Question Sonicake Smart Box (QME-20): Can I loop with one preset and solo over it with another?

I already posted a similar question with a mistake in it (I called it the Pocket Master, but it's the Smart Box QME-20), so here's the corrected version.

While playing, I want to record a loop with one effect/preset, then switch to a different preset and solo over it, with the loop keeping its original sound.

I know the looper has Pre/Post modes, so Post should keep the effect baked into the loop. What I can't verify is whether the loop keeps playing when I leave the looper screen and change presets.

Has anyone tried this? Or do I need a separate looper pedal?

If it works, a video showing it would be great.

Looper experts: I’m having trouble with my Ditto+ because having to double-click to stop the loop—especially when playing within a song—causes me to fall out of time. Which looper would you recommend?

Question Tube Screamer vs. Boss Super OD

I wanna a bright OD that doesnt need to be too-too heavy, I already have pedals that do that. At most a light distortion. so im between these two. Their prices aren't too different so thats not really in mind. I play a lot of math rock if that helps at all..

Turns out playing death metal is just as hard, even with the right pedal. But I press on. Because now I have a fucking HM-2!

VolWah or regular Wah pedal?

I'm new to pedals, and I decided to buy myself a wah pedal. While I was browsing through Amazon, I saw some options and came upon Volume/Wah pedals. Should I buy a volume/wah pedal or just a normal wah pedal?

Troubleshooting EHX Pitchfork midi mod

Has anyone ever installed the EHX Pitchfork midi mod from Occilator Devices? I began and got to the point where he says to check the operation of the switch, power and pots. For whatever reason the shift pots controls migrated to the blend pot and the shift doesn't work at all. He seems to think I fried something but everything looks fine and I've tried to test most and it seems OK but I don't really know what to test as far as the pots go and how that happened. Anyway if anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it!

I've got £230/$300 and I want to buy an overdrive pedal.

More high gain than fuzz. Currently writing some post-rock riffs on a humbucker Tokai Strat. Looking for suggestions and recommendations because obviously I have a list longer than my arm.

SOTB SOTB: Been refining this one for a bit. Board for bluesy/jazzy space cowboy type stuff

Top right is tap tempo for the PH-3. Bottom left is a Trelicopter I colored black with a sharpie. I was running an EQD Hoof on here for a while but honestly the BB Preamp and the Hot Tubes together go into fuzz territory easily with the bass cranked. It is honestly sustain heaven.

Signal path is:
OC-5 > PH-3 > EP Booster > Diamond Vibrato > Ghost Echo > BB Preamp > Hot Tubes > SP Compressor > Trelicopter > DM-2W

No tuner because I have it in my FX loop, which is in the 3rd photo. This stays in the chain regardless of which board goes in front.

Unique drive suggestions…

Holy compensator board… ;)

I’m growing a bit tired of my Lightspeed (had it on the board for 7 years but hardly use it right now.

Browne protein, love hate, blue side is cool, dislike the green side and think the brothers am does the whole pedal better than the protein.

I also have a RYRA Klone hidden underneath, I want some unique drive suggestions to replace the lightspeed and protein slots, let me know!

Testing this Nux Deep Image capture using two IRs in stereo.

Video: https://youtu.be/xbWNoMBSepg

These captures are excellent, just as good as A2 captures, in my opinion. What do you guys think? Have you had a chance to try them out?

NPD ODR-1 sounds great (NPD)

I love how the level really tames the amp volume without losing a ton of the overdrive character and dynamics. Meshes super nice with the dimension c. Sounds really good.

rundown Vintage BOSS OD-1 (Raytheon RC3403ADB) Review – How Does It Compare to the SD-1?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’ve always been interested in classic ’70s and ’80s guitar tones, especially AOR, West Coast rock, fusion, and early hard rock.
Back in 2019, I bought an early BOSS OD-1 Over Drive equipped with the original Raytheon RC3403ADB quad op-amp.
I compared it with my modern BOSS SD-1 and wrote a review on my Japanese guitar gear blog. Here’s an English version of my impressions.
Why I Bought the OD-1
The OD-1 was introduced in 1977 and is one of the most historically important overdrive pedals.
Its design was intended to reproduce the natural breakup of a cranked tube amplifier at manageable volume levels, rather than the aggressive, fuzzy distortion common in earlier effects.
I had heard that the early quad op-amp version was particularly desirable for classic ’70s and ’80s rock, AOR, city pop, and fusion tones.
Since those are some of my favorite genres, I couldn’t resist picking one up!
The Early Raytheon Version
My OD-1 uses a Raytheon RC3403ADB quad op-amp, rather than the dual op-amp configuration found in later versions.
Early OD-1 pedals also appeared with NEC quad op-amps, while later revisions used dual op-amps such as the JRC4558.
The early Raytheon-equipped version has become particularly collectible.
Of course, the chip alone doesn’t determine the sound. The surrounding circuit and component values matter too.
Controls and Power Supply
The OD-1 has only two controls:
Level
Over Drive
There’s no Tone knob, unlike the SD-1.
This makes it a very straightforward pedal. You set the amount of drive and output level, then use your amplifier’s EQ to shape the overall tone.
My early unit uses the old BOSS ACA power supply system, so power requirements need attention.
At the time of my original review, I was using a battery rather than risking an unsuitable adapter.
How Does It Sound?
The OD-1 has a very smooth, warm, and mellow overdrive character.
It emphasizes the midrange while reducing some of the extreme lows and highs, giving it that classic vintage overdrive sound.
The amount of gain is roughly comparable to the SD-1.
However, despite the similarities, the actual playing experience is noticeably different.
To my ears, the OD-1 sounds more open, with a stronger core to each note and better high-frequency clarity.
It’s the kind of sound that immediately makes me think of classic ’70s and ’80s AOR or fusion.
It also has a nostalgic warmth that makes it very enjoyable to play.
OD-1 vs. Modern SD-1
This was the most interesting part of my comparison.
Although the overall gain range and general mid-focused character are similar, I found some significant differences.
The OD-1 has more upper-frequency clarity and a more defined sound.
By comparison, my modern SD-1 sounds darker, more congested, and somewhat muffled.
The SD-1 reminds me more of a Tube Screamer, while the OD-1 feels more like a naturally overdriven amplifier.
I also tried turning up the SD-1’s Tone control to approximately 1 o’clock to see if I could match the OD-1.
Surprisingly, it didn’t work.
The SD-1’s Tone control seemed to emphasize a different frequency range, particularly the upper mids. Increasing it made the sound much brighter, but it also changed the midrange character in a way that moved it further away from the OD-1.
So, at least to my ears, the SD-1 isn’t simply an OD-1 with an additional Tone control.
Which One Do I Prefer?
Definitely the OD-1.
And that’s not because it’s older, rarer, or more expensive.
I genuinely prefer its sound.
It has a warm, vintage, slightly sweet character that I find more natural and enjoyable than the SD-1.
I bought it primarily to use as an overdrive into a clean amplifier, rather than simply as a boost for an already distorted amp.
For classic AOR and fusion tones, I think it’s a fantastic pedal.
Final Thoughts
The early Raytheon OD-1 is one of my favorite examples of vintage BOSS engineering.
It may look extremely simple, but its particular combination of warmth, clarity, and midrange character makes it surprisingly difficult to replace.
I suspect pedals such as the Rivera Double Shaman or Fuchs Plush Drive might appeal to players looking for a similarly vintage, amp-like overdrive character, although they aren’t direct substitutes.

Question What is your pedalboard "theory"?

Weird question but...

You have a collection of pedals. Most of us have far more than we use. Do you make different boards for different projects/sounds? Do you try and run a master board that "does it all"? Do you customize your board as needed for the sounds you want?

For me, for instance, I have 3 boards going at once. One is my gigging board for my main project. The other is my "home board". Its larger and houses my more expensive pedals that I don't want ruined in bars. And then I have dreams of starting another project next year and so I've started making a 3rd board geared toward that sound.

This method helps my indecisiveness, but I have a nagging feeling every so often it's overkill and I should just rock one board and have it be the best of the best so to speak.

Anyway, just figured it would be interesting to get some input, how do you manage your collection?

Recently started this board and coming from using a Boss ME-80 long time ago, this looks fun.

Any suggestion on what to swap/add next? I'm thinking to get a looper

Also, I'm just a bandless bedroom player playing punk rock, hardcore, drone.

My DIY pedal board is finally complete.

I'm not sure it'll ever be complete in reality, but it's good enough for me for now.

Made from a bit of plywood stained in mahogany wood stain. Some 3D printed feet with rubber self adhesive tape for grip.

Harley Benton ISO-1 Power supply on the back and some cable management to keep it all in place.

After lots of shopping around I managed to get all the pedals (and power supply) on either vinted or FB marketplace for a total of about £215.

Also got a Zoom G3XN for some modulation effects for versatility.

Hopefully I can now stop spending all of my money on pedals 🙃

Any double tracking pedals that aren’t the Strymon Deco

I don’t know if this is a dumb question but are there any other guitar pedals that can do a convincing ADT sounds like those of later Beatles songs.

i know the Deco is sort of the industry standard for that sort of thing but are there any others that can do the same thing?

Cheers for any input.

SOTB Current Board Layout

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’ve done a lot of switching around. This is supposed to be an all around use board. It covers alt rock, punk, country, blues, ska, emo, funk, shoegaze, death metal, sludge metal, black metal, metalcore, and jazz.

Signal chain:
- TCE Polytune 3

- Vaderin HP-X (percolator clone)

- EQD Plumes

- Oneder Effects Oneder Drive

- HM-2 Cult Chainsaw

- Boss Metal Zone

- EQD Acapulco Gold (Sunn Model Pedal)

- Walrus Julia Chorus

- MXR Phase 90

- EQD Dispatch Master (Reverb/Delay)

- Walrus Fable (Granular Soundscapes)

- Digitech Polara Reverb

- MXR Clone Looper

Thinking of adding an octave up pedal for use in doom and sludge playing. Any recommendations?
