When people are chronically late and think it’s a cute personality trait

“Oh you know me, I’m always late for everything! Hehe”

Like no, no one thinks you’re being cute or funny.

You look like an idiot who has no respect for other people’s time.

People who can’t admit they’re wrong

Like, you can show them the facts that prove to them that what they’re saying is wrong, but they will absolutely dig their heels In and make an absolute fool of themselves.

It’s okay to admit you’re wrong about something, take it with grace and save yourself the embarrassment

can we stop putting ads on literally everything

ordered chinese earlier and my fortune cookie had an actual ad inside it

like are you fucking kidding me

we already have ads before videos, in the middle of videos, on every website, at the gas pump and now somehow we've reached the point where a cookie needs to advertise something too

who even thinks of this stuff??

i know it's not some huge problem but it's genuinely getting so annoying how nothing can just exist anymore without a company finding a way to squeeze money out of it

it's a fortune cookie ffs just let me read my fake prediction about becoming rich and move on with my life

The fact that 18 year olds are only an adult when it benefits the Government

Oh, you're 18? Great! You're officially an adult and should now be able to support yourself since your mind has apparently become so mature.

You can take on life-changing debt with outrageous interest rates and gamble on a career in a particular job sector, or you could sign your life away to the government and fight in wars you have absolutely no control over.

You can acquire a criminal record that could ruin the rest of your life, potentially trapping you in an endless cycle of going in and out of jail.

You can legally work, but you'll be taxed heavily because you're single and have no dependents. You also get to pay for all sorts of wonderful things, such as banking fees, government-issued identification cards, and more.

Oh, you want to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines for a private company? Nope! Can't do that because it's illegal, even though we proudly claim to be the "land of the free." We'll happily restrict your career opportunities in the meantime because again your brain is underdeveloped and so only those 21+ can do it and even then that's a gamble its more like 23 to 25 and up can do it.

Want to rent a car? Can't do that either! You need to be 25 because statistics apparently show that you'll find some way to kill yourself with it.

Oh, you want to drink? Sorry, can't do that because, medically speaking, your brain isn't fully developed. However, we'll gladly trust you to carry a massive rifle onto a battlefield and fight for your country.

Oh, you want to exercise your Second Amendment rights? Well, you can't purchase handguns from licensed dealers because we say so. However, we'll happily trust you with a massive rifle the size of Texas that can hold 30+ rounds.

Oh, you want car insurance, something that's legally required in 48 states to drive on public roadways? Well, good luck affording it because statistics apparently show that your undeveloped brain will somehow cause you to hit someone else on the road.

Oh, you want a steady career? Great! I hope you enjoy destroying your body through physically demanding labor or sticking it out in college, where you'll gamble your financial future on a particular career field for four years while paying outrageously high tuition costs.

Of course, colleges will generously offer you a few discounts because they're just so kind. Then, even after graduating, you'll find employers demanding years of experience for entry-level positions because apparently they need Mr. Uncle Sam himself, the perfect human being, to perform the job.

If you couldn't tell, I genuinely hate how this country actively discriminates against 18 to 20 year old's while providing them with very few realistic pathways toward financial independence and stable careers.

We're constantly told that turning 18 means becoming an adult, yet we're denied many of the opportunities, privileges, and freedoms that supposedly come with adulthood.

We're considered mature enough to take on massive financial obligations, face serious criminal consequences, pay taxes, and even die fighting for our country. Yet, somehow, we're not mature enough to make other basic decisions about our own lives.

And then, magically, when we turn 21, we're suddenly treated as "real adults."

Apparently, we're old enough to carry the responsibilities of adulthood, but not old enough to enjoy all of its freedoms.

They're people with an app...

Why in the world do all these people expect their doordash drivers to be super professional and all aces the whole way. These are people with an app, and a tin foil bag they got in the mail from UPS. Seriously, yall need to chill. Most of these people are doing it for the extra money and havent had a lot of really "professional" jobs. Either you guys want your food or you dont. If they have their kid-- so what? You dont know what is going on with their life. The father could be in the hospital and if they bothered to tell you that, you would complain or report them. It's really sad. What happened to live and let live? I dont drive, nor use doordash. I get my own food or eat at home.

Picking up/being picked up

This one goes both ways.

1 - You're expecting someone to pick you up for whatever reason. You should be ready. You should be watching for them. If you're not already waiting outside due to weather/safety, you should be on your way out the door as soon as you see them pulling up. Not waiting for them to get there before you get dressed and gather your shit. Not losing track of time because you decided to watch a movie.

2 - If you're doing the pickup, you should be somewhat accurate in your timing. Don't tell me you're on your way when you really mean "i'm about to hop in the shower, then get dressed, then have dinner, then go grocery shopping and go see a movie". Being "on your way" should mean "i'm heading out the door right now to get in my vehicle and coming straight to you."

“How come” annoys me more than two harmless words reasonably should

I know “how come” is grammatically acceptable. I know it’s an established idiom. But every time I hear or read it, something in my brain goes, “Why. The word you want is why.”

For whatever reason, “How come you did that?” sounds less intelligent to me than “Why did you do that?” I realize that’s an unfair association. Plenty of intelligent, articulate people say it, and I probably use expressions that give someone else the same reaction.

But knowing all that hasn’t made it sound any better to me. I still get hung up on the words themselves. How come? I understand what you’re asking, but my brain apparently needs to inspect the sentence before allowing it through.

I don’t correct people over it. There’s nothing to correct. I just quietly dislike it with an enthusiasm it absolutely hasn’t earned.

Does anyone else have a perfectly acceptable word or phrase that gives them an irrationally bad impression of the speaker, even when they know that impression isn’t fair?

If you say “ATM machine,” I’m saying “automated ATM”

Every time someone says “ATM machine,” my brain fills in “automated teller machine machine.” Same with “PIN number” and “VIN number.”

It’s a tiny thing, but it bothers me enough that I’ve decided to be a little annoying about it.

From now on, if someone says “ATM machine,” I’m going to find a way to say “automated ATM” later in the conversation. You need my VIN number? Sure, let me find my vehicle VIN. Talking about your PIN number? Well, I should probably change my personal PIN.

I want to say it casually enough that it makes them pause for a second and wonder what just happened, it maybe not even notice at all.

And if nobody notices, fuck it. Automated ATM machine. Vehicle VIN number. Personal PIN number.

Who's with me?

When companies inject AI to accomplish an operation instead of just programming it

An example is wanting to paste markdown into Confluence. Instead of just writing code that convents markdown into whatever the hell Confluence uses, instead now, there is an option to ask their AI to improve the formatting of what you are pasting. So, instead of developing it once and then cheaply applying it with each paste, they are burning through many times more resources with each paste to have AI figure it all out from scratch - each and every time.

(And being able to paste markdown or just something with \r\n line endings and having it do a very basic conversion is something I've wanted for about 10 years. Same with pasting into Jira. Use AI to write a conversion! These are not complicated conversions. They could at least write a conversion to handle the most basic stuff: line endings, bold, and italics.)

People assuming things about you.

Ok so I haven't interacted with people in public settings for a *long* time so I don't know whether this is me forgetting it happens as frequently in real life or if this is something that happens from the protection or distance of a keyboard...

But I get really miffed when people take a few words or things you've stated and build this whole story of who are from it? And are so sure enough to relay these things as if they're fact?

I used reddit as a form of interaction with people because I generally don't in real life so I'm not sure if this is a 'here' or 'internet' thing, but within the last few days alone I've been called labelled racist (for questioning a TV shows differing treatment of certain people), lazy for discussing some things my disability stops me doing, inferred that I'm exaggerating my disability because I was able to use public transport (they even assumed & said 'independently' which not only wasn't stated but also isn't true) & have no ability to self reflect when I've been in & out of therapy most of my life...

This is such an irk to my because how do people convince themselves they know so much of life's variables they've got everyone read? How do people think they know my life story from a sentence or paragraph or two?

"The police are not civilians"

There are civilians and military personnel. That's it. If you're not an active member of the armed forces, you're a civilian.

Lately, I've been catching more and more mis-uses of the word "civilian" as used by police officers, which means they are self proclaiming to be military personnel. Added, I found a couple places defining non-civilian to pretty much include your average armed security guard and cash delivery workers as non-civilian.

The police carry firearms as a means of self defense (expanding to the defense of others). The police are not required to retreat in any state and are governed by the same laws as all other civilians with extra employer policies set by their city. They are not subject to court marshals and do not follow military ranks, routines, pay structures, and many many other things. They can be sued civilly and charged criminally, and even their qualified immunity is under scrutiny for widespread corruption and abuse.

Also, there are statuses that are different in definition. Someone who picks up a weapon as a means of warfare is a combatant, and there are specific and general criteria for warfare, combatant, forces, etc.

I'm curious to see what others think on the subject. Am I wrong? I come from a military family, so to me, claiming to not be a civilian is akin to stolen valor.
