he screams. He screams while roaming around, he screams while investigating things, he screams while digging in the litter box to prepare to go. He also is grooming his penis area more than I'd like. I'm concerned he's in pain, but the vet has given me some frustrating and mixed advice.

When calling the ER they told me that this "doesn't seem like an emergency" and that if I want their help I need to bring him back in. The first bill ran me $5000 so I really can't afford them a second time.

I've called his primary a couple times about it. The first person I spoke to advised me to try cutting his lorazepam dose in half and replace the other half with Gabapentin. This hasn't had a noticeable change in his screaming. When I asked about him grooming his penis they said he's "just trying to heal himself" and to not worry about it.

The second person I spoke to at the primary told me to take him off the lorazepam entirely. This has not had a noticeable change in his screaming.

The third person I spoke to said he needs to make sure he's on the full dose of Lorazepam, and if he stops peeing go to the ER.

So I've talked to the same vets office three times, gotten conflicting advice each of the three times, and it kinda seems like every vet I talk to is mostly just brushing this off. It seems to me like he's in pain, and I feel like the constipation giving way to very soft stools and the licking his penis should be pretty clear evidence of that, but every time I try to mention getting him on a pain medication I get shut down pretty fast and just told to "monitor him".

Could really use some advice if anyone's seen something similar or if their cats had a rough transition home from the hospital as well. The vets total disregard makes me feel like I'm overreacting, but they don't have to sit here and listen to him crying for hours and hours every day...

what should i do if my cat is sick?

What do I need to do or give my cat to drink (3 years old male cat, not neutered) if he is lethargic? He has had a weak appetite for three days, has a fever, and has been having diarrhea the past few days. They also said the cat vomited on the very first day he started becoming weak. Someone please answer huhu 🥹

Potential cat asthma

• Upvotes

I'm not usually one to go off self diagnosing from what I read off the internet but I am almost certain my cat has asthma.

We've had him for nearly 2 years now. He's a senior boy at 14, but other than what I'm about to describe he is in good health and definitely seems happy, and still has plenty of energy to play.

He will occasionally have what appears to be a coughing fit, it lasts maybe 10 seconds or maybe 30 seconds. He will be crouched on the floor with his neck extended coughing and sometimes his tongue sticks out, he almost looks cross eyed when he does it. Afterwards he is completely fine. He does also nearly always have a snore when he sleeps but I don't know how relevant that is. Sometimes I think he does breathe excessively loud as well when at rest on my lap. He's around 4.6kg and by the birds eye view eye test is not "chonky" on the chart. I would say he has a healthy shape. Like I said he still has energy to play and is always affectionate/does not hide away.

I have only noticed what I describe maybe four times or five times, but after the most recent one which lasted longer than other ones I've seen, I asked my partner who says he has done it a couple of times when home alone with them. I originally thought it was maybe a hairball thing but any time he does this he does not pass a hairball.

What way do I go about bringing up this issue with my vet without seeming too insistent? I feel like other than this issue he is a completely healthy cat capable of living for many years more, but now I'm worried I've neglected him by not bringing up this issue with his check ups.

Stumbling after fetch

• Upvotes

My dog is a 5 year old Australian shepherd/mini American shepherd mix. I will start by saying we do not normally play fetch because he is bad at it. He loves to chase the ball but bringing it back is a struggle. Today I wanted to let him do his thing so I would throw the ball and chase it around the yard when he would just leave it random places to get him a little extra exercise. The temps were in the 50s so I didn't really think it was an issue as we have played outside in hotter temps. We played maybe 10 minutes tops? I got tired of chasing the ball around and brought them inside. My dog carried the ball in and fell sideways into a soft crate. I thought he just tripped but then he took a step and fell over a bit again and then stumbled a bit. It was a very short episode but he was panting heavily (this is normal for him after play). After he stumbled a couple times he was fine. He drank a bunch of water and I gave him an ice cube (a favorite treat I thought might chill him out). I was ready to rush him to the ER but my husband and a friend who used to work at a vets office convinced me he was okay since his gums looked good and he was back to normal. But I am very worried.

He was just at the vet yesterday for his wellness check and to update a couple vaccines and get a cytopoint shot for allergies (his first cytopoint injection ever) . They said he looked great. He is not overweight and has never had any health concerns. Should I schedule him another check up to make sure he is okay? And could the recent vaccines and allergy shot have had an effect since he's never had this issue before?

Kitten has consistent diarrhea

I found a kitten last weekend with my fiance. Took her to the vet to get an age check + make sure she was okay, she was estimated 4-5 weeks old and they suggested formula or wet food. We tried both, for the first couple days she wouldn't eat anything so I bought a high calorie gel to ease my nerves wnd to make sure she had at least something. We were good, and she finally started eating consistently 1-2 days ago. Now, she has diarrhea every other time she uses the potty. On top of this, days 3-6 she threw up about 4x. Some of it was from her belly being too empty (the gel stopped that and I know because it was clear foam) but on about day 5 or 6 she threw up actual food, and a lot.

Im starting to get worried and am considering taking her to the vet but my fiance is not as worried as I am about it so maybe im overreacting and itll work out?? Ive never had a kitten but ive had multiple adult cats and have one currently about 9yo.

Currently, we are feeding her special kitty kitten food (vet suggested and all she would go out of her way to eat) and Purina kitten chow (my neighbor lent it to me as she also has kittens). She also LOVES to chug water from the adult kitties water fountain but google says thats okay for her age.

Is there any way I can stop the diarrhea?? Shes playing and running and acting completely normal so I dont think shes in pain/uncomfortable. Do I have to take her to the vet right away. Please help!!

Is trazadone and gabapentin actually the best solution for situational anxiety?

I have a 25lb 6yo terrier mix who has severe car anxiety. She’s fine local driving to places she knows, less than 15 minute from home. But anywhere that involves highway driving or more than 15 minutes she starts panting uncontrollably, heart racing. we first thought it was car sickness but it’s definitely anxiety. She will happily jump into the car but as soon as we start on the highway or going somewhere not on her frequent locations the panting starts almost immediately.

The vet started her off on 50mg traz and 100mg gabapentin. We did a test drive 3 hours away and it didn’t do anything so they upped it to 100mg traz and 200mg gabapentin. I then went on a multi day road trip with her where I gave her a dose the night before and the morning of 2 hrs before the car ride. The first day of the roadtrip she panted for about an hour before the meds finally kicked it and she was able to sleep, but it wore off about 6 hrs in, which is when we stopped for the night.

Next day we did the same routine but she panted for 2 hours straight before I pulled over and decided to give her another full dose despite it not being 8hrs since the previous dose. That kicked in within half hour and she went to sleep. It lasted about 8 hours and then she started panting as we arrived at our destination.

I asked my vet and he said thats the highest dose they would go. I told him about the extra dose and he said I probably shouldn’t have given her that much but he understood why I did. He did not recommend any other medication.

So is this really the best solution and I just have to accept that she’ll be a mess on road trips? On the trip I tried to do some positive reinforcement where when she was calm (under the medication) and laying down I gave her lots of praise and treats. I don’t think that helped because she still experienced a lot of anxiety and panting that the little amount of treats did nothing to counter.

Odd convoluted growth on dogs leg

I feel like we would have somehow seen this before being that the dog is 90% of the time on our lap or sleeping next to us, but we got home from dinner tonight and picked up our 7 year old pug off the bed we noticed this long odd brain textured growth across the front of her left front leg just below the joint of the leg. We obviously can’t get a vet appointment tomorrow but curious if anyone has an idea what this might be in the meantime. The shape is really throwing me off

cat suddenly has hind leg paralysis/weakness

approx 3 year old european cat, male and neutered. normal weight, no history of these symptoms as far as i know.

About 30 minutes ago i heard my cat puking (which happens from time to time, not an alarming rate i think about once a week) so i didn't really worry about that. a few minutes later he started meowing very loud and i noticed he couldn't move his hind legs very well anymore, he's "stuck" lying down, and he pooped all over. he started hyperventilating later, maybe because he's panicking?
it's the middle of the night here right now so i can't get to a vet right away

Cat urinating on litter mat

Hi everyone. I have a 9 yo orange tabby cat female. She has had an automatic cleaning litter box and has used it no problem for the last 6 months. However the last 2 days i’m noticing urine on the litter mat. She isn’t going to the litter box more frequently, there’s no other urine anywhere in the house, and I haven’t seen any blood in the urine that i’ve seen on the mat. I’m using the same litter and she is going #2 in the litter box. She seems to be eating and drinking as usual. Any ideas on why this could be happening?? Thanks in advance!

Sertraline ingestion

I have two cats, both just over 3 years old.

I'd just finished deep cleaning my bedroom and opened the door to let the cats in while I took a shower. When I came back about 30 minutes later I saw two of my 100mg sertraline pills on the floor.

I know I had a few pills laying loose in a drawer and they might've fallen out during the clean, but I can't remember how many and I don't know if the cats got to them while I was away.

Neither of them are showing any symptoms as far as I can tell, but this could have happened anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour ago.

It seems excessive to go to the emergency vet when I'm not even sure if they got to any of the pills, and they're not showing any symptoms, but I really wanna keep an eye on them.

Any particular signs I should look out for? How often should I check on them? How long before we're in the clear?
