Discussion Violet is boring in a boring way

Violet isn't the only character with a "normal" personality, but other characters with a similair personality atleast have something else going on.

Graves personality wise is pretty much just a moody teenager who wants her parents to pay attention to her. Pretty basic considering everything. But the way the cast talks to her and how she responds isnt totally stereotypical which makes it interesting. Celeste makes fun of her for being moody, she shows a nice side to her when talon asks her to talk to dead for him and she shows interest when haze asks her about a future at the OSIC. Plus she has the whole necromancy and lich thing going on giving her dialogue that isnt about being a moody teenager.

The problem is that all of violets tropes are played completely straight. Nothing interesting is done about her need of validation from her parents. Nothing interesting is done with her being super scared. Nothing interesting is done with her being in college. She talks a little more in depth about her art than just going "jeez this painting looks good" but not enough that its interesting.

The closest we get to something self aware is seven thinking she is cliche and thats it. I dont think her character is like hopeless or whatever but man is the next batch of convo's going to have to carry. A convo of her trying to relate to pocket and them going "what the hell are you talking about" (not literally). Or her owing wraith money for opioids would be enough for me.

Complaint Haters hating on violet need to grow up.

Just because a character is designed pretty, have a normal hobby and is successful doesn't mean you get to make up arbitrary reasons to dunk on the character.

I see the main complaint being that she is "generic" just because she doesn't look like mo and krill or has a landing strip forehead like Yamato.

Comparing her design as generic while Paige is literally a person who likes to read books and can make things in the books she reads come to life. Wow... So unique.. Right? Don't even get me to mention mina. Literally a pretty vampire. So why is there no heat?

People need to stop following narratives on a whim without forming an opinion for themselves. Way I see it people are using this opinion to critic valve so that they can be conceived as somehow having an extraordinary opinion, which is false.

P.S her kit literally has the highest skill ceiling for movement where she can make up wall hops in a whine and slide indefinitely if you're skilled enough.

Discussion Violet situation is getting hilarious

The amount of unique posts discussing Violets character design (I'm contributing hehe), writing multi paragraphed texts criticizing her, slandering her with memes...

Just because a new character is a bit bland compared to the rest (she's not even that bad y'all).

When the actual most important thing, her kit, is actually really fun and gets completely ignored in the discussion

It's just funny because it's not that deep 😭

Complaint "Boring" characters aren't a bad thing

I don't care much for Violet. I voted Harrow over her. It was always my hope Solomon and Baba were going to drop first and second. Everyone else didn't interest me at the time. That being said, Violet's backstory being underwhelming compared to the rest of the cast's being seen as a bad thing is a spectacularly awful take.

Deadlock's charm is simple: make a zany setting, depicts all walks of life within its bounds, then see how they interact when they're forced to work together. You've got war criminals, eldritch visitors, wannabe deities, ancient evils, power-hungry vampires, and joe schmoes all uniting to pursue a common goal. That's the magic.

The game isn't interesting because everyone is a uber powerful, hyper-mysterious DeviantArt OC. It's interesting because people like Paige get to talk to people like Drifter, who get to talk to people like Doorman, who are on good terms with people like Calico, who tried to kill Pocket, who are living with M&K, who've met Vyper, who fucks Billy.

We've got an abundance of characters who are...
- Shrouded in mystery (Seven, Doorman, Baba, etc.)
- Actively cheating death (Geist, Kelvin, Victor)
- Carrying esoteric items the likes of which no one's ever seen (Abrams, Pocket, Graves)
- Are on the bloody path of vengeance (Vindicta, Holliday, Grey Talon)
- Aren't even human to begin with (Viscous, Rem, Ivy, etc.)

All of these guys toy with the limits of the world in fun ways, define the magic + judicial system and set up plot beats that will later be explored.

However, we've also got, strictly speaking, "less interesting" characters who are made more compelling by the fact they're doing something so dangerous (ie. participating in the ritual.)
- Paige is a librarian trying to find and save her brother. The most interesting about her is that she's looking for somebody.
- Billy is a guy with a goat head. He's reprimanded en masse for saying a whole lot of nothing.
- Solomon, although he's alluded to being more powerful than he seems, is by all means just a dude who hangs out in parks.
- Take away the fact that she's a snake, and Vyper is a girl who serves a lot of time. Her wish is "I want a better life."

The simpler lives of these characters doesn't take away from the fact they offer a more grounded view of the setting, away from the fantastical theatrics of everyone else. Solomon is still cool despite being an old guy in a park. Vyper is still hilarious despite being a third rate criminal. Paige is still endearing despite spending 90% of her time in libraries, etc. etc.

Futhermore, the interactions the above have with the "more interesting" characters paint a fuller picture of the world. Thanks to Violet, we now know Victor likes to nude model in his free time. Half of what makes Solomon threatening Seven so good is the fact that he's just a regular dude with nothing to lose. Billy highlights the cultural renown of Baba, and the two are heartwarming to watch. Vyper is the only one who makes Lash viscerally uncomfortable. And so on, and so on.

TLDR; it's fine Violet is a college student who likes to goon. Shut up about her already.

Discussion People wrote Violet off before she even came out

Ive been seeing nonstop hate for Violet since before she was even in the game and honestly Im kinda tired of it. Before she came out people were already calling her gooner slop and "the most Riot Games character Valve has ever made" and that was off of literally 1 picture and like 3 describing words. We didnt know her kit, we didnt know her voice lines, we didnt know anything about her, and people already decided she sucked. Now shes out and suddenly the complaint is that her lore is boring and she has no twist. Like just think about the people who actually made her for a second. Imagine being one of the artists drawing her concepts or the person making her model or her voice actress recording all those lines, and youre putting real time and effort into her and youre excited like "oh my god people are gonna love her, shes so cool," and then you go online and the first thing you see is a bunch of people whining that shes boring and calling her slop before they even played her. That would suck so bad and I dont think people think about that enough.

Now I do think its fine to not vibe with a character, if you played her and listened to her lines and shes just not for you thats completely fair, not every hero has to be everyone's favorite. But lets be real about the "no twist, boring lore" thing because if thats the standard then a good chunk of the roster is boring too. Lore wise Id put Sinclair, Vyper, Warden and Lash in that bucket (and I like Vyper and Lash, theyre funny, but if they werent funny theyd be pretty boring). McGinnis is only kinda interesting because shes a cold apathetic opportunist who makes weapons of mass destruction for a company and doesnt care, which is basically just "shes evil." And if were going off looks like people were doing with Violet before she came out, I think Bebop, Lash, Grey Talon, McGinnis, Holliday, Sinclair, Vyper and Warden all look pretty boring, and you could maybe make a case for Mo & Krill aswell. Most of those have been in the game since the start and Holliday, Sinclair and Vyper sat in Hero Labs for months before they got fully added, and I dont remember anyone writing any of them off like this.
Honestly I think a big part of it, and a lot of people have been saying this too, is that shes a pretty faced East Asian girl and people are burnt out on that from other hero shooters. Between Kiriko, D.Va, Luna Snow, Jubilee and others, people have watched that type get pushed hard with skin after skin while other characters get ignored, so they saw Violet and assumed its gonna be the same thing here. And I actually get where thats coming from, its a real pattern in other games, but thats not a Deadlock problem and its not Violet's fault. Shes 1 hero in a game thats never done that and shes getting punished for what other companies did. Thats also why some people get called misogynistic or racist when they say they dont like her, and they act like it came out of nowhere. Like if you hated her off 1 picture before she came out and called her slop and then switched to "her lore is just boring bro" once she was in the game, people are gonna wonder what the actual problem was. If you gave her a fair shot and shes just not your thing thats a different conversation, and most people can tell the difference.

Also I think the haters are a loud minority, she won the vote over Nurse Harrow so a lot of people clearly wanted her. And for the record I voted Nurse Harrow too because I wanted to know what her deal was and she seemed more interesting to me, but I dont mind Violet whatsoever. I think shes cute, I think shes chill, and her voice lines arent the most riveting lore wise but theyre a nice addition to the game. So yeah, why cant people just enjoy characters anymore? Not everything has to be a culture war or about some other game's sins. Give her a chance, play her a few times, and if shes still not your thing thats fine, but the pile on before she was even out was weird and its still weird now.

Question Why is everyone hating on Violet?

100% serious question yall. I’ve seen so many people slandering her name for either being “woke” or “Asian propaganda”(wtv tf that means) or just pain “boring” but I can’t seem to find a post that explains the reason for thinking this, that isn’t also a massive shit post. I’ve played her in a few good games, she’s nothing groundbreaking but is certainly more usable than DD. So like genuinely, can someone explain why people are dragging Violate through the mud?

Discussion My thoughts on Violet

Post image
75 Upvotes

hey. upfront edit here before I js ghost this post forever (and before you bother commenting) personally I'm embarrassed this whole post and all of my comments.

I say this as a reason rather than an excuse, I made this at 3am while already running off of fumes. I'm ashamed of how I tried to defend her and force people to like her. I love her personally, but as people have pointed out I was hypocritical and strawmanning my arguments. I regret even going here, and next time I'll do more research before I consider going here again. (if I ever want to.)

Violet has a mixture of criticisms, good and bad. and criticism is necessary for development for the game and it's player base. I tunnel visioned on the worst parts of the reddit echo chamber and let it effect the quality and entire point of my argument. Violet has only just come out, and maybe I love her so much because I never had massive expectations in the first place, and struggle to relate to those who did as someone who only plays for fun. That's my fault.

Please, I ask of you to not comment and leave this post alone. I won't delete it but I'm not proud of much of what I've said and I honestly doubt it will be worth your time, it certainly wasn't worth mine. But if you do continue, downvote the hell out of me but don't criticise more than what's already been done.

original post:

She's amazing.

Some of you guys are genuinely just haters. Her kit is beautiful (and very fun) and her design may not be flashy or extra detailed but she's no less good because of it?

There's no point in whining you didn't get Harrow and "lost to this stupid bitch" when we're gonna get her next Tuesday anyway. And I bet if Harrow came out first, you guys would have partied and then thrown the same exact tantrum over Violet that's being thrown right now.

She's not boring or stand-offish, her dialogue is actually really funny and full of character, and if you call her cliché I'll just laugh at you because EVERY Deadlock character is a cliché with a fun little twist on them that makes them worth playing and interacting with.

I haven't played enough deadlock to nitpick the technical aspects of her kit (I play for fun and a good time cause I love the art and love that's gone into the game) but what does it matter? Every character has good and bad strengths and as the player you must adapt to those strengths. It's not the kits fault if you just don't click with a certain playstyle.

And I don't want to start a really heated argument over this, I just find it really sad everyone is hating on a good character because she didn't live up to your expectations (of a game in early access)

(Ps. Sorry for posting so much. I just love this game.)

Edit: If you're coming here to say she's boring just because shes a girl who paints, I can call Paige boring because she's a girl that reads books. Boil down a character to their most basic element and they're all boring as hell. Random guy is forced to keep a book. Vampire can't stop killing. edgy teenager with some hand.

edie 2: I give up. 'm too tired. I made this post while tired and with little knowledge on the base of her critisms, and there's more posts on thois subeeddir what do her more justic than I have. I like violet. I'm sad she's so hated when I was sohappy awithher. That's all incoudkve said. Goodnight

Fluff Why does Billy like Violet?

I don’t understand the Billy/Violet conversation.

Violet got a full scholarship to art school, has had her work displayed at MoMA, and apparently makes art that has absolutely no meaningful value to the government according to seven. Like, she’s literally the kind of person who gets institutional recognition for making art that the people in charge deem worthy.

And we’re supposed to believe Billy would be into her? What does he see in her? She’s an overeducated, institutionally recognised artist whose work doesn’t even serve the interests of the people. And her goal that she’s willing to kill for is to have a chance at being a successful artist within the established system. But she gets high I guess so she’s actually a rebel!

Seperate from all the other issues with her bland characterisation, I don’t like that Billy is going down with her, unless it’s him being thoughtless cause he thinks she’s hot or something which could be in character. But given how abrasive he is by default idk how she works her way through that. At least Seven clocks her shit.

She could’ve had so many more interesting angles to her character, more Chinese cultural influence, more of a graffiti artist type, if a perfectionist then an obsessive one, if a nervous fighter then a terrified one, constantly unsure of what she’s doing in her ability voice lines.

Game Feedback Can we address the Aoe slop in this game? Streetbrawl is literally unplayable with soloman and rat king added into the game

There is just too much aoe slop in this mode for this to be enjoyable anymore, They need to address it and nerf the shit out of it, Scrap grenade and Setup bishops are just so egregiously dominate in how much value they get out for the skill expression put in. They also need to address the visual clarity with the new heros as it is impossible to tell whats happening anymore with solomon especially being the culprit. Please nerf it

Discussion ACTUAL problem with Violet's lore

My main irk with her is that she has nothing about her above being a "painter". So, the game is set in mystical cool as fuck 1930s-50s New York. 20th century, a massive amount of art movements are just appearing all over the place. Avant garde, pop-art, constructivism, abstractivism, expressionism, whateverionism. Which one is she a part of? Or maybe inspired by? Idk, maybe anime by the looks of her propaganda posters. She might as well just eat paint for fun. Honestly the type of artist to draw photorealistic pencil portraits of Walter White and The Rock and get on the front page of reddit. Like what are we doing? I wanted an artist character for so long, it's such a great idea, and now that niche is take by some rando with a can of ink but no actual thoughts.

A lot of peole want to shit on Paige for being boring, but at least she has a reason to participate in the ritual and has actual passion and knowledge about her field and constantly makes references to it.

Her gameplay is fine btw, we're not discussing it here, I repeat, we DO NOT care about gameplay

Discussion i really dont get the violet hate

in a game where there are already a ton of characters with insane magical background and lore implications, i find violet's down to earth, relatable character pretty refreshing. just someone who barely gets by in life and wants a chance to prove herself.

wanting to become a god, claim revenge over a killer, or take over long island is cool and all, but if i were given a wish from the patrons i would honestly go with something similar to violet, the ability to be appreciated for and make a living off of doing what i love

Discussion Wtf is this disgusting behaviour toward Violet

Some weirdos are legit harassing Violet players ingame, and there's dozens of posts here just to mock her and people who voted for her

I have never seen this once in my life, you can be mad that people voted for her, you can question her design, but there's nothing that will legitimate bullying people because they supported a hero they want to play and enjoy.

I cannot count the amount of weirdos saying "f*** Violet players", "ret*** should not vote" and overall extreme negativity and cyberbullying ingame (and sometime here) for absolute no damn reasons.

It's the first time I have to mute and block people in this game

Game Feedback I feel like Violet’s very overtuned

Paint wall is just an absurd ability, the fact that it can block NPC attacks like Walkers and Guardians and have infinite durability against every player attack besides a heavy melee is fucking wild, not even Paradox wall can do that, and its a charged ability, like I’m not saying make it like Grave’s skulls but the strokes should have a health bar. She has some of the best mobility in the game with her 2, straight up can slide from one end of blue to another all while having your stamina buffed and get a 30% damage amp with everything. 3 is a little too forgiving but it’s not the strongest part of her kit by far, if she builds Inhib you straight up do no damage though, but it can be put on cooldown if LOS is broken which is nice( doesn’t feel like it sometimes but that’s the magic of multiplayer). Her ult seems a little crazy, straight up “if you step outside you’re silenced and you take a shitton of damage, oh and it can be repeated BTW so fuck you” like it might be the part that annoys me the most cause its more “Giant AOE with super crazy effects” kinda ult, sometimes I get FPS drops with it but my PC might be ass. Not saying this is “THE MOST BROKENEST CHARACTER THAT EVER EXISTED” but she is not fun to go against.

EDIT: I don’t care about her personality or any of her story, this isn’t about that

Game Feedback About Violet, and characters design.

Before making assumptions on anything, please just read this without bias, as i see a lot of bias against negative feedback against Violet.

I really really did not expect this from Violet because she is literally the "creative" archetype under an already super creative game with SUPERB hero designs.

But, her design is like the most straightforward thing i can think of, just paint on floor, paint a wall/platform, paint a colorful cage? Her 3 still life is good, thats only thing i can say.

Rest of her kit PLUS her design just seems like it lacks the sauce most of other characters have.

Like Im not hating her or not anthropomorphising her, its just all design imo, and i dont wanna write much longer, but regarding all the tropes and all the interesting niches around painting (i dont wanna list, but as an example just think about all the surrealists, reality bending moves, thar sole example seems much more interesting) it disappointed me that the deadlock team just chose a brush and a color gradient as something unique to this hero, and that disappointed me.

I just want to give my 2 cents.

Discussion Violet's wish feels odd and somewhat self defeating

Violet, Deadlock's new character, will have you looking for character traits in the darndest places. It's like panning for gold out there in the dialogue player, and the river's already been filtered.

Her wish is a key aspect of her character, and frankly I don't really follow it. Her wish, as said in her conversation with Viscoooos, is that she doesn't want to just wish for fame. She wants to earn it. Instead, her wish will be to use the supernatural power of the patrons to... plug her art like she's fucking Tai Lopez buying YouTube ads.

This feels like a pretty weaksauce wish, and also not necessary one with the strongest internal logic. Because I think most people, especially an insecure artist, would feel like they're cheating a little were they to spend millions on an ad campaign to show off their art. This is like that, but instead of an ad agency you are working with a eldritch demon. I know she "just wants to get her work out there", but this is an opportunity no one else in history has ever had, you are calling God up on the hotlines and asking him to beam your art into every living person's dreams, if that isn't cheating your way into fame I cannot imagine what is.

I feel like a good contrasting wish would be one for a film director character, instead of an ordinary artist. Because you need a lot of money and assets to make films compared to paintings, and I can believe some demented wannabe director that got unjustly blackballed from Hollywood taking truly drastic measures to make their dream film. Not asking for people to like it, but just asking for the opportunity for it to be made and screened.

But Violet here isn't asking for anything like that to aide her in her art. She's asking for a supernatural ad campaign. I know there's the notion that "hey, if they see it and don't like it I'm fine with that", but I feel like anyone with imposter syndrome that succeeded with this wish would inevitably have the permanently overbearing issue of "man, I really did just execute the biggest nepo-manuever of all time, except instead of my real mother it was my archmother that got me in the door"

Discussion In appreciation of Violet (sorta)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Ok, so Violet came out, and the discussions on DL subreddits is as expected, a shitstorm; the people are divided as hell. But with this post, I wanted to just say why I find Violet appealing, especially her 'mundanity'.

After listening to her voice lines and her interactions and giving her backstory a look, I eventually warmed up to her as a character. Don't get me wrong, you can find her boring. I am not going to tell you what to think of her, but to me, her mundanity is one of the reasons I like her, and she feels fresh thus far.

In this game, every character seems to be generally fine with the entire situation at hand, participating in the battle to the death to try and summon an eldritch god to grant them their wish. I don't think there are a lot of characters that seem to be nervous or unwell from everything that is going on, unlike Violet.

Violet is clearly new, she is no fighter and doesn't seem to enjoy killing, brutalising or risking her life, and to a degree, I dig that. She feels normal in a good way, she feels like an average person who, while she has had exposure to magic, only now gets to meet this many insane and weird people.

Her interactions, backstory and character feel more grounded in a good way. In the world of gods and powerful supernatural entities, she is a uni student who is just trying to be noticed and not forgotten, even if it means participating in a death battle ritual.

Of course, there is also the fact that she does drugs and is horny for a lot of characters, which honestly, I also think fits her and goes well along with how 'normal' she feels.

Again, if you find her boring, I am not trying to convince you that she isn't in your eyes, I am just expressing and sharing what I think of her and maybe finding other people with similar thoughts.

TL;DR; I find the fact that she is more mundane and normal an interesting part of her character, especially when compared to a lot of other characters that are clearly way more prepared for the ritual than she is.

Discussion Violet's kit is anything but boring

After both seeing a ton of hate on Violet in general and her kit being "boring" in particular, I really strongly disagree. I think it has a low skill floor, but the potential to have a crazy high skill ceiling.

Her 1, Living Ink, for example, is an ability that seems super simple on the surface but could have some crazy tech. Making cover in lane, encircling/trapping people in pursuit, and maybe giving your partner a barrier if they need to retreat.

I think a few videos have been posted showing off that her 2, flow state, has no lifetime. If you have 1 stamina and open ground, you can slide for as long as you want. (Burst Fire potential for a gun violet?) But quickly making cover/routes with living ink and getting away makes her feel like she has Vyper-like pursuit and escape potential.

Her 3 and 4 are perfectly ok. Having an on command stun and potentially changing the direction for your build based on what permanent buffs you get from the enemy team comp is interesting, and her ult blocking lines of sight of all things make it feel like she could be an answer to a potential Vindicta/Grey Talon/what have you trying to get picks in a team fight. (Not to mention obscuring how many people are in a fight)

When she got the "nimble" tag I think more people expected lots of aerial prowess, but between Solomon and Danny, I've kind of had my fill of aerial heroes for this update.

In summary, I think she has a lot of untapped potential that we'll see a lot more of once people start to get a feel for how she works.

Discussion Violet needs more Identity!

So since Violet just came out, I read her story and listened to her voice lines, played around with her abilities etc. the whole shebang. I do agree with the main consensus that Violet is pretty basic compared to everyone else, now do I think this is necessarily a bad thing? No, but I think the main thing that Violet suffers from isn't her story, its her lack of expression. Which is ironic for an artist funny enough.

She has a really big disconnect with her lore, voice lines and abilities an I think it all falls on the whole magic paint thing. Like we're told that she got a full scholarship to art school and has had her work in the MOMA upstart gallery, but we aren't told exactly why? Is it because of her skill or was it the fact her artwork was magical, and how come we don't get some characters talking about it? I mean considering MOMA is a named location; clearly it has renown. So there would be certain people talking about it. Whether negative or positive is to be determined.

Then there's the fact we get no info on how or why she has this magical paint. Now obviously there are characters who we don't know how they got their abilities, but the problem with Violet is that her magical paint isn't even mentioned. Like we don't know much about where Paige got her powers but at least its mentioned that she's a bibliomancer and we can still assume that she learned from her parents. With Violet we don't even get a single mention of her magic paint. No description of her work, the reaction of the people, or even a signature/notable piece. The only thing we get is in the Billy interaction where she painted Hamsters doing whatever, but that felt lacking in identity.

Speaking of Paige btw, the last bit is going to use Paige as a comparison. Violet's abilities have no identity and when I say that I don't mean mechanically or gameplay wise, but I mean visually. Take a look at Paige's abilities. She uses dragons, sword in the stone, the knights of the round table in her magic. Tales of heroes, fairly tales, good slaying evil. Her abilities show us who she is. A person who believes in the good and magic of the world, who fonds over the ideas of knights in shining armor and heroes winning over evil.

Now take a look at Violet's abilities. 1st is simple brushstrokes; makes sense but there's nothing to make them feel like we're supposed to be VIOLET painting. 2nd is that she rides stroke of paint; again, makes sense but there's no... hutzpah, pizzaz! 3rd is she paints her opponent, stuns them then gets a little stat buff; interesting mechanically but any artist character could have that. Then finally her Ult, which... I'm going to be honest, looks like something Kelvin would've had cause it looks like the aurora borealis.

You see what I mean though right? Violet's abilities, lore, and interactions barely have much to do with her main gimmick and that's magic paint. Now listen, I'm not saying we need her to be jam packed with lore and secrets, she's allowed to be simple but the mere fact is the main problem with Violet is that she has no individual identity. Why did her art earn her a scholarship? Why was it a notable art show? What makes her work HERS!

Van Gogh illustrated his pain using the beauty of the world, Bob Ross showed how calming and welcoming art can be, Junji ito takes the simple and makes cosmically terrifying! What makes Violet's art special and why is she unable to see that through her fear of not leaving a mark on the world.

Discussion Visual clarity with the new heroes

With the release of Violet, the visual clarity of the game once again became a point of annoyance when playing the game. Her ult makes it near impossible to see what happens behind the walls, and her painting mechanic can also add a decent amount of visual clutter. Combine her with Solomon and the lane becomes a complete mess to make sense of. That's my feelings at least. I'm curious to hear what other people think of her on this matter, let's have some civil discussion in the comments :)

Edit: As noted in a comment, I must've not been reading the ult description with enough attention, it does state it blocks vision so I guess the whole part of me talking about her doesn't mean anything anymore. I'm more curious to see discussion about the game in general, not just Violet, would've been better if I didn't mention her at all since my mistake here is the only thing being mentioned.
